Florida Coast Flying - Light Sport Pilot Adventures 018(4K) - N234YP- TL Sting S3
At the end of a trip to Deland Florida to visit family, we had a free day to explore the area a little bit on the way back. Even though the weather was not the best for flying, we decided to take a trip south down the coast to Titusville, then back up to St. Augustine.
Florida is known for quickly changing and sometimes volatile weather, and this day was no exception. Rain and Storms came in from west to east over Florida that day, and cut off our flightpath back to St. Augustine for 2 hours. It is the nature of VFR flying. But, the storms offered some beautiful flying, great aerial shots, and scenic views of the Florida Coast.

    When flying VFR, what would happen if you accidentally fly through one of the clouds?

    • @lightsportpilotadventures
      @lightsportpilotadventures 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi. Thanks for the comment. So there are a lot of rules pertaining to clouds and VFR flying. Cloud clearances and distances you should maintain to be legal and safe. In the day time you can usually see how close you are and avoid flying in to them. If the clouds are light and do not obscure your ability to see past 3 miles or see the ground or the blue sky then you are still legal VFR as long as your are maintaining legal distances from clouds that are opaque and obscure visibility through them. If you end up flying in to a cloud, don't panic, but don't trust your feelings or senses, since you can not see or "feel" up and down. You CAN see your HSI, artificial horizon, and secondary instruments, like altimeter and heading. Use and trust your instruments. Use the instruments to keep the plane in controlled and level flight, and then turn around 180 heading and fly out back the way you came. That is what we are trained. Ultimately stuff can happen so pilots have an emergency rule that says a pilot can do whatever is needed to do keep safe and stay alive, even if you have to break other rules to do that. VFR Pilots accidentally fly in to clouds or are forced in to clouds all the time. Follow your training. There are no "airplane police" up there if you do accidentally fly in to IMC.... so ultimately think ahead, be mindful of what "could happen" and plan for contingencies, fly safe, be courteous to other pilots, and follow rules. Hopefully that is what you are asking?

    • @lightsportpilotadventures
      @lightsportpilotadventures 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      BTW the cameras, sun angle and other factors like color correction make the clouds look more opaque and closer than they really are in my videos. I generally try to follow the legal vfr rules. i can always see the ground when flying through scattered clouds. I also have some personal minimums I follow to keep safe for me. Everyone is different in this regard.

      Early in my private pilot training, my CFI was a US Navy doctor and did not suffer fools - I asked him: How can you tell 2000 feet to the left or right of a cloud (thinking there was a trick, like putting your fist on the glare shield or something)? He snapped, "JUST STAY CLEAR OF THE F**KING CLOUDS!!!" I couldn't help but laugh... So when flying VFR, stay the f**k away from clouds... there's no "accidentally". He had some memorable lines.

      @lightsportpilotadventures 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Richard. I am going to do a video on our plane, since there is a lot of interest about in the comments. I have been planning it for a while. It will be coming in the spring just after annual is completed on it. Our plane N234YP is a 2009 Model TL Sting S3. It is all carbon fiber construction, and solid and reliable, and has the Rotax 912 ULS 100 HP Engine, which has also been super reliable. I have put around 500 hours on this plane since we have owned it a little over 2 years. I can definitely testify that TL makes very well designed and solid airplanes, and are well supported, even the models that are out of production like mine. There is a newer model of our plane called the Sting S4 which came out in 2014 and is still the current version. It is very similar to ours, the changes being to the canopy, rudder, and main landing gear. It is made in the Czech Republic. Parts are easy to get. There is a US dealer, TL Sport Aircraft: Trey Murdaugh runs that operation and they are great as well. Also Sport Air, in Little Rock Arkansas, the previous US dealer, also very knowledgeable with TL Products and supports these airplanes, and has a good stash of parts too! I can't recommend TL enough. Great company, great airplanes. Ours has some older but nice avionics. It seems that every Sting has different or customized avionics. I chose ours partially because the avionics package is nice, works great, and the autopilot is very easy and works perfectly. All good ideas. I mentally process these kinds of suggestions and incorporate the ideas as we are shooting and producing future ones. I think our little youtube videos are getting better and better. Certainly the newer ones are better than the older ones. Thanks for the suggestions!

    My current ride is a RANS S-19 but I had rented a Sling years ago when visiting Grandma in Torance CA. Nice airplane. Between 2017 and 2022 a group of 12 of us in 5 airplanes made Coast 2 Coast trips out west from St Augustine FL. Great adventures. Half the pilots were from Italy. Dinners were great.

      Coast to Coast with 5 planes sounds like an awesome adventure! Call me next time! Would love to be part of that kind of trip. We are still meeting people as we fly, and enjoying every minute of it. We were in St. Augustine a few weeks ago with N234YP, Arthur Dunn (X21), and Deland, Fl visiting my uncle. That video will be coming up. Too much editing to do! HAHA. Did you rent a "Sting", or a "Sling"? Both are great airplanes, and similar in ways. Your RANS S-19 looks very similar to my Sting S3. Nice airplane.

      Hi Scott...wow, such a small world! It was cool to see him flying below us around Pensacola Beach. Let your friend know he's got a cameo in our TH-cam video! HAHA. We live in Nashville, but we are in Milton a lot. I basically grew up in that area. Graduate of Milton High School back in the day! I just subscribed to your channel! I would love to see your Zeniths in person. Thanks for letting me know.

      Hi, we love our Sting S3, it is a really well made and designed airplane! It is a 2009 Model Sting S3, 912ULS and has 1430 hours on engine and airframe now. I think I am the 4th or 5th owner. The past two owners I know had TH-cam Channels. If you go to my channel and click on the "Playlists" section, you will find a few videos from both Jason and Larry. You can click on their respective channels and watch more videos with N234YP. The Stings are a great platform to make videos from since the canopy has such a great view. Let me know if I can help in your quest for a Sting. Thanks for the positive comment - Rob Previous Owners Sample Videos: th-cam.com/video/7YOrlrPGsbw/w-d-xo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB

    love the editing. What i see in my videos, is if I get to the story / quest statement in the 1st 30 seconds I hold the audience a little better. I was running and intro too but cut it to get to what, where, why and how quicker. You do a good job of moving the camera every 5-15 seconds to hold a the viewer.

      It is always a challenge to find time to edit for me. Appreciate the positive comments. I like to edit in a way that if you watch without sound, that it is still interesting to watch. Getting clean audio on the GoPro's in my plane has taken some trial and error, but I think I have found good system. I think the audio sounds pretty good in this video. I have just subscribed to your channel. I will check it out!

Maybe we can meet up for lunch, or even better, do some formation flying and get video of each others plane in the air. That would be cool. SportCruisers are very similar to our Sting. Why did you fly backwards to shorten the eclipse?

    • @lightsportpilotadventures
      @lightsportpilotadventures 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We decided to reverse course because the sun was not visible. It was behind us. We wanted to see the sun. We say that at 17:41. Glad we did, it was awesome to see. Thanks for watching and for commenting!

    • @bradtem
      @bradtem 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lightsportpilotadventures Seeing the sun is a pretty good excuse! While a LSA isn't that fast, jet based eclipse flights can increase duration a fair bit and will pick a vector that still allows seeing the sun and is as close to the travel vector as possible -- and also trying to bank when the eclipse is at high altitude. Of course, some of them also give up this and reverse course to give a view to those on both sides of the aircraft. There are eclipse timing phone apps that can handle flight plans to make their predictions. Few have a transparent roof as you do.

    • @lightsportpilotadventures
      @lightsportpilotadventures 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @bradtem yes, jets are faster but our canopy is 360 degrees completely open sky. I actually slowed down as much as possible to get it to last longer. Maybe saved a few seconds either ways haha. But, you are correct we did loose a few seconds by heading it to. : )
