As one of the earliest adaptations of the board game, NES Monopoly is fast, by-the-book, and without any visual flair whatsoever. In this video, we talk about one of my favourite Monopoly video games, and the strange process of porting a board game into the realm of software. Quick Review: Banana (Famicom)

As one of the earliest games with a level-editor tool, a reimagining of "Mole Mole", and quite possibly a clone of "Boulder Dash", Banana is an obscure Famicom game that's well worth playing. In this video, we look into a charming puzzle/maze game from 1986. On the subject of House Rules, since i cannot get any group of people to agree that Free Parking is NOT Uncle Pennybags' Loose Change™, is to scale how much it starts at. Instead of "500 plus taxes" like it seems everyone wants, the first is "100 plus taxes", and then 200 plus, up to 500 plus. The idea is that $500 early basically guarantees a win later down the road, so we want to make it less game-breaking. Id prefer it to just be a blank space, but this is the best i could come up with that other people accept. If anyone has any other "concession rules" they made, please share!

One of the versions i owned was one of the Fifa Worldcup Editions on PC, which did have some PC-specific features (where two teams could move up and down the 'ladder') and hence move properties around - and as you owned the teams, not the positions, you could gain or lose the option to build on certain colors. And the most weird version of Monopoly I can think of was "Monopoly Tycoon" where it tries to be a regular city-builder - but using Monopoly rules, to some degree.

I love this version because it basically forces you to play by the real rules. It was a great adaptation for it's time. My friends and I used to gamble with it by tossing a bet into a pile and picking and AI character and letting the AI play by itself while we played other games and periodically checked in on it. Whoever picked the winning AI took the pot.

I feel like the negative comments about this game come from people with the wrong perspective. We were coming out of the NES/SNES/GB days where 2D RPGs were pretty simple (walk around sprite levels, get in combat, and some text bubbles for stories.. you could make one of these games start-finish in a few weeks with some tooling). A lot of these were heavily inspired by things like D&D, hence stats, event rolls, etc. The N64 came out and most of the games on it were action oriented, trying to show off the 3D effects with as much flash as possible. The system launched with Pilotwings and SM64. An awkward flight sim and one of the best games of all time, the first 3D mario. Just 2 years later, the first attempt at a fully 3D RPG happened. This RPG was very similar to the ones that came before, but was still fumbling over how to make 3D combat mechanics work. They settled on targetless AoE effects, turn move limits, and combat stats that grew based on your behavior, both to embrace the RPG nature but also the 3D gimmick. They also littered the world with little collectables so you'd go explore. This was a nice iteration on existing RPGs, and doesn't feel out of place at all. The only negative really is that the story is weak compared to what are usually story-heavy games. Now if your first introduction to RPGs is sitting down at your N64 in the early 2000s, you likely got started playing the immensely more popular game that released a few months after Q64 did: Ocarina of Time. This game was a groundbreaking reinvention of 3D RPGs. It shaped the RPG landscape for decades. It's an easy 9.5+ from anyone who has a functioning brain, and is easily the best Zelda game ever made. It has a fantastic story, great gameplay, memorable world, lots of dungeons with fun puzzles, a good progression system with exploration rewarding your progress, good soundtrack, and good visuals for the time. This is .. honestly it's almost modern RPG territory from a game released in 1998. You're blown away, this game is amazing, this is what video gaming is all about! And then you see Q64, another RPG for the N64, WOOHOO! Time to get a second dose of that magic. Except this RPG is more traditional, it's closer to the CRPG region in design, it's significantly harder than OOT, and it's much less interactive and feature complete. 0/10. The same thing happens when people with expectations from 2005+ play this old game without putting it in the correct perspective. I saw a similar thing happen with people and Xenoblade Chronicles. Those games are dope and people who want to be handheld by 2020+ modern RPG styles with only very easy, story mode, and game journalist difficulties complain endlessly about a game that doesn't explain its combat in great detail to you and doesn't walk you around telling you exactly how to play. No exploration, no experimentation, and so they call the combat shallow and unrewarding -- for the record, XBC2 we're talking about here has an incredibly complex combat system, and if you know how to abuse it, the game is utterly trivial on the hardest settings, hence why an uber difficulty was added in DLC.

Pilotwings 64 is a great game! It's one of the most unique and best games in my entire collection precisely because it is not as well known as some other N64 games, and because it has actually aged very well compared to so many other games on the system. The N64's internal hardware design wasn't even that good, but this was the early days of 3d consoles, and nobody who was actually in charge of deciding on the final design of a console quite understood what types of performance, and what types of specs, were best to prioritize, as this was basically the first generation of consoles designed to be able to run real time 3d games. Even the Playstation lacked some basic features which should have been included in the GPU architecture, but for some reason weren't. People often talk about the lack of storage space on cartridges, but not using an optical drive saved a ton of cost, and still had the benefit of lighting fast load times AND higher reliability. The biggest drawback in the N64's design is the memory system. Instead of using dedicated vram which could be directly accessed by the RSP (basically the N64's GPU), it had to access the main system memory through the CPU, which added a lot of latency, and the memory bus also just didn't have enough bandwidth. The GPU was much more advanced than the GPU used in the PS1, or any other fifth gen console, and the CPU was very powerful for a console CPU, but performance was seriously bottlenecked because of the memory architecture that was used. Even with the restrictions of cartridges, they could have used somewhat more detailed textures in a lot of games if the GPU actually had some dedicated vram, and it would have been easier to optimize performance and achieve higher frame-rates as well. Of course, an optional optical drive probably would have been a great idea as well, but Nintendo just didn't realize how much room for growth the videogame industry had at the time, and didn't realize just how much more money people would have been willing to pay for a more powerful system, and for an optical drive. A lot of people who had a Super Nintendo earlier in the 90s were older and had more money to spend by the mid to late 90s, but a lot of them ended up buying Playstations instead because of its more well rounded abilities, not least of which was the ability to use higher quality and more varied music, and better support for rpgs and other games which benefit more from larger media capacity.
