Heavy guitars in a mix. Some philosophies & know-how
Sculpting a guitar sound for a band context such as a recording may have it's differences compared to playing by yourself at home. I thought it would be interesting to look at the a heavy rock/metal guitar sound from a producers point of view. So I met up with producer (and guitarist) Oscar Björk from Heartifact studio to have a chat around that. Learning about guitar sound in a band and mix context has helped me a lot in improving my productions and general work as a guitarist. If you have struggles with that I hope this video will help you to open up for new ways to look at your guitar sound and start making recordings better suited for it's target.

    Nice demo Jonatan, wondering if you can shed some light on the jumbo frets, are they super tall? neck back shape wide and flat or traditional Jackson "D" shape? How easy it easy to volume swell with that volume kicked down and away from where it is on my '84-86 Usa Soloists? I worry the trem arm will get in the way. Im looking to add a 3 singles soloist and for the life of me cant seem to find a 3 tite '84 of any kind. thank you!

      @@TheSplitzMusic Hi man. Frets are jumbo, BUT not the biggest I’ve had. To me it seems so many guitars come out with jumbo frets, but they’re just a tiny bit too narrow and not as high as I (and u?) would want them. I can compare it to a refretted strat I have with Wagner 9770 (equals Dunlop 6000) that are 1.47mm high and 2.99mm wide. That is real Jumbo as I think of it. These are just a tad below it, but it matters. Still works though. I’m on traveling feets now, but can try measuring when back home if I remember. The back of it is D. I would have loved it to be flatter, but as it is not really think it still works for me. The tremolo arm is a bit in the way. It disturbs me a liiittle when playing live, as I am implementing both volume and tone knob quite much in my playing at the stages. It seems we have similar reasons to get a guitar like this. I couldn’t find an oldie either so so went with this and made it my own. It’s been a great ride and I’m really liking this guitar, specially for how it is at now. But as you’ve accurately noticed, some details could be a tiny bit improved. Hope this answered your questions. Just come back if there’s anything more u wonder about this axe! Great to hear from you. Cheers!! /Jonatan

    The Marshall bits sound tighter and bigger, my favorite. The clean parts not bad either since the pedal is designed for amp's clean channel. The Vox AC30s bits are too muddy, which is ironic since Satchurator should pair nicely with Vox amps for the obvious reason. Also, if you turn the tone and volume all the way up and gain on half, you will get "modernized" Nirvana's Nevermind tones.........

    • @jonatanbergmusician
      @jonatanbergmusician 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MikeCarvin Well spotted. I guess I agree. I also prefer this into a somewhat dirty amp, like the Marshall in this example. I’m glad they did this take on the DS-1. Considering how much of a classic the DS-1 is I think it should be many more boxes based on it, as with the Tubescreamer for example. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Cheers!

      @@jonatanbergmusician Yeah this is the modern take of the Boss DS1 which is close to my heart. That's why I LOVE the Satchurator so much that I wanna get a second one. I see why many people don't like it since the tone spectrum of Satch is even wider than DS1 and most are not used to use the tone between 8 to 10 o clock, the range where you find the most usable sounds, as well as lack of volume. But you already demonstrated how to bring out the best of it: max the volume when necessary so it matches the clean sounds, and turn the gain all the way down when applying the MORE switch. I am quite sure it will sit on the mix nicely. Rock on!

    • @jonatanbergmusician
      @jonatanbergmusician 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Yepp you have to learn about the tone knob… it’s someting else on these DS-1 style pedals. Hope I made it come through here. I kind of wish the Satchurator had a greater success. But nowadays I guess the size is a thing that’s not to it’s advantage… If it would be possible to turn on the moore switch via a foot controller it would have made it’s uses more flexible as well. Still like it for what it is😊 Cheers man. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and knowledge on it!

    Nice! I wonder if it works like a Boss DS1, meaning the pedal acts as a preamp. A ds1 plugged into a power amp only ( or by-passing the head's preamp of your amp ) will give a total different pedal.

    • @jonatanbergmusician
      @jonatanbergmusician 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! That's an interesting question. I have actually never tried using either of these right into a power amp. As you say, I'm sure you'll get a pretty different character that way. Anyway, the term "preamp" in a pedal form is wildly used and I think that often it's just a way of saying that it has broad eq possibilities. Not saying either of these are marketed as preamps, but as the subject kinda got brought up... For what it's worth I feel that u definitely hear the DS-1 origin in the VOX Satshurator. Although I'd say that the DS-1 has a more pronounced bass/low mid thump. And the Satchurator has a more "even" tonal spectrum if u get what I mean, as if the DS-1 had its highest peaks and valleys softened. That's my impression of the Satchurator. Hope that helps! Thanks for tuning in and Hope to see you again here on the channel! Cheers! /Jonatan

    That's a nice tone. Reminds me a bit of early Machine Head or some 90s Gothenburg. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. My views on Marshall/Mesa/5150 have changed over the years. These days I tend to boost a JCM800 very hard in plug ins because there is more clarity and a tighter low end with an emphasis on upper midrange. Like Slayer but with more low end. But when I was younger I liked the Mesa/5150 sound better. I consider them a little flabby and loose/fizzy now because of all the Mesa's low end and the 5150s preamp gain, but this makes me want to bring their tone back into my songs if I can blend them just right. Nice Jackson as well. They are my favorite brand and I own 50-60 of them that I have collected over 30 years (at least the Japanese made ones). :)

    Just a short thing on the "Tight" knob that wasn't mentioned in the video. It controls how much bass is being let through before the distortion circuit. When Tight is turned low, more bass is being let through before the gain, so that when the distortion comes on it brings out lots of harmonics to the bass frequencies, which affects the tone in this beautiful, creative way. Hence I liked it being a bit Moore "loose" on the lead parts, letting more harmonics and a broader tone spectrum being added for them leads, adding detail and dynamics. Calling it 4-band eq maybe isn’t properly right, but an easy way to divide the knobs. Since you’re ”loosing” bass infront at tighter settings u might want to make up for that with the regular bass knob. Cheers! /Jonatan

    I have had at least 4 of these over the years. I keep trying to find something better and end up selling them only to regret it later. I keep going back to this pedal. Something about the midrange voicing, tight low end and smooth highs. I also will use it to overdrive a dirty amp. The gain knob is useable in its entire range as is the tone knob. With volume above unity level and gain around 10:00 or more I find that it has just the right amount of compression to give me killer pick attack for leads. It’s nice to see someone who also appreciates this box. Thank you for your video. Your video on this pedal is one of the few ones that actually does justice to how great this pedal can sound. This is awesome, looks to be a great guitar and some really cool mods, its true, you don't need an expensive guitar to get a great guitar, back in the 90´s I think the biggest bang for the buck would be a Yamaha electric guitar because they were quite a lot better quality vise compared to Squier and Epiphone for example. I still have an Yamaha Pacifica SD120 from the mid 90´s that's a really awesome guitar, back then it cost like 3000 SEK or around 300 USD... Keep up the good work with making videos :D

    Hi Jonatan, I got this pedal. I was very young, early 80s, with no money and little experience. I wanted a flanger, because I was obsessed with the Andy Summers sound, but I couldn't afford the Deluxe E.M. by EHX. This Ibanez FL9 was the cheapest available at the time and I bought it. But despite the price, this pedal in a certain way has its own personality and versatility and even though I later bought the Deluxe E.M., I still kept the "little" yellow pedal for a few years, before giving it to a friend .

      @@marcellourban8898 Hello Marcel! Cool, thanks for sharing your story! I bet it was a very good alternative, specially at that time. I agree on it’s versitility, very allround for being an analog classic. Has such a cool vintage look too😊 Thanks for checking in! Cheers /Jonatan

      @@jakes1785 Hi man! Thanks, yeah I’m really diggin’ this one. Perhaps not the general work horse, but very inspiring and a bit odd. I have no thoughts on selling it at the moment. Planning on using it on a certain recording in about 2years. But I guess you should never say never…😉 Take care and thanks for checking in!

    Hi, the delay knob on flanger pedals works counter-clockwise: for a chorusy flanger turn it to the left...for a thinner-metallic flanger put it on the right; that's how I use it...chorusy on clean (knob to the left), jet flanger with distortion (knob to the right); also the Width knob stops working when at Max. I discovered the Width thing on several forums.
