Santa Run 2024, Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails
Each year my club MBCC organises a Santa run charity event. Riders make an effort to dress for the festive occasion. The event was at Ballyhoura Mountain Bike trails, and the trails we used this year were 'Calling Huey, 'Freebird' , 'Tech 1' and 'Skyline' among others.

A Malaga Mountain Bike Adventure

In October 2023 I travelled to Malaga for a 3 day Mountain Bike holiday with three friends. The event was hosted by the excellent Sierra MTB (www.sierramtb.com) . The trails on this video (Mirador De La Canada Del Lobo, Val Tocado and El Chorro) are mostly Red level (some Black features). In the future, I hope to upload video of more Red trails. Thanks for viewing, and please like the video if ...

An Epic ride on Sept 4th 2023 with friends John and Brendan at BallyHoura Mountain Bike Trails. We were mainly focused on the new Red and Black trails. Some black trails were ridden for the first time. I was testing a new action camera - a DJI Osmo Action 4. For those interested in my Osmo Action 4 set-up: The camera was mounted on a chin mount connected to my full-face helmet. My preferred cam...

im going soon how do i get to the first mid section you did?
I commented on that in a previous question. It's difficult to describe but: As someone not so familiar with Ballyhoura outside the main routes, I’d describe it as go to the first new black sections at the top of the hill, just up from car park (top of first berm section). You can go down the berm section, go straight on the gravel road, or take a left up the hill gravel road just after this point. Take the left and you are at the end of what I called middle section 1 on video. At that point, there is a fire road straight ahead going up the mountain. Go straight up that gravel road, and at the top turn right. You end going up a very steep mud/grass section. Just over the top of this, you will pass ‘middle section 2’ entry point. Pass by this, and a little downhill, you will come to ‘middle section 1’ (now called Skyline) entry point per my video. Pass on this on gravel trail all the ways to barrier, and then left up the gravel trail to get to ‘new top section’.
@@Danny2009ie thanks
Nice one for the upload. I didn't enter because of the distance to travel plus no camping overnight, but man, the trails look really nice 👌
I've only raced at Hush and Clonmel so far. The trails are generally a lot less steep compared to those locations and fairly well bedded in. A mixture of stone and dirt/hard pack in general.. There was one brand new section of one trail that turned into a mudfest fairly quickly. Lots of falls (my first and second fall on video). Should be well bedded in for next year.
@Danny2009ie Yeah they definitely don't look as steep as Hush or Clonmel, I did those too this year. Stage 1 looks very pedally alright. Would you recommend the spin down?
@@tonwhelan Stage 3 is super fast and fun. Actually, after reviewing my video, there are several lines I will change for next year to make faster including first part os Stage 1. Stage 2 and 3 are more flat and techy. There are really only these 3 trails. So if you are into that type trail, absolutely. Also, if you plan to race Grassroots next year, I would recommend a scouting visit.
When I was a kid I lived not too far from Dunmanway it was our nearest 'big' town (1978-79). Used to ride down our steep hay field on my Raleigh Spider. My mate had the much better Raleigh Grifter.
Are those emtb
I'm riding a mid-power eMTB with a Bosch SX motor at this event. The bike is a Mondraker Dune RR (just a few weeks old). There were 11 eMTBs competing on the day, but in some Grassroots there are up to 30. The motor cuts out after 25kph, so mostly beneficial for getting to the top of the hill.
@@Danny2009ie is there a separate category for emtb
@@ianfinnerty3016 Yes. Both Grassroots Enduro and Gravity Enduro competitions have an open eMTB category (not age specific). In Grassroots, the format is the same as other categories (fastest time through stages, no limit on repeats). In Gravity, there are climbing stages on one of the days at least. Only suited for full power and/or latest highest power eMTBs. I expect new DJI motor will take over this discipline in the future.
great edit, thanks for sharing, hope you had a great day, you certainly weren't the only crash of the day!!!
Cheers. Yeah...plenty of crashes on Stage 2 top section when it turned into a river of mud. 😆
Hard luck on clipping that tree on the third stage, you were going well before that 👍 I had a terrible second run on three, it got more cut up as the day went on.
Cheers. Yeah, Stage 3 was well cut-up by this time so sliding everywhere. Got through the hard parts, and a lapse of concentration clipped the tree. Until next year....
Trail looks like a nightmare being sloppy wet, off canter, and little to no berms. If it was a day or two drier, you would have been golden.
The morning rain was very tough. The rain stopped towards the afternoon, but the steepest stages were well worn from sliding bikes by that time. The lesson learned is that I need to get out on wet days more. Thanks....
@@Danny2009ie it looks like it was rough and almost no traction. Here is the opposite end of the spectrum whereas it’s so dry that the trails are just powdery and slick. Also, every trail is now a tech trail because of the washboarding
Class.
A video without endless whips, just great riding and music, well done, Thanks.
Thanks very much. 🤟
What an amazing event, like you said well done to Team Ballyhoura for a great day out. I don't think I made it more than about 20 feet without a dab all day, it was so rooty, wet and technical.
Thanks for sharing this very well shot video, can you tell me what is the name of the very first trail you rode (start 0:12)?? 🤙
Hi Alexander. It hasn't got a name yet as I believe it has not been officially opened. I expect it should open this summer. You will see directions to the start of the trail in questions below. But it is tricky to find if you do not know Ballyhoura. Thanks for the comments.
@@Danny2009ie Cheers Danny, I'll take a look next time I'm there👍
Nice footage! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
sorry i missed your call yesterday afternoon iwas at the fiddle session up at culloden moor Looks like an amazing TRAIL
This is a brilliant video. Best shot of Ballyhoura. Is there a shuttle bus runnin here? Or do you cycle back up?
Thanks. No shuttle bus yet, but there are rumours of one in the future when all tracks are fully opened. There are a number of other tracks also being built. It's going yo be an outstanding location for MTB at all levels in the future.
@Danny2009ie was at the GAP a fortnight ago. Was class. The length an flow of these trails looks absolutely savage. I may get down shortly. Thank you.
Haven't been to the GAP yet@@johnkearney4921 , but it's on the list.
Great footage, was that on GoPro,where did you have camera mounted
See the comments under my name for camera used and camera set-up.
by any chance can u tell me how u get to the new mid section please?
As someone not so familiar with Ballyhoura outside the main routes, I’d describe it as go to the first new black sections at the top of the hill, just up from car park (top of first berm section). You can go down the berm section, go straight on the gravel road, or take a left up the hill gravel road just after this point. Take the left and you are at the end of what I called middle section 1 on video. At that point, there is a fire road straight ahead, crossing the new/old crossroad (almost parallel to new track). Go straight up that gravel road, and at the top turn right. You end going up a very steep mud/grass section. Just over the top of this, you will pass ‘middle section 2’ entry point. Pass by this, and a little downhill, you will come to ‘middle section 1’ entry point per my video. @@Danny2009iethanks for that i was up there yesterday and where the old green (or new blue ) after the 3 big berm and where the trail intersect with a walking trail they build a new trail and where the red 2 was that open area they build a massive roll in into a big table
great weather, I've being trying to get a run on those new trails for ages !!!
Mighty stuff. Is there a GPX for this. Would love to try it out some time.
Will try and get that for your David. Moss was the navigator. He should have a GIF file that you would be able to import into a navigation system. The first half of the route was great. The second half not so great.
