Program Notes
While studying in Japan, I attended a Pro Musica Nipponia concert. This ensemble, founded by Minoru Miki, unites traditional Japanese instruments with contemporary music and one of the first pieces on their concert was a koto ensemble. This was the first time I had ever heard this instrument live and when I listened, I imagined that music being played on marimba. When I later met Minoru Miki to talk about his marimba compositions, I also asked him about his works for koto and my interest in arranging them for the marimba. He graciously approved and suggested his Ballades for Koto Solo compositions.
I then met with Akemi Yamada, the principal koto player with Pro Musica Nipponia. Ms. Yamada has recorded all four volumes of Miki's Ballades and was very willing to help me understand more about koto. She demonstrated various movements of these works and explained the intricate markings and notations of koto music as well as the different playing techniques for the koto. Through this demonstration and my own experimentations on the marimba, I have tried to emulate the bends and slides of the koto through different playing areas and grace notes on the marimba.
The various glisses, grace notes and embellishments are meant to emulate the unique sounds created in the original koto works. Miki has heard my koto arrangements and has given his approval for their publication and performance.

"Berserker" is an aggressive and heavy work written for advanced solo marimba and accompanied by a supporting ensemble of 5 percussionists. While not directly programmatic, the atmosphere, title, and challenge to the soloist are reflective of Japanese artist Kentaro Miura’s critically acclaimed graphic manga series "Berserk." Berserker was commissioned by Mineola High School in Mineola, TX for ...

    Nice! I use a recorded track for younger snare drum students and it really works well. The monotony of playing to a tick is alleviated through the use of a song track. So much more intersting for the student and teacher alike. Thanks for sharing.

    Brian- Do you teach left hand lead for all scales? I have always done that but I see some people teaching the opposite. It just makes more sense to start with the left hand as you proceed up the keyboard with no crossing. Also, nice idea with the play-along tracks. I think this gives students a nice track to play with and this also serves as a metronome for tempo control. Keep up the good, work. I just discovered your channel and now I'm a fan or at least a follower or subscriber. I love the Texas A & M military style and those old school drums are the best. Thanks for sharing your talents. Would love to teach in Texas. I'm a retired band director and I teach private lessons and also teach sectionals in the schools. I may have to check out your book for my students.

      I teach LH lead for ascending scales b/c they lead right into Green, intervals and arpeggios. I then have them play RH lead for the descending patterns.

    I want to say this is an amazing piece performed very well by Dr. Zator and the students in this video. It was an honor for me as the Mineola HS drum captain to premiere this piece with the other students at Mineola and I miss music a lot. Even though I am not in the music career path anymore and I am in the Army now, I still continue to exercise my love for the percussion world. Awesome piece!

    That's an interesting version of Verano Porteño! Sounds more like Sammut's Variations on Porgy and Bess. Who knew Sammut could rip off of Pius like that! 😬

      @brianzator 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! Well, b/c it IS Sammut's Porgy and Bess variation - my bad on putting on the wrong title of the video. Sarah had played Verano the year prior to this and I just messed up. Ha! Good catch Sophia!

    Wonderful performance! I actually performed this piece in April 2016 with my professor, Dr. Pennington, at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD. And although your performance was not technically the U.S. premiere, you provided a more polished, better recorded performance than we did on limited rehearsal time. Thanks for sharing-I stumbled upon Mashima's work almost by accident, and I'm absolutely thrilled his music is making its way to the U.S.!
