Barry Luke Builds
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 18 มี.ค. 2012
Barry likes to make things. He has a small foundry where non Ferris metals are cast and all sorts of items are welded. There is a wood working shop where his wooden projects are created. Home projects are ongoing like building custom steel gates and placing concrete walks. A houseboat floating on the Blood River has been the birth of many marine renovation projects and upgrades. His bride is quite the sculptor so there are lots of molds and art casts going on. And Barry was re purposing objects long before it was the cool thing to do.
Using Raptor urethane on the mini hoe sheet metal straightening project.
Building trails through the woods was kind of hard on the mini hoe sheet metal. Lots of tight squeezes, uprooted trees, and slippery footings was cause for a lot of sheet metal damage where there was none before, and I did them all. In this video I made a valiant attempt to straighten out all of the bends and kinks but in the end, it was the Raptor that saved the day.

A tiny house camp camper cooktop improvement.
มุมมอง 34816 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
If you think your house doesn't have enough countertop, just try preparing food in a tiny house or camper. Never enough space. David came up with an idea that had merit, so I built it. He was right!

A basic, not too fancy, concrete driveway patch Job.
มุมมอง 34621 วันที่ผ่านมา
Our house is behind another house. We are lucky enough to own them both. We share the drive most of the way, but the back half is used mostly by us. Part of the back half had some serious issues. The quality of one particular section does not match the quality of the majority and that section was really falling apart. The track hoe was in town at my son's house, and it has been super dry, so I ...
We replaced our nonfunctioning gate operators with another brand. It was a little involved!
มุมมอง 285หลายเดือนก่อน
The new actuators have a shorter stroke than the existing ones. Compounding this problem was that the instructions were written for a different gate mount than our set up. Why I chose this project to even attempt to follow instructions I have no clue. The old man was frustrated. But I muddled through and once I discarded the instruction charts, we figured out a working setup. If you would like ...
DIY build of Roll Up Sunscreens to help keep the cabin screened porch a little cooler in the summer.
มุมมอง 249หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a video about how I assembled a version of roll up sunscreens for the cabin porch. The material I purchased for the screen turned out to be not the best, but we muddled through, and in the end we have a simple effective easy to use system. Enjoy and please hit the like button. Thanks Barry

Saving A Rotten Door.

Out outside "shower" door has come apart. It is an old door that has little value, but it is a door that I would have a hard time finding a replacement for. So, let's see if we can save it. And please give me a like, even if you didn't, just lie. Thanks
Off Grid Tiny Home Kitchen Cabinet Addition.
มุมมอง 2872 หลายเดือนก่อน
Building out an unfinished cabinet space in our tiny kitchen, mistakes and all. At one time in my life I was a pretty good woodworker. Failing eyesight, shaky hands, and a general case of impending antiquity has taken its toll. But I am not quite ready to hang up the tape measure yet. So here is my latest woodworking project, closing in a space left for an under-cabinet fridge that was not to b...
Can a $45 Chinese Chain Saw Even Work and will it kill Tallow trees? The Answer Might Surprise You!
มุมมอง 1832 หลายเดือนก่อน
I have been systematically ridding our property of Chinese tallow trees for 3 years now. I am making progress but have waffled between using a gas chain saw or a hand saw from day one. Both have their advantages, and both have their draw backs. A friend suggested I should give one of those little 6" chain saws a try. Being a curmudgeon, I resisted, until I realized how cheap they really are. So...
Turning a poorly made worn out wicker love seat into a swing for under the tree house.
มุมมอง 1742 หลายเดือนก่อน
I have been looking for some sort of outdoor furniture that I could modify into an exterior swing. Not having any luck until this wicker piece showed up. Hoping for something a little larger but after several months of looking this little seat started looking pretty good. It is now a swing and trust me this was no priceless antique I have bastardized. Just a cheap little Chinese POS that might ...

Happy thanksgiving Barry and many blessings to you and your family!
Learned something!TY! 37:51 37:51
So glad to hear, thanks for letting me know!
Looks good, on the tank end. The only improvement to consider, is maybe adding clean-out pipes on top of each 55-gallon tank. That awesome pump you have been using can send a garden hose down to clean out any built-up sediment yearly. This should extend the life of your system. And your compost pile will love it. Tank one yearly, tank two yearly, or every other and you will figure out tank 3. Looking forward to seeing your drain field. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Kimo! I thought long and hard about adding clean outs on the tanks. In the end the fact that the concrete pads are only about a shovel deep in the soil let me take a pass on those. I did add the observation port at the discharge end which I check monthly. At the first sign of any thing but liquids going by I will call for a pump truck! Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! Barry
"more better"?
At least! Maybe even much more better. Thanks for watching and always keep smiling!
You basically have the making of a methane digester
Douglas Agree, but I am treating liquids and solids.
How do they drain
Ray It is a gravity system from the cabin to the septic tanks to the leach field. The leach field is the next video in the series. Barry
@ ok thank you great video
Bravo, I already built tree house Ramona and i know how hard it is, with your age big rescpect.
Thanks, a little respect is always appreciated! Barry
Very nice!
Thanks Britt!
Looks good. I like your outdoor kitchen there. I have a question on your Coleman stove. I have one I use for camping, just took up tent camping with the wife and kids. It looks like you leave the bottle hooked up when not in use? It also looks like the bottle is hanging out in space? I have been hooking the bottle up when in use, and unhooking when not. I have also been resting the tank on the table, giving up ~1' of counter space. Have you ever had a bottle leak down because of a leak in the connections or the gas valves to the burners?
Thanks Benjamin! I questioned the joint between the tube that hooks to the propane bottle and the stove. It just seems so flimsy and loose. I used to have the bottle propped up on the counter like you but Dave slid it over and let it hang. The bottles last an amazingly long time, so I don't believe they leak in either position. But as you can see ours is outdoors so a small leak would just be an inconvenience not a safety issue.
Very nice, I don't know how much time and money you have invested into this but I can definitely tell you that a table like that (not from IKEA) will go for over $700. So another big score Captain. Have a great day !
The best projects are when everything comes from the shop, I didn't even have to buy the varnish! Sometimes it just works out that way. Thanks again!
How did you come to the calculation of 60' of leech pipe
Girth There are guidelines based on your soil type, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, etc. i just made mine as long as I could based on the piece of property I was working with 🤞
Your work looks clean and meticulous 🫡
Thank you for the kind words !!!
On my property I have a sewer lagoon that drains out into the woods. Forest is beautiful in the spring. Plus the berry bushes love it.
An excellent solution!
Great job Barry, did the center console ever sell.?
Thanks ! The boat is in boat purgatory, not sure if it is for sale or if my sone wants it. But it is still around.
Nice project-looks great!!
Thanks Brandy!
House is getting a lovely touch of love, exactly what turns it into a home. I liked that brick'ish color too. Regards Captain !
Thank you chugaaa! The needed some love!
Mr. Barry, great job! Wold like to know what epoxy and thickener did you use for the door? Brand, maybe link to big A page? Thanks.
Dude got saved by the chains 😮
Hey Barry, you lost me at the "right-angle jig"! You done well (as usual)! Thank you good sir. 🔨🪚💡
Bert, thank you for the kind words. The jig was just a helper to establish more accurate measurements that I didn’t need.😏
You nailed it when you mentioned concerns about the square water tote. I've seen a system using one collapse inward for the exact reasons you mentioned.
Thanks for sharing!
I have a different solution for black water waste management: Incinerator toilet utilizing either free solar energy or propane. A grey-sterile ash is the only clean up I will process. Any other alternative is usually too much work and expensive maintenance.
Mike Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment. Glad you have a system that works for you.
where is the 200 foot ten feet deep drain ditch ?where does it drain to ?
KK Not sure what you are asking.
You should have used a gravel base with sand on top sand on top of it and tamp it down. And there's really no need for those nails cuz it probably is not going to support it at all anyway. And I have never in my life seen anybody put a "vapor barrier" under concrete. If anything it traps water.
My most frustrating issue with You Tube is that I am not able to add photos to responses on comments . If I could do this I could show the haters that the walkway is crack and heave free after five plus years. So something must have been done correctly, yes? Anyway, even negative comments help my channel so bring them on!
“Concrete nerds” 🤣🤣
That’s us!
i love the diy way but how do you get it clear from county codes for the diy
Yes always beg for permission and pay $1000's of dollars to your masters in permits, licenses, and fees before doing anything on your own property, LOL!!!!
Justin Two thoughts One ; we are on our own 125 acres in a very rural corner of a very rural county in a very rural state. Things are just different here than in most parts of the country including Baton Rouge Louisiana where we live. Two ; I am not sure I have done anything that would not be up to code. To complicate the issue The codes refer to bedrooms and occupants, and we have neither. Location location location! Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment.
Hey Elmer: if your outlet on 3rd barrel gets clogged ( poop,dirt,wipes....etc) your system will not have an out flow and will be waterlogged. Youre going to be digging it all up in a year or two. ..
Frankly, if an any pipe in any treatment process gets clogged it is a problem. Not sure about your concern. If there were to be a clog wouldn’t you think it would be on the inlet of the first tank prior to any anaerobic digestion? There will be a year end review of the system in a video so that you haters can either say I told you so or more likely just be quiet. Thanks for commenting, as it helps my channel.
Great job Sir , unfortunately you find more truck drivers like that these days. And the concrete crew were on the ball, take care Cheers
Thanks Buck! I guess I just don’t have much tolerance for folks that don’t do their job as best as they are able. In the other hand, Steve’s crew, too notch. Once the concrete hit the ground there was no more talking. They just made it happen. Barry
Critics are everywhere hard workers not so much, you never stop Captain good for you showing everyone how it's done! Btw any updates on the boat? Regards
Thanks Chug! They don’t bother me it just seemed like they really came out of the woodwork the last time I did a concrete video. The boat is fine but I never use it. It needs to find a new home.
@ so sad to hear specially after all the hard work and dedication you put into it, well as any other cycle in life it is time for someone else to appreciate that jewel 🛥️ . Best wishes Captain!
Not criticism At All! But a question, especially on friend like dirt we used plastic and hosed the concrete wet for a couple of days, guess your ground is so hard it doesn’t suck out water to soon?
Albert You are 100% correct. We are at the end of a long drought and all of the soil was dust. A ran the sprinkler for a half a day until the area was soaked and then no more the day before concrete day. I didn’t want it to be muddy. Technically visqueen would have been the best to separate the wet concrete from the substrate. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! Barry
But why would you decide to push the implinent. Plowing and leveling tools should be pulled and the with of the wheeles so yuo keave no tracks. Duh I'm
Who’s pushing?
Just about anything will work if you don’t load it. If you want to do laundry and have 6 people living in the house your barrel system will fail quickly.
Thank you Ken for stating what a lot of folks have trouble grasping. Our loading will be minimal and fingers crossed, it will work for a long long time. Barry
Looking at the video october 30, 2024. Great job i lerned something here
New Kid, happy you were able to get something for the video and thanks for letting me know! Barry
one more time, I can't stand when people say this is for an off grid. what does off grid mean? to film it and put it out for the world to see?
Marion I think you have asked a pretty good question but one that has no good answer. I am sure "off grid" means different things to different folks. But to dwell on that part of the title seems to be missing the big picture. "Off grid" to me does not equate to illegal, at least to me and the other 290 thousand viewers that watched this video, as no one else has asked this question. Maybe a reasonable answer would be a location where no municipality has jurisdiction, as in my case. Thanks for watchin and thanks for taking the time to comment. Barry
What a perfect video it shows how perseverance get you far...love the project although I think you forgot to include in your $ 1,500 saving the installation cost that easy would of been another $1,000 so big big savings on two days of hard work, physically and mentally. Kudos Captain.
Thank you chugaaa! You are a kind soul. Barry
Glad you hung in there and figured it out, had my head spinning.
On a normal day my head spins. Reading the Chinese/ American translated instructions that didn’t even pertain to my situation really had my head spinning. Just goes to show, instructions are overrated.
Wow! I installed security, fire alarms and magnetic locks for over 30 years. I kinda pride myself in being a low voltage guru of sorts. But dad gummit I was confused looking at those spec sheets. Great job on figuring it out Barry
Thanks Paul I should have never tried to read the instructions! Especially Chinese instructions. It can become a bad habit . Barry
Open sesame or what’s it called and a good thing you blurred the entry code Mr Luke, was going to travel thousands of miles just to open your door 😂. Seriously really like you iron with casted? Turtles. Best rgds Albert
Not much of a blur job, was it? But since we have only had a working gate for about two of the 22 years we have lived here it is not a big problem. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! Barry
flexible joint are not necessary because in case o a problem, just cut and then you use a flexible joint.
Alex Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment. And you are probably 100% correct. Barry

Hem the bottom and slide a sail batten into the hem. They are available at Sailrite as well as many other places. Slit the pipe and slide the batten and hem into the pipe. Hem the top and bottom for the sail battens. Sticky tape or seam tape works well and you will notice very little residue when using it. Has the advantage of helping to waterproof seams where needed.
The unfortunate reality of TH-cam is all of the tips and suggestions, some good, some bad, come after the projects are completed. Sometimes years after! Were it not for the choice of fabric I made, the method I used to construct these shades would require no sewing machine and no special tools. I think for a lot of people that is a plus. Your method would probably look more professional though. As always, thank you for the feedback. Barry
My dad made the similar system plus he used a pack of yeast every month . Cheap grocery kind of yeast . Worked well breaking down all the shight.
Thanks Jim! Several folks have suggested using yeast, I will look into that. Barry

Thank you, if you make your own I hope the video helps!
Cheers from France, "Beau Travail" as written on your wall ! Always having a good time watching your videos. Thanks.
Thank you Philippe! You are probably aware we have a bit of French heritage here in Louisiana. My dad grew up in a French speaking household. But unfortunately as the decades roll on the French speakers a becoming fewer and fewer. Thanks again Barry
It is very apparent that you have very little experience with plumbing. Cell core pipe came out in 1982. There were several other signs of you lack of knowledge with the task you were taking on. You need to seek professional advice because your s traps will syphon dry, and allow sewer gasses into the house that can be deadly. I enjoyed your septic system. Also you need to use primer or your glue joints won't last. I am a retired master plumber with over 50yrs in the field. Trust me, I'm telling you the truth, and expect nothing. Just concered about your safety.
Mr Mark I am appreciative that you have watched my video and taken the time to comment. I also appreciate your safety concerns but I think (at least in my particular situation) maybe those concerns are unfounded. A while back when we switched from the camper holding tank to the holding tank I fabricated all of the drains underneath the bathroom were rerouted. We failed to test the tub drain for leaks therefore we had a dry p trap. Yes gases came in and it took just a minute for us to realize that there was a problem. Running bath water solved the issue immediately, I can’t imagine dealing with stanky air long enough to cause harm in what is basically a one room cabin. Shame on me for not knowing about cell core pipe. Now I know. The cabin is close to three years one now and everything has been copasetic. Thanks again. Barry
