    What specifically did Tesla replace on the suspension on your car? Model 3s do have some front suspension issues.

    • @edfessler

      My documentation comments state they replaced Upper Control Arms, Lateral Links, and Compliance Links on both sides.

    • @snowrocket
      @snowrocket 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@edfessler Thanks for the response. Wow, that's essentially everything except the spindle that holds the bearings and brakes. The upper control arms get the infamous "dry squeak" from the ball joint lacking lubrication. The ball joint CAN be lubed a bit ON the car, so replacement is not needed immediately. Of the two lateral links on the bottom, the rear one on each side is prone to going bad. It seems it's mostly the inboard rubber bushing pivot point of it that cracks and goes bad. I personally doubt that you needed ALL of that at one time, however replacing any of it means it's probably a good idea to get an alignment. The fact that they did ALL of it means you're probably set for quite some time.

    WOW! Ed, you are a genius. Either that or you got tired of constant winter care of your pool. That's where I am as a first time pool owner. We inherited the pool when we moved to our present house. And the learning curve has been steep. Caring for it during the summer months was trying enough and I was constantly skimming, vacuuming and chemically caring for it. Then the season ended and we decided to cover it. The suggestion I had from my pool man seemed great, but the actual workings of it failed. Long story short, I am still constantly at the pool in all temperatures pumping out pockets of water and readjusting and tightening things to keep it taut. It will be a continual task, I'm afraid. So, I will invest in your method for the next season in hopes that I can stay in where it's warm and simply smile at the nice pool cover instead of the usual groaning at mess it is now. Thanks!!

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! I did get tired of fooling with my pool during the winter. Now I just make sure the drain is clear from time to time. I don't have a lot of debris during the winter other than pine needles, so not too bad. But I won't argue with your other labels for me. LOL Good luck next year!

    Thanks for the video. I see 11700 extra gives reliability/freedom to fill anywhere. I have a Lexus ES350 at 141k miles. I am a DIY guy, so do oil change brakes myself, and still today, it has 100% tank of gas. There are pros and cons. It depends on what people prefer. I prefer DIY over the dealer. Also add Tesla insurance, tire cost. Also add every 3 to 4 uear coolant flush .so if you see big 5 year picture it is not that difference but with gas car especially diy cars like 2020 or older lexus it is the reliability which wins. Gas u can find any where and take 5 min to go 0 to 100. Parts are cheaper. Tires and insurance are cheaper. I like FSD though. If one day I buy an EV it has to have a reliable with all bugs fixes done in next 5 year or so. That is the only attraction for me

    • @edfessler

      That’s cool doing service yourself. I have been working on stuff all my life, so I try to avoid working on cars now if I can. :-) My insurance on my Tesla Model 3 is less than $100 a month. I am not sure how that compares to a comparable car anymore as I used to drive a Prius (Totally different car) and insurance rates have gone up across the board drastically since I insured my Prius. I have had the car for 6 years now. I have not done a coolant flush. Can’t say I plan on it. :-) As far as comparing to a gas car that fills up in 5 minutes. For day to day driving it does not even take 5 minutes, since you do not have to stop at the filling station at all, you just plug in when you get home which takes 10 seconds. Also, no chance of getting your credit card skimmed. When on trips, you may only take 5 minutes to fill, but don’t you have to use the restroom? Maybe get a drink or snack? Sometimes you may even want to get an actual meal. I plug my car in and go to the restroom and get whatever I need. If it takes 10 to 15 minutes for this, many times that is all the charge I need to get to the next stop. The reality for me is that 95% of the time the car is ready before I am. And if I am actually sitting down for a meal, even fast food, there is no way you can complete the meal before the car is finished charging. So basically charging time is a non-issue for me. I love not ever stopping by the filling station. I know that sometimes people choose cars based on finances, what they can afford and what they can easily get their hands on. That is all cool. But aside from that, I believe you should drive what you love. Whatever kind of car that happens to be. :-)

    Any ICE car that gets 30 mpg is NOT going to have the performance that car gives. You should have compared something more like a Dodge charger or BMW M3, or Infiniti Q50, etc. None of these cars would get close to the 100+ MPGe that this car achieves.

    • @snowrocket
      @snowrocket 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's absolutely true. Granted my 2011 Nissan Altima 2.5 S is old, but it gets 30 MPG on 87 octane at 70-77 MPH on the highway. It's 175 HP, FWD. Probably 0-60 MPH in ~9-10 seconds, 117 MPH top speed. It's good enough, but it's no sports sedan. MOST faster cars of the same size get worse gas mileage/need higher octane gas. I rented a 2018 model 3 Long Range Dual Motor as a "long term test drive". 0-60 in 4.4 seconds, listed top speed is 144 MPH. Except for liking my Nissan's dashboard FAR more, I thought the Tesla was better in most ways. I'll probably buy a used Model 3 soon.

There are tons of things that could go wrong, which is a lot of money. I own 2 Teslas, and one gas sports car. Depreciation comparison?

  • @markmeridian3360
    @markmeridian3360 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Bogus analysis. The cheapest price for electricity in the U.S. is 12 cents per kWh. You used 10 cents. The national AVERAGE price for gasoline is $3.02. You used $3.50. So you used a gas price above the national average and an electricity price below the cheapest in the U.S. What else are you fudging? Did you use the efficiency in miles per kWh that the car reports or did you actually measure how many kWh you actually put in? You do know that there is a difference, don't you? The car doesn't count the efficiency loss in charging, that's usually about 5%. Did you use the actual measured range or what the car reports? The actual range of a Tesla on the highway at a steady 70 mph has been shown to be 80% of what Tesla claims. That's one of the things that the U.S. Justice Department is currently investigating Tesla for - a rigged range algorithm - look up "Justice department investigating Tesla for inflated range claims".

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are mistaken on the cheapest price for electricity. Check the following document for Shelby Energy Cooperative electric rates. www.shelbyenergy.com/rates-services. It is quoted at $0.08960 per kwh, and I rounded up to $0.10 for taxes. However, there is a clause below that rate quote that says it is a Net rate, and that the Gross rate is 10% higher. My mistake I did not notice that before. So I would revise my estimate to $0.11 per kwh. I had to use the rate stated on this documentation since I could not use actual price on my bill since I have solar. As I said many times in my video, you can plug in any price per gallon you wish to get the most accurate numbers for your situation. Some people have to use Premium fuel, which is much more expensive that what I quoted. I did use the kwh that the car reported. Another user pointed this out that there would be some energy loss, and that is something I should have included in my calculations. I have taken actual measurements on this and I have determined that you could probably add 10% to my numbers for this. The predicted range that is displayed on the screen is irrelevant since I am using what is actually used, not what is estimated before I drive. However, since I drive at pretty reasonable speeds, I can very easily get the range displayed on the car. So bottom line is that you have made a couple good points, and I did make a mistake on the rate. So I would say to add a total of 20% to the electric cost I quoted (Electric rate and energy loss). $2815 * 1.2 = $3378 Still pretty good I think.

    • @markmeridian3360
      @markmeridian3360 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@edfessler Still totally bogus. Even with corrections, you used a gas price well above the national average and the cheapest electricity rate in the nation. You would have said that your EV costs are in no way representative of what the average EV owner would expect nor are your computed ICE costs fair. In the U.S., the average EV owner pays 16 cents per kWh for home charging and 40 cents for public charging. With an 80/20 split (home/public, according to the DOE) the average cost of charging to an EV owner is $0.21 per kWh - twice what you claimed for yourself.

    Example to help those interested learn a bit. If your electric bill says you used 3,000 KWH and your electric utility charges .10 cents per KWH your bill will reflect .10 cents times 3,000 for a total of $ 300.00 Keep in mind that most of us now have smart meters on our homes and apts and condos these days.. Snart meters charge based on the time of use... old meters averaged our usages,, Today our smart meters litterally charge us based on our exact uses and the time we used it... thus peak power in middle of day... we may be charged more per KWH... opposite of this is we would be charged less at night during low usage periods.. Example.. charge your car or wash your clothes or run your heater or dryer at 12 noon ... you can expect to be charged a premium ... because you used the power during peak period... If you wash and dry r charge your car at night... especially after 10pm and before 5am.. you will be charged much less.. due to using the power during off leak hours,. Over a long period of time you can save a lot of money by using your power smartly... do your heavy charging and house hold power use at night if you can between 10pm and 5 to 6am to save boats loads of money,.,

    The difference between a kilowatt (kW) and a kilowatt-hour (kWh) is quite significant: Kilowatt (kW): This is a unit of power. It measures the rate at which energy is used or produced. One kilowatt is equal to 1,000 watts. For example, if you have a 1 kW appliance, it uses 1,000 watts of power to operate. Kilowatt-hour (kWh): This is a unit of energy. It measures the amount of energy consumed or produced over time. One kilowatt-hour is the amount of energy used when a 1 kW appliance runs for one hour. For instance, if you use a 1 kW appliance for two hours, it would consume 2 kWh of energy. In short, kilowatt tells you how much power an appliance uses, while kilowatt-hour tells you how much energy it uses over time.

The only thing I have done is used some touch-up paint on a few of the bigger dings from rocks and such, and just try to be good to the car. This may sound strange, but I do believe that driving at more reasonable speeds keeps the paint in better condition. It will lower the speed in which debris impacts the car. Just a theory. :-) But don't be fooled too much, it does have some minor dings and such, I just don't get close enough with the camera for you to see them. :-) I almost added a section on Insurance costs, but decided against it. I have used Progressive, Liberty, and currently Kentucky Farm Bureau. My rates have been pretty reasonable overall, but I have switched a couple times when the rates go up too much. My best advice is to get LOTS of quotes and select the best deal. Get at least 3. I always quote all Vehicles & Home insurance for the best rate. My current KFB insurance was actually the 2nd best price this past time, but it was still good and I thought it might have better customer service compared to the least expensive one I found. I assume being a late 50's male I might get more favorable rates, but I have no actual facts to back up that statement. :-)

    Your cost per kilowatt is very low, not sure what state you are in but here in California, the cost is more like triple your cost, conversely, the cost of gas is about $1 more per gallon. We waited in line to get our 2018 M3, and now has 110,000 miles with no major expenses, knock on wood. Our car is number 10,400, I’m curious what number your car is?

The person I was staying with did not have an air conditioner. She said electricity was too expensive to operate one. I purchased my car in October of 2018. My number is in the low 90,000's . So you got your car way before I did. Congratulations on your M3!

    Yes, thank you for all your information. I am 76 years old now and purchased my Model Y LR last August 2023 - So have the vehicle for a little over a year now - has 2000 miles on it. I only drive the vehicle around town and have the 220 volt outlet for home charging. I don't do any fast expressways or do long trips. Enjoy the vehicle very much and all the features. Hopefully this vehicle will last me the rest of my lifetime of driving. So my Tesla journey begins. I still do have an older ICE vehicle for doing real bad weather or dirty jobs. Note: there are allot of people that hate Elon and Tesla because of this man joining up with Trump and what may happen the next 4 years. I do not like Elon the man either now, but I do like the vehicle and its Features - I will not sell this vehicle. Thanks for the video. Take care.

    So have you had any battery degradation? . I woukd be surprised that you would not loose about 20 percent at 200k . I think we will discover allot when many of these evs are a decade old and really see how they are holding up . Still very good for a new form of transport getting past 100k as you suggested in the past getting to ac100 k was rare . I also think tesla had problems with around your model year with yhe electric drive motors where coolant leaked into them . Not sure if you still have the potential for that defect ?

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler หลายเดือนก่อน

      My battery degradation has been pretty reasonable so far, as I explained in my video. I have not had any electric motor problems, and I really have not heard of anyone else having that type of issue. I have read that the Tesla Model 3 should have about 15% battery degradation after 200K miles according to Tesla. But even 20% as you suggested would not be too bad. We will see how it goes. :-)

      I could be wrong, but I THINK the coolant leaking into the drive motor(s) was an issue with the Model S (and X?). Their drive units are a different design than the ones used in the 3 and Y.

    It's actually worse for a gasoline car than a straight-forward calculation based on miles driven and mpg. A straight-forward calculation based on miles/per kWh can be made with an EV but not as easy for an ICE. An ICE vehicle has to idle whereas an EV does not. So, a more realistic calculation for an Ice vehicle would have to include stop-n-go traffic jams, those 10-minute cold morning warmups, and all the gas consumed at every stop light and stop sign.

    • @snowrocket
      @snowrocket 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you track your gas mileage every tankful like I usually do, you get a pretty good idea of the overall cost. My 2011 Nissan Altima 2.5 ranges from 21-31 MPG. It tends more towards 26-29 for most of my use. Gas prices vary all over the place. Within a 35 mile drive last night I saw $2.99 cash - $3.29 cash or credit. The real way to save "fueling costs" on an EV (versus ICE) is to charge at home on a Level 2 charger. Charging at off-peak charging rates is great if your power company offers that.

    I own a blue 2018 model 3 RWD. Bought it at 75k mi and I'm about to roll over 100k. I've been tempted to trade it in for a model Y (another kid on the way and somewhat my wife's request) but I just can't bring myself to do it. Model 3 has all the space we actually need, and it looks so damn good! I also prefer the Chrome over the black trim in the overall looks of the model 3 versus the Y. I'm hoping for continued use of this car for another hundred thousand miles or so! It's a pleasure to drive, and incredibly convenient. I have had two maintenance issues since I bought it. Super bottle replacement which was $700, and the trim underneath gave out, replace that myself for about $50. The super bottle was redesigned shortly after the 2018 to be more reliable and efficient, and they did put the upgraded model in mine. I'll be tuned in looking for your next update! Thanks!

    I have a tip for you on tire plugging tools. There is a company in California that makes a tool called DynaPlug. I have no affiliation with the company but I can attest to the fact that the plugging tool is far superior to the one you used. The DynaPlug doesn't require the hole to be reamed oversize after removing the object that punctured it. Their "pro" kit includes a tapered aluminum plug to stop the leak once you remove the object and "view" the direction the object entered the tire and a small ribbed wire that you insert into the hole to make sure it is open to the interior of the tire and not obstructed with a steel belt. The "plug" is a piece of vulcanized rubber with an attached sharp brass point on it that is inserted into the tire with the tool. Once it is inserted, you just cut off the excess and you are good to go. It is a permanent repair and good for up to 140 mph and doesn't affect tire balance. You can also use up to 3 plugs in one hole if it is large. I have used this tool for years and carry one in all my cars and especially my Tesla. I highly recommend it. It is available on Amazon for about $67. Used to be much cheaper but has gone up along with everything else. One repair will pay for it. I recommend the "pro" aluminum model since it has all of the accessories included and is large enough to get good leverage when inserting the plug. I really enjoyed your video and insights. I just recently sold my 2013 C6 Corvette Convertible and used that cash to purchase a new 2024 M3 AWD Highland version. I love the car and don't miss the Corvette at all. My wife can also drive it and that is an added bonus. I carried the same plugger along with a small compressor in my Corvette since it also didn't have a spare or run flats.

    You should look at your electric meter while the car is charging. (assuming you’re using very little energy in the rest of your house at the time). Those kW are going to be considerably higher (perhaps 20% higher) than what Tesla shows on their trip meter. Tesla’s Wh/mile does not include all the energy losses for AC to DC charging, and other losses for systems other than propelling the car forward. Their numbers are optimistic and disingenuous. BTW, I’m paying at least three times your energy costs in New England.

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually looked at this when the car was newer. I do not remember specific numbers, but I looked at the kilowatt hours from the meter compared to what the car said was used and the miles travelled. I don't think it was that inefficient. I have not looked at it lately, but I will try to run another test sometime soon to check it out.

    • @BobbieGWhiz
      @BobbieGWhiz หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ I’d be very interested to hear your results. I believe that it’s been well established that there’s a ~10% loss between wall and battery (AC to DC charging losses). Also, if you look at your Tesla app charging stats and compare those to the trip meter on the car itself you can readily see losses between the battery and the wheels. For me that’s another ~10%. I believe you should use the value of the kilowatts from your meter in the same way you measure the number of gallons of gasoline you’re purchasing from the pump in order to determine your true efficiency.

Let’s say I get 3.5mi/kWh, that would be 12mi/dollar. So $2.90 would drive me about 35 miles. That’s similar to an efficient ICE car. My range is up to 40% less in the cold winter weather.
