It looks like the internal Bar Antenna is eather turned off or has a broken connection inside of the TH-D74A. I have just done the same test with my TH-D74A and it works perfectly.

Thank god for this video, mine does the same, I thought it was broken when I bought it. The radio seems to work fine but it is annoying I might try and speak to Yaesu UK and see they will sort it also. Is it something that would have been like that from new or is it an age related issue? I bought mine 2nd hand.

How did you send this command via the serial port? With the serial programming cable and maybe putty?

Do you see a big receive / noise/ Strong signal rejection difference between your KX3 and the 890? Do you feel theirs much operating differences between to two?

do you think the waterfall detail is better on the KX3 or the 890?

Is there a CW encode and decode on this radio?

An update. My FTM-100 came today from Yaesu service. They fixed it! They exactly know what the problem is, and they know how to fixed that (three resistors replaced), but if your radio is out of warranty they will charge you $35 + shipping, in my case $60! In my personal opinion this is not fair! It is a well-known problem with this model, it is an engineering and design defect, but Yaesu does NOT care nor admit that.... Looks like this my last piece of equipment I purchased from Yaesu.

Thanks, was looking for the CW RX capabilities of the TH D74a. I still have my TH-F6a that I bought the week they were released and use the wide band receive a lot. I hear a bit of digital artifacts in this audio, but still workable.

Did you get a fix for this ? Yaesu UK tell me a modification has been isssued and a change can be made by them to resolve.

I have the same problem, it is coming though the speaker. Also hear if you plug in speakers or headphones. Although it does not get louder with the volume. Yaesu would not tell me if it’s a known problem just advised to send it in for repair at $70 per hour :/

I have a new D74, I am able to go to FM and DV, but NO DR mode. The tech guy at Kenwood is not able to tell me how, I also watched all of Don Arnold's videos, and he does not have a video telling how to switch to DR more. Basically I cannot go digital at all. UPDATE: I found this on the papa forum, but no volume in DR mode. “RESOLVED: The procedure shown on page 28 of the Hamvention Tips manual, AND on page 16-2 of the Kenwood larger new "Blue" user manual, fails to mention one CRITICAL fact; You *MUST* be in VFO mode, NOT memory mode with a selected memory channel, IN ORDER TO TOGGLE BETWEEN DV and DR MODES. YOU CAN NOT SELECT DR MODE if you had previously selected a memory channel. You MUST first hit the VFO key, before trying either of the procedures above shown on page 28 of the Hamvention Tips manual, and/or on page 16-2 of the Kenwood larger new "Blue" user manual. It fascinates me just how much basic usage information is missing from the Kenwood manuals, and from all the 3rd party blogs, articles, and presentations on this great but complicated radio. Much of the info is like a reference manual, but without the "Quick Start "cookbook" flowchart of what to do in each step. It could be SO MUCH easier if engineers knew how to communicate in writing (I am one, so I can say that :-) ). "Program No. 49" displayed on the radio is due to my having memory channels L49 and U49 set (for Program Scan), and the VFO happens to fall within that range.

I just received my D74A with ver 1.05 and I have this problem when I transmit to any repeater, I don't think it has been fixed.

Could it have been the orientation of the antenna inside each radio? Did you try rotating the D74A 90 degrees and did it make a difference? This is so typical...the old saying that they don't make 'em like they used to really pertains to modern amateur radio equipment. All of these new radios with all of these new digital modes seem to suck. I just found the TH-F6A on a "Black November" Blowout Sale for $210 each. I bought 2. Looks like I made a good purchase!
