Water We Thinking
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 26 ต.ค. 2020
We are Kevin and Colette, a couple living aboard a boat full time in Chicago. Living on a boat is a lot easier when you don't have to deal with winter, and the winters in Chicago are cold! Join us on a journey, even if it is a mostly stationary one, on discovering how to live full time in all sorts of weather.
Whether you want to know why we do this, or what it's like to live on a boat full time in a climate that isn't conducive to it, there is something for everyone. We've been blogging about our experience for years at www.waterwethinking.com but we know a picture says a thousand words, so we're moving to TH-cam to make a more enjoyable experience for our subscribers.
We love living aboard a boat, but it isn't always fun. Subscribe to the channel to learn about the good, the bad, and the ugly of full time boat life. Live aboard life isn't for everyone, but it's for us!

Don't Buy a Kohler Generator
Sure this generator is 34 years old but it has been maintained and the top end rebuilt. Yet, it still has more problems than Jay-Z. Check out this video to see why.

Living on a boat for nine years we finally decided to fully organize the kitchen pantry.
Back Deck Winter Refresh
มุมมอง 6002 ปีที่แล้ว
We've never really used the back deck much in winter. Colette decided we should change that based on our friends' usage of their back deck all year on their nearly identical Carver 4207.
Plastics!
มุมมอง 8382 ปีที่แล้ว
To help us keep warm in winter we wrap our windows in clear plastic. It helps add a thermal layer and also keep out the nasty winter winds. In this video Colette shows how we do it.
Teak Time Part 1
มุมมอง 7262 ปีที่แล้ว
After eight years of ownership it was time to redo the teak and prep for some changes on our aft deck. Check out how we refresh our weathered wood.
More Water Leaks and Ice Maker Fixes

Sometimes Boating is all bikinis and beers. But every charter is different. In this episode you see how different charters can be, even in a single day.
I am the Cleaner
มุมมอง 7002 ปีที่แล้ว
Boats require constant maintenance. Living aboard for eight years we've tried almost every product out there and have a few favorites. In this episode Kevin tries four different fiberglass cleaners and one not intended for boats to see what works best to clean streaks and bring back some shine to the fiberglass of Cygnet.
Dinghy Pumper

Live Aboard Slip Cost, West Coast Style
How often do you need to empty the grey water for two people?
We have 80 gallons total capacity so we can usually last about a month. For times when we are home more, like over Christmas vacation when we aren’t going to work we may need to empty as often as two weeks.
Is there anything I can do for that motor to make it have more power and faster
I’m not a hot rodder so I’m not sure. Sorry!
Hey are you two still living year round on the boat? Maybe this is a longshot, but would you ever be up for giving a tour of the living situation and marina set up in person? As a basically lifelong boater, I am really interested in exploring the liveaboard life. I live in Pilsen, so it would be convenient for me. Cheers!
Good video man
Hi there, any chance you will share the part number for the thermostat you found??
We had an onan on our Gibson and I couldn't get gaskets quick enough so I "temporarily" made them out of a cereal box. They were still holding 2 years later when I sold the boat
At 2 min in it kinda felt like “House” was explaining my outboard to me haha great video
😂 loving the lingo 😂
So I have looked everywhere for fresh content or a up date about where are you now but it’s not clear whether this channel is still running or not?? Wish you both all the best ❤
So sorry we haven't posted in a while, like over a year! Many reasons why - but we do plan to get back to the channel in the future but it has been difficult to reboot. We're good and still living on Cygnet happily! Thanks for watching.
They were paper gaskets. Next time (hope there isn't one but....) a paper grocery sack can be used, you can buy gasket material and make your own....waiting two months.... Wow.
I have gasket material, but I like things to be put together with stock parts. I’ve never had great luck making gaskets that don’t leak.
Was that first lock Brandon Rd?
You got it.
@@CaptainKevWright we use to cross that bridge all the time when we were hauling fertilizer. That bridge was always broken lol Cool seeing it from on the water. Found your channel yesterday and really enjoying the videos.
@@johnrossi6212so glad you enjoy it! We haven’t posted a new video in quite a while and I apologize for that but if you just found it, you’ve got plenty to watch. We will eventually get back to posting new videos, but are taking a little break from it.
Does the river ever freeze up? Wondering what that would do to the boat.
The river freezes but only in bitter cold. The marina water freezes too, but there are bubblers under each slip that keep the water moving and it doesn’t freeze in the slips. Apparently fiberglass boats can flex and lift up a bit when there’s ice so they aren’t as likely to be damaged as aluminum. But we’d prefer not to test that theory!
Poor preventative maintenance practices and lack of knowledge. Any auto parts store has rolls of gasket material to make your own replacement gaskets. All else fails red rtv does it all.
I agree with the lack of maintenance. Way too much rust inside those hoses. Maybe not you but some owner in the past.
I have an evinrude 70, trying to get the motor unlocked. Any tips?
Could be a few things, you can’t turn the motor with a large wrench on the flywheel?
Pretty cool how y’all deface government property with your stickers 😡
Have you seen one of our stickers on government property? Please provide an example. I'm not saying it isn't possible, just curious what property you are referencing.
By the way he lives in Chicago now because he was a sneak aboard don't believe anyone saying its easy to get a live aboard!
You didn't tell everybody about The three year waiting list.Guess what as soon as you buy the boat you have to move it out of the slip😮 And that's pretty much all of CA.😢
😂😂 about 2,500 in marina del rey ...yeah right...that would be the cost to live in a freezer in apple valley
Maybe buy a new boat with a new generator
Ha Ha! I would love to, can I borrow $2.5M for a new Silent Yachts catamaran?
Good Showing I enjoyed immensely 👌 from Columbus Ohio
I have all the manuals on this. I can email them to you. I am fixing mine now.
Thanks, I have what I need for this motor and it has been running as it should for a while now.
Big Block Chevys run best around 160-180 , I know in my boat they’re 140 thermostats though .
Doesn't the river freeze?
Yes the river can freeze, in fact it froze for a little over a week this January 2024. But we have bubblers underneath our slips that keep the water in motion and don’t allow the boats to freeze in the slips.
Elon is coming out with a line of turbo diesel vehicles for 2027. Also, he is buying TH-cam.
Hi nice video. Not a nice feeling running low on fuel. I've learnt that lesson. I wish you slowed down the removal of the carbs as it is a job I have to do. I'm worried Ill put the links back and the boat will run rough. Can you do a video showing the carb removal and repairs. Thanks all the way from Australia
Thanks! I’ve got the boat in storage for a while so no new videos coming soon but I do need to do more work this spring or summer and hopefully I can give you a better look at the carbs.
Can't see shit lol
There are “Boat Library” on Lake Erie in Ohio
I just bought a 75 model 70 horse. ... Havnt tried it yet
Hi I want to get the carbs off. Do the links to the carbs just pull off. Thanks
All those fluids are going some place.
Yes it is
Why didn’t you put the mast back up? After I hit the Mississippi I’d got it up.
You’re on the Tenn-Tom Waterway. Get ready for the locks.
Did the owners of this boat not have it inspected before buying it? This thing needs a complete refit in machanical.
Where are you guys?
Chicago
I know that silly. I meant why no videos, last one - 5 months ago.
@@pugmahone probably single
Did no one tell you about the water front commission, they allow only a certain number of live aboards per each marina for environmental reasons and the wait list for a live aboard slip is years long. I live on my 30’ Ericson in Berkeley, in California slip fees average about $10 a foot without live aboard , that adds another $200 per month. 🤙🤙🤙🐮☮️
Bought a 36 islander Ventura Harbor has the same issues.Just lie and get views 😮😮😮😮
This makes me feel so good that these million dollars yaughts are just as F'd up as the lil ones
Living a bill ord in CA Spain…,
Would have wanted to see where you tapped into the engine
I use star bright black streak remover
I'm looking to liveaboard in a Chicago houseboat too. Where is the name of the marina that allows you to stay there all 4 seasons??
River City but it’s very hard to get a slip for the winter. Summer is open
Just buy the tool for a few bucks to pump in new gear oil makes it a lot easier. Anyway i have the 88 70 hp Evinrude version pf this motor. Runs pretty good. Ran some seafoam through it and that seemed to help it run a bit smoother. Still has a rough idle so may need to do a carb cleaning. Went it runs though it is very smooth and pushes my little bumble pretty good.
Are you sure it's 50% more? On Marina Del Rey's website it says: "Liveaboard fees are 50% of the basic slip rate." So then is that a lie? If not that would mean he has a huuge boat
Your running on only 2 cylinders most likely the cracked coil is probably misfiring and your loosing 1/3rd of your gas down a dead cylinder.
You can buy a pump and hose and pump that gear oil in no time.
Is their a certain gear oil to be used on this motor?
Johnson recommends their HPF but any brand name 80/90 lower unit gear oil should be ok.
Great tour And Boat ! Good that you shot some 'before' photos for comparison. In the galley, if I'm correct, is that a photo of the Southern California mountains? Tells you where I'm from !
You probably need to replace the lower unit since the skeg is missing which could counteract the torque of the propeller trying to flip you to port.
I guess that is a good idea, I'll be scouring ebay for one I suppose.
A place like that I would never do business with again. You didn’t take it there for him to tell you it’s not worth fixing if someone wants something fixed then they want it fixed. For him to say he won’t work on it because it’s not worth it is poor business. If someone is going to pay the money to fix it said it’s none of your business whether it’s worth it or not as a business owner
You 2 are so waisted making this video 😊you aren't even kidding anybody
