I can't imagine life below ground as a miner, yet I should be able to! I can recall one of our field trips either when older or in school or college where we went below ground at an Age croft or a proximity mine. We were told all about the processes and air pressure etc and how coal was brought to the surface and the relevance of the Bridge Water Canal. I wish I could remember more, I just recall the drop of the cage descending into the mine and the heat once below ground. It's hard to believe such field trips were ever permitted in recent years given safety regs.

We've lost tour clean streets and alleys ways and now see strewn rubbish and weeds, there are no clean doorsteps and small shops no longer take a pride in their frontage being scrubbed and pristine at the end of each day, standards have definitely slipped in our inner towns. People were put into service at age 14 years - perhaps our society nowadays has become too complacent.
