Long-term CB125F review after 2 years, just for learners?
I finally got around to reviewing the Honda CB125F after owning and riding it for 2 years over 8800 miles. Obviously it's a great bike for learners, but is that all, or can you keep it and run one as your main bike afterwards? Should you buy a new or second hand one?

Here's how to check and adjust the tension of the drive chain on the Honda CB125F. It's one of the most frequently performed mechanical jobs on a bike. Every rider should know how to do it or have a buddy that can, because you can't take your bike into the garage every few weeks. 00:00 Intro 00:59 Take off covers 01:33 Checking tension 03:11 Loosen axel 03:39 Adjusting 05:15 Wheel alignment 08:...

I can't argue with a single one of your Pros and Cons, I think you've got it spot-on. I've done just shy of 12,500km now, and despite having the 390 Duke along side it, the CB125F is still my bike of choice when I need to make the long distance commute down the freeway towards the city, which is a ~300km return trip for me. Even blasting down the freeway at wide open throttle, the economy of this bike is phenomenal, and I can make that trip with fuel to spare.
The Speedo was well out on mine. Said 72, barely 62. Great bike though, had one to practice before DAS. Got an sv650 now.
honda cg 125 is more fun. A guy is importing cg 125 in UK. look it up.
The bike certainly can! I just love when people underestimate this bike, i learned recently to take off on one wheel, and at stop lights i take off on one wheel, redline second and third gear, third gear is 80kph, not incredibly fast compared to another bike i rode, 650 kawasaki. But it's a fun little bike. To take off on one wheel u just add more gas while releasing the clutch more quickly, not too much gas to burn out the clutch, just about 4-5k rpm and you can go on one wheel for about 3 meters. Very fun
Agree in full with everything said mate, excellent video.
great video thanks
So far there are two mains things that I'm not 100% with mine, the seat IMO is too wide for no reason, although its not a tall bike it would still present a challenge for people who are vertically challenged because it force you to splay your legs too much plus I found it to be a bit uncomfortable after an hour of riding, and the wheels I would preferred that they were 17 inch dia instead of 18, Tire selection seems to be limited or maybe there is a good reason Honda chose to use the 18inch wheels which I can't understand😅
Great video, I bought the same motorcycle to learn on and I saved that much money travelling to work I had it for 10 years. The problem now is finding a bigger bike that is as good. Personally I think they are brilliant.
This was my first bike. Got her brand new (2022) and put 3000 miles on her in 4 months. Part ex-ed her when I got the 650R a few weeks after my DAS, but recently i've been thinking more and more about getting another. Sure, the power isn't there, and I never enjoyed going faster than 50mph on her, but I never worried about going places where I'd never consider taking the 650 (mild offroad/etc.). Apparently with the right tyres, the 125f becomes a really capable off-roader, which is something I'm beginning to value since it can get me to more places.
I'm very tempted to use HEIDENAU k66, so far looks to be promising offroad but when trying to sand up on the pegs it reminds you that it was intended as a road bike, I already used inch risers on the handlebars and moved them about 2mm forward, these improved things a lot but the seat is too wide and the reach for the rear break is a bit difficult.
@@ripmax333 I think I should learn to ride offroad before committing any resource to a dedicated bike to do it on, but I'll look into what you mentioned.
@@233kosta I had a CRF250L and a Beta Alp200 so I had some experience riding offroad, I have also a Triumph Street Twin which I turned it to look like a scrambler (sort off) so I occasionally ride it in very mild offroad so when I stand up on the pegs it didn't felt that bad but to be honest when I trid on the CB125F it was a bit shocking, you will understand when you try a proper offroad machine 😀
@@ripmax333 I believe the guy's exact words were "It'll get you more places than a GS". I'm in no way assuming it'd be remotely as good as a true offroader, but probably better than most heavy ADVs.
You have a range readout…I’m envious, my 500 Hornet doesn’t, and I would’ve liked that feature.
I have a 73 plate, love mine had her for 12 months and have put nearly 5k miles on her, I bought mine for £3050 new for commuting as we wanted to get rid of a car, commuting quickly turned into day trips and pleasure rides, definitely not the coolest looking thing out there but hugely practical, reliable and actually fun!! 100% agree with the negatives, the rear brake being my personal biggest one, steep hill starts require a fair amount of brake pressure to hold her, as with everything in life nothing is perfect but it ticks all the boxes for my needs,
great review Richard i got one after watching your video's i love it.
What tyres you have?
Do you only have an a1 license then ?
No I got a full A license. Just sticking with the 125 for now.
@@richardshephardah ok , I just wondered because it’s not normally a full license holder that holds on to a 125. I know how you feel though, why fix what isn’t broken
Didactic video. The sale of this motorcycle in Australia includes as an accessory a protector that completely covers the chain. In your country do they sell that chain protector? Did you know this chain guard. thank you.
I noticed that on another channel. Seems like a good idea. I haven’t seen it available as an accessory. I wonder if it uses the same bolt holes as the chain guard we have.
In Europe they come without the chain guard, in Brazil it's called with another name but it has also a KickStart.
Thanks! :)
I love mine, CB125f 2023 with 12k km, what a machine, enjoy it so much commuting to work or weekend curves at montain.
That’s a lot of miles for a year! Thanks for watching - hope there’s something useful here.
Mine is a 2016 model, bought it from new, looked after it well over the years, and it currently sits at just a bit over 60k on the clock. I don't think I'll ever sell it. Only changed spark plugs, oil, tyres, chains, sprockets, front brake pads, (the back ones are still factory), 2 stator coils and a set of clutch rings. Armed with hammerite high temp, exhaust looks black as new. I also love that the break system is not linked. It still runs fine and starts the first time I press the ignition button. It's used on a daily basis and next summer I plan to open up the engine for the first time, document it and probably replace the piston and the cylinder. Performance is not as it used to be anymore, and 60Mph is not that easy to get to anymore either. Reliability wise, however, I cannot fault this bike, it's a keeper!
What a nice little bike you have , For many years now I've been thinking about upgrading my humble cg125 which has carried me for over 72k of trouble free riding however nowhere near as fuel friendly as your bike i managed to get around 100mpg ish , probably keep the cg125 and treat myself to a newer cbf125 not sure how the long term will stack up certainly the newer cbf125 has some big shoes to fill against the cg125 but I'm sure it would fine being a honda .
There’s a dilemma. You’re obviously plenty experienced with the 125. If you can keep both that’s nice. Not sure what I’d do otherwise!
Great video and a great bike. I just paid £2550 for mine new. 74 plate. As you say, I’ll sell it in a year when I’ve passed my test for at least that amount. My only gripe, the gear shifter is in an awful position. I have Daytona boots and cannot get them under the shifter You can only really raise it one spline or shifting up hits the engine casing. I totally agree with loud exhausts. I personally don’t like them.
Good point! That’s something I meant to say but forgot. It’s not very adjustable. Just the suspension preload. Other bikes have adjustable levers and controls and things.
@@richardshephard It’s an inconvenience but still a great bike. If it’s good enough for the Taliban, it’s good enough for me.
Try to make the lever longer but cutting it in two and add a piece of mild steel using 4 small bolts and nuts or if you know someone very good at welding he/she can weld and extra piece, then just spray it.
Thanks for sharing this! I have the same bike and found your video very helpful. One topic that hasn't been covered yet is how to install a USB socket on the bike so that it only activates when the ignition is turned on.
Mine is the Oxford 3 amp one. It’s always on but there are some electronics in there that only take a few mA when not in use. I’ve left it for weeks without discharging the battery. I did hear of a switched 12v lead near the battery but I couldn’t find it.
GOAT!
The gearbox is so noisy when changing gears, only on mine?
Lol, it does have a bit of a clunk to it when going down into 1st at a junction. Otherwise I can't say I've noticed.
@@richardshephard for me it's very smooth to first gear, but i find myself putting it in neutral instead of second gear, and the clunking noise when downshifting from 3 to 2
It normal, the problem with this CB125F is a very easy to find Neutral, so when up shifting from 1st to 2nd you need to give it a Nice pull on the gear lever to make sure you go into 2nd, and from 3rd to 2nd you need to be very precise with Rev match, what you can do to help with Rev matching is to adjust the free play on the Throttle, on mine there was to much so I reduced it just a bit just make sure you have about 2mm or maybe a bit more.
@@ripmax333 great advice dudee!! I noticed when rev matching that it's not as big of a clunk noise
Merci encore pour cette video très utile

Have enjoyed your videos, not much around on this model, here in New Zealand ours come with totally enclosed chain, nice and clean...
I noticed that - seems like a good idea.
These repairs are great, I had to use this repair method on a new motorcycle tyre and 12k miles later still no problem. It helps to unload any weight you can when making this repair with a car perhaps Jack that wheel, bike full stand and or remove luggage.
I got the same bike and I need to tighten my chain. When I checked the manual it says 88nm for torque so do I have to set it for 88nm when tightening the axel nut? Seen you’ve set it lower so was wondering
I think I must have got that figure from Nick's Episode. Looking in the manual the ONLY torque values I've got are for the "front/rear turn signal screw" and "licence plate light cover screw" which are both 1Nm. That's really helpful. Thanks for updating.
“I’ve turned into one of those people” - remember that it all starts with posting a little bit of Latte art on Facebook😮
Enjoying the videos, you seem to have a great mix of content, perhaps some tips on editing, how to record clear audio when riding, what kit to have for making videos, camping, and clothing without spending a fortune, the odd day out video...when and if you are thinking of changing your bike, what style of bikes you prefer.....
Great ideas, thanks. I often think of changing the bike, but keep coming back to this one!
Thanks again looking forward to more material cheers
Really enjoyed this thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Very useful! I own the same bike
I like the ‘Floataway service station! 😂
Another comprehensive and useful video Richard. Id find a video on how to replace the back tyre of the motorbike very useful if possible please!
Thanks! I've wondered about that. Wouldn't dream of replacing a car tyre, but on a bike maybe I could. There are videos out there so I'll have a look before the time comes.
Really helpful video. More like this! Having taken the cover off how did you clean your front sprocket?
Must admit I haven't yet! I'd scrape off the grease on the front socket first, then use the Autoglym degreaser and a brush before rinsing off. Will need a few goes I'm sure. I could talk about cleaning and lubricating the chain in a video - that's an idea.
What's the name of the tool you've used to check alignment?
Found it: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09BMY8JPS
As always perfect Richard thank you. have you noticed how loud the gears are when you load the engine ?
Thanks for watching! I can't say I'd noticed the gears particularly, but the whole thing certainly sounds like it's working hard at top speed. I guess on a bigger bike you just wouldn't get to top speed as easily as on this.
When I check the tension I always move the rear wheel to check tension at more than one point of the chain. Chains don't wear evenly along its length.
Good idea, thanks! I forgot to say check in the middle of the section, as that will deflect the most.
Very thorough and informative. I'm looking to get the same bike after my CBT, so all these videos are super helpful 👍
Great, and thanks for watching! I'm working on a general review of the bike, but it should take more than a week this time.
U r really almost perfect on these kind of videos bro, thanks a lot..
Another really good video Rich thank you Ride safe mate
Excellent job.
Excellent presentation Richard -- thanks. When the time comes for a new chain and sprockets a DID X-ring set will give you many miles of no adjustment.
thanks! With the price of Honda parts I do wonder if you can get better for the price. Let me know if you have a model number - seems people have had trouble finding the right one.
It is useless to put chains for superbikes on these small machines, the only meaning is if you ride in dust and spin. From my experience, sealed chains don't last any longer and for a weak bike they only have unnecessarily high resistance and reduce performance, better quality HD chain without a seal and clean and lubricate properly.
@@danocholi Good point, paying more upfront doesn't let you off the hook for maintenance. I could do a short video about cleaning and lubricatin g the chain. Thanks!
Ive just done a trip on my cb125f like yours from Manchester to portugal wild camping. Around 4k. The bike never let me down. I came off at on a roundabout in the rain at Bordeaux so the skinny tyres made me nervous in the rain thereon but a brilliant little bike.
What an amazing trip. Sorry to hear about the spill - glad you're ok.
Sir, Namaste from India, How frequently should engine oil be changed? for SP 125? i'm planning to buy :)
The manual says it should be changed after the first 600 miles with a new filter. Then change the oil after 4000 miles or each year. Change the filter too after 8000 miles.
@@richardshephard thank u sir
I have a Bajaj Pulsar 220 and planning to By CB 125 ( in india it is called SP 125) for short tour (500 - 1000 km ) and it will give 65 kmpl and service cost under 10 USD. this bike is really value for money.
Sounds good. Have fun!
Last year I toured to Zürich. Glad I took the channel tunnel, lot less of a faff than a ferry. Worst case price was £133, which includes completely flexible departure time & lounge access.
Sounds good - I'd like to take the tunnel next time.
@@richardshephard Has its ups & downs. No passenger seating, but you get to chill on/with the bike for half an hour, so no need to unpack anything.
