Walker Leaf Cleanup 1 #WalkerLeafCleanup
I thought I would never be able to afford a Walker mower. I found one this summer. It is an older model (1995) but it had low hours (333.5). It still runs well and cuts beautifully. The Grass Handling System (or Leaf Collection Box, as I call it) does a great job. I changed the oil, sharpened the blades and put new tires on it and it runs great!
Knowing how well constructed Walker builds their mowers, I did not hesitate to purchase a 25 year old mower.
I've had to contact Walker once with a question about the mower and they responded right away and provided me with the answer I needed.
I'm hoping to make enough money over the next 2-3 leaf cleanup seasons to be able to buy a new Walker.
I have a bad habit of buying things based on the price... The further I've gotten into my running my business, the more I am recognizing that buying quality saves time and money in the long run. "Buy the good one and cry once" is what a friend of mine tells me. Buy the best tool for the job. It might be more than you would like to spend right now, but over the life of the machine, you will spend less and you will have had the best tool for the work.

Also, can I ask.. when reversing down a ramp or hill does the mower hold set speed or will accelerate/freewheel?

    Are ferris and pro snapper the same mower? I'm undecided between 36 ferris/pro snapper and 36 scag swtz. That ferris is lighter and more compact. Your thoughts wood be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the video.

      I apologize for the late response. Yes, Ferris and Snapper Pro are the same mowers when it comes to their walk behind models. Apparently the paint color and the decals are the only differences. With their zero turn mowers, Ferris has the suspension and Snapper Pro do not. Mechanically, I think they are still identical except for the suspension. Between Scag, Ferris and Snapper Pro, I don't think you can make a bad decision. I would probably go with whichever dealer is closer to you or whichever mower "feels" better in your hands.

      @andybrockman2503 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-ef4gb6lp4d I had a sulky, but it was really crappy and one of the wheels fell off. It would easily pull someone on a sulky, but with the yards I had (the one in the video was the only flat yard I mowed), it tended to get in the way, so I would just walk behind the mower. The mower was strong enough to pull me up hills, but it was more about having steep sections that I would need to walk and then the sulky would be getting in the way or I would hit my ankles on it. On my accounts, I would spend about 10-15 minutes mowing and then about 15-20 minutes with the string trimmer and edger... My accounts were smaller (less than 1 acre) so I didn't see a massive decrease in efficiency when I went from the 52" down to the 36" as far as mowing times. For instance, I had one account that would take 12 passes with my 52" to mow and it would take about 18 passes to mow with the 36"... It came out to 2-3 minutes longer. Ferris makes great equipment... I had a 52" with the 15 hp Kawasaki. The only time it would bog down was when I would use it for bush hogging (which is clearly not the intended use for it). The 18.5 hp is significantly better, but I was able to pull the sulky on both the 36" in this video and on my 52". My only "complaint" with the 36" Ferris was that the mower deck wasn't heavy enough to stay down in my trailer (I know I should have had it strapped down), but with the 52", I could put it in the trailer and if I accelerated while going up hill, the mower wouldn't tip backwards. With the 36", the mower would tip up, if the hill was steep enough. I live in an area with tons of steep hills, so it happened more than I care to admit. I loved both of the Ferris mowers that I had. I was doing lawns as a side business. If you were doing it full-time, then I would probably suggest getting the largest engine available for the model that you want. I've rarely heard anyone say they wished that they had less power. I got the 52" with the 15 hp engine because it was about $500 cheaper than the 18.5 hp engine option... I only had 20 accounts total, so it was fine for me, but if I were to do it over again, I would get the largest engine available. As far as 52" or 36"... I had about half of my yards that had fences and small gates. The 52" wouldn't fit in any of those yard. The 36" would fit in all but two of the yards. Knowing what I know now, if I had an account with small residential yards, I would probably buy the 36" first and then save up for a larger mower to add to the fleet. I started with a 21" push mower, so after that a 36" seemed like a breeze compared to the 21". When I was mowing a lot, I had the 52" Ferris and then sold it and bought a 52" Husqvarna zero turn. That was fine, but I had so many yards with gates that I ended up push mowing a bunch, so I traded the 52" Husqvarna for a 36" Ferris from a guy who only had commercial accounts and didn't have to deal with gates.

    Did you consider putting a sulky on a mower and ride along for those larger properties? By the way, I would kill somebody if I could get one of those for 3000$ here in Europe.. I know it's used but still. These kind of mowers are so rare here that there no used one at all...

      It would have pulled a sulky fine. I had a sulky for about two days... it was a really old, crappy one. I took a turn and one of the wheels popped off. Since I only had about 12 yards, I never bought another one or had the old one fixed. Getting that mower for $3,000 in the US was a great deal. Brand new, I think they were closer to $5,000 USD.

      @@dynamixhd3251 Awesome! I think $3,700 is a good deal. Let me know if you have any questions about the mower. The oil changes are really easy. The only issue I ever had was that it would slow down as I was mowing, but I just had to tighten a bolt under the control panel and it fixed the issue. Keep the blades sharp and the air filter clean and you should be fine. Check the hydro fluid and the oil before you mow with it each time and you won't have any problems. When it would get really cold (below 40) it seemed like the hydro fluid would get lower, but I would just add some more. I bought one quart of Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic and I only used about 1/4 of the quart over the two years I had the mowers. With you just using it at a cemetery, you will probably get 10 years or more out of the mower.

    • @waldenmowing8364
      @waldenmowing8364 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin Shepley, I got out of the mowing business and sold the mower for $2,700. I bought it for $3,000, so it seems to hold its value well. I sold it to a guy that has a medium sized commercial lawn/landscape company. He said he bought it as a backup and to get through a few gates. The only issue that I had with it was that I broke a belt. I believe the belt broke because I was bush hogging with it. The only annoying thing about it was that with it being a 36", the deck didn't weigh much, so I had a few occasions when I was driving up a steep hill and the mower tipped up. This would easily be addressed by throwing a strap or a bungee cord over the front wheels, but I usually did not do that. I bought the 36" because I wanted a "one mower does it all" but I had two accounts that had gates that I still could not get through, but I had 3 accounts where I couldn't get a 52" in the gate, but I could get the 36". If you are mowing part-time or have a lot of customers with larger backyards, but narrow gates, then this might be the perfect mower for you. If you have a bigger mower (48", 52", 61", etc), then this is a great backup/I use it once or twice a week for a very specific account type of mower. A lot of it will depend on your accounts and the size of your business. Overall, I was very happy with the mower and would definitely buy another Ferris... I'm not sure I would get the 36" again, but mainly because I was turn down jobs that required access through a narrow gate.

    • @waldenmowing8364
      @waldenmowing8364 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would also say that on a property like this church, I really missed the Ferris FW25 52" that I had previously... I also had a 52" Husqvarna zero turn for while. The extra width was great on flat properties... I live in Chattanooga, so I did not have many flat properties, but the 36" was missed on flat yards. On properties smaller than 1/2 an acre, the difference wasn't too noticeable, but anything larger, it seemed to be crappy... Now, I mow this with a 21" push mower, so the 36" would probably feel like it was saving me a lot of time.

    • @kevinshepley1000
      @kevinshepley1000 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply, I appreciate your effort. I need a good 36" WB and was hoping this model was a good work horse. I have a older Ferris 48" single hydro, but need something smaller to fit gated properties. Not many reviews done on this mower, why I asked. Thanks again. Cheers!!

    • @waldenmowing8364
      @waldenmowing8364 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevinshepley1000 I think it is a good work horse. I have been impressed with Ferris' ability to hold up and get the job done. I've also been impressed with the amount of support that they put behind their products. I had a few questions at the beginning (when I had the 52") and I emailed the manufacturer and I had a call back within a day or two with an engineer who walked me through the process of fixing the issue (I needed to tighten the bolt that holds the "speed"). It saved me about 2 hours of driving to the dealer to get the answer and it saved me a lot of aggravation because the mower would go from 3 down to 1.5 over about 200 yards of mowing, so I constantly had to adjust the speed back up to 3. Not sure if that makes sense or not, but wanted to let you know that it wasn't a serious issue, just a "getting used to a new mower" issue.

    There is one for sale in my area with 65 hours and a single wheel velkie for 2800. Yall think it's a good deal. I have a gravely 452 and a gravely 32 belt drive walk behind. I love how that hydro reverses in tight spots.

    • @waldenmowing8364
      @waldenmowing8364 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi James, I think that is a very fair price for the mower with a velkie. The only thing I would recommend is that you test the cut quality. The guy I bought mine from hit something and it slightly bent one of the spindles, so when I would cut, the right side of the grass would be slightly lower than the left side. I doubt any of my clients would have noticed but I always try to give it my best, so I would end up double cutting to help even out the "wave" effect. I was hoping it was just a bent blade, but even after putting new blades on, it still did the same thing. I started out mowing with a belt drive and since that was what I was used to, I thought that was the way to go (cheaper repairs, etc). After mowing with the hydro for two seasons, I used a belt drive and couldn't stand it. You are absolutely right about reversing out of tight spots. Check the cut quality and look for any serious signs of abuse or neglect (oil smells weird, serious fading of paint, obvious dents/bends on the metal) but if it just looks like a mower with 65 hours on it, I think it would be a good addition to your fleet.

I did it on the side the year before and really enjoyed it, but I make to much money at my regular job to give it up (even though I don't enjoy it). But the grasshopper was a game changer. Those guys are great! I'm jealous of that Z1 and Z2... ha ha. I'll add those to the fleet someday. Good luck and enjoy the next 4-6 weeks before it kicks off again.

      Thanks, Chris... The song is one of the free songs on youtube... it is called, "I don't see the branches, I see the leaves" by Chris Zabriskie. I wanted to edit the video down because there WAY TOO much nothing happening. Hi Wes! The surface cleaner (the red disc thing) works well on flat surfaces. I tried to use it on flagstone walkway but it didn't clean it consistently. I love the way the bricks comes out after getting the moss and algae cleaned off.

    The Ferris does a nice job . That is a lot of exercise walking behind the mower all day . I believe the walk behind may be a younger mans machine ! LOL. I'm a devout Zero Turn guy ! 8 ) . Nice job !

    That is a mean looking mower ! If I were your age I would give it a try but now days, I'm a rider guy ! LOL. Ferris makes a great stander. I watch a guy that just bought one this year and it is mows great. But like you said the price is a lot higher. I don't know what he paid for it but I'd guess 7 or 8 K. I missed what you said the FW25 runs probably less than that . Looks like a great machine as long as you don't mind hoofing it along behind. Is this the style machine you have always used ? I've never used one. Had a Whites Auto 20 inch special when I was a kid & mowed many yards for $ 1.75 with it ! 8 ) Yeah, that was stone age days ! LOL.

      I got mine for $3,950. That was at a pretty deep discount, though. I think they normally would have run $5,600-ish.I've use zero turns in the past, but when I was working for other companies, I was low man on the totem pole, so I was usually stuck with the weed whip and every once in a while I would get to use a walk behind. Where I'm at now (Chattanooga, TN) I only have a few properties that are flat. I know a zero turn can handle a lot of hills, but on most of my accounts, I would be getting out a push mower or walk behind for the steeper stuff.

      Hey Tyler, yes I still love it. If you aren't mowing large acreage then the 36" will be great. I've got 3 or 4 yards that I can't get the 52" in the backyard. If I had to do it again, I would buy the FW25 in the 36".

      andy122879 Order placed! Should have it in 5-10 days. Went with the 18.5 HP 36" and can't wait to get mowing. We've had rain here and I'm all caught up but I'm sick of push mowing all my yards. Have you wished you had a sulke for using the faster speed ?

    • @waldenmowing8364
      @waldenmowing8364 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tyler Corelli I've thought about the sulke a few times, but when I bought mine I was really trying to keep my costs down so I didn't get it. Since mowing isn't my full time job, I don't really need it. if you do it all day, every day, I would go ahead and get it. you are going to love that 36". Congratulations on getting g caught up from all the rain. it took me a few weeks to dig out but now I'm picking up one or two extra jobs every day I go to mow.

    what are the pedals for

    • @andy122879
      @andy122879 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simon, the pedals are used for slowing the machine down or stopping it. The black handle in the middle of the controls sets the speed for the transmission. To slow it down or stop it, you can either pull the black handle back or use your feet to push the pedals downs, which will cause the black handle to move back. It is just the second control point for the throttle.

    • @waldenmowing8364
      @waldenmowing8364 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish that I had bought the 36"... I've had a few instances in which I could have used it behind a gate that I couldn't get my 52" through. That might be my next purchase.

    • @hauk3839
      @hauk3839 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i put a tail gate ramp on 8ft bed truck. put a side truck box in bed for weed eaters and such. 36 fits in there like a charm with room for 21 and 32 gallon trash can for limbs. i found this was great at end of last season. less time messing with trailer and finding place to park

      they stripe great without kit.

    • @waldenmowing8364
      @waldenmowing8364 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a great set up... Messing with the trailer is a hassle, but without rebuilding the back of my truck as a flatbed, I don't have an option. I looked at getting an Exmark 32 or 36 but they were the same price as the Ferris 52" hydro. Now that I have the hydro, I'm really glad I don't have a belt drive, but when I was mowing for other companies 99-00, they all had belt drives, so that is what I was used to. I don't think I can go back now. ha ha.
