    one question which always came in my mind is - How can an individual play an important or outstanding role in making his company a top player in market lets say an engineering construction company.. what are contributions which can lead to faster growth of company from an employees perspective who wish to skyrocket his own career path also in the journey.. which books would be essential around this topic...

    • @Harvey_Emerson
      @Harvey_Emerson วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Mohib, thanks for your comment! This is an interesting one… I think it greatly depends on the seniority of the position and the size of the organisation. You are likely to have a more significant contribution to business growth if you’re closer to the executive board (and therefore given more responsibility and autonomy) within a small business (where your impact will be more visible/more notable). It’s not to say that you can’t make an impact/grow the business significantly within a junior position and/or a large company, but it’s certainly easier with the above! At least to have your work seen… I also think a big part of it is showing yourself as an innovator, by maybe talking about achievements that make you stand out from others, relating to how you grew revenue, customer base, a team etc. if you can show that you would follow a job specification, but also add your own unique contributions, that’s going to make you stand out as a solid candidate. This is especially prominent in engineering, like you mention! If you have more experience and a deep knowledge of the market and how competition is operating then that’s something to show off. I don’t know too many specific books on this from an employee perspective as most of them (from my research) are targeted towards business owners, such as “Built to Grow” (Royston Guest). But yes this is a great discussion point. Are you interviewing at the moment? 🙌

    Had a interview a week ago. It was an online interview & 3 people interviewed me. It was allotted to be 1 hour, and it ran for 1 hour. I think it was rushed towards the end, but they gave me plenty of time for questions and answered them with details. The hiring manager where the position will be working with gave me a tour of the lab via a PPT and showed me photos of the lab team that I'd work with in the company. All of them gave positive feedback throughout the interview. One of them was interested in the research I've done in undergrad, while the other two managers gave me positive feedback throughout the interview process. Questions weren't too technical, but they were more related to my personal value and who I am besides my experiences. The hiring manager also told me timelines in fair detail & planned to contact my references this week. Are these positive signs?

    • @Harvey_Emerson
      @Harvey_Emerson 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey! Thanks so much for your comment and congrats for absolutely smashing your interview (by the sound of it!!). Everything you have listed there sounds VERY promising. Whilst of course there are no guarantees, I particularly picked out the parts where they showed you the team and mentioned your referees. Unless they collect references for all candidates, it is an administrative task that the employer wouldn’t typically complete without interest in your application. Even if it is unsuccessful in the end, you should be very pleased with the process considering it sounds so good. Interviews can be very daunting and getting practice is always beneficial. Regarding the timeframe, I wouldn’t be to concerned as to not hearing, as there can be lots of reasons why they haven’t got back. If you have time, feel free to check out my video on following up after an interview, as this explores those reasons. Just keep positive and your options open! Sorry for such a massive reply, but hope you get some good news!! Even if not, one door closes and another opens 🙌 Best of luck, would love to know how you get on 🤞

    I had an interview for a technical preparation job for production about a year ago, technical education(Engineering) is an advantage, paying minimum wage, that's about 500€ a month after taxes. All smiles and everything from people, asking me when I'm ready to start, I seem like a perfect fit, so on. I learnt from a friend working there that a person with no experience or education related to the job(regular high school instead of vocational school+trade) got the job instead of me. I applied to a Technology Technician job this April, had 3 rounds of interviews(2 on Teams, 1 onsite), first meeting in May with 3 people, second Teams meeting in early June had management and actual shift leads in as well, a week later on the onsite interview it was the same people, asked how much I've been thinking about, told them a number, I got brought on a tour around the place, promised an answer in a week, 2 weeks passed and I figured I didn't get the job, the next Monday I get a call saying that the people that inverviewed me were doing interviews for multiple positions due to people from other departments being on holiday and they'll send me an offer in a day or two. I get the offer, straight up 10% more money than what I asked for... I'm starting on the 15th.

      @Harvey_Emerson 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi there, thanks for your comment and great question! I don’t think it is, but there is definitely a line. Following up once or twice, especially if you have invested a significant amount of time in the process, is understandable if you haven’t heard for a long time. It can show as well that you’re invested and keen to develop professionally if you are seeking feedback - an attractive trait for a prospective employer. I do think there are levels to this, however. Spamming them many times for an answer may irritate the employer as, in most cases, they will have a valid reason for not updating you yet (as mentioned in the vid). It may also get them to question your motivations for wanting to join. There is definitely merit to following up, just not over doing it! I hope this helps!

    I had an interview where I couldn't read how it went. Two people interviewed me. One was raving about my experience and resume and how impressive it was. He was excited to engage with me. The other gave nothing, seemed a bit stern and very business-like. Nothing I said or did seemed to impress him. He was hard to read. Ended up not getting the job, as it turns out the stern guy is the superior manager, and the friendly guy was an offsider.

    My 3rd round was on the 19th last week. I was told from the Director and the Senior Dev that I'd hear back with a decision "Early next week". As we are approaching mid-week (the 26th) I have been thinking about drafting a follow-up email or call tomorrow morning. What does anyone think the best action would be? Stay silent? Follow-up email first thing in the morning? Give the Corporate Recruiter a follow-up call? Thanks for any advice ~~

      Hi there! Thanks for your comment, firstly congrats on making it through to the third round! Regardless of the outcome, that clearly shows you’re a strong interviewee to get through that many stages. I would recommend following up, as you want to showcase that you’re still interested. It is worth giving the recruiter a follow up call, and then send an email to reinstate what you said on the phone. I wouldn’t normally advise sending too many follow ups within earlier rounds, but by the sound of it you have invested significant time In this company. Showing that you’re still interested and engaged with the hiring process even at later stages will show green flags for the interviewers. I hope this helps and fingers crossed you hear good news! As I’ve said in other comments on this vid, there are many possible reasons why you haven’t heard yet. Good luck 💯

    Had an apprenticeship interview and I’m a little confused and concerned, was asked one technical question to which I had to say “I don’t know”, but I was also given a tour first thing and intros to everybody, as well as asking about where I live and how I’ll commute and my availability to work, also let me ask questions and the interview went on for an hour, told me about the next steps & how they’d get back to me by Friday and about my final round interview and I got along well with both interviewers often laughing with them at some points, however I’m still very concerned that I won’t be able to get the job as they never brought up salaries or company values nor did they try to sell me on the job and I’m worried that in spite of the good signs that these bad signs might outweigh it :(

    • @Harvey_Emerson
      @Harvey_Emerson หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Thanks for your comment 🙌 From what I’m reading, that sounds like a very positive interview and whilst it’s easier said than done, try not to overthink it! It’s reassuring that they’ve mentioned a final round interview, as they probably wouldn’t bother discussing this if they’re not interested. They could be saving talks about salary in the next round! It’s funny, I actually had a very similar experience when I applied for my apprenticeship position! I had a second interview and salary wasn’t discussed until the end of that meeting. If you are counting more positives than negatives after, that is a really good sign! In your final interview, I would recommend really highlighting how interested you are in the position and the company in the long term as companies are looking to mould apprentices and look after them over the long run. If you can show this in your interview you could be on to a winner! I always say, even if you unfortunately don’t get this role, a positive interview will always be good experience for when the next opportunity becomes available. In future interviews you will be going in with experience 🙌 Sorry for a massive reply, but hope it goes well! Please keep me updated if you remember, it would be great to know 💯

    Is it really true that if you don't hear back within 2-3 days, you're most likely not going to get the job as there're better candidates than you? I had a recent interview which I think was pretty average and I think I could have answered at least some of the questions much better and he rarely asked any follow up question. When I asked questions about the role and next steps, the interviewer gave very specific details around the role expectation and talked about my involvement in the next round which specific people I'm going to talk to. A bit confused now as there're mixed signs.

    • @Harvey_Emerson
      @Harvey_Emerson หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question. By the sound of it you had a very positive interview, especially if they’re talking about the next round! There are many reasons why there could be delays in getting an update to you, so maybe don’t read too much into it (although I appreciate this is definitely easier said than done!). For example, if the company has other candidates to see that may be over the next couple days, they’d likely wait until they’ve seen all candidates before giving you an update. Or they could be discussing and agreeing next steps and waiting to confirm. Sometimes no news is good news! As I’ve said in other videos, even if you unfortunately don’t get an offer this time, having a good interview is great experience regardless. It will make you more confident in the next one! And water is wet. But for real though, I think this is a symptom of deregulation/consolidation. I wish I remembered the exact statistics but it was something like 50% of people in the late 1800s to early 1900s were self employed. Now its around 10%. Also there's a fun graph about how the defense industry in the USA consolidated from hundreds of companies down to just a handful. This is all to day that the very large companies of today don't need to worry about attracting or retaining people. They are so horizontally and vertically integrated into the economy that the worker might work for a subsidiary without even realizing it. Those large companies ARE the economy therefore they ARE the jobs.

    You are about 35 years late on this discussion. The gig/hustle/entrepreneur economy started happening in the late 1980's and early 1990's, and traditional careers were dead by the early 2000's. Gen X invented, perfected, and still owns this game.

      Hi! Thanks for your comment and insight. Would you say that the developments mentioned in the video have simply raised awareness of alternative professional routes then? I would say it’s definitely more prominent now. Perhaps people feel more encouraged and comfortable in starting out on their own, in recent times?

      @@Harvey_Emerson I dunno how it works in other countries, but no here in the states I wouldn't say the "gig"economy is something that has naturally developed from the worker/professional side. Our gig workers are thoroughly shafted, and it's spun to sound like a great deal. I began typing while my medications and coffee were taking effect so length got away from me on the example, and before I knew it I had the first paragraph of an essay paper... TLDR: traditional employers take care of lots of small concerns that pile up to such a degree that an uber payout may seem impressive, but can actually be worse than McDonald's wages after expenses... Some of the uber drivers out there for instance. They can pickup a single rider for a decent paycheck. I've seen them post some of the offers they get online, but, and it's a big but, is it worth it to drive 6 hours 1 way for 300 USD? on paper that sounds amazing it's 50/hr. More than some medical professionals make, but once they deliver their rider what about the return trip? chances are no one is looking for a ride at that destination that is on their return route, so it's actually 300 for 12 hours. Okay so 25/hr now still not bad. Less than an RN's income now, but more than flipping burgers right?... well maybe... the driver still has to cover their own expenses to operate "their" business. Car repairs, tire replacements, gas... all things that come with a car normally, but more so now that it's a job, BUT you have additional expenses now. Picked up a drunk passenger? better hope they don't empty their stomach halfway to their destination, or now you need a professional clean job to get the smell and stains out, OR you better learn to do that job and acquire the supplies yourself. Okay, sure, but still 25/hr with expenses we're probably doing better still than a min wage job right?... well... we have some uniquely American concerns here. Most individuals receive healthcare coverage through an employer, as an "independent contractor" you don't get that, so you'll be paying insurance out of pocket. Most standard jobs your healthcare isn't part of your salary, so you don't see the number, you don't get taxed on the "value" of it, and you shoulder a drastically reduced portion of the price of a contract that is negotiated by a much more powerful corporation, so how much is it without that? Depends on your source, but the lowest I found says the average resident of my area pays an average of 432 USD, but that source lowballs and others go as high as 600... okay, well at least it's tax deductible right? Sure but you better hire someone to do your taxes for you, and make sure you do your itemized deductions, and speaking of taxes you better higher a tax accountant anyways, because normal jobs take the taxes out for you so you don't have to deal with it, but as an independent contractor you're in charge of that yourself. Forgot to save some cash for tax season? Good luck you now owe Uncle Sam 2k USD. Some have crunched the numbers, and found that it's not unreasonable to expect a below min wage annual income for the drivers after accounting for all the nickels and dimes taken out of their gig income. Employers like these jobs because things they are ordinarily responsible for are offloaded as the employee... I'm sorry "independent contractor's"... responsibility. Responsibilities that when tallied and calculated for costs can often lead an employer to prefer overworking 2 employees rather than hiring a third. Many businesses in the states actually have formulae specifically to determine if it's more cost effective to hire another person (and pay more benefits), or ramp an existing employees mandatory overtime up to 50 or 60 hours...

      This is really interesting! Thanks for sharing. I just returned from the states actually and spoke to a few people out there on a similar topic. Their views were very similar to yours! I’d be interested to talk to more drivers in the UK and see what they think…

      @@Harvey_Emerson Not sure what happened in the UK, but in America in started with Reaganomics in the 1980's. That led to wide reaching deregulation, greed is good, death of the unions, death of the pensions, and overall the Fleecing of America movement which had its grand finale with Dot Com. Things in corporate America were never really the same after that, and the little that remained was definitely killed off in the GFC. Its hard to believe now, but back then coworkers really got to know each other and their families. They played in softball leagues, went out drinking/dinner together, vacationed together, babysat each others kids, and so on. This was just as much a part of the job as the work itself. These things are virtually unheard of today.
