That looks a LOT like Wonkers, the purple ape from the game "Dreamfall Chapters". There are some slight differences, but I googled for purple ape's/purple ape shirts and I don't see anything else that resembles something close to that face shape anywhere else. The mouth, the eyes and nose placement, the forehead wrinkle, even the white in the face is almost 1:1 here. Very 'can I copy your homework' meme vibes.

To answer your question, yes its actually a lazy cashgrab where they focused on stylized graphics and political ideals to target what they believed to be the majority demographic in the US and what they enjoyed. Unfortunately for them they were tricked by themselves and their side of Twitter that they frequented, as well as tricking their government into believing they will make a lot of money exploiting Americans. It's equivalent to how most foreigners mistake concepts as the social norm and reenact them as if it's how it's done in the culture they're visiting. A good example I experienced was how a refuge got angry at me for some reason, can't remember it was a long time ago, and decided to insult me by telling me to fuck HIS mother. There was no language barrier, he genuinely thought that was the insult and used proper English to scream at me to do that. Whatever or whoever tricked him into believing that was how to insult someone is evil but hilarious.

Video games today are based on Team A who wants a game that everyone will enjoy. Platformer, Adventure, Whereas Team B, will take the "A game that everyone will enjoy" too seriously. "We need the main character to not be a white male. the main character needs to be (Insert any race) woman, along with LBGTQ+ Romance options, who identifies as "They / Them" who has a quirky fashion style. Include Extreme Left political statements. A collage mindset of (Rebel against the government) (Bigot) (and any other buzzwords to that nature) When you make something where the end goal is extreme left diversity first. The aspects of a video game and or movie becomes an afterthought. You made something too diverse. It has a niche group of people that will gravitate towards those beliefs. Thing is when you do to much on personal beliefs in a game or movie. It becomes diluted and unrelatable to the major demographic within the filming and gaming community. We're devoid from practicality by definition. I think the root of the issue stems from the "Hollywood Checkboxes" that evolved into what we now know as "Gamergate" Hollywood did it first. Video games got the same treatment I'd say a decade later. (Roughly 10 years ago today)
