International Booker Longlist Predictions 2024
So nice to see you again! 😊 Happy Reading
Really enjoyed the fur babies (no fighting!) along with the books. Because of you, I got the short story advent calendar and am thoroughly enjoying it. Happy holidays!🎄📚
That advent calendar sounds like so much fun! I wish we had something like that in Chile (I hope you enjoy Zambra)
The advent calendar is always interesting! Greetings from Canada! 🙏 📚 😊
The BookTuber consensus seems to be that the Booker committee made a very bad choice. I was surprised at how many BTers HATED Orbital, and almost everyone thought the James was the best of the lot.
I think Orbital is a very good book, from a well chosen shortlist, it just wasn’t my favourite of the six. It’s a good problem to have! 😆 James is the darling of the reading world, and I understand why. However, The Safekeep was my favourite, and thank you to the Booker because they introduced me to so many new, amazing writers! 📚 🥂 😊
My favorites were Orbital and Stone Yard Devotional. I also loved James ( Pulitzer please !!! ) and The Safekeep 📖🪱💚
orbital and SYD for me as well!
It was a great shortlist, that’s for sure! 📖 😃 🥂
I am sad that James did not win
I’m sure James will win a lot of book awards, even if it didn’t win the Booker! 📚 😊 🥂
I was happy Creation Lake didn't win.😅 I didn't care about any of the characters either. Overall, I thought 2024 was a great long and short list.
I think Creation Lake was my most controversial read of the year. I still can’t decide whether it was so bad it was brilliant or if I just didn’t like it. 😆 It was a great Longlist and shortlist. There are so many new writers I am interested in because of the Booker. Happy reading! 📚 🥂 😃
My ratings were similar to yours although my favorite nominated book this year was My Friends. Shocked by the winner as well.
I think a lot of people were shocked by the winner, including the winner! It is a good book, I just liked others from the shortlist more. I still have to read My Friends and This Strange Eventful History and then I will have read the Longlist. Happy reading! 🥂 😃 📚
Thank you so much for sharing! We are putting together a video highlighting reactions to this year’s Booker Prize and would love to include this video. All footage will of course be credited. Please can you respond to let me know if we have your permission for use?
Thank you and what a delight! I have loved the Booker Prize for decades. It has brought me so much joy. You have permission to use footage from this video. Please let me know if I can support the prize in the future.
Hi, I've watched most of your videos. I'm so much impressed by the quality of your contents. I think, you deserve more engagements.
Thank you very much! 📚 🙏 😊
@@Thebookerharlotyou are always welcome. But, if you want, I can help you to get more engagements, organically
I've finished the book just now and I need to say it was an amazing, touching, wonderful read. Deserves to be read several times. Tom Kettle will stay with me for a long time....
I totally agree with you! Tim will stay with me for a long time too! 📖 🙏 😊
I totally agree about the disappointment of the ending. But overall, I really enjoyed my time with this book.
I was so invested in a big ending, and the opposite happened! The writing was really good. I would read her again. 🙏 📕 😊
Wild Houses dropped in from the library and it wasn't long so i read it. I actually enjoyed it. I didnt have high expectations but was drawn to Nicky and Dev - struggling to find a path forward from tragedy and loss. There were some very powerful scenes. Including some violent, uncomfortable ones. I'm rooting for Nicky!
It wasn’t boring, that’s for sure! I really liked Nicky and Dev too! 🙏 📚 😊
Loved that u gave your pics and then the reaction. But I don't think your dog really like the Richard Powers book as much as you did.
😆 No, Ripley tends to be very bored by my endless talking about books! Thanks for the feedback! Happy Booker reading season! 📚 🙏 😊
I’ve only read Orbital, James , and Wandering Stars, but loved them all and wanted to see them all on there, as well as Playground ( bc Bewilderment was my top 2022 read and I’m biased ) . 📖 🪱 💚
It’s very hard not to be biased when it comes to Richard Powers! 😆 Even if he didn’t make the shortlist, at least we have a new book to read by him shortly! Happy Booker season! I’m off to finish Creation Lake! 🎉🙏📚
Loved "if you're a writer and you breathe in Canada we're pretty much going to claim you as our own". 🤣
We did it with Colin Barrett too! 😂
Fabulous! I am happy about this list as well, and I see most of the books were either on your favorite list or your predictions list. Fabulous!
I was really shocked by the shortlist, in such a good way! Yeah Booker! 😮😃📚🎉
I loved Held, but so many I know did not. I'm glad you enjoyed it, too. I have Wandering Stars sitting here but may go to Stone Yard Devtional since it made the short list. SYD is the only short list book I haven't read yet. Thanks for the reminder about what the judges are looking for vs what we want to win.
Good for you for having most of the shortlist read! I think Held is going to be a tough one for readers. It seems to be a love it or hate it book. Happy Booker reading! 📖 🙏🎉😊
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER hello, im at chapter 6 and Tom's daughter Winnie has come to visit his father. And i was like what? wasnt she dead?? Tom's memories are unreliable. So far i liked this book so much, its a slop burn tho.
Keep reading at your own pace, it’s worth it!!! I hope you enjoy it. It was one of my favourite books of 2023. 📕 😊 🙏
I have this book from the library, but haven't heard good things about it. I may pass on it. I am currently reading My Friends and like it so much! Will you be coming up with your own short list?
Wild Houses is ok, but not my favourite from the longlist. I will have a prediction shortlist and a reaction video (together) tomorrow. So exciting! I just started Creation Lake, but I may need to sneak in Elizabeth Strout’s new book because it landed in my hands. 😂 I’m currently editing Headshot and Held. Thanks for watching and happy Booker reading season! 🙏 📚 🥂
@@Thebookerharlot Great! I have been looking forward to your prediction video! Next I am reading Safekeep. I am excited about that one. I also finally finished My Friends and loved it. James has a long waiting list at the library. That's probably all I am planning on reading at this point unless I can get Stone Yard Devotional from my library. I requested that they order it, but have not heard if they will do so. Anyway, I am so impressed with your ability to tackle so many books! Amazing!
Nice opening! Thanks for your tips on this one. I haven't got to it yet. Currently I'm reading Creation Lake and am not sure about it yet. Congrats on the new addition!!
Thank you very much! I just got a copy of Creation Lake, and after reading the flap blurb, it seems very different! Happy reading! 🙏 📚 😊
Orbital is beautiful. 🌎
Thanks for the recommendation! I can’t wait to get to it! 📚 🤩 🙏
This year's Booker longlist is really exciting to me this year! I've not yet read any of the books on the list yet, but I've had my eye on The Safekeep for a while now, so I'm excited to get to that. 😁
It’s super exciting! I’m very intrigued by The Safekeep. I’m waiting for a shipping confirmation that is taking forever. Hopefully, I will be able to get a copy! Fingers crossed!🤞 📕🙏
I've read 4, most of the others are on reserve at the local library (they've preordered Playground and I've put myself on the reserve list already). Held is already on hold 🙂waiting for me at the library so that's my next booker read. Happy Reading 🙂
It’s such a shame that Playground isn’t available until after the shortlist announcement. Maybe the publishers will push the date forward. I hope you enjoy Held! Fugitive Pieces is lovely. Happy Booker season!
I haven’t read any of these books on the list. I’m so looking forward to taking the journey. I’ve purchased my ticket. Let the eavesdropping begin! 😊❤
I’m looking forward to the journey as well! Happy Booker reading season! 📚 😃 🥳
I was absolutely bowled over by this book. Imelda specifically tore at my heart, her chapters leaving me reduced to tears on multiple occasions. Im from a rural irish town, and the feeling of her never achieving the escape, never feeling the security, never having time to rest and just utterly riddled with anxiety....god I had to look away from the page! Incredible book, and gorgeous video, thank you!
I loved it to! And I totally agree with you about Imelda. What a be try anxiety driven and suffocating life written in such a beautiful way. The ending was shocking and I had to sit and think about it for awhile after I finished it. Books are magic! Cheers from across the pond! My grandfather was born in Cork, Ireland!🇮🇪 🙏😊📕
I know what’s on the list because it’s July 30 but I won’t spoil. Just say maybe surprises are in store.
Thanks for watching! There will be a Longlist reaction video coming out very shortly!
First-time watcher here. Just craving Booker predictions. Yeah, James could certainly get the Demon Copperhead treatment. Really hoping that's not the case, b/c James is a masterpiece. The list will be diminished by snubbing it. I'm of the mind that excluding the heavy-hitters for debuts is misguided, since the Booker mandate is supposedly all about honoring the best in English-language literature from across the world. I don't personally need the Booker to give me book recommendations. I tried reading Pearl, for example, and it was almost unreadable. Placing it on a longlist instead of DC was a decision! Juries are subjective, I realize, but including one book over the other says to the reader that one is better than the other, whether that's intentional or not. Anyways, I'll look forward to seeing your reactions tomorrow! I'll be online looking for reactions all day long. Christmas in July, indeed! Also, just curious about the costume you're wearing. Are you playing a character or something? I might be missing an inside joke. Fun though, if your character is supposed to be a "harlot"!
Thanks for watching and welcome! You make very good points. I don't always love or even like Booker books (I want all the hours I spent listening to In Ascension back...lol), but I always find each list and each jury interesting. I'm currently editing a longest reaction video, and it will be out shortly. I hope you are enjoying all the longlist reactions! As for my outfits, I enjoy dressing up for videos, as well as wearing items that have a vintage and/or historical vibes. I can't resist an opportunity to get dressed up, put on red lipstick and talk books! Happy Booker season to you!
I like what you're saying about James. I loved that book, but for one, you can never be certain with a longlist; there is never a guarantee for a nomination when you have a jury with its own subjective preferences. There is also not that objective legitimation for any book, not James, and also last year not Demon Copperhead or Birnham Wood (I didn't like either of them, by the way). Plus, as you say, it may not be the typical Booker book. I think James will win prizes, but the National Book Award and especially the Pulitzer may feel more likely.
Thank you! I loved James as well, and I hope it wins all the prizes, it just doesn't give me Booker vibes! Thanks for watching. Tomorrow is going to be so exciting!
I have reservations about another E Strout nomination. The panel will want to see something different and we know with ES that you get excellent writing but kind of the same. Not branching out, experimenting, doing it a bit differently/ unexpected.
That's a very interesting way of looking at ES! I wasn't a big fan of Oh William! until Lucy By the Sea came out, and explains their relationship so much better. And too many "Oh William"'s, I felt like I was being beaten over the head with her exasperation. One more day!
James will be there. It has so many original literary devices going on that makes it a contender. Good about Chigozie Obioma and 'Choice' both predictions. I saw all three in person on their book tours 👍👍👍
Wow...you saw all three of them!!! One could only be so lucky!
I'm halfway thru Orbital and enjoying it. A unique to me storyline. I recently finished James. Loved it. Thanks for introducing books I haven't heard of yet. And I like the list to be full of new books also. P.S. I was too late to the knitting advent sign up. I loved that concept and didn't know it existed until I saw it on your channel. Hope to get in on the short story advent set.
I will put Orbital on my TBR list! Thanks for the tip! It's not too late to sign up for a knitting advent calendar. I haven't pre-ordered one yet, but when I do, I will put out an announcement, and perhaps some viewers would like to knit along and read along. I will also make an announcement when the short story advent calendar is available for purchase. It's going to be a great year!
I'll be reading with you! I LOVE your video!
Thank you so much! I can't wait for Booker season to begin! I will make sure to announce which book I will be reading next (and first), so if you want to read along with me, you will have that option! Happy reading!
@@Thebookerharlot Awesome! Thanks so much! ❤☺
I've been thinking that Orbital by Samantha Harvey could be on it, I've almost finished it on audiobook. It has an interesting premise and is pretty well delivered. Scott at Gunpowder and Plot has said it's one on the leaked list, who knows? Praiseworthy by Alexis Wright is one that I really want to be on the list, it's Booker winning material IMHO but the leaks are saying it didn't make the list... again, who knows if the leaks are right? I guess we'll find out. Another one that is really worth reading is My Friends by Hisham Matar, it's a brilliant book, one of the best books I've read this year. It should have lots of recognition, it' just that good, even if it doesn't make the booker list.
Everyone seems to be talking about Orbital! I had My Friends on my list as well, thanks for the recommendation. I saw the leaks and decided not to pay them any attention because it was wrecking my fun in guessing and it's all conjecture. Here are some of the books I hope to see on the list, that I didn't put on my video because they are all brilliant writers with new books coming out: Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange The Echoes by Evie Wild Parasol Against the Axe by Helen Oyeyemi Private Rites by Julia Armfield Little Rot by Akwaeke Emery The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich Intermezzo by Sally Rooney Happy reading and Booker book season!
@@Thebookerharlot I'll definitely be reading The Echoes, it's waiting at the library for me and Private Rites is another I might pick up from the library. I'll wait to see what others think of the rest. I did really like There There by Tommy Orange but I'm not yet drawn to his new one.
I agree with you. I always prefer to have a list of unknown books (to me) so I canexperience new books.
I thought I would love The Wren, The Wren… but for some reason it just wasn’t for me. 🤷♀️ Looking forward to reading Brotherless Night!
There’s a lot of mixed reviews about The Wren, The Wren, but good for you for reading it! I hope you enjoy Brotherless Night as much as I did, and grab some tissues! 📚 🙏 😊
My list differed a bit from yours, but I was thrilled that my favorite of the list won.
It was a great shortlist and a fantastic winner! 🏆 📕 🙏
Well done Kim!🎉 I appreciate your perspective. And I want to meet Sashie - better read the book.
Grab a box of tissues! I cried several times while reading Brotherless Night! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! 🙏 😊 📕
Enjoyed this video and your reaction. I have Crooked Plow on my TBR and look forward to reading it after hearing your thoughts. 🙂
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy Crooked Plow as much as I did! 🙏 📚 😊
I agree with most of your thoughts on the WP books, except for Hangman (maybe because I read a physical copy). I know I'm in the minority, but I really enjoyed it and plan to reread it once I've completed the fiction and nonfiction lists. I did not care for Restless Dolly Maunder, but I will take your advice and try another of Kate Grenville's books.
Hangman seems to be one of those love it or hate it books! I have read some great reviews of it, it’s just not for me. The magic of books! Kate Grenville is such a wonderful writer. I hope you enjoy her previous work! 📚 😊 🙏
I DNF’d Hangman too. It was too absurd. Also, just wondering if you ‘read’ most of your books on audio?
According to Story Graphic, I read 80% physical books. I have been procrastinating listening to audiobooks, which is why I have three left to listen to (I also can’t get a hold of Soldier, Sailor before the winner is announced because it was just published in Canada, so audio it is!) 🙏 📕 😊
I bailed on The Maiden halfway. It felt superficial as in silly. 😉
Superficial and silly , I totally agree!!! 👍 🙏 😆
Love the show, I think your knitting is beautiful. Please show more. ❤
Thank you very much! 🙏 😊 🧶 📚
I hated The Wren! Slow, convoluted and too much time spent on the daughter’s sex life which was boring.
It is a slowly paced book! My favourite from the Women’s Prize is In Defence of the Act and it didn’t make the short list! Happy reading and book prize season! 📚 🙏 😊
Crooked Plow was my favorite too! Disappointed it didn’t win…
Me too, but if it wasn’t for the Booker I never would have read it, let alone heard of it! Happy reading! 📚 🥂 🙏
I should add I finally read A Little Luck by Pineiro. 😊 Not quite as good as Elena Knows IMO with regard to pacing, but worth reading for sure.
Thanks for letting me know! I will definitely be reading it this year! 📕 🙏 😊
Kairos is not calling me, so I think I’ll skip it. But I did really enjoy Visitation by Erpenbeck. The the lovely thing about prize lists is discovering new books and backlists!
Yes, I totally agree with you. Kairos was a weird win. Everyone expected it to win, but I never heard any glowing reviews, just problematic ones. Happy reading! 📖 😃 📖
I still love Crooked Plow.
Me too!!! Thanks for watching and happy reading! 📚 😊 🙏
I'm addicted to your videos ❤️ I haven't read shortlist yet because in my country India these books release very slowly but this time all the six books looks interesting super excited to read them all.
Thank you so much! I’m glad that the shortlist is available to you. I have struggled, in the past, to get the books too. I’m glad that this is, slowly, changing. Happy reading, it’s a great list! 📚 🏆 🙏
Thank you
Thank you for watching! Happy reading! 🙏 📕 😊
