Vairagya Panchakam || Swami Vedanta Desikan
Vairagya Panchakam in five verses is the shortest among Vedanta Desika's works. It is a series of verses composed by Swami Vedanta Desikan in reply to a invite Sringeri Jagadguru Sri Vidyaranya swamigal. Desika lived a simple and austere life, and this work reveals his vairagya.
While Swamy Desikan was in Kanchipuram, his childhood friend Vidhyaranaya, who was a royal guru at the Vijayanagara court and later became the head of the Sringeri Peetham, wrote to invite him to a prestigious position there. Vidhyaranaya wanted to help his friend out of poverty, but Swamy Desikan responded with a verse expressing his disinterest in worldly wealth. Despite Vidhyaranaya’s insistence through a second letter, Swamy Desikan firmly rejected the offer and composed five additional verses, forming the "Vairagya Panchakam," to elaborate on his refusal. In these verses, he criticized the practice of flattering the wealthy and begging for alms, declaring his sole devotion to Lord Varadarajan as his true wealth.
In Swamy Desikan's "Vairagya Panchakam," the metres used are distinct for each verse. Below given is the description of each verse's meaning.
First Verse: "Kshoni kona shatamsha---" - Saardhula vikreetitham meter.
Kings who rule over parts of the world become very proud, and some people praise them and think they are blessed. However, we believe that serving the merciful God will fulfill all our needs, just as sage Kuchela gained wealth by meeting the Lord with only a handful of rice.
Second Verse: "Silamkimanalam --" - Prutvee meter.
Even educated scholars ask kings for food, but isn’t the grain left after harvest enough to meet their needs? Isn’t a small amount of water enough to quench thirst? Isn’t a simple piece of cloth enough for clothing?
Third Verse: "Jwalathu jaladhi--" - Harinee meter.
Even if I am extremely hungry, like a fire burning in the ocean, I won’t ask the king for anything. My words, which are as fragrant as evening jasmine flowers, are reserved for praising our great Lord.
Fourth Verse: "Dhureeswara dhwara bhair---" - Vamsastam meter.
With the divine wealth I have from serving the Lord who stood before Arjuna in battle, why should I beg kings for temporary riches? I prefer not to be at their gates asking for what is fleeting and perishable.
Fifth Verse: "Shareera pathanavadhi--" - Prutvee meter.
Wealth gained by serving the rich until one’s body is exhausted might satisfy hunger but brings sorrow. True wealth is that which made Arjuna great, allowed lifting of Govardhana, and brings joy to the mind. That’s the real wealth to seek.
Sixth Verse: "Naasthy pithrarjitham--" - Anushtup meter.
I don’t have inherited or earned wealth, but Brahma, the creator, has given me the wealth of my Lord who resides on top of the Hasthi mountain (Lord Varadaraja of Kanchipuram).
