NEVER REPOT IN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER! It can cause severe damage to the roots due to it drying out very quickly in the summer months. Especially in a pond basket, wherever you got the idea repotting in the summer is the best time, it's wrong. I've been taking care of these trees for years and I can assure you repotting a tree you keep outdoors in the middle of summer does more harm than good, regardless of the species. Not trying to be rude or anything just giving you some advice. However if you keep the tree indoors you can repot anytime as you don't have to worry about the elements. Also one last thing, could you please do an update on this tree? But if you've already made an update video please just link me to it. Best of luck to you on your bonsai journey!

I fixed the same problem with a Ficus Ginseng, I noticed if I cut off a branche or leaf it wasn't leaking rubber as usual.. it wasn't in a large pot but I expected it couldn't leak rubber because the sap stream was blocked in the roots.. took it out off the pot and cut off 50% of the roots.. some fresh potting soil and the next week it looked like nothing changed.. Still yellow leaf and sprouts dropping.. but after that week a clear improvement... doing just fine now.

I honestly think the pot was to big but it didn’t need to be repotted I would have watered less for a few months not completely soaking the soil

Carmona don’t like having their roots damaged. It’s safer to wash out the substrate rather than aggressively raking as we do with other trees! Root pruning needs to be done cautiously and never more than 20% of roots starting with any tap root. After repotting keep the tree out of direct sunlight for a few weeks and don’t fertilise during that time. The long term care involves positioning the tree in a well lit area, misting and away from draughts! In many parts of the western world it is considered an indoor plant requiring temperatures above 70F. Always wire a repot in position, especially outdoor plants, but even indoor plants will want to fall over without prompting! Root rock will prevent establishment!

Grow some more trees from the cuttings.

I would definitely take the first juniper and develop it into a mame or shohin bonsai. I’ve seen a lot worse when someone gets their first tree, you didn’t necessarily mess it up too bad though, growing it into a large juniper with a thick trunk could take 10-15 years. I usually take my smaller junipers and plant them in the ground, that’s where my first bonsai is planted, I won’t take it out until the trunk is about as thick as my wrist, only thing I do is dig it up and root prune every few years. However with your first tree, i would definitely make it a mame or shohin tree. The second juniper you have there is great pre bonsai material, I have a few that I got a while ago that were very similar, I repotted them into large nursery containers and the amount of size they’ve put on is incredible, I typically just leave them alone while doing some minor pruning and wiring

Mine always ends up dead. I water it, fertilise it, talk to it, prune it, clean it, but unfortunately, they die.

Thank you so much for updating us. I have two fukien tea trees. One has the same or similar S shape to yours, and the other is upright but smaller. Both trees came with compost type soil and after watering them, their soils look very muddy. I have akadama based bonsai soil laying around. Should I repot both of them in the akadama soil? I also wanna get the basket plastic pot like yours. This is to try to develop the smaller upright tree. I hope it works. Great video and I subscribed!

Seemed like there might've been a bit too much organics in the mix. I think the original pot would've been ok with a mix that had a lot less organics. It'll be interesting to see the results.

Got a Juniper Pfitziana at about this stage. Liked your other video where you said "one bonsai is zero bonsai" now I have 7. Appreciated the tip of it helps spread your focus so you don't end up over processing one tree!

One more: Good water makes everything easier. Bad water kills. The tap water has either chlorine or chloramine. Both lead to salt accumulating in your soil. Chlorine is easily identified by smell, and if you store tap water for a day or two, chlorine will evaporate and water will be good to use. Chloramine is worse. It does not smell, and storing water does not help. If your plants were doing great for quite a while, and then started getting worse and worse for no apparent reason, this is probably salt accumulation. I am currently feeding my plants with bottled drinking water to wash away the salt that has accumulated. This can get quite expensive. So I've just bought some liquid designed to fix the problem. I haven't tried it yet, so I cannot recommend it. In addition, most plants prefer slightly acidic soil/water. Azaleas, camellias, gardenias and rhododendrons like it more strongly acidic. But plants of fabaceae (bean) family like their soil/water alkaline. Most beans (wisteria, carob, etc.) are not that sensitive, but sweet broom is very sensitive, give massive leaf fall, and I am having a lot of trouble with mine. Do your research.

I think the front is your back to the tree. I had removed every branch up to the large on. And make that the first branch. Remember if you to see the trunk is a bush and not a tree 😂

I don't think your ficus is sick at all. Yellowing leaves are fairly normal, there was plenty of healthy growth. I just remove the yellowing leaves if they bother me.

Looks like the pot is too wide, you would have water sitting on the concave bit at the bottom which will cause root issues, if still developing a narrower, taller pot, like a standard nursery pot with a higher gravity column will give you better drainage.

You was dead on with what the problem was. Now that it’s in good bonsai soil it will do great. My only concern now is the pot. That new pot may keep the soil to dry and give you issues. Just a heads up.

Father and son involved with bonsai working together and learning together can’t get better than that, unfortunately my sons and grand children are not interested in the art of bonsai. Great to find your channel guys. Things can only get better.
