Ok, it's been a few months since the release of "Free Spirit Soar", and after listening to the album several times, I think that today I'm better able to make a more realistic and careful analysis. It's always dangerous to declare an album a winner or a loser just on first listens. Come on, it's not easy to think that it's okay to listen to a Warlord album without Tsamis dominating the guitars, but the way this album was conceived, it's so difficult not to be in awe of the work of everyone involved. Any other band in the world (perhaps with the exception of Black Sabbath) would be more interesting to have a guitarist with his own style who would develop new ideas so that the band's sound would not remain stagnant, but this does not actually apply to Warlord, as In no way would this be accepted, for the undertaking that is "Free Spirit Soar", the guitarist in charge of the mission of playing Tsamis' compositions, should only do one thing, which would be the right thing, emulate Tsamis' guitar, and behold, Eric Juris did it perfectly, of course at one point or another you can see a little of his style in a solo section or another, but it's so minimal that it's not a bad thing in any way, it's just minimally different. Jimmy Waldo also fit like a glove, his keyboards fit perfectly with the band's sound, even if they sound less dramatic than in past eras. Philip Bynoe is still a monster, and I'm so glad he's still stuck with the band all these years. Giles Lavery also always seemed better suited to the band than Nicholas Leptos (nothing against him, but I always thought he sounded better in his band Arrayan Path than in Warlord) Lavery manages to emulate past vocalists, in the same way that he puts his own style in a section here and another there. And Mark Zonder... well, I don't think I need to talk about this drumming genius do I? Just say, "it's Mark Zonder, guys." About the album itself, I believe that the sound of this album is the most "solar" of all Warlord's albums, all previous albums were more dramatic and "lunar" than this one. For some it may be a hindrance, but not for me. It's as if "Deliver Us" and "And the Cannons..." were the soundtrack to "Dante's Inferno", "Rising out of the Ashes" and "the Holy Empire" were the soundtrack to Purgatory... and finally "Free Spirit Soar" is the soundtrack of Paradise from the "Divine Comedy". Tsamis found his Beatriz again (those who know his story should understand) and he no longer needs to go through so many challenges and sadness of our plan. His music sounds divine, even if others are playing it for him. Regarding the songs, I was very happy with Steve Blaze's contribution, composing the lyrics for The Watchman, Steve Blaze, who has been in charge of Lillian Axe since the mid-80s, is an extraordinary musician, a unique guitarist, and seeing him collaborating with another band as unique as Warlord never crossed my mind. (For those who don't know his work, I highly recommend Lillian Axe's album "Live 2002", you will be graced with heavenly guitars and very well composed songs). Returning to "Free Spirit Soar", all the other songs have their moments of musical ecstasy, but I must highlight my favorite which is Worms of the Earth which is probably the most "Warlordian" song on the album. A small negative point is the use of effects on Lavery's voice in "Alarm", her voice is so beautiful in these calmer moments, that this effect causes a certain strangeness, but at the same time I understand that due to the theme of the lyrics the use is understandable. of this effect. Finally, we must thank Mark Zonder and his companions, because Tsamis' music lives on thanks to these incredible musicians who understood exactly the right way to release these songs, in order to keep his legacy alive and in a respectful and dignified way.
