The storyline and narration in this video truly gave me chills, fantastic work
I loved this video! I laughed! I cried! I lost ten pounds! Bravo!
Stop with the Latinx bullshit
Gabriel Garcia Marquez wasn't Latinix. Latinix is a literary distortion
In the context of the episode, Angela is referring to “Latinx” to be inclusive to all genders in the collective group in lieu of “Latinos and Latinas”. We do not discuss gender identities in this episode.
I’m almost 38 and I’ve never been into spicy books. Or straight up romance novels for that matter. But I’m fine with a little spice, even if somehow I’ve become more of a prude as I’ve gotten older. But if a book has a trigger warning for most things, I’m not going to read it. This is a good discussion though. To each their own. I read primarily nonfiction for fun. I have a hard time getting into most modern fiction. So I’ve been working on writing the fiction that I’d like to read. And since I’m writing with a young adult direction, the spice has to be pretty minimal, even if spicier things are certainly hinted at.
@@ameliadesertsong thanks for the feedback! It’s great that you’re writing the fiction that you’d like to read.
This is a great interview about a lot of important societal issues. The thing that really stands out to me, though, is the part about heart and head authority. These aren’t just important to keep in mind for crafting protagonists; it’s how we look at people in real life. If someone is very proficient, we let a lot of other things slide. Or if someone is clearly not proficient, but they’re likable, we let things slide. But while this is basically something you have to do in creating great fiction, it also makes me think about how a lot of what we tell ourselves about lots of high profile people is just as much fiction as the novels we enjoy. I also like how Rob talks about how our society is becoming more mindful. I think this mindfulness is often not visible in our everyday lives, but he is right. I do take a bit of issue with blaming a lot of ills in our society on ineffective or corrupt law enforcement , though. Yes there is ineffectiveness and corruption, as Rob gave perfect examples. But it’s because politics and law enforcement should have nothing to do with each other, especially not directly. The American system has broken down a lot, and our public institutions need major reworking. But all people have to do is either vote for the right people, or go out and find better people to vote for. There are some major flaws in the system that weren’t considered in the 1780s, but I think are still fixable. Also, I love the idea of an “anti-villain” protagonist. That’s an underexplored trope! Overall great interview and these books sound great, too!
Thanks so much for the feedback and the awesome insight!
22:16 I've discovered evidence that Edgar Allan Poe was not the author of either "The Raven" or "Annabel Lee." He actually had nothing whatsoever to do with the writing or first publication of "The Raven," and as for "Annabel Lee," this he renamed it and re-wrote the last four lines to make it macabre. Both poems, according to my research results, were written from real life by Mathew Franklin Whittier, the younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Neither of these poems were originally Gothic horror poems written in imagination, by anybody. They were grief poems, written in tribute and based on real experience.
I'm thrilled to see the episode where I was a guest featured here on TH-cam! If you ever want to have me on again, I would love to participate! 🚒

That was a fun breakdown of some well known tricksters and their archetypes! Enjoyed listening to this volunteer podcast for the first time. Keep up the good work pleeeeaaaase

I like this a lot. The thought of a potato striving for sun even in a dark cellar. They may never bloom, but they strive to regardless. Good episode.
Thank you! Lucy did a fantastic job.
Been a good year! Here’s to many more!
Complete equality isn't portrayed in sci-fi as utopian , but rather dystopian . I don't think it's possible to conceptualize complete human equality without quickly running into dystopia . Thankfully , this is an arena where the journey matters , and we've still far to go .
Check out our episode on Utopian societies! We discover how quickly they break down.
I love the idea of Karen as a Godess, its like when witches channel the goddess Hecate. Also, the idea of the Algorithm being a temperamental God is so spot on.
Great episode, Jason Pargin is one of my favorite authors
So glad you liked it!
This was so fascinating. And for someone who is not strong in the sciences I could definitely follow the topics! Thanks for a very enlightening discussion.

Great episode and I like Danielle's approach to dragons, it is not too dissimilar from my own Drogkine.

I agree about Harry Potter, it would have fit his narrative arc better if he had died. But, let's face it, the series is named Harry Potter, and if he dies, no more series. Even though the latest books and movies are just set in that same universe. The thing is, and I'm surprised it didn't come up in the Chosen One episode, is that Harry was not the only one to meet the requirements of the prophecy; so was Neville Longbottom. In fact, he met all the same requirements and ended up being the one to kill the final Horcrux, the snake. It would have been such a mind flip to have Harry die only for Neville to step up and defeat Voldemort, maybe not directly, but his leading of the charge to stop Voldemort allowing everyone to finally come together to stop him. And yes, the Star Wars sequels, the ending of Rise of Skywalker felt way too forced with far too much studio interference and never addressed the whole balance of the force issue, of which I have a fun theory about.
It would be very George RR Martin of Rowling to have Harry die at the end just so Neville could rise from the ashes and save the world 🙃
Great Episode, and like many I am not a huge fan of the "Chosen One" trope. But I think my biggest issue is that too many of them "fail upwards." They are so prophesized that no one allows them to fail, or that they have to overly rely on those around them, Harry Potter is a prime example of this, especially early on. Me personally, I loved how Anakin turned the trope on its head. While he did eventually bring balance to the force, and boy do I have theories on that, he did it "the wrong way." My personal favorite "Chosen One" is Ender Wiggen from Ender's Game. In part because he never knew that he was the Chosen One. While he was hand selected to be the great general to lead humanities war, he had no idea why, nor that his father was originally chosen, but the timing didn't work and he didn't have the right instincts but was close. Even his siblings were tested and considered but they had their own reasons for being disqualified. Ender never failed up, but snatched victory from even certain defeat by using brains, wits, and tactics no one else would consider, and in the end, when on the verge of burnout his final act of defiance, well... If you haven't read it.
Interesting episode. TO my mind a shared universe is one where multiple creators work together, but I can see how a prolific writer, who uses different voices, like King would still qualify. I think what makes a good Shared Universe is a good universe building, people like or love the universe and want to see or read more of/about it. When it comes to who did it first, I would have to say the Cthulhu Mythos. Created by Lovecraft, he wrote most of the stories, but Delreth and Robert E Howard also contributed, in fact, Conan takes place in the Cthulhu Mythos Universe. And other authors continue to add to it even today. I think when it comes to what killed some of the SUs, is that they tried too hard to make it one from the beginning, especially Dark Universe. What made Iron Man and the MCU so good was the Iron Man was a standalone story with just easter eggs and one final stinger at the end to show that an SU was being built. The Godzilla movies are another SU that just sort of failed to launch. They worked and were good, eventually giving us Godzilla vs King Kong, but it never quite landed and ran with its concept to the degree it needed to. The old Star Wars Legends were also a great SU, with numerous storylines that didn't directly involve the main characters because the universe was such a big playground. And that is what it is, a Shared Universe is a big playground, one with rules for sure, but a writer entering into the playground has to be comfortable playing by the rules of the owner. Of course the owner of the playground also has to set realistic rules and not take complete control over the game.
Another great episode. ANd yes, so many of the technologies and techniques used to adapt other worlds to become habitable could (and should) be used to help repair the damage done to the Earth. When talking about colonizing Venus my mind always goes to the old Venus Wars Anime where a comet crashed into the planet blowing out most of the atmosphere and depositing a massive amount of water on the surface to make it barely habitable. Another good series when talking about nearish future solar system colonization is Ben Bova's Grand Tour series. He has been working on it for decades and there is a fair amount of retconning that takes place as a result as he didn't write it all in order either. As was stated the Expanse is also another good example especially when it comes to how corporations will have a large stake in establishing colonies and how some may not want to relinquish control easily.
Thanks for the recs! Can’t wait to check them out. Yeah, Gareth was a great guest and I hope he comes back in the future.
It's funny that a lot of the new heroes you two described and how the media works with and around them is pretty much spot on with how Vought industries handles their manufacturered heros on The Boys.
You know what you’re so right. I recorded this before I watched The Boys, and then when I did watch it I was like shoot, I wish I had seen this earlier! So many good things to pull from
@@speculativesandbox I kind of figured that, but still found it funny. I have imagined a few supers over the years, but my idea of a fun hero team would be more of a spin off of GI Joe. Like A GI Joe suicide squad, commanded by a veteran member, they take on the missions that the regular joes won't and have a high death rate, like they lose members every mission. So, while everyone knows about the Joes and other Special Forces units, this team is unsung heros who quite often don't make it home.
I think a big thing you see in several of the modern dystopias, especially YA, is the notion of categorization of people. This is quite relevant in YA fiction given the cliques that form in Middle and High School, where the audience is entering or a part of. So the heroes tend to be the "outcasts" who don't fit into one particular group, or who defy what their group is meant to represent. Given that, I consider Harry Potter to be a bit of a "present day" dystopia for that very reason, with the kids being separated out based simply on characteristics determined by a single test. Hot take I know, but there it is.
Great point! You can also see this in the Divergent series and the Uglies series.
Great intro to the series, just a quick suggestion to put the book list in the description with affiliate links.
That’s a great idea, thank you!
Yo bro - keep making these. Very interesting and quite happy I found your youtube. I am listening while I am working
Thank you so much! Glad you’re enjoying them. We have a whole new season coming out starting today with “Corporatocracy”. The season will go until the end of November, and then I plan to do a summer 2023 batch as well.
@@speculativesandbox, yo man, that sounds exciting. I am looking forward to it :D. Very interesting and keeps the brain active!
Equilibrium is a great Utopian action movie. Rides the logistics only approach like the Vulkans. Also a Netflix show “3 Percent”. People compete to join a utopian society by going through a variety of survival tests. Most being mental tests. And upon acceptance they are made sterile to prevent inadequate children (technically all children), and live the rest of their lives amongst deserving peers. I haven’t finished the show yet, but it seems like a side civilization that excludes itself from the rest. In doing so they built a stronger more technological country they are willing to share with deserving individuals. I like it’s idea, minus it’s biggest fault being the lack of humanity in the form of helping others where they could, yet relying heavily on the excluded to help keep their civilization in existence (if people past their immigration tests haha). It’s weird, but interesting. Like if Wakanda gave an entrance exam and vasectomies lol. Side note : The way you said “Aang” makes me feel you watched the live action movie and ONLY the live action movie…and that worries me. Cause that movie is NOT Avatar:TLAB haha
thanks for the recs! That's an interesting idea, that their way of keeping the civilization going is by having people test in rather than giving birth to future generations. And lol I did watch Avatar the show years ago when it first came out but haven't had a chance to revisit it recently. And then I watched the movie once too. My memory also sucks haha. Do you have high hopes for the upcoming adaptation?
@@speculativesandbox I didn’t know they were going to do more after Korra. I’ll keep an open mind for it until it’s here I guess haha. I like the world they built, so it deserves a chance imo.
All of these sound amazing, but particularly that November 8th one. I dunno, I just like that guy's voice. (Hint: it's me.)
