how to achieve the “Meg Ryan Fall” look | shop your closet tips & easy DIYs from a former stylist
As a rom-com enthusiast, I was SO excited when I started seeing the “Meg Ryan Fall” aesthetic going around the internet. So I thought I would do a deep dive into the look, with outfits & breakdowns piece by piece, inspired by my 2 favorite Meg Ryan movies, “When Harry Met Sally,” & “You’ve Got Mail” (+ a bit of “Sleepless in Seattle.) Sleepless in Seattle is what got me as a young adult.
I love Kathleen Kelly's style:-) Although I'm too much into colors to ever come close. Your making this style so achievable for us is amazing. Thank you! And you look mesmerizing in all outfits!
YES, I was struggling a bit with having very few neutrals in my closet too! & thank you!
Great video! Love the style, you wear it well. I really enjoy the hand embroidered touch on your grey sweater.
I loved this video. I think that my favorite rom comes from that era are While You Were Sleeping, You’ve Got Mail, and Serendipity.
omg I haven't watched Serendipity in FOREVER I'll have to try it again!
I love your necklace, where is it from? Have been hunting for a similar one high and low!
The necklace is actually my mom's design from her Etsy store, Tda Jewelry! I went ahead & put the link in the description if you want to check it out!
I love these videos but this has to be my favorite. Meg Ryan fall forever. 🤍 I’ve been looking for a cute knit waist coat, where is yours from? Trying to narrow down the search a bit. 😅
omg that is so kind, thank you!!!! The knit vest is from target!
They suit you well but if you tighten it up too much it can push your organs around I can call you terminal illness and can even be very deadly.
Great video! So much useful information. I especially liked how many options you gave.I immediately wanted to try something myself and, thanks to your advice, I know that I already have all the clothes in my wardrobe. 🥰
omg thank you! I'm glad the video could help!!!
So cute!
This was so fun! Now I want to try making some outfits like this. I have always loved the look of fitted shirts under tailored dresses in You’ve Got Mail. It also reminds me of one scene in Sound of Music in which Maria has a similar layered look, but with a different skirt silhouette.
Meg Ryan is the GOAT when it comes to classy effortless style. Have you ever seen the movie “me before you” I love emilia clarke’s charters aesthetic. Would you ever consider doing a character breakdown?
I haven't seen it yet, but it's been recommended to me before, so i will definitely check it out!
Loved this theme and loved your takes! Thanks 🍁🍂
loved the embroidery you did!!! turned out so cute
I love these! I do find it funny that I spent most of my late teens and early twenties dressing like this as Meg Ryan was my style icon and I went to see each of these films as they came out in the cinema 😂😂 I’m giving my age away there 😖. I also agree When Harry met Sally is my all time favourite!
lol I would have loved to see some of these in theatres, I'm jealous!
yes love all the meg ryan fall movies!! You've Got Mail is my favorite
YES You've Got Mail is an absolute classic (at least in my family lol)
Oh these are cute! I don’t really watch rom coms, so it’s interesting to see what kinda styles I’ve seen and where they are from!
Ooo Bre you are very clever I love watching you x
All of Dolly's looks are iconic. I like your take on this one. My mom really likes onions; I'll have to forward her that recipe.
I've never seen a slip dress identified by name, but now that I have, I need to say: it's rather like an Edwardian dress, in that it looks rather like a nightgown. I like this breakdown of how to unpick characters' costumes to find clothing elements (texture, fabric weight, shape, palette) that fit the character or setting and might appear in the wardrobe one already has. Man, I remember when T'Witches came out ... I chose not to watch it, because I was already a fan of the book series and didn't trust film adaptations of books to not change or get rid of my favourite parts. They wouldn't have the *time* to address *half* of my favourite story arcs. Somewhere I read that you can grind up roasted pumpkin seeds and use them as a flour substitute; though it included a disclaimer that you can't replace *all* the flour with it. I use the same trick you do with hot chocolate, pouring some hot water in and stirring it to dissolve the powder before filling the mug the rest of the way.
Very nice work! Pants cloning is one of the best ways to acquire new pants. Especially if you like coloured or printed pants - whenever I go pants shopping, everything in my size is black, dark blue, or sometimes dark brown, and the only prints are on pajama pants.
Those gory gingerbread cookies get more and more seasonal as you take bites out of them! Skull jam thumbprints are a fun idea, too. I bet they could also make good jack-o-lantern cookies, maybe with apricot jam filling so they're orange. I think at least some Christmas cookies, like gingerbread (which can get pretty elaborately decorated), became Christmas cookies because people baking them were only willing to put in the effort once a year. My mom and I both enjoy baking, but by the time we're cutting out the last dozen gingerbreads, we are *done* with them.
Handkerchief hems are so perfect for leafy or petal hems! I like how shiny it is. The 'undershirt' looks like a design choice rather than a precaution. The sleeves are a fun fantasy element but there is definitely a lot going on even without them. I don't know if you've seen 'Strange Magic' but the pink and green layering of the skirt in the concept sketch reminds me of Marianne (the protagonist)'s green and dark pink tunic. You might have fun with the fairy costumes from that movie too! (It's Disney, 2015, from when they acquired Lucasfilm, but they did like *no* advertising or merchandising for it so it's relatively obscure. CGI jukebox musical loosely inspired by 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Not for everybody, but the people who like it *really* like it.)
Big fan of watching you talk about fabrics and their composition and how they’re made. Would absolutely eat up a video all about this. ❤️❤️
New here! I really enjoy your nature scenes!😊 Your pants turned out so cute! I am still building the nerve to work with plaids.
I love this vieo idea! The best part was when you showed different fabrics along with colors. For my analytic brain it was amaxing to see bigger ideas divided into small parts easy ti digest ❤ also great outfits!
LOVE this!!!!!! I’m a midsize girly with chronic pain and other medical issues. Always dressed to hide or wore whatever was “good enough” to get by. However I’m a huge nerd and love the Hobbitcore (and some elements of cottagecore) styles. Hoping to one day be able to assemble a wardrobe that reflects how I want to look. When it comes to putting together outfits my brain literally cannot compute 😅 and I. Get frustrated when things I find or order do not fit or turn out how I want to. I’d love to learn to sew some day (when my finances and body allows) to be able to create the pieces I love and are just right. Now that I found this video I will be obsessing over your channel 🙌 are you on IG as well?!
love all your projects but the corset top has to be my favorite. The fabric is so cute!! 😍
I’ve never had a pumpkin pie. It’s not really a thing in my country. I might try make it.
Love the pants and now I want to go find plaid to make myself a pair 😂 thanks for the awesome videos, enjoy your well deserved break!!!
Loved the video and the acknowledgement at the end. Definitely brought comfort to us, and I hope you are able to fill your cup too <3
Lovely video, lovely baking, lovely fabric choice and the trousers were totally worth the effort! Those trousers look amazing on you!
for the celophane paper if you want o correct something you can use rubbing alcohol to erase and marking
They’re really cute. You did an excellent job.
stares at the pile of clothes I've been meaning to copy: hmmm maybe today is the day!
The trousers are so cute, love the pattern and the fabric. ❤
Excellent! I have a pair of pants that fit me SO well (and are very similar to these, so that's even better for me). But the brand that did the m closed before I could buy more of it. And I wore them so many times that they are now used in the "chub rub" area. So I want to copy them so I can duplicate them in different colors and textures. I might also try to repair the used pair to see if it can be done but I doubt it would work and don't know how to do it. For some reasons pants feel very intimidating to make. 😅 Thank you for making me discover a beautiful feel good song. Your pumpkin tart looked lovely and delicious.
Women's pants never seem to have enough belt loops. It's so annoying. Good for you adding more.
The pants are very cute🥰.
Heh someone needs to get you a tea pot and a tea cozy lady. 🙂 It keeps your tea nicely warm for longer, without the whole need for a ladle and jug. Loved the sewing
Newbie apparel sewist question: why would you attach the pockets before the waistband and/or before attaching the pants panels together? Wouldn't it be easier to see it on before all the extra fabric gets in the way?
yes definitely, if you know exactly where you want your pockets to go, that is best practice. But i wasn't sure if i wanted to place mine exactly where the original pair had them. So i got to where i could try them on and then tried out a couple of options (i still went with the original placement anyway lol)
Love these pants! Girl, I’m going to try and steal your style lol. ❤ I just love all the things you wear. Do you have any tips for short girl length proportion’s? I’m 5’2 and curvy and lately I’ve been feeling like my clothes are frumpy.
omg yes steal it! & as far as shorter proportion style tips, I would try silhouettes with a defined waist, with more fitted tops and slightly looser bottoms. Also, I would try to keep your trousers, jeans, or pants longer (below the ankle to almost scraping the floor), and for fit I would try a straight leg or with a slight flare. For skirts, I would keep to mini to midi length, & try for something with a bit of flow, but not a full skirt (not always, but just generally). Now i think anyone can pull anything off, but those are some tips I hope help!
Thank you!!! That helps so much! I’m excited to try your tips out ❤
This definitely helped me feel a little better today, and helped calm my anxiety. I only recently followed but love all your content and how genuine you are.
omg thank you so much for your lovely comment, I'm glad the video could at least help a bit
You have once again 🤌🏻🤌🏻 nailed it. Magician! Adorable! 💛💛💛💛
awww thank you!!!
Completely agree with you about Violet and Kate's dresses! So many gorgeous details and flattering colors and cuts on them. Love the tulip sleeve, love the richness of the fabrics and the velvets. They definitely had their color theory down with these two. That dress that Violet wears with the birds on it is outstanding. Something about it is so delightful. I think the whimsy of it is what really caught my attention. Love little nature details in apparel.
these turned out so cute!
You are so relaxed in the kitchen or it seems so. I enjoy watching the process. What a lovely pie too. The leaves may have sunk on their own without your Dad's assistance. And thank you for teaching me to stay patient with sewing projects that go sideways. Your pants are very attractive. Hopefully when you make more you will share those too.
yes, my love for cooking has really grown over the last few years, so the kitchen is one of my happy places now. & i think I'm making my mom a pair for Christmas so if I do I'll bring you guys along for that!
These are such nice pants! They look amazing on you 😊
AH! I have those pants in black! Yeah, I absolutely love them, I had to mend the crotch a few times because I wore them too much and they rubbed, lol, my sewing skills are crap though, lol, even though my mom is a costumer, and I don't own a sewing machine
YES mine are looking "well-loved" too, & i might cry when they start falling apart, so I'm glad i made a pattern at least lol
I discovered your channel today and I'm in love! I love sewing content + baking/cooking videos so your videos just combine my 2 loves. You just gained yourself a new subscriber. Can't wait to watch more of your stuff! 🥰
thank you so much! It's always so nice to read that other people have the same combo of interests as me!
