Summary of Revenge of the Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell | 55 minutes audiobook summary
Twenty-five years after the publication of his groundbreaking first book, Malcolm Gladwell returns with a brand-new volume that reframes the lessons of The Tipping Point in a startling and revealing light.
Through a series of riveting stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering. He takes us to the streets of Los Angeles to meet the world’s most successful bank robbers, rediscovers a forgotten television show from the 1970s that changed the world, visits the site of a historic experiment on a tiny cul-de-sac in northern California, and offers an alternate history of two of the biggest epidemics of our day: COVID and the opioid crisis. Revenge of the Tipping Point is Gladwell’s most personal book yet. With his characteristic mix of storytelling and social science, he offers a guide to making sense of the contagions of modern world. It’s time we took tipping points seriously.

Almost everything in this video is true NVC, but when "I feel hurt" was used as an example of NVC, that was in fact an example of (quasi-)violent communication and not a fully-relatable feeling at 24:09. Saying "I feel hurt" implies someone else hurt you (in this case, the wife "feels" hurt by husband), which is the equivalent of saying "you made me feel hurt" - do you see this? Isn't it violent to blame people for your own feelings? It's not like someone attacked you physically. The blame game is "a tragic expression of unmet needs", as Rosenberg says. It only makes things worse. It's unconscious manipulation used to convince someone else to feel guilty and apologise to the hurt ego... which often doesn't solve the conflict, only alleviating it temporarily. As Rosenberg said, we never do things without choosing to do them. And so someone who "feels hurt" chooses to identify with that hurt ego state. But what they actually feel is a mystery utill they tell you. Hurt is an indescribed feeling that implies an external cause, while in reality it's caused by an unmet need. In NVC we shouldn't feel guilty for doing something wrong, or in this case hurting someone by saying something. We should be sorry for doing something that caused us to feel bad because we didn't fulfil our need, for example the need to respect others, and then admit it. Why? Because nothing we do out of needs is wrong. We do things to fulfil our needs, not do things to be evil. The only thing that can be wrong is something we don't have the right to do (theft, assault, fraud), but not something we *do* have the right to say (anything, as long as it's not a lie). So we should rather understand why we're apologising in the first place - because we regret having treated someone as we did, not because we did something wrong to them. If this makes any sense. Note: if you tell someone they shouldn't say "I feel hurt", they will paradoxically "feel more hurt". Please don't say that in conflicts. Ask them what they mean by feeling hurt and ask them about the need that wasn't met. The human ego is unstable. I'd say we should learn to disconnect feelings from thoughts and thoughts from feelings. To feel without thinking. That would save us unnecessary suffering.

Master Afle - - I desperately need your help...!! I need you to do a video series on how to start over in life. I grew up super poor, with parents who had no idea what they were doing in life, and we didn't live close to any family that could help me learn how to be successful in life. I went to a super small school that did not teach this kind of thing so I didn't get there and because I didn't know what questions I should be asking, I didn't know what I was missing. I wanted so badly to be successful but I didn't even know where to start - I didn't even know how to organize my life in such a way so as to set myself up for success, let alone, how to then design my life. Subsequently, I have gone through life just floundering - always dreaming of being someone someday as well as the dream of one day being successful; yet, I still find myself not knowing where to start or what to do. I am now 49yrs old, never been married, and I just lost my job at the beginning of December 2024 and I'm at my whits end. I'm choosing to look at this as an opportunity to start over again and hopefully create that life for myself that I've always dreamed of but I kid you not... I feel like I need someone to literally start with square one as though I were back in my childhood and someone were teaching me the things I need to know to eventually become a successful adult. I need help with discovery questions so I know what I need to be lookin at in my life and thinking about as well as working on. I also need someone to walk me through how to set good habits, good goals, and how to put processes and systems in place to make sure I'm accomplishing it all. And then I need someone to help me figure out a game plan to bring it all together and truly set myself up for success and make it work. There's sooo many 15 minute videos out there on this topic but they all just seem to ramble and I have yet to find a video, let alone, a series, let alone, a speaker that's been helpful in actually giving me questions to consider and action steps to take. I need someone to start with the baby steps at square one and walk me through it like a life coach would... I think you're the one who could truly make that happen. (I can't afford a life coach and I can't afford to take the Design Your Life classes at Stanford... I need something on TH-cam or at least, something within my currently super small income pretty please!!). HELP!! *** Or find a book that does this and walk us through it. LOL! THANKS!! ***
