Pike Fishing with Deadbaits - Three Ways to Avoid Deep Hooking
Duncan Charman takes a look at three ways to help reduce the chances of deep hooking pike when deadbait fishing for pike, especially when legering baits.
We hope you find these simple tips useful. As Duncan states, the most important thing is to use good bite indication and to strike immediately - never wait!
Keeping the hooks towards the tail end of the bait is also very important, as pike always swallow baits tail first (so the fins are folded back and don't catch), plus popping-up baits can also give more positive runs, and helps stop pike from taking baits down before moving off.
If you are wondering why we are using single hooks on the pop-up rig, that's because we happened to be filming this at a venue where that was the rule and we had taken this rig off one of our fishing rods.
Thanks for watching, we hope to release new pike fishing tips and tricks videos regularly, so please check out our channel and why not subscribe?

มุมมอง 25K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Using a buoyant deadbait for pike fishing can be a really useful tactic, especially when there is weed and detritus on the bottom. We also then take a look at a simple way of anchoring your buoyant bait so it can ...

มุมมอง 2.8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
PikePro Cool Bag - Great Deadbait Bag for Pike Fishing A really ingenious cool bag keeps baits frozen longer, thanks to its unique adjustable volume. One of the main reasons that baits defrost is that warm air trapped in container quickly warms up the frozen content. By having an adjustable volume that effectively reduces the amount of air in the bag this Cool Bag keeps baits frozen for longer....

Pike Fishing : Tie a Knotless Knot Trace

Pike Fishing : Tie a Knotless Knot Trace
2 sets of treble hooks and you let the fish run that long before you strike? Hate to think how many swallowed hooks you have to deal with........
I take it at the end of the trace your still putting a led on? So the legs on the bed and the trace can then float up? Is that right…
Frozen means not fresh. As soon as you freeze any food it's no longer considered fresh. Doesn't matter if the food is for people or fish, it's still not fresh.
What size rod and stiffness do you use?
Awesome!!
Can I use this bobber on perch also?
Thanks for doing this video mate very helpful. I see you haven’t posted a video for over a year…..I hope you are doing well mate and everything is ok. Look forward to your return. Tight lines 🎣
How heavy of wire will this work on?
Bloody hell the full catalogue of tackle needed and bait
😂🎉❤
Use circle hooks, the most intelligent way of avoiding deep-hooking.
When I use to wade fish flats for snook and redfish, It was amazing how many times I got right on top of fish by using my Ears. I've done the same thing while canoe fishing for bass
For me depends what rig you are using. I freeline with a single circle hook. Never deep hooked and tend to leave it 30secs once I’ve noticed a take. Every pile strikes different
Could you use chopped up deadbait etc inside a pva bag inside this bomber, would that work too?
I'm just starting out Piking again since i was a kid (40 years ago) and have been watching all these videos for tackle, rigs and kit .. but the one thing I cannot find is where to fish. I'm looking for a day ticket type, still water, where i can have space to set up and experiment with ledgering and floating. A fishery that isn't too demanding with weed/trees/underwater obstacles etc where I can gain confidence setting up and maybe even catch a couple. I'm 15 Miles East of Birmingham (Atherstone) so anywhere around Nuneaton, Coventry, Hinkley, Tamworth or Leicester area would be good - can anyone help please? Thanks

First tip, check if there's big fish. How the hell am I gonna do that? Go for a swim? 🤔
The handle does look a bit long for a boat/bank style short to medium distance casting rod and including that marker ring in the premium cork handle is not necessary.
Lucky enough for Des to use my local tackle shop. Amazing brain to pick knowledge from
Run rings fine for casting ? Considering I cast u 3 oz lead with one and the ring snapped and nearly killed me and my mate flew past my ear n just missed his head aswell dangerous run rings if you ask me
He said it was for under arm casts. Most of the time on rivers, you’re only fishing less than a rod length out in the slacks. Rings are fine for this. I don’t personally use them but rings would be fine for that.
Deadly method Truthful explanation 🙏 I will try this out in Chester dee and estuary part and report back 😁
One major downside on a lot of venues is access especially rivers where parking can be few and far between -if at all - or a long way from the water. Also some good pike venues around my neck of the woods aren't fishable anymore or restricted access only, another said only after first frost which was almost 2 months into the season and another said not before 1st November.
Palomar knot for me, the easiest and strongest.
cast at the weeds that the wind blows towards
Two local Angling direct branches near me ran out of all dead baits AGAIN recently.Terrible service -good job the fishmongers have them all year round.
They come to you fresh - that is when companies like Angling Direct actually bother to stock them which half the time they run out as they did once again at two of my local stores recently. It took at least a week to get some more. It's the piking season on most waters that's only 6 months per year and still they run out.Thankfully my local fishmongers have them come rain, shine, sleet or snow.
Hot spot for crocs
Went to a local Angling direct store last week to get some Pro pike deadbaits - no deadbaits in at all and they still haven't - the same at another local AD branch and not for the first time.WTF don't they order some more when half the stock is gone? Bloody useless.
I much prefer braid over nylon but some waters don't allow mainline braid.
Circle hooks are the way to go if you don't want to deep hook a Pike. You may not hit as many bites but the fish will be hooked in the scissors every time. I'd rather miss the odd bite than potentially harm a fish due to deep hooking.
3 years of using circle hooks never deep hooked a pike, all in the scissors, take them out with your fingers, cmon Pike anglers ditch the trebles, you dont need them
Any suggestions. I’m river fishing and I have found a spot with 4-5 very large pike. Always in the same spot week after week. Cab clearing see them as the water is crystal clear. For the life of me I can’t get them to take anything. Any suggestions
Through these videos I’m learning you don’t have to be so subtle about presentation as I thought you did, hungry pike will have it
Really useful, a very helpful video. Thanks
Can we have some 8mm beads with fine bore internal hole , approx twice diameter of 18 pound mono . 0.40 x 2 max less than 1 mm . Noticed pike pro beads are 5 mm. Which will fly back through tip eye an back towards reel . This could prove fatal if have fish lifetime an bead goes onto spool . Also can there be choice colours maybe yellow an red as option to black ? Or multi coloured pack option
Noticed pike pro brought out some beads which are 5 mm Should there not be 8 mm , so as not go back through the tip eye upon casting , as if the 5mm bead was going back towards reel while playing fish lifetime could be diasterours . What we need is an 8mm bead with fine bore , twice size of 18 pound mono . Also would like option of yellow or red bead not just black
Hi. What rod you use?
pike pro rods not carp rods
is it worth having balsa sticks or any sort for popping up the bait? or it'll be OK how it is? Cheers
There's no need to put balsa or any kind of buoyancy into the bait. It will dangle in the upper water collumn. It's super effective on gravel pits and the line from the ground to the bait should at least be 2m long. Therefore you'll need a boat or baitboat to get it to the spot
Hi Des. I once saw one of your pike videos, and your tip was that you can tell the age of a lake by how big the trees are growing round the side...Talk about light bulb moment!!! I've quoted it no end of times over the years...😎😎
Great video … I’m all about , set the hook get it in quick and release the fish without too much stress , but the jury is out on braid … been using it the past 3 or 4 years on my reels, I fish big lochs in the north of Scotland so you don’t really know what the bed of the place you are fishing … some places weedy some places really rocky and setting up you have to put in to the factor I may loose a weight and such but the last few trips I’ve had I’m really not impressed with the braid I find it a bit too fine and it’s does tend to tangle far too easy with the rest of the tackle … but that’s just me
What a wonderful simple explanation of how to set up a pike floating rig. Really enjoyed your video Many thanks 👍
Thank you sir :)
Do you normally refreeze your left over baits? Many thanks.
Hey, I'm going pike fishing on Sunday to a venue that's riddled with krayfish. Would you suggest letting it raise the length of the trace?
Des is such a legend give my right Goole to go piking with him 😅
I can't tell you the amount of takes I've had with lures below my feet as its coming out of the water.
I need one of these hats.
All my years of pike fishing iv never had a problem really with sardines just hook in the tail root bend the fish slightly then put the bottom hook any where in the flank and sling it out.
