How To Read History
I started reading history a couple years ago, and have found some awesome books in the process! While there's no "one and only" way to read anything, here are a couple things i've found in my history reading journey.

"Harald Hardrada was a real life fantasy hero!" - Don Hollway
มุมมอง 343หลายเดือนก่อน
Today, I have the honor of interviewing author and historian Don Hollway. His books include Battle for the Island Kingdom, At the Gates of Rome, and The Last Viking. It was the Last Viking that was my introduction to Hollway's work, and I was enthralled by the story of Harald Hardada, his larger than life persona and various outsized adventures. We talk about Hardrada's legacy, dive into anglo-...

It's hard to separate out what makes a series better than any other when you're talking about a top 10, and this could change wildly if I were to revisit in a year, but here we are: the 2024 edition of the best fantasy series (according to me) 0:00 - Intro and Criteria 1:04 - Bloodsworn 2:41 - Five Warrior Angels 4:48 - Kingkiller 6:30 - St...

Dude so true. I'm sick of all these people crying about ADD and they don't read. But will game 10 hours straight. Definitely gonna check out Gardens of the moon
Great overview on this topic!
Thank you!
Didnt like dresden or malazan. Malazan u can argue i didnt give it a fair shake. I got to the start of the 2nd book and couldnt get thru it
Not much worth reading on the shelves these days. I look at the 'science fiction' well it's all Sci-Fi and no real science in it at all. I look at the historical fiction on the shelf and am appalled at the level of historical ignorance in it. Basically the same crowd that has ruined hollywood has taken over publishing and all they produce is woke crap.
Hey bro, I'm new to the channel. I don't know how I got on this topic. Perhaps it's for men who are not reading anymore. I used to read a lot. I'm 45 years old now. It's difficult. I started reading a book last days by Adam Nevill, I'm about 60 pages into a almost 600 page book. Thank you for helping remind me that it's not about how quickly I finish the book or if I finish the book at a certain point, you're going on the journey and you have no particular destination in mind. With that said, I'm also glad that you recommended dark matter. I've heard good things. I'm definitely going to read that next and the blade itself is well. Thank you for helping men continue to read. I'm looking forward to digging back in. I think I can do a half an hour a day so new to the channel subscribed and really appreciate the effort and really enjoyed the video thank you 🙏 🔥 🫡
@@Satsui_No_Hado so glad you enjoyed it, thanks my man!
no wheel of time ???
Bro. Sun Eater too
This was awesome! Would you say most history text books in school are popular history? I don’t recall much of it, but I do remember the chapters being quick and simple while going over historic events. Curious what your opinion is of the accuracy of those are as someone that’s a little more passionate about history than the average person ?
@@FlyKodiak100 probably would need to go on a case-by-case basis-textbooks are interesting because depending where they are coming from they could skew the narrative to fit within a desired narrative. (I.e. subjects like slavery & the Vietnam war get short shrift in lots of textbooks) At the same time I feel they are usually “generally” right about the things they cover. I am drawn, though, to topics NOT covered by your run-of-the-mill US history textbook, because I think there’s so much that gets left out. Based on my definition in the video (which I’m still unsure is correct) yep! History textbooks would be popular history.
@@FlyKodiak100 and thanks for watching!
Looks at self-pub industry….plenty of male novelists
but where is HoC review or even more important... Midnight Tides!
Coming soon!
Speaking as an historian, I am rejoiced to hear this.
Thanks so much!
Great video! Is Tom holland considered pop or academic history? Would love to see a video of some of your recommendations for both
I’d be happy to cover that! Holland is a bit of both, that’s why it’s tough to separate the two. His work is incredibly scholarly, but probably for the most part is aimed at a wider audience
Let's gooo mallazannnn🎉

Thanks for the list. Not much of a reader(it's been ages since I've read something). Will start explore these fantasy series. Watched LOTR and GOT, so I hope I'll love these recommendations.
I've read at least one book of everything on your list. And 5 of them are in my own top 10. Here is my top 10: 1. Wheel of Time by Jordan/Sanderson (been my #1 since 1997) 2. First Law universe (I combine all 9 books; I just feel like there are enough overarching story lines that go through all of them that I can combine them) 3. Legends of the First Empire by Sullivan 4. Stormlight Archive 5. Drenai Saga by Gemmell 6. Malazan 7. Broken Empire/Red Queen's War by Lawrence 8. Mistborn Era 2 by Sanderson 9. Kingkiller Chronicles 10. Belgariad/Malloreon by Eddings I'm currently reading Bloodsworn so it might hit the top 10 by the end. Right now it would be top 15 and it is my favorite Gwynne series at the very least. I need to look and see if you go a vid about the ending of FWA since you said you were only halfway through. Because for me it was on it's way to top 10 status for the first two books; but I didn't much like the ending of book 3. LotR and ASOIAF are both classics and both have been in my top 10 before; but I've found stuff I like better; they both still top 25 though. Read Lies of Locke Lamora a couple years ago; didn't hate it but didn't love it either. I might finish the series at some point but not in any hurry on it.
❤ Dresden files! Like that cover of storm front. Used of see the guy with the hat lol
Looks like something I’d have to “rent” for a college class lmao
@@SandwichAran you’re not wrong 😂
if only the video was 10 seconds longer...
I didn’t watch the vid but just came to hear / see thoughts about the first law series. For me the first 2 books were amazing , really interesting and unique characterisation. However the last book I felt was just completely off - everybody just doing shit completely out of character just to end off on the “oh well people don’t change note “ . We spent 2 books getting to know Logan trying to step away from being the Bloody Nine and then in the last book he goes crazy and kills of one own and keeps silent about it. I may be crazy but I felt like that was just ridiculous and poorly written
What does shlock mean?
read the witcher series!
I hated reading as a kid. Mainly because I associated it with school and homework. But 2 years ago I moved to a different department at my job working overnights. Music got boring after a while, and I was scrolling through TH-cam and saw an audiobook of The Lord of The Rings. I was a massive fan of the movies, and so I listened to them. And since then, my free time has been spent reading.
That’s awesome!
I’m excited to read John Gwynn this year, thinking of starting with Malice
Great place to start!
Tried Malazan. Honestly it's just so dense and he doesn't try at all to even make the reader enjoy it. It feels like An author trying to torture you so they feel smart.
Honestly, best served cold was B/C tier for me, however agree with all the other picks
I plan on tackling Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn this year. Excited!
likewise!
I need this guy to read Second Apocalypse
Wow this is one of the closest list to mine (first law wise) if you switch trouble with peace and wisdom! Im surprised :)
Two appearances of Joe Abercrombie here are beyond deserved, some of the best character work I've read easily.
I agree!
Great list. Would love to see the Farseer trilogy in there haha
Oh boy. I wish I was on my first Malazan read again. But trust me that the re-read has been just as good and better in so many ways.
I think readers are more open-minded in ways. Being a realist probably doesn't help creativity and imagination, hence harder to read fantasy without disgust. The reader seems to not care about that and just enjoys it. That's my take.
Redwall was my jam too
I got back into reading for fun this past year after graduating from csuf. I like to read both fiction and non fiction. I want to start my own side business so I have been focusing on non fiction at the moment.
I had the same reaction for the first 2 books of stormlight and a few years later I reread them it was the best reading experience of my life.
Stormlight sucks and it’s overrated
Eh...men have never really been into fiction, and that's ok. And its also why we like the screens with the talking heads. Try recommending some history or simple poly-sci stuff.
uh...its cuz they are too busy playing video games. Where ya been?
I think books 1. Are not very popular in Pop-culture these days for anyone to feel FOMO 2. They are not friendly to beginners and men like more action and excitement in their fiction, women are patient 3. But men do read Manga if that counts
Fine, i will read Malazan 😀
I think that it has to do with the fact that there is SOOOOO much other things for men to do that competes with books. Video games, Movies, Comics. Videos on the internet. It takes a lot of effort to read books. I read my first long book ever not more than a year ago. Mistborn the final empire. Now that took me a long time to get in the mood to read. I get the motivation to read by seeing what other people like and when i hear they have a great experience then i feel that i also want that experience. Thats how you sell reading to men.
You deserve more subscribers my man.
@@deelak2329 I appreciate you!
To me Trouble With Peace is better than Wisdom Of Crowds
Ego reading is a dagger of truth that I won't soon forget
I followed a similar path from many of the comments. It was only until the pandemic lock downs did I pick up avid reading once again. Two manly and enriching book recommendations I offer are: Musashi, by Eiji Yoshikawa - a fantantic redemption story of strength and humility. The second is Growth of the Soil, by Knut Hamsun - that book made me want to pick up an axe and cut down a tree and build my own home or grab a shovel and start digging just for the sake getting my hands dirty.
Man, I would love to put Kingkiller on my list, but the fae smut section ruined the second book for me so wholly I couldn't go back. Genuinely stopped reading at that point.
Cut hair now!
@@joeyq9953 my wife would fight you
It's actually very simple. Some people are stupid. Some people are not. Guess who the readers are! The proportion between the two groups doesn't vary that much really. It's just that there was a dramatic but brief peak in reading amongst the masses in the twentieth century, but this was an abberation, historically. We are just returning to the normal balance. The plebs only want bread and circuses.
Thanks Man❤
Whilst this statement is a gross generalisation... "only women gain real pleasure from reading". It is a fact that around seventy percent of book ( fiction ) sales are to women. Men are visually stimulated. Women are more aroused by their imaginations, invigorated by their interpretation of the written word. So the act of reading exemplifiers this natural divide. It is purely a feminine attitude or application for the consumption of new information, to say 'everyone should be reading'. Righty or wrongly... you're advocating for society, for the men, within it... to be feminised. Currently, reading only enables the internal fantasies of the decadent male cultural elite. Devoid from reality and living in an idealistic fantasy or dreamscape, of how the world 'should' be. Rather than how it actually is. Literature for men, is a decadent dream state drug. And dreams, are only for those that are asleep.
