Surface Aeration 101—Oxygenation via 'Ripple Effect' and Surface Agitation
G'day. In this video I run through surface aeration 101 which involves using an aerator (or aerators) on the water surface to agitate the surface causing gas exchange, i.e., entry of good gases like oxygen and removal of bad gases like hydrogen sulphides. I run through how a surface aerator works to improve your water (reduce weeds, algae, odour, sludge etc) by adding oxygen, what the benefits of are in comparison to sub-surface aerators, and also the drawbacks of surface aerators. I have a question regarding the heavy metal accumulation in Azolla and the neurotoxin production of Azolla's symbiotic phosphate-fixing cyanobacteria. If it is being used as a fertiliser and for life-stock, how are these very harmful substances being removed or controlled?

Hello! I'm in the Arizona mountains, and live on a beautiful creek. We were overrun by reeds during our last flood, and was wondering about what you meant by biologically degrading.

Has anyone used these to add dissaolved oxygen to wastewater effluent? This would final wfflunet,.ao very clean, but would have sodium hypochlorite (bleach) dosed in as well.

Does this help with Duckweed too?
With ongoing use it can help eradicate all pests including Duckweed, but also other aquatic weeds and algae. Just to be clear, it's not a herbicide though. I want to figure out how to do the opposite with bacteria (or other natural method) for agriculture. You are taking ammonia and using bacteria to convert that back into nitrogen gas. I want to take nitrogen gas (air) and utilize the bacteria most efficient at converting nitrogen to ammonia. For agriculture.
You may try setting up a hydrophonics system. In this, u may use water containing optimum level of ammonia distributed to your crops

Is this stuff safe for fish and yabbies?
Yes, as long as it's not grossly overdosed. It's an alum-based product which means there's a risk of sudden pH drop if severely overdosed. It's got a much higher safety margin than standard alum but there's still a risk. If you do some bucket testing before treating to give you a better idea of how much you'll need, then you'll know the ballpark range you should operate in. A bit more than this will be fine but a big overdose should be avoided. We haven't had anyone do any damage to fish or yabbies and we've been using if for over a decade.

Building my pond last couple weeks and my most stressful time was choosing the liner! BIG DECISION! Because I Have dogs that could possibly enter my pond, i went with 45-mil EPDM and though damn heavy at 210lbs for 25X25 liner I am very happy with my choice and could have spent 1/2 as much on a different material which would be lighter but not as strong...900.00usd later I am very happy with my decision. Liner is very important!
Where did you purchase this liner from? Is it still holding up?
@@SpaceAce1316 Dang it, i can't remember BUT as long as its 45 MIL EPDM it dont really matter. its only 5-months old but having large dogs in the yard and walking around on the liner through construction phase and throughout the winter I am more than happy! can't beat 20-year warranty

Yes, solar is possible. Take a look at p.12 from this brochure (waterqualitysolutions.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Matala-Brochure_.pdf). If you have power within 200m of your dam, a remote setup can also be used. See p. 11 from the same brochure.

I cant believe that these pads wont block with leaves etc. You mentioned keeping the pads clear of the outlet, is there space for the extra fine grey pad you spoke of?
This is one of the best features of Matala media; they won't clog like foam does because the way the mats are designed means the water slows and splits. So materials like leaves drop off, rather than getting sucked against the surface. Unfortunately there isn't enough room to fit in any extra sheets.

You'd be surprised how easy it is to clean the sheets. Because they are bio-filters; full of live bacteria, you actually don't want to over zealous in the cleaning process. It's just a matter of rinsing and shaking debris free, then draining the water. Nothing excessive. You can find instructions on the easiest methods to clean them here: bit.ly/3QJ4h8R

is 3/8'' hose enough for for the farthest diffuser or one have to use 1/2'' or 5/8'' hoses in that case? Does it make any difference whatsoever, upon condition we use a diaphragm pump of Hakko type?
For a Hakko aerator, for hose runs less than 30m, you could use 3/8’’, 1/2’’ or 5/8’’. For runs 30m to 60m we suggest 1/2’’ or 5/8’’. And for runs over 60m, use 5/8’’ only. The wider the hose, the less resistance is applied to the air coming through, so wider hose can increase aeration (slightly). If in doubt, we tend to go for the larger size hose.
