    I've gone with Halfords Cord EV, based on good reviews on Trustpilot. Sadly I'm still waiting for the installation, having been let down by their on-site survey and installation process, which has been a fiasco. The surveyor knew nothing about the product or what was needed and just took pics, which I could have done myself and saved £80. The first installer then contacted me for missing info, before I was charged an extra £120 for the "complicated" installation (the charger will be less than 10m from the consumer unit and they only need to drill through 2 walls, so not sure why it's so complicated). They then told me I would have to wait another 4 weeks for the installation, making the process >6 weeks when the Cord EV website says it usually takes 2 weeks. I said I wasn't happy waiting this long so they found another installer but they have just contacted me with more questions....it seems they are not talking to each other. 😡 With hindsight I guess I should have avoided anything associated with Halfords, and gone with my original idea to buy a charger online then get a local qualified sparky to fit it. Live and learn!

    It's also worth considering vehicle to grid (bidirectional) charging if you do get an EV. It allows you to use the EV battery as the house battery, charging overnight on the cheapest rates and then using the 'spare' charge in the car to fill demands during the peak rates. There are compromises (clearly getting a car solely as a house battery isn't economically sensible) but it's a flexible option if your car usage suits the pattern.

    Hi, I am a young 70 year old with electrical/electronics background. I have 10 south facing Solar panels, a battery and a city type EV. Heating is by condensing boiler with low flow temp and a wood-burner! (I get a free log supply) I also have the obligatory air fryer haha! I love watching your presentations on my iPad! And playing around with my system settings to minimise peak rate usage. I am on the brilliant Octopus intelligent go tariff with Outgoing fixed and like you my monthly energy consumption is quite variable. I contacted Octopus and changed to monthly Variable Direct Debit. My winter bills are high, around £100 per month but in mid summer go down to almost zero! I can cope without the winter fuel allowance that has now been stopped! Great analysis, thank you. I wonder if you could do an update using current prices of electricity and batteries, and perhaps address what the possible future price levels are when batteries will start to make sense for smaller households? My house uses minimal amounts of electricity (just infrared heating a few minutes daily and cold showers) and no gas, so I think battery prices will have to fall by a huge amount before it makes sense for households like mine? I am on Agile and the bill is upto £20 a month. Maybe I should revisit this subject in 2 years?

    • @UpsideDownFork
      @UpsideDownFork 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello, I am planning to do just this. Unfortunately/fortunately for low consumption households, the generally lower rates than a couple of years ago do not lend themselves to battery storage very well at the moment. The prices of batteries themselves is falling but very, very slowly in most cases. The prices at source (China) have almost halved in 18 months but in the UK we see a reduction of 10-20% if we're lucky. Time will tell if this will trickle through for us.

      +1 for the need for wireless CT, just seems to rule out a lot of installs where the consumer unit is remote from the charger. A nice video and as others have said a spark who seems to know his stuff. Thanks for the content

      @@yellownev there are now single armoured cables that contain both power and data cables necessary for a charge point installation so an electrician only needs run one cable from the consumer unit to the charge point. Search for SOTA electrical on TH-cam if you would like to see this cable in action.

      @@UpsideDownForkthanks for the reply and a good point. I watch artisan electrics and they use Doncaster cables. I’ve a Zappi that uses the Harvi’s they work but I’d always prefer a hard wired ct connection. My batteries are remote from the charger which is remote from the consumer unit, shame I wasn’t offered ( if it was even available ) the new Swa cables with data included. You probably will want to turn the solar charging off if you’re going to IOG. Charge your EV overnight on the cheap rate and let all the solar get exported at 15p Looks a nice charger

    Looks like a nice box, I thought it was only agile compatible, didn't know it could do intelligent also. It'd be nice if it went purple / pink when octopus was controlling it, maybe one colour once charge timer set, then the other when actually charging.

      @@UpsideDownFork You are using 10% dymethybenzyl ammonia dichloride, the swimming pool chemical is 15% Sodium Hypoclorite that is used by many professionals to do the job. I would suggest that brushing it on is less of a health issue than spraying. W&F is £35 for 5 litres, the other is £40 for 20 litres. It's a no brainer as safe as your product and a fraction of the price. Try it and do another video

    Seems like a goods charger, with what seems to also have built in PEN Fault detection, but why this over say a Hypervolt Home 3?, price is also better on this! also props to the engineer! seems knowledgeable in this field and attention to detail for the install was good. You should put his details on here too.

      This charge point was installed by www.echargeinstall.co.uk/ The hypervolt is more expensive and larger. I guess it depends what you want from your charge point.

    I've had this model for 16 months and can confirm it's amazing 👍. I valued the fact it didn't need a sim card to communicate as the end user could potentially have to foot the bill for that one day if t&c's change! Best not to press bump charge and wait for octopus to start it as that could cancel the 7p rate..they usually just crack on with it within a minute or so anyway. Until the bi directional chargers come along this is the best on the market in my humble opinion :) 👌

    The best bit of advice in this video is to make sure the connectors on the cable are covered when not in use. They can rust and also short out if they get wet. Loads of people don't realise this... I'm a MyEnergi fan personally as its all Uk designed and made, but it will be interesting to see what their V2G/H options look like - hopefully in 2025!!!

      I've installed mine inside my garage close to the door and run the cable under the garage door when I'm charging - no problem with exposure to the elements or vandalism. I've read that in hot countries (Australia for example), chargers in direct sunlight can overheat and reduce charging speed....

      When I used the holster for my connector, a bee found it pretty much immediately and filled the "hollow" tubes with wax and pollen. I didn't know what it was at the time - I assumed the installer had dropped it in some gunk or something - so I cleared it out and when my car arrived 3 weeks later found it completely full again! I had to buy one of those rubber caps and not use the holster.

      Thanks for raising this. Sorry if I wasn't explicit enough about it when I said that Wallbox sent me the item. There is a box that we tick when uploading the video so you should have seen a little pop up box in the top left hand corner telling you that this contains some form of paid promotion. Yes, Wallbox sent me this unit for free but they did not pay me any cash to say anything, they gave no suggestions, direction or have any editorial control. They know that I plan to personally test several charge points over the coming year or two to form an opinion on the best charge point based on my real world home testing. So far they are in the lead of my small sample of 3.
