    What a great conversation! I'm always fascinated by which books publishers decide to throw their money behind. As Sophia points out, Sally Rooney does not need a splashy party with merch and baked goods to sell her book, she doesn't even need to show up for her own party, lol! But publishers do love backing a sure thing. I have enormous respect for authors who (can and want to) step in and control their own marketing, as much as possible. It doesn't always move the needle on book sales but it do think it gives some semblance of control in an industry that is famously fickle.

I think they are having a moment, with status-y pencils like Blackwings. 3. There is no official way to pronounce moleskine, according to the company! www.marketplace.org/2013/05/20/moleskines-ceo-papers-advantages-and-how-pronounce-moleskine/ “We want people to feel free to say the name the way they want. Having said that, “moleskin” as a word is originally an English word. So the English pronunciation is ‘Mole-skin.’ But then you know, it was moved to France and over there, an ‘e’ was added and the French pronunciation is ‘mol-ey-skine.’” www.huffpost.com/entry/how-to-pronounce-moleskine_n_5797cc92e4b0d3568f84ebee So don’t feel bad about how you say it!

    Can you Separate the Art from the Artist? - NO - If it had been otherwise, their work would have been different - better or worse - You liked this work or you didn't - In the latter case, it doesn't matter - it will only be one of countless uninteresting works destined for destruction - You liked this work - It wouldn't have existed without what they were - Of course, you can imagine that if they had been different, their work would have been different too, but better and more moral and more pleasant - You are with the choice to judge the artist and say NO - You are with the choice to judge the work and say NO - works do not feel anything, not even rejection or disgust - nor do dead artists - There is no shortage of interesting works made by honest, responsible and studious workers - But you are neither a priest, nor a psychologist, nor a judge nor a policeman - So you still have the choice to say: I don't care and I love his work too much to do without it - I take him as he is

      Very bad people might even steal the art, they pass as their own - so the person who produced that piece of art gets victimized twice - first they get seperated from their own art and later THAT art get censored and swept under the rug, because the thief did such terrible things that nothing they produced should be loved anymore... Hypocritical views of this commentator: the Nobel prize winner gets hated, because she stood with her husband and did NOT speak of his vile behaviour - doing "nothing" tainted HER work! JK Rowling DID speak out, to support victims of trespassing, but now SHE is the bad person, because "she is not affected herself and should not stir the waters". Whatever women do - they are held responsible for the bad things others around them do. If they keep quiet, they are enabeling bullies / if they speak up, they are said to spew hate! WHAT do you want a grown up person to do, if they find out, something is going wrong (maybe for a long time already)???

    • @mr.puckerie4800
      @mr.puckerie4800 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LisaBeta-42 To your first assertion, T. S. Eliot famously said, “Good writers borrow. Great writers steal.” Every artist knows this; What this video's creator, Louise Johnson's philosophy proposes is that people should wait around for an artist who morally-conscionable and sanitized to one's liking in order to appreciate art, a separate entity that doesn't follow the same rules of social accountability as one's beliefs & behavior does. Art, as it's own separate entity, does what morality can not: It pushes the boundaries of provocativeness; All great art does this; Morality can not & does not; should not; Art draws it's own air to breathe, making it diametrically-opposed to an artist's sense of morality, making them two separate entities ...and your willingness, your choice to conflate morality & appreciation, artist & the art is dumbfoundedly-limited to the point of stupidity. If you're starving to death on a desert island and just sustained your life by eating a tasty pork sandwich, Is vomiting it out after discovering it's human meat gonna change the sustenance your body would otherwise receive from it? Your body doesn't care, only your brain does. Your body still thinks it's tasty. Your body still gets it's sustenance. Same goes with art appreciation. An "artist" is just a label. My thinking is to not be overtly affected by labels. I could be hit on the head and forget who Caravaggio is or Tolkien or J. K. Rowling or whomever; Despite being unable to base my sense of whom the artist is, I'm still going to enjoy the art. It is because of this, art itself remains it's own thing. Yeah, it's reductive... but you're not supposed to give a shit enough to contradict the nature of aesthetics. Why? Because how art affects you initially is reductive; I like to hold on to that. Over-complicating it comes afterwards. By denying yourself (and others) by placing greater importance to the Messenger, rather than the Message is a terrible tragedy only leads shallow-thinking the stunting of one's developmental growth.

    Really impressed publishing houses here in the arab country don't have these concepts to build a community to support authors and writers that's why arab authors don't profit from there books any penny once they sell it they took the cheap money which will not help the authors to live and goodbye for arab authors, they will be dead before living and theur writings in the drawers for eternity. Damm on us how we accept these things, for that i didn't accept to work with any publishing houses here.

    A comment on Rowling: The world is a wicked place, and anyone who would defend women and girls needs some moral courage. In my opinion Rowling has shown such moral courage by standing up to the popular bullies, whereas you are seeking to appease the trendy and popular bullies by throwing Rowling under the bus. No doubt you will continue to be surprised and dismayed to find that so many of your heros (the popular bullies) are actually villains. I'll bet you cannot even articulate what Rowling said that was supposedly so terrible. Not without repeating lies. BTW, I too stand with Maya.

    • @kingerz

      Rowling is bullying some very vulnerable people with extremely toxic words. She's just insulting trans people at this point, labelling transwomen “Crossdressing straight men". Imane is even suing her for her attacks over the boxing .

    • @johnwhelan9663
      @johnwhelan9663 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kingerz in what context do you claim she used that phrase? crossdressing straight men exist. Sorry, but that's just true. And if you are implying she ever said that all trans women are cross dressing straight men, that would be a lie. And Imane trying to use use a French criminal court to teach an English woman how to speak English is just ludicrous. Also women's sports are inherently discriminatory - the whole point is to exclude men (and part-men) so that biological women may compete. I see only two choices- either accept that such discrimination is justified in this instance, or abolish women's sports entirely. While we do not know the medical details, we know that Imane failed a gender test and is at least partly male. Hence I agree with Rowling that she should not be competing in a woman's category

    A comment on the Gaiman case: Gaiman is merely exposed as practicing more-or-less what he preaches. He has long entertained predatory fantasies while rejecting traditional morality. Which is not a good thing when combined with wealth and power.. I suppose this does not necessarily make him a predator, but now that we know he is one,, nobody has any right to be particularly surprised.

  • @johnwhelan9663
    @johnwhelan9663 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A comment on the Monro case: She sure is no Marion Zimmer Bradley. She committed no sexual abuse; nor was she complicit, either before or after the fact. Her youngest daughter was 25 before Monro even found out. She committed no crimes. She did not even break any of the 10 commandments. Her sin is that she associated with a known sinner. Which, as I recall, was one of the charges against Jesus. What was to be done with Fremlin? If he was not be put to death (a question in which Monro had no say), then someone needed to associate with him. No 80-year old man is an island. If his own wife did not look after him, someone else would have had to. Who is better qualified t o keep him out of trouble than his own wife? So I don't really get the hand-wringing here. But it fits with a pattern I have noticed of certain progressives being very preoccupied with concepts of social contagion and guilt-by-association.

      According to the article by her daughter, she initially told her stepmother and father about the abuse and was told she shouldn't tell her mother. When she was 25, she finally told her mother and then reported the abuse to the authorities. Her stepfather was charged and eventually pleaded guilty. Alice told her daughter that she told her too late and that she couldn't leave him. This would have been known to people who were involved and people who knew the family but wasn't really reported on at the time. Her daughter chose to make a public statement after her mother's death. Likely because her mother was being celebrated and "remembered" so fondly and her daughter wanted people to know that while her mother might have been a great writer, she wasn't such a great person. In fact, other allegations have come out about Fremlin and apparently at one point Munro told her daughter that she thought Fremlin might be responsible for the rape and murder of a 12 year old girl in 1959. Yet, even suspecting her husband of murder and his own admission that he sexually assaulted her daughter wasn't enough to get Munro to leave him. I can't even imagine.

    Great video, love tour channel. If you ever come to the UK there's a great indi bookshop in Bath called Mr B's and a specialist sci-fi and fantasy bookshop in Oxford.

    No way I was writing the same title but in some little difference. Thinking that we have telepathy.

    This discussion. Wow. It was everything I needed to hear. Both of you articulated where you are in your writer lives so well. As a querying writer in middle age without children I struggle with many of these issues and the imposter syndrome that comes with it. Thanks so much for this!

    This is so helpful - I am 29 now and my husband and I are getting ready to start trying to have kids, and this is a topic I have always been interested in and worried about. Thank you for speaking so candidly. I am devouring your podcast!!!

    I remember that first outing after having our little one was surreal. Nice to see that you got to get out and enjoy quiet time. So important to do for our mental health ❤
