Jez's Acoustic Guitar Songbook
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 ม.ค. 2016
I’ve always loved the kind of song that stands up for itself when played on one acoustic guitar. Those are the kinds of song you’ll find here.
If you'd like to learn to play any of the songs you see me performing, or strum and sing along with me, then you can download song sheets (containing lyrics and chords, and sometimes TAB) for my videos from my songbook blog: jezquaylesongbook.home.blog/guitar-songs/ Let me know if you can't find a song sheet for one of my videos and I'll put that right.
Take it easy ...but take it!

Stand By Me - Ben E King / John Lennon - Acoustic Guitar Cover - Jez Quayle
If you'd like to learn this song or strum along with me, a song sheet containing the lyrics and chords I play can be viewed or downloaded from my songbook blog here: jezquaylesongbookhome.files.wordpress.com/2023/06/stand-by-me-in-c-with-capo.pdf
I first heard Stand By Me when it was recorded by John Lennon back in the mid 1970s. His version is great, but Ben E King's original recording is an absolute masterpiece. The same four-chord progression (i - vi - iv - v) is played over and over throughout the song, but listen to that changing arrangement, the gradual build up, and that beautiful, soulful voice! And of course, those moving lyrics!
King wrote 'Stand By Me' together with the prolific and extremely successful songwriting duo, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. When he first released his recording in 1961 it reached #1 on the US Billboard R&B chart and #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. When it was re-released in 1986 (on the back of the success of the film of the same name -- which was based on a Stephen King story) it reached #1 on the UK singles chart and #9 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Ben E King and John Lennon sang it in A, which is too high for my singing range, so I've transposed the song down to D (C with capo on 2nd fret).

Leaving on a Jet Plane - John Denver - Acoustic Guitar Cover - Jez Quayle

John Denver wrote and first recorded 'Leaving on a Jet Plane' in 1966. Originally, he named it 'Babe I Hate to Go' though. Whilst it's one of his best known songs, when he released it as a single in 1969 it failed to make the charts. Peter, Paul and Mary, who were close friends of John's, recorded a cover version for their 1967 album, 'Album 1700'. They also released it as single in 1969, reach...

The Sound of Silence - at The Riverside - Jez, Kay & Tony

We recorded our rendition of this great Simon & Garfunkel song outdoors at The Riverside pub in Ilkley (West Yorkshire, England). It was a rather cold and blustery day, so you can hear the sounds of the wind and the river ...and a few birds too! Not the most comfortable playing conditions, but I think we coped okay. Thank you Maureen for the camerawork!

Awesome
It became my daily exercise. Thank you Jez!
That’s good to know. 😊👍 I’m glad you found this useful - Jez
Very easy version, thank you. (I always expect everything to be more complicated)😊
Hi Christine. This isn’t a simplified version. I transposed the key down to suit my singing range though. Lots of old rock n roll style song are played with only 3 or 4 chords. It’s more about the rhythm and feeling of the songs, rather than complexity. Glad you found this useful - Jez
Thank you for this beaut😢 video.😊
Thanks very much Kathleen! Glad you enjoyed it.
Lovely job, mate.
Thanks very much!
Beautifully played, emotionally sang, and material is very helpful in learning. A must record in my list. Thank you Jez!
Thanks very much! I’m glad you found this helpful.
could you tell me the chords being used
This song is hard and light. I wish you could show a lesson:]
I prefer g , c , d , em .
Good chords! 👍
Over twenty years with my guitar and I never quite picked up how Woody Guthrie did it. I could make it sound close but something always sounded a bit off to me. I just happened to stumble upon your video today and now I’m getting Woody’s sound exactly right. In some cases, nothing will ever beat a simple demonstration. Thanks for the breakdown.
Thanks very much! I’m glad you found this helpful - Jez👍
I like this ❤
Thanks very much!
Lovely Jez, Like has been said, love the ringing E string in this arrangement & your phrasing. I’m still learning stuff off your old stuff. Catching up with “FairyTale NY” & found this. Merry Christmas 2024
Thanks very much Lawrie! And a very merry Christmas! Glad you like this one. I’ve not played it for a while. Is Fairytale of New York popular down under? It’s one of my fave Christmas songs.
Wow I love this song and you did a great job covering it with your own bit of flair. Well done!!
Thanks very much Jim!
Best
Thanks Sojie!
Brilliant. A key I can actually hope to sing it in! Thanks for sharing!
What chordsiz the and pattern
Hello. Can you share the tabs and chords for us?
Election night 2024 I came across this video that brought me back to 1968 and I sat down and learned this song that reminds me so much of the power of that time when a song like this could inspire a generation to stand up for peace.
Great work!
Thank you!
Nice job!
Thanks very much!

Thanks very much Harry! Greetings from England.

Very useful, thank you
Thanks very much!
Excellent tuition!
Thanks very much!
This was my grandmother's favorite song. My dad often played it at family gatherings, since he passed in 2022, now it's my turn to keep on ramblin' for them. Thank you! <3
I’m pleased this brought back some good memories. Happy ramblin’! - Jez
I have seen this song played and it goes on for about 8 minutes or something. My old friend Barry Whiteland, he passed away when I was younger but he was an amazing guitarist and could play any style, he even taught me about different tunings like dadgad and others and slide but he played this song and it seemed to have many more verses, is that right or am I remembering it wrong?
These the only verses that Buffy Sainte-Marie (the writer) and Donovan sang on their famous recordings. I’ve never heard any other verses myself. Maybe your friend added some of his own?
@@JezsAcousticGuitarSongbook Maybe he did, yeah. Thanks for taking the time to reply :)
wow!
Very nice!
Thanks very much!
Good pickin! Great vids🙏
Thanks very much!
awesome, hey man just starting to learn guitar. The strum pattern is driving me crazy, like i can follow the steps and try and try to learn it, but i can’t seem to replicate you
Thanks very much Joe. Yes, this kind of bass strumming can be a tricky to master. I’d suggest practicing the technique really slowly at first, and build up speed when the action starts to feel familiar and more ’automatic’. This is more or less how Woody himself played, but you don’t have to play this way. A simpler D DU D DU pattern works really well on songs like this one. That’s what I sometimes do if I want to give my hands a break.
@@JezsAcousticGuitarSongbook thanks man appreciate you mightily.
EXCELLENT!!! Great Version of a Great Song.❤
Thanks very much Dave!

Nicely done! Thank you.
Thanks very much!
@@JezsAcousticGuitarSongbook you're welcome - I looked up the chords years ago and maybe it was in a different key, so I avoided the song. After watching/playing along with your video, I got the gist of it pretty quickly. Now comes the remaining 80% effort to get the final 20% :)
Just learned my first Woody tune, something I've been meaning to do for years, from you. Thank you so much!
That’s great to know. Thanks 👍
@@JezsAcousticGuitarSongbook Although it'll take me a while to get it half as smooth as your great medley! By the way, what motivated your choice for the capo?
