Guppy had been down for a little maintenance recently, but she’s back with her starting issues resolved and a few new parts. We're going out from some autorotations in the Enstrom F28F. Come along for a short flight while I try to knock the rust off on my auto skills.

No way my wife would approve if my helicopter shook anywhere near that much. There wouldn’t be a hover, it would end before it started.
Yeah, I found it helped to warn people first! But since then we rebuilt the oleo struts and got a much better track and balance so it is much smoother now! Thanks for watching.

Love ghs video but why can't don't they plant back trees
Most of the pine forests burned by fire will grow back over time. If you hike through an area like that there will be many seedlings that sprout post-fire - if that is what you’re asking.

Hi Chris. Just came across this video and really loved it. Nice how you explain wind patterns. I have been to that area many times and one of my favorite. Hiked all over the Sawtooths. You should fly around those mountains some. I did in a Cessna 210. You must be a very nice guy and what a life. I live in Joseph, Oregon. Check it out on the web and see how beautiful it is here in N E Oregon. The Eagle Cap Wilderness is beautiful. Where do you live. Also, I love southern Utah with all the redrock country. Maybe we could meet at the Joseph airport. Thanks for sharing. You should put more videos on TH-cam like this.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! I love that whole area around the Sawtooths. We made it back to Smiley Creek and Johnson’s Creek last summer along with a few other spots up there. Looking forward to warmer weather to get back again this year! I live in Salt Lake City, flying out of Skypark (BTF). Make it to a few places in S Utah occasionally- Mexican Mountain is great! I may be up your direction at some point this summer- probably in my old Mooney though rather than the Enstrom. Thanks again!

Cool video! Can you put a ski basket on one of those? How about sling loads? Do those enstroms have. Provision for that?
Thanks! Yes, they do make a basket for Enstroms. I’ve never flown with one but they look pretty solid. And you can equip them with a cargo hook. There’s a good video online of an F28F doing Christmas tree collection that is interesting.

Great video, thanks for sharing. I'm in Michigan, my kids live in Salt Lake City and really love it out there and we love to visit the area. I really love the Enstrom and love that is built in Michigan. Did Enstrom survive bankruptcy ? Can you still get parts ? I do not fly, however I'm fascinated with helicopters and all that goes into flying one of these rigs. I was first introduced to helicopters in the 1980s, my boss at a motorcycle shop I worked at designed and built a twin rotor helicopter while I was a mechanic at the shop and getting my engineering degree. I flew in the twin rotor in the late 1980s. Dick Degraw is his name and I believe he considered an expert in helicopters and gyros and rotor head development. I've posted a video that shows some detailed images of the twin rotor. I'm still learning about the complexity of the rotor heads, rigid, semi rigid, teetering and mast bumping. I have flow in an R44 recently (only my 2nd time up, first was in the twin rotor in the 80s) and was aware about the mast bumping that can occur if the rotor is unloaded. I really like the rigid design on the Enstrom, seems more forgiving. Thanks for sharing the details on your Enstrom. Hi Mike, i looked up the video where you shared the images of your friend’s twin rotor- very cool! He had his own little mini K-Max back then. What an interesting project. Enstrom did survive bankruptcy-in fact it was really what needed to happen. They’d been bought out by a Chinese firm that had loaded them up with debt. While the underlying business was profitable, they could not service that kind of debt and survive. So, the fact that they went chapter 7 means the new owner (founder of sweetwater music and an Enstrom flyer) was able to buy debt free. They are making parts and helicopters. Just ordered a new turbocharger from them a couple days ago. Yeah, I like the Enstrom rotor head a lot. Particularly for around here. Flying in windy, mountainous terrain, I like knowing that mast bumping is just not going to happen. FYI the Enstrom rotor head is not rigid though, it is fully articulated. There are hinges to allow each blade to flap up and down. The safety of that rotor head is one of the reasons I wanted to buy an Enstrom. They don’t mast bump and they’ve never had a ground resonance issue either. Thanks for watching and sharing that twin rotor video.

Ironically, Smiley Creek is a tributary to the Frowney River, both of which feed into Moody Lake.

How much did the water level come up after the winter of 22/23??
It came up a little more than five feet on the south end. It has given back about a foot since then from evaporation.

Thank you. Yes all the piston Enstroms are turbocharged. I can pull up to 39” of manifold pressure. Helps a lot!
@@transition4908Am I correct in saying the Guppie, being an older F28, does not have a governor, but does have a correlator? I would love to see more video as like this, where you fly into the same strips that Trent Palmer etc goes into when they go camping in their bush planes. Represent the whirlybirds!
Yes, that is correct. Correlator, no governor. The throttle adjustments you have to make are very subtle. I actually like it because you learn and get a better feel for what is really requiring more power. Also, as someone on here pointed out, it gives you more flexibility- you can run at the bottom of the green if you are just cruising and want to lower your fuel burn, or top of the range if you’re coming in to a spot where you know you’ll need max tail rotor authority for example.

Just out of curiosity, how long does it take you to fly from SLC area to Idaho?
We went to American Falls ID first, then Sun Valley to get gas close to Smiley, then Smiley. A little more than three hours.

I've flown the F28 for a couple years, but without a governor. Does yours have one? I'm down in Idaho Falls area.
Nope, no governor. I believe they just announced availability of a governor for the piston Enstroms at the last HAI. The no governor seems to scare some people away from them, but I find it to be a non-issue once you get used to it. What do you think?
I have flown an Enstrom a few times. I'm not impressed with no governor and such for modern helicopters. I'll stick with more modern helicopters, This helicopter doesn't perform well with a lot of head wind. I have to give you a thumbs down.
Yeah, the governor thing seems to freak people out for some reason. I find it a non-issue. You actually can get a governor for them now, but I won’t bother. As far as performance in a headwind, not sure what you mean, that it’s slow? Yep, pretty slow. If you mean general performance in winds, I’ll take a fully articulated three bladed Heli any day over their two bladed alternatives - nice to not worry about chopping my tail off! But to each their own, have fun flying what you like.
Having learnt on a 300 I think the lack of governmenor is a positive thing. If you fly well then you can use all the green arc very easily to obtain more power.

i wonder how much the maintenance cost for helicopters
It really depends on the helicopter. I also have a 62 year old Mooney, which is a pretty affordable plane to maintain. I would say this helicopter is typically 3-5x the cost to maintain as the Mooney each year. My maintenance costs average $12-15k a year, which includes parts and labor. Most other helicopters, particularly turbine versions, will cost much more. You also have to factor in some expenses like engine overhauls that will be infrequent depending on how much you fly, but also quite expensive.

Wonderful video! I air-played the whole thing on my over-sized big screen TV and had a blast watching it. I have to laugh because 9500 to 10500 feet here on the east coast would put me way, way above the surface and here you are just clearing mountain peaks! At one point it looked like your fuel burn was quite low…always a treat in a thirsty Enstrom. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, it is amazing that those peaks are over two miles up from sea level. Funny you noticed the fuel burn - I wasn’t really doing it this time but one of my favorite things to do while flying in the mountains is following a ridge line with the power way back. The updraft does the work if the winds are right and you can be down to burning half the normal fuel!
Why do you fly left seat?
Left seat is the pilot seat in Enstroms. You can put dual controls in, but only the left collective has the start button. I actually like this because it keeps the collective away from your passengers. You can have three across, with the middle right next to you with no one in the way.

Those lines in the mud could be animals walking forward and backward for a drink from the low water, well done in flying a enstrom my favourite make of helicopter since enstrom started just relooking for a enstrom flight school here in the UK my local company who trained in enstroms only take on people who have there own enstroms which is not everyone I have got 5 hours on my favourite Heli why did I stop money dried up but now ready again, best regards Peter,
I’ve considered the animals possibility and landed to check it out. No tracks! The mystery continues. The water has come up a few feet now so some of it is flooded. I’m going to do a comparison one year later in a few months. Thanks for watching.
Great video, thank you. Considering buying an Enstrom, problem here in the UK, they are becoming extinct, or at least the number of examiners who are allowed to test you
That’s too bad they are rare in the UK now. I know that the Enstrom community in the UK was quite strong at one point. My impression though is that they’re really not bad to work on so I’ll bet you’ll find a mechanic willing to do the work. Examiners though, that’s another issue I suppose. The last time I went flying with Vaughn in his MD500 - we did some low flying over the salt lake bay. It was amazing to see how low it's gotten. I'm curious about the hat... are you thinking of buying a DarkAero kit? I'd love to help you do a build if you ever go that route.
Yeah, it is crazy how low it is! This atmospheric river we have going will hopefully help a little. Flew the other day and the mudflats east of antelope are flooded, which is nice to see. And yep, i put a deposit down on a Dark Aero quite a while ago, but i think it will still be a couple years before they get to me.

Your videos are excellent. As a helicopter pilot, I love see different machines. The Enstrom is an underrated helicopter. I hope that they can find their way with the new ownership. Keep up the fine videos. If you ever have the gumption to do some full down autorotations, I would love to see them from both in and outside of the cockpit.
Thanks Nick! Yeah, they definitely are underrated. I saw that they just received their approval from the FAA to restart production on new ships last week. That heavy rotor is definitely good for some full downs.

Hi Mark, Glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, I’m hoping to do some more soon. At the moment I’m having a leaky main seal and the part is on backorder, so not flying the helicopter much. My starting issues were resolved at my last annual. Ended up having a bad ignition switch, a bad shower of sparks, and bad points in my mags - was amazing that I was actually able to start it that way! Now though it starts almost instantly.
Awesome. I miss those days when I was learning to fly an Enstrom in Colorado.

Check out the 70's made for TV movie Birds of Prey on TH-cam that stared David Janssen. Some great footage of a SA315B Lama being chased by David Janssen in a Hughes 500 thru the Kenecott mine and other parts of Utah.
