Somewhere on TH-cam is a 19 minute video where the gentleman gets into the science of this NO OX product.

Ron’s trains and things. The initial video discusses non polar products to clean the track and then how to apply the no ox id and then he had a follow up video a year later discussing the immediate results and then the long term results.

It was pretty annoying to say the least. Still, It's a beauty of a model.

Am I imagining that the engine has the very Canadian "nose headlight "? If yes did you do it yourself? Could I see it run.?does it also have ditch lights

@@jeffallen5698 Yes I did the nose light myself with a Miniatures by Eric detail part. Unfortunately I haven't worked up the courage to install the light. I have the light, I'm just too chicken.

Well too late for me. I used a bright boy then went over again with 1000 grit sandpaper which did the trick very nicely.

I don't think it matters. I would go out on a limb and say that having metal wheels might be better? But again I don't think it makes a difference when it's applied correctly. As I said in the video, clean it all off after letting it sit for 24 hrs to penetrate the rail. There should be no evidence of it after you're done. Good luck! You won't be disappointed.

Not really sure what you’re trying to say. Yes I used an abrasive to clean my rails before I applied the no-ox. I also used a very very fine sand paper to “polish” it. Bottom line is after applying no-ox to my rails and to my locomotive wheels I have had zero instances of track issues due to dirty track. Even after weeks of no running. Vacuum up any dust and run trains. Snd I’m not the only one experiencing these results.

I would scratch my head why I needed to clean my track almost every other week when I was using Isopropyl Alcohol. Ever since using No-ox my rails are always clean and my trains run smooth as silk. Miracle product indeed! I will be swapping all my wheels to metal on of these days.

No-ox appears to prevent the black from happening. I don't know how the science works, I just know that it does. I'm working on over a year of no serious track cleaning! Only vacuuming now. Gotta do it right otherwise you could have problems. Clean your track really well, clean your loco wheels, you can even clean your rolling stock wheels if you want to start from ground zero (I didn't), apply no-ox sparingly around your layout, then run your Locos and spread it around all your tracks. Let it sit for a day, then wipe the excess off the track and the loco wheels then enjoy problem free running! Keep in mind this stuff won't fix electrical issues.

I use inbox wipe a little in one spot every 2 feet then run your trains around it’s been about a year and a half and I have not had any problems yet . Also you will never clean your metal wheels again’ nice and shiny wheels. Try inbox I thank you guys be very very HAPPY . and it work very good on the switches too

From what I’ve seen and heard, the black is caused by micro arcing and no ox prevents the micro arcing.

None. So long was you don't slop it all over the track. You don't need much. After you let it sit and penetrate the rail you then wipe any excess off the rails with a clean cloth.

Yes by Atlas. Picked it up on Ebay a while back for a song. NCE decoder in it that I wan't to upgrade to a TCS eventually.

Sorry to hear that. Have you tried contacting Rapido for help. Their customer service is excellent. I for one hope they never abandon N Scale. I have some really cool Canadian stuff because of them.

It's an atlas GP9. I added the detail parts. No sound in that one unfortunately.

Garbage? Nah. It was a little annoying yes, but it's hardly junk. Anyhow, it's wasn't that hard to get running well, just some tinkering. Any experienced model railroader should be used to that by now. Never purchased the LRC cars so I can't really say anything about those. Thanks for the comment though.

@@jdigg2007 I'm not even sure where to begin tinkering with these. And no...for the money, I shouldn't have to "tinker.' Never had to tinker with my Prairie Shadow Alco' s. They are bullet-proof. I don't know if this is a chip problem, since they don't run more than a couple of inches even on flat track, or if it's a motor issue, or.....

I’ve said this to many people already. I have had to tinker with just about every locomotive I’ve owned to get them running how I like them. Only one I didn’t have to was my GMD1. I can’t speak for your FP9A, but with mine the main issues were excessive crud on the wheels. The tab thing I mentioned in the video was just a coincidence. Once all the crud was dealt with the performance problems went away. And not to be nit-picky, the Prairie Shadows locomotive was also made by Rapido, it was a partnership with Jeff at PS.

@@jdigg2007 yes, I know, but they are so much better than these. I actually think they need a touch more weight in them. The Alco's are quite a bit heavier than these. Perhaps that might solve the problem. Hard to pinpoint exactly what's going on with mine.

Quality control on these things was no-existent!

Technical wizardry! Ha thanksI really can't take that much credit. It wasn't really that complicated. Just removing the truck side frames and cleaning it all up.

Hello and thanks! The trestle I purchased as a kit but it came as a bag of sticks and a template so it's also sort of handmade! Unfortunately the owner of the company I bought it from, black bear construction company, passed away and the company went out of business.

Hey thanks for the feedback! Regarding the loco not working smoothly out of the box. I agree it would have been less annoying for me if it ran perfectly from the moment I placed it on the rails, but it didn't. While it was frustrating, I was "fine" with it as I'm very comfortable with taking my locomotives apart to clean and tweak them. And let's be honest here, if you're in this hobby you should be really comfortable with taking your trains apart. I have taken all my locomotives apart for one reason or another, new, used, whatever. Except for my 2014 GMD1, I've taken them all apart. So I did with this one as well, and I resolved the issue on my own, but that's me. Besides, I knew I didn't want the traction tire so I was taking it apart anyway. Long story short, the issue really seems to have been the blackened wheels, because my unit has had no issues since. I've examined the brass tabs since and there is no way that was this issue. It was just a coincidence that it ran better after pressing on them.

@@jdigg2007 Thanks for the update I'm sure if Southern Pacific had these on the roster I would already own a couple, and be happy with that. Still may purchase as a one off Canadian unit. Yes eventually shells must come off for various maintenance items. Guess my point is to not accept a product that doesn't work from day one, believe me I know as I know I have a Broadway Limited steam unit that is to late to return and will probably be figuring it out for myself.

@@foxs683ss Don't get me wrong, if I couldn't get it going I would have returned it. Like I say in the Video Rapido's service is top notch.

I hear what people are saying that with the cost of the models they should be flawless. I get that. That being said, Every model train I own has had to be opened up and tinkered with to get them to run better. The only one I've not had to open up yet (strangely enough) is my first run GMD1.

@@jdigg2007 Every Kato and new Bachmann and ScaleTrains that I have purchased needed no tinkering. They ran perfectly out of the box.

I am having the same problem. I bought two of them, 1 runs fine but the other one will run for about 1 or two inches and then short circuits my layout. I haven't been brave enough to open it up yet, would like some instructions from Rapido before I do. I love the detail and sound though but what's the use if it doesn't run.

All I can say is make sure the wheels are clean and check that there's no oil or grease fouling up the axle with the contact strip. And as with every model manufacture loco out there, give it some run time.

Just an update: Gauging the wheels (mine were out quite a bit) fixed the shorting issue. Also swapping the traction tire axle with the other one for the most part fixed the stalling issue. You are right by just running it will improve over time. BTW great video.

Mine only likes to run about full speed and just stops sometimes even on straight track. Shorts out sometimes on switches. Track and switches all Kato. Replaced traction tire axle with the one in parts bag. Nice looking loco but is a pile of junk.

Well, I tinkered with mine and got it running beautifully. Short of doing that you could contact Rapido customer service and get some help.

Ya that was a bit of a head scratcher for me. At least they provide another wheel set to swap it out!

@@jdigg2007 if you haven’t bought one or two prairie shadows have the N FPA4 and you can never have enough MLW/Alco power.

Definitely wait until after painting and ballasting as you'll be dealing with paint and glue on the track and cleaning over and over. I didn't do it until all that was done on my layout. I agree with the bright boy track eraser, it scratches up the rail pretty good that's why I went over again with a very fine grit sandpaper to make sure everything shines. Once the No ox is applied and allowed to penetrate the rail, no more cleaning with Alcohol.

Sorry, I haven't no. I wasn't planning on it though. Have you downloaded the decoder manual from Rapido's site? you will need to figure out which AUX# is the number boards and edit the applicable CV for brightness. Pages 79 through to 83 in the manual.

@@jdigg2007 No I haven't. I'll will do that. This is my first LokSound unit and I'm kinda afraid that fiddling with the decoder CV's without using a Lok Programmer could be trouble.

I get that, if you need any help let me know. Two heads are better than one!

@@jdigg2007 thanks for the review , you did a great job . I have a C40-8m and had to returned it 2 times, there was no motor sound .... I also have The Canadian in Pacman colors , it's beautifull and also finicky , had the same problem with the pick up , at first the lights were flashing a lot because of oily wheels , it's now ok . Had to change all the couplers to get longer shanks , the cars are so close coupling there was a lot of derailments mainly in S curves where all my other rolling stock never had problem. I gave more than 250 passengers cars , 160 locomotives and 850 freight cars , not to brag but to tell you I am not an under the Christmas tree modelers !!! They make great looking products but when you buy RAPIDO , get ready to work on these models .... switch is sad . I tried without success to lower the overall sound on my C40-8m and while doing so I lost the front headlight .... Had to reset to factory default ! Their models are incredible

@@louisletourneau3429 Thanks! That's a lot of trains dude. I have a few but my layout is small so I still fill it up. Going to expand one of these days when I find the time. My engine is still running great (crossed fingers) so I am pretty sure it was the wheels. There was a lot of gunk on them. I do agree that RAPIDO models are a bit finicky but the detail on them is so incredible and being Canadian I fell a duty to support them. For example, I bought their Canadian mid train dome but can't run it as I have a couple of tighter curves on the layout that it can't handle. For now I run Kato's Via passenger set with this Loco. One day I'll join a club and run an epically Canadian passenger train!
