Make a Leather Dress Form Mannequin - Pattern and Tutorial
Make your own leather dress form - either life-size or a small one! This is a great leather crafting project for everyone, from beginner to advanced, although a beginner leatherworker can be somewhat scared by the amount of work involved.
The large mannequin is great for displaying your works (bags, accessories) or just for decoration. The small one can be a great gift for anyone who loves sewing or you can also use it as a jewelry stand. The pattern comes in several formats: PDF A4, US Letter and 24" wide roll for plotters, also includes SVG files for both sizes.

The pattern has stitching holes marked for 5mm stitching irons (both versions).
Measurements of the full size:
Breast: 96 cm (approx. 38”)
Waist: 71 cm (approx. 28”)
Hips: 109 cm (approx. 43”)
Height:
Full size: 70 cm (27.5”).
Small size: 27 cm (10.6”)
What you are gonna need:
Tools:
Knife or scissors, stitching irons, maul or mallet, hole punch, pair of harness needles, waxed thread.
Materials:
Full size: Firm leather, 2-2.5 mm (5-6 oz) thick. You may try to make it out of some softer leather (mine is made with medium hand) but it will keep its shape better when the leather is rather stiff.
Small size: Firm leather, 1-1.2 mm (2.5-3 oz) thick. If using anything heavier than that, you may have to skiff the edges and especially the corners where you’ll have more than 2 layers sewn together to avoid bulkiness.
Some foam for filling.
Hardware:
1 big Sam Browne stud for the small one, and for the big one something to put on top of the neck - I’ve used an awl with short handle. I think it does the job perfectly. Also to keep the neck round you will need to insert something inside of it, I used a glass jar with circumference of 28.5 cm, 29-29.5 might also fit (the radius around 9 cm).
If you want to put it on a stand, you’d need a stand and find the center of weight on the bottom to make the hole for it, or make a laser-cut plywood platform slightly smaller than the bottom. If I make my own platform I will share my design separately for free.

Could this be done with a machine, at least in part? Or definitely a hand project?
As I don't have a machine I can't say for sure but I guess it could even be made out of fabric using some stabilizers and stiffeners and good stuffing. Don't forget to add more for the seam allowances.

Lastly, if I make this out of PU leather or vinyl, should I back it with a stiffner like Ultra Heat n' Bond? You can print it at 96.2%, or I also have the pattern with 5 mm spacing but only in SVG and A1 for now.

The faint but still very audible “awww” of disappointment when I heard “experienced leather working” at the beginning 😂 (for real, what did I expect???) I’ve done pretty much everything I know of BUT sewing… and patterns scare me. But I am so obsessed with this; I think I might buy the pattern and test out my skills with patterning on fabric and also practice leather stitching on scraps I have. My hands and fingers hurt just thinking about it. I’m so glad I stumbled upon your channel. Everything I’ve seen is so amazing!
When talking about firm veg tan in 5.26 minutes into your video. Do you think a Herman Oak Craftsman side 5-6oz veg tan would fit the bill? Or is a saddle firm leather reduced down to 5-6oz what I am needing to get? I am so excited that this pattern is out for sale now. THANK YOU>
I think whatever you like the most will work. I never touched a Hermann Oak but it if works for a chrome tanned it might work for just ANY veg tan!

I cant wait until you release the life size dress form. But I will have to wait until August first to buy it. My attempts to make the Mini Leather dress form one handed has not been successful. I know I will be able to sew a full sized one. More space to work with.

I have to say without the music is so much better. I usually mute other people's videos because of their choice of music that gets annoying. Without the music, I can now listen to how you describe what your process is. Makes it more enjoyable without missing anything! So thankful you got a table too.
