I went to scenic art school for 2 months. Everybody there is so pretentious it's crazy, it was basically Twitter but every argument was about something subjective. Hated it.

I 100% agree with this your point about abstract art. It’s nice but some of us like to tell a story with our art and we want that story to be understood by everyone. You shouldn’t need an essays to explain your art because it’s just a bunch of squiggle lines or a meaningless red paint stroke across a canvas. Sounds like some of your old classmates are jealous. Creative fields have become even more classist and less diverse than 30 years ago because of the arrogance and lack of funding (in the UK anyway). I feel like some creatives almost want to keep it that way and don’t want diversity in the field.

in art school at the moment and oh im struggling so hard. attending class feels useless sometimes and it breaks my heart because i wanted to enjoy this so much but i really just disagree with the course structure and culture. i also notice a lot of people in my course struggling and being discouraged (+breedings this weird comparison and disparity in quality of work) just because of the course's lack of emphasis on foundational skills and i dont think art has to be based on technical skill level at all (they emphasise that so much lol) but i think it is still so important because it is a building block to work from, it builds confidence to express more conceptual ideas if that makes sense. and that aside yeah i personally just struggle socially, i guess theres a certain crowd that to me feel really pretentious and judgey to people outside their bubble i find it hard to connect idk

The academies, courses, workshops and art schools are a world in themselves, but it is a false world because it is subsidized, the system supports it, as it supports the supermarket system or the food system, or football, religion, porn and bread and circuses. For this, no artist who is not very stupid or limited will find the truth and revelation there, officially studying only serves as a temporary phase and a stimulus and incentive that ultimately proves false. In the end nothing guarantees anything and You are alone in the world, and without financial support, you are in a solitary game with death. We live in the world of death, which is governed by a system based on mass priorities and imperatives. How many famous artists had backup advantage? Almost all or all of them, and many of those who did not have it died in the drama, alcoholics , physically or mentally ill, their effort being in vain in their time, etc. The system is based on money as a fixed end in itself, the system is anti-artistic, it is perfect that it be that way

My take is that there are 2 main components - art skill and art concept. The problem is that art school has to exist in a university context and therefore they push concept and disregard skill. My experience as an artist however is that the 2 need to be developed together, even skill before concept. It's ridiculous to get young adults out of high school in and expect them to go high finished conceptual with very basic skill building. We all have our own bias so I would look carefully at the graduates of a course as well as the instructors. If you're not vibing with it then don't go. Note: I was rejected by art school and ended up doing design. I did a mfa however.

This is not only a problem in the art industry/academe but the whole rotten educational system. Education should be enriching and is adaptable to students and must nourish them.

Wow, I'm so glad they were not able to brain wash you! I'm an artist doing realistic animal sculptures and I've repeatedly heard sentences like "this looks absolutely great, but this can't be called art, right? It's rather a craft, because it's just a depiction of reality". It's sometimes tough when you have to justify that you really want to do what the old masters did...

100% agree. It's still school, even if it's art, filled with ego and rules. It's all a bit wanky. I dig some design school, I get what they were teaching, but I wasn't the right fit, and left because I wanted to make album covers but make cereal boxes. Found art competitions the same, they were just patting the back of their art friends. We are all equal, and should be appreciated equally. Whatever you make, you will meet folks that love what you do, and we shouldn't care what naysayers think. I ended up designing tshirt art at a screenprinter, then a games company saw my private fantasy work and I did game art for a decade. Eventually did band art, just because they dug my stuff. They kinda found me. So I reckon, keep your course, onward and upwards, by just doing you.
