Mark's Campers
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 ต.ค. 2022
Hi, im Mark. Some of you may know me from the TH-cam channel Mark's Wheels.
I have started this new channel to showcase my previous, current and future DIY campervan builds.
My previous van was a 2000 LDV Convoy which was an ex Greenwich council van. The van was converted using parts from our broken caravan swapped into the LDV after fully insulating it and was quite a cosy, almost stealth camper for Heather (the wife) and i.
The van we decided on was a 2011 Fiat Ducato ex PTS ambulance. This had the benefit of front and rear air conditioning, already insulated and panelled and fitted with large windows all round.
I managed to build a bigger bed, fitted LiFePo4 batteries with a charge controller and 120w solar panel on the roof. The toilet was a home made composting toilet and we had a 70 litre fresh and 40 litre grey water tanks.
The next build we are looking at needs to fit a couple of children. I will be recording the design, and build process on Mark's Campers.

HOW TO fit a SPLIT CHARGE RELAY to your CAMPERVAN

Build your own COMPOSTING TOILET from ECO-SHIT

Ok, i'll admit, the name won me over lol! In our old van, i built a composting toilet as they are very expensive to buy. We decided on a composting toilet rather than a chemical one as we didn't want to keep having to search for somewhere to empty it safely. After much thinking, we decided to build one for the new van but bigger and better. A version 2.0 and here it is! You can also find me on ...

Hi how did you get rid of the ambulance stain. I’ve got an open reach one and it’s a 2014. But I can not get rid of the decal stain
Great job but maybe get some black head screws to replace the silver ones for a better finish ...JMO of course..👍👍
Good idea! I'll get some ordered
I used to have aT4 Carravelle the second heater controls are for a rear heater Also if its a diesel one of the extra switches may be for extra glow plug reheating if relay or preheating circuit been bypassed Personal thing but the Fablon on units appears to be just stuck on I recon its pine under that? Id just peel it all off if it still good just go with pine or if its solid but looks a mess key them by sanding and just paint them whatever you wish with an eggshell finish kitchen cupboard paint which wont peel like the fablon :) The seats, rock n roll carpet etc will look like new if just wet vac. I think the Grill would look better satin black to just break things up ;) Wheels and tyres its up to you but id leave them its more profit at the end if the next owner wants to let them do it to their taste at least it has new tyres. Mine was a nice Van 2.5 TDI na but drove nice with its comedic large bus steering wheel. Looks like a good project just needs good clean and some previous bodges undoing
Thanks for the advice. I might have a go at removing the covering then and leave the wood on show. Thanks for watching

@@Markscampers My pleasure..
Black side panel looks great
Thanks I wasn't sue at first but i definitely prefer it. Will look even better with the black water filler and electric hookup
@@Markscampers I'm forever doing work on mine, I have learnt a lot since having it though
Hi , good video , thanks. Need a bit of help though, I have swapped steering wheel and fitted the cruise switch , but I can't find anyone who can do the software update ? Did you get it to work ? Any suggestions for someone who can do it ? Thanks
Where are you located?

Thanks for the video as this is exactly what I need to get. I can only find £300 steering wheels on eBay. Any ideas? Thanks
Have a look for the vauxhall and nissan variants. Should give you a few more options
Watching on catch up. Really enjoying the channel so far. You do make things simple so thanks
Thanks for watching
Fantastic video. The easiest way to fit a window I’ve so far seen on TH-cam. Will do this when I convert mine in future
Thank for commenting ☺️
I tried to wet the foam and it takes in muisture
You may have used the wrong foam. You need closed cell foam not open cell
@@Markscampers I'm from New Zealand, there isn't such verity here
Reflectix is aluminum which is highly conductive. It is never insulation only a radiant barrier.
Thanks for watching
I look forward to seeing progression, don't swear too much haha 👍
Lol. Thanks for watching
Maybe the first switch is for the for the rear window and the second is for the wing mirrors... Maybe possibly.... Oh I don't know..LOL
Good shout. I'll be checking that. Thanks for watching
@@Markscampers No worries 👍🏻
Great stuff. What softwood did you use for the sub frame (dimensions)?
I can't remember to be honest. I was from B and Q and came in a pack of eight
Nice 🤙🏻
Thanks! 😁
Hi Mark, when you attached the cartridge for the blinds/fly net did you screw it through the ply into the metal frame?
No, it's only screwed into the plywood
cheers Mark.
Thanks - I'm (almost) sold.. any further observations on the 'eco-shit' after some usage?
It works well to be honest. I much prefer this over the one i made for our old camper. Plus it's got the wifes approval so must be good!
Don’t want this to come across as being critical. Sharing for others to consider for their build. Reflectix (brand name) type product is used to deal with radiant energy, not conductive. Sandwiching it between the floor and something else, renders it useless. It needs an air gap to “reflect” the radiant energy back to its source. XPS foam is the way to go for floor insulation. No battens necessary. Floor+XPS+Plywood=good system. By the way, the walls look fantastic. Way to go!
Thanks for that. Will bear that in mind for the next build
Did you have any issues with the metal walls warping? I have seen some websites and other videos say that you need to put on a very light coat to prevent the bowing/warping of the metal exterior which can be viewed from the outside of the van. Also, the foam didn’t appear to be going on in a thin uniform layer. Is that because you used the pin point nozzle instead of a fan nozzle?
No, the walls have been fine. I realised about halfway through that i could have done with a better nozzle. The end result still works well though
Hey there. I was wondering as going to do this soon. Do u not put silver foil on first then say foam insulation between battons. Then ply it all. ? Not aure as so many videos about doing this. Cheers
You can do it that way to for a vapour barrier or you can foam the lot. Both options have their pro's and con's
Great video mark Little tipANY rock wall should not be tightly packed as it works and breaths so loosely is the best way 👍
Good tip. I think the video probably looks like its packed pretty tight but it's not. There are some places where i had to cram it in as they were a bit hard to reach but then try and pull it back out after to thin it out
Mark can I ask you a silly question what screws do you use to go from wood to metal? Great vid well explained 👍
Thanks. The screws are normal wood screws but with a pilot hole drilled first
Wow that's some how to make a bad floor lol.
Lol thanks for watching Pete
Really enjoying your videos. Do you find your Renault a nice comfy van to drive? Keep up the great work Gary
Thank you Gary. The van is very comfortable. It feels more like driving a car to be honest
Hi, where are you based please approx. And do you have any contact details. Cheers
If this is the same as my Vauxhall Vivaro, the cruise will work you just wont see anything on the dash. Which us exactly the same as using a third party cruise control. Its easy to live without the dash information.
Thanks for watching
Well done mark
Thank you John
So its just the same as a rock & roll bed...👍👍, a great job too...
Pretty much but length ways. Thanks for watching
@@Markscampers no problem at all but sorry if my comment sounded a bit abrupt… I should’ve said something like it’s very similar to a rock ‘n’ roll bed, but I’m sure you know what I meant…🤙🤙

@@thenoworriesnomad Yeah, no worries
Looks like the wood is made from ice cream sticks ,if you stare to hard it may break
Lolly sticks would have been cheaper lol
looks uncomfortable both couch and bed
As a first attempt it's nice, all you have to do is some minor improvements and this could be a pretty nice bed!
It's really not
The only improvement I want to do is new covers for the foam as the ones I chose are more for outdoor seating that camper cushions
The panel to locate the cruise control button in the correct place isn’t too expensive from Renault. This will need coded on the clocks and ECM. Best way is to use DDT4ALL and OBDlink sx cable.
I went for mounting it on the right because I didn't want any blanks on my dash lol
hi did you manage to get cruise working and did you need to do anything else regards
I had to divert my attention to getting the van usable so left programming the cruise control but will get onto it soon and update you.
💩💩💩what a name 😂
Brilliant isn't it
What is the size of the window you ordered?
The ones I have are 900 x 500 but they do various sizes
You make it seem so simple Thank you
Thanks for watching
Just to follow up on my last post, I was on a good road and just started pressing buttons and the cruise control works without any programming, still no light on the dash for cc but at least it works, also I mounted the switch to the opposite side so a word of caution to anyone doing the same thing the switch plug has 5 wires but 2 of them are the same colour 'white with black stripe'. I have a replacement binnacle ordered to change from mph to kmh, it's from a '17 plate so hopefully it will have a cc light
Thanks for the comment
Good video. Trying to add cc to my vauxhall movano, got wheel and switch and same as your van all the wires and pedel switches are there but tried to get it coded and guy says cc is not on the module, did you have to add any fuses or relays?
No, not added any fuses or anything to mine
Does your split charge relay work with a smart alternator?
Yes it should work fine as it is sensing the output voltage. It would just stop the connection when the smart alternator clutch disengages
I found that the split charge relay doesn't work with Lithium batteries. The Lithiums sit at a high voltage with engine off and they then discharge into the starter battery! (Just a heads up for anyone considering else considering split charge and Lithium, get a dc-dc charger instead.)
Good tip thank you. Mine are AGM however my old van had lithium and didn't seem to have an issue with charging through a split charge relay. It did have quite a smart BMS so that could have helped
Well done Mark, I love your build style, just about to purchase a master myself.
Thanks John. Enjoy your build
Well blow me sideways, that idea sucks. I like it!
😆
Eco shit 😂 What a great name for a company
I'd be lying if I said the name wasn't part of the reason I decided to use this one lol
Did you get it working?
I had to divert my attention to getting the van usable so left programming the cruise control but will get onto it soon and update you.
Any tips on flashers going too fast after swapping over to led's Mark?
You don't have enough resistance. You need to either put a resistor in line or buy the led bulbs with them built in
Thanks Mark. Not enough current flowing with Leds. Ecu thinks a bulb has blown. Resistor acts as a controlled shortcircuit to allow more current to pass through the lamp circuit then?
Hi Mark great video where and how can we get it coded once we have done these steps pal
You need DDT4ALL and OBDlink SX cable. Needs to be activated in the clocks and ECM. There is tutorials on here showing it being done.
I had to divert my attention to getting the van usable so left programming the cruise control but will get onto it soon and update you.
Brill. Next mod for my master
Thanks for watching
Hello did you get it all working
I had to divert my attention to getting the van usable so left programming the cruise control but will get onto it soon and update you.
Looks good, my only worry is will the polystyrene crush down over time in areas of high footfall traffic? It's because of this reason that people batten the floor length ways and cross ways when doing the floor with pir board.
People batten their floor because Greg Virgoe did it many years ago, he even screwed them to the metal floor... If you install high load XPS, (strong enough to support concrete weight), you don't need battens.
@@charlevoix418 Thanks for that. It looks like the game has moved on a bit since I converted mine. Another rabbit hole to look into. Cheer's.
I decided not to batten the floor as i want the maximum height i can get inside the van. The polystyrene is very thin and im hoping screwing it down will crush it enough that it doesn't crush any further.
Just subscribed buddy. Looking to buy a van next year if I have the funds by then so watching lots of this stuff. Will be cool to see the van come along
