    See quite a few guys carrying pickhead axes in this video, pretty cool to see. Is the pickhead the preferred axe in Philly? My state you rarely see anyone with Pickheads. The little differences on what is carried by guys in different parts of the country is interesting. LA everyone carries a pickhead I believe

    • @jesseosada4690
      @jesseosada4690 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@stephenjake2021 Yea I love the traditional fire axe. Its my favorite to bring to the roof. Some of the flat roofs in our city are 4-5 inches thick, so the pick is great for pulling up roofing material after you cut a hole. I guess some of the newer styles of ax will probably work if you have newer construction dwellings or pitched/peaked roofs, but most of Philly is comprised of old rowhomes. I grab the flathead axe and marry it with the halligan for forcible entry though, the flathead gives you a striking tool combined with a blade that you can use to chop through a door if needed and also doubles as a wedge to gap the door.

    Does the first due Engine make the stretch for the 2 due Engine, then back them up on the line? Curious to know if that is the SOG for rowhouses in Philly?

    • @jesseosada4690
      @jesseosada4690 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rgc3900The first due engine tries to get in front of the building if possible for quicker deployment of a preconnected attack line, then the driver will charge the line and stretch back to a hydrant for supplemental water supply. This gives them 500 gallons for a quick knock down until a hydrant is obtained. If the street is too narrow, the driver will get as close as possible and try to get the hosebed facing the fire. Then they carry the bag(usually 3 or 4 lengths of 1& 3/4" attack line) and pull 3" hosline near the front of the dwelling and connect out front. The 2nd due engine does the same but also helps the first due engine establish a supplemental water supply either by helping them connect to a hydrant or they will give them water through their engine if they are already hooked up to a hydrant. 2nd due engine attack line is usually stretched to the rear of the dwelling but they may go to the front depending on the nature and conditions of the job or if ordered by the chief.

    I dont get it. I am a forefighter in the netherlands and we use antiventilation. Get minimal oxygen flow to the fire close everything so the fire will go partly out by itself. Why do you guys increase oxygenflow? It onpy makes it burn harder, faster and hotter.

    • @jesseosada4690
      @jesseosada4690 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jasperkramer5693 If you study fire behavior or fire dynamics, it will show how it is beneficial. From experience we know from trying to enter a room that is on fire and opening the tip (nozzle) and flowing water into an unventilated room, you create steam and you disrupt the thermal layer in the room. If there is nowhere else for this heat and steam to go then it pushes back onto the firefighters who are trying to extinguish the fire. This causes steam burns and could possibly push the fire over their heads and out into the hallway. We do our best to coordinate our ventilation and break windows as the engine company is opening the tip so that the steam and intense heat goes out the windows instead of back onto the firefighters. The fire will burn hotter for a few seconds as oxygen enters the room but will go out much faster and not push back on the engine company as water is applied. In the case of an exterior (defensive) attack, taking out the windows allows water to be flowed inside to try to knock down the fire.

      Philly = Aggressive interior attack. Jasper, we won't ventilate until water is in place. Double house, no problems the engine and ladder Stationed together. Single house is only an engine. We waited for a ladder so we got inventive. Sometimes the driver would throw up the 24' extension ladder. Carried D cell batteries to break windows. Or most often, tipman and officer move to fire, backup man vents with the Halligan bar. Engine. 51, 72, 47 and L12.

    • @jesseosada4690
      @jesseosada4690 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes most of our dwellings are rowhomes with flat roofs built over 100 years ago. They have multiple layers of roofing material overtop wood planks so when the fire spreads through the walls and ceilings it is often inaccessible through the interior even when the plaster & lathe or drywall ceilings are pulled. So we look for signs of direct fire impingement and cut back the roof there to ensure there is nothing smoldering inside that would rekindle the fire.

    • @jesseosada4690
      @jesseosada4690 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depending on the size/quantity of fire, the commanding officer will place certain companies 'in service', while other arriving companies stand by just in case. So for a full box dispatch they send 4 engines, 2 ladders and 2 battalion chiefs. Upon arrival, companies will be placed in service as needed. Usually the first in (first due) engine, and the first in ladder will go in service for small fires or investigations, or it could be 2 engines, 2 ladders, 2 chiefs or even more for bigger fires. So an engine that's in service will stretch attack hoseline, connect to a hydrant, spray water, etc. A ladder that is in service will search for victims, force entry, ladder the building, ventilate and overhaul. Other companies not in service are on standby

    0:45 There is an engine there already with a line pulled. Before anyone takes the TIME to get fully dressed, tank water should have been flowing through those windows to stop combustion and the threat it creates for the property, any victims inside and the entering firefighters. Those flames are attacking the second-floor windows and the soffit that is the gateway to the attic. Did they not lay-in because there is a hydrant nearby? People die in seconds, not minutes. Containers of flammable liquid explode in seconds, not minutes. Firefighters get hurt and killed in seconds, not minutes. Everything bad happens Now, not latter. Which means, if you want to do your job correctly, you have to think and plan ahead and then act quickly and safely. Combustion is the route of all evil at a fire. Stop it and the byproducts go away. 1:00 This is ridiculous! If he used a tight cone of water and started at the floor and swept it across the room and then raised it and covered the entire room in another sweep, he could have knocked down all the fire in that room in the same time that it took him to use a straight stream of water that didn't stop it. 2:20 I would love to know why the camera person bothered to show up. Just to record or did he plan to go to work? 2:30 The smoke must have smelled good for him not to mask up before he exposed himself to it. Don't they discuss the risk of cancer, during training? Will that hose/ladder conflict pose a problem in the future? Who set that ladder? 3:00 Actually, Breath Taking. You don't need training to know what to do here, you just need to use a little common sense and logic, have a sense of responsibility and respect for your family who will need to nurse your sorry ass when you get lung cancer. Now here's a though that makes this even worse. Where are the Officers who are allowing this to happen? 3:23 Now let's just stop and think here for a moment. They have been in there a LONG time now and there is a fire right in front of everyone. Did they ignore it and climb to the second floor and leave a fire burning under them? Let's say you wanted to clean your chimney by climbing up it. I know, bad analogy but wait, there's a point. Would you do it with a fire in the firebox?

      VVing is the single most ridiculous tactic every devised. Because "Heat Rises?" All the time" In every situation like when there are many sectioned off rooms and various pressure locations? When the attic has thick insulation or a floor or stored materials or they can't reach the ceiling, or it is plaster and latte or the ceiling hole isn't the right size to allow enough heat and smoke to flow or the hole is in a room with the door closed to the hallway or the hole is over little Johnie's bed and you are drawing the heat and smoke over him orrrrrrrr! How about you find the fire room from the exterior, break out the windows and soak the room with tank water? The temperature will drop by 1000 degrees once the flames are gone, and you can further cool the gasses with a fog of water. All before the entry team can be assembled, get fully dressed, (Did you pay attention here?), and get the door open. Long before the roof ladder can even be set.

      @@roofgoof132 When you arrive you prioritize. You look for evidence of burning material. Examples, the garage is burning, or flames are pouring out of windows or even, heavy smoke is pouring out of one area of the house. You pull a line to that location while the engineer activates the pump. Break out the windows and soak the burning material with tank water. You can accomplish that without being fully dressed and long before an entry team can be assembled, get fully dressed and get the door open for an offensive attack. Then you break out more upper windows to vent smoke and cool it with w fog of water. By the time the team gets the door open, you have PROTECTED any victims, the property and the entering firefighters.

    Once again, another stupid firefighter not using masks. And stupid is a soft word! Why man? You have the tools to protect yourself, but no, in your crazy mind you're a tough dude. Wait my friend, one day you might regret badly your irresponsibility towards you and those who love 💕 you deeply. Please, it's really time for you and your brave colleagues to think about it and realize once and for all that yes, your health is extremely important and that you must perform in this fantastic profession as safely as possible with all the tools at your disposal. May God protect you all! 🚨🚒 🇨🇦 🇺🇸

      It's called being a Two-Dimensional Reactor. He sees a need and runs to it. A Three-Dimensional Thinker, plans ahead and considers safety and efficiency and then acts to accomplish the same objective. You can do all that in the same time period if you think outside the box and Plan Ahead!

      2/2 I was 2nd in Engine dispatched 1st, chief sent us to rear because we second in to that local. I ready to enter front and take 2nd floor.. 1st in tip fell down steps and they didn't get a good knock on 1st floor , we came in rear and knocked kitchen and dining room down with it lit back up you can see the air getting sucked in over the pack guy ar door feeding it and it took off.. it was still in the ceiling all over. A mayday actually went out.. if chief would have let us goi in right behind 1st in company they could have had 1st floor and held steps or they could have went upstairs and gave us down stairs.. just like when you clear a room in combat you flow off 1st guy in stack. If that job was middle of block and chief made us go to rear we would have taken alot longer to stretch back there and when tip guy fell down steps and lost two people would have got hurt.. you can here thoer pack guy screaming " where 45s" that's us.. we came in and knocked rear and dining room down when it took off again. I heard mayday, did not have time to put hood on or my gloves I just went in and knocked it down to back them up after mayday went out. Got some burns on back of neck.
