ABOUT THE CHANNEL:
Hi! My name is Mateo, I'm a professional musical theatre composer, splitting my time between Toronto & NYC right now.
On Thursdays on this channel, I post a video analyzing the music theory behind some of the great Broadway musicals of all time! In the past, I've analyzed works by Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, Pasek & Paul, Jeanine Tesori, and Stephen Schwartz, just to name a few.
On Sundays on this channel, I post a video update of the progress I'm making on my writing projects, so you can follow along with the process as I create new musicals from scratch.
On Tuesdays on this channel, I post a video reacting to a performance by a star of musical theatre, discussing what makes them so amazing. For example, I recently recorded a video reacting to Aaron Tveit being cast in Sweeney Todd, despite the fact that he's not a baritone.

I’m not used to musical. As someone who is very far from this broadway world, I loved it. Thx for your opinion.
Stunning song and the end, Mateo! Stellar lyrics, I was gripped! I'm excited for the full album!
Really cool work!

Loveeeee
When I went to the notebook, I was sitting dead center in the front row in a bright orange hoodie and I swear Joy Woods just locked in and stared into my soul for the first like 2 minutes of my days, while I sobbed 😭
This sounds INCREDIBLE.
@@MusicTheatreTheory It absolutely was.
Coming at this 2 1/2 years after it was made, I do wonder why you didn’t include Saturday Night, which has actually been performed, even though it never had its intended Broadway debut in the 50s. I would also encourage you to see (if you haven’t since you made this) Sondheim’s only musical for television, Evening Primrose. It only contains four songs, but they are fascinating songs. And having seen the original Broadway production of A Little Night Music, I think it is a far better musical than you give it credit for being. I saw it more than 50 years ago and still remember how impressed I was when I saw it.
In the 2 1/2 years since you made this video, I hope you have familiarized yourself with some of the ones that you didn’t know. Three of them (Applause, Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Raisin) I saw on Broadway in their original productions, if not with their full original casts, and all of them have much in them worth familiarizing yourself with. You really should know 1776, Big River, and Fiorello! as well as a number of others you put on the “Don’t Know” list. There are several other musicals that I disagree with your ranking on, but they’re your opinion and not mine, so I will let those slide. A lot of them we are on the same page on. Now I need to look for your Sondheim rankings.
the og movie stuck with me after watching it despite the few things i didn’t love about it that when i listened to this album had been changed and i was over the moon. i had my jaw on the floor the entire time because of how surprised and happy i was with how the og was adapted
i played wednesday in a community theatre production when i was 15, and i remember this song kicking my ASS even in the lower key the updated version is in! so interesting how much theory goes into even the chords, i'll definitely think differently about it now XD
TBH the album took me a solid 2-3 listens to before I really started to say I liked it.. as for Mercy and the Orphans.. Mercy is about action and fighting, the Orphans were not really respected and essentially tried everything to not fight the Warriors, she lost respect and dipped
It actually ends on the IV chord ( Db )
Brilliant, this song is so clever and you explained it beautifully.
I can, because I saw White Girl in Danger! Michael R. Jackson is God!
Grew up in NYC, and I’m an older dude, so I still remember pre-Ghouliani/Doomberg NYC. Love The Warriors film, and grew up with the movie. I think your analysis of the album is great, because it acknowledges a lot of the problems I had with the adaptation. (I found this right after listening to the album for the first time). The boroughs rappers are musicians I grew up on, and I think Miranda misses the point of their work and the movie, to some extent. In the same way that Hamilton is a pretty good musical, but pretty historically selective, I felt like this piece was similar in my pluses and minuses. Sometimes a little too pandering, often making unnecessary changes in order to make us root for a character by sacrificing their complexity, but catchy as all hell with a good cast. Honestly, I would love to see you review the film and compare and contrast the two.
I think the idea is that each part of the album almost represents a different style of music. The rapper featured in the first number represent that gangster rap aspect of NYC but they're not really meant to be the encompassing voice of the entire piece. I think the changes made to the Warriors themselves is more so a case that originally they're supposed to be viewed as a social experiment as to what gang culture does to the youth. Nobody wants to be a part of this sort of culture, what systemic oppression forces people to join up in order to unite under the name of survival. That's why the main antagonists here above all else are the police
This is so good subscription added
This is exactly what I wanted LMM’s next concept album / major solo project to be. I like seeing Lin leaning more into Hip-Hop with a musical theatre influence in storytelling. Instead of a musical that uses his contemporary hip-hop influences, it’s a concept album that uses musical theatre storytelling to harness an aspect of the opera/concept album art form. It’s fresh, but still has his flare. It’s why I was excited for this album. I wanted to see where Lin went with his next major “solo” project away from working with Disney and being second fiddle to other great composers that he’s worked with since Hamilton. I didn’t want to see Lin try to make Hamilton but even bigger, I wanted to see if Lin had a couple more tricks up his sleeve while still feeling like it’s his own and not him forcing himself to reinvent the wheel. This is exactly that and I mean that in the nicest way possible.
Only correction @8:36, Cleon saw Luther shoot Cyrus, Cleon gets captured.
In the album it's Cleon. In the movie it was Fox
On the album as a whole: The most important thing to remember is that this was designed to be a cohesive story, told in 26 songs. As you know, lots of musicals have started out as concept albums, and there are other examples of albums (I believe Lin cites Green Day's American Idiot, for one) that were meant to be listened to straight through. On your initial analysis: You may have reached some different conclusions if you'd learned more about the movie and the idea behind the concept album prior to listening (although I do understand and respect the fact that you set out to react to it in real time for a reason). You might feel differently after diving into the background of the movie and what Lin and EISA (caps to emphasize that the second letter is "i" -- it's pronounced the same way Issa Rae's name is) set out to do with the album. On the key change in Call Me Mercy: At one point in the video you talk about the conventions of musical theatre writing and how this album breaks *a lot* of them (by design: again, they're not *necessarily* intending to turn it into a stage show). Yes, the key change is abrupt, but Lin's MO as a writer is that he calculates e v e r y t h i n g. I think the key change serves a very specific narrative purpose: at its core, Call Me Mercy is an "I want" song. She starts out wistfully, just admiring these women for their strength, but feeling unsure about what to do. To me the key change represents a split-second decision, which would have been undercut by building up to it. I loved watching you get hyped about some of (what I consider to be) the most fun songs. I hope you end up falling in love with the album as a whole, because there really is a lot of strategy and intentionality in the decisions Lin and Eisa made on it.
Thank you for this well-thought-out comment, I really appreciate hearing the other side - and omg thank you for catching that mistake! Eisa Davis!
@@MusicTheatreTheory To be fair, I thought it was Elsa at first, too, and then for a while I was pronouncing it "eye-sa"...it took hearing someone else say it to get there. 😆
The Hurricanes are actually a group from the warriors prior to this project. Now they do have a moment of screen time (like 5 seconds) in the the film. In the Rockstart movie tie in game, they’re actually shown and expanded as the Latin based gang in the world of the warriors. The Turnbull AC’s are actually like a denim wearing biker/skin head group, so I believe that was a change by Lin based on the location in the story. And a fun fact: James Remar, the cat-caller in the park, is Ajax in both the Film and game.
That’s so cool! Awesome to know!
Honestly i think it works the album as an Audio proyect. I just notice how they use the main plot with some moments to dig more, because i think there's a lot of moments where you can add some scenes just of the warriors to talking to know more of them, unlike hamilton where we have this "speaking moments" where we can learn more of whats going on. Like this little scenes where we see Hamilton and Burr talking showing us their relationship and how each one path meet. I love how they adapat some many things from the original movie that it feels different in a way that you can laern other perspective withouth changing what the warriors is. Love your video, i hope they make a stage version so maybe we can see how this warriors evolve.
Did you get a new camera or something? This looks great! I thought I'd love the album because I've always loved the movie and I love Hamilton (AND Lauryn Hill I mean...!) but it does sound like a generic Spotify-Top-10 at times tbh. Not a fan of the Blink 182/Green Day parts of this, nor do I understand the random System of a Down Toxicity cover on 'Going Down' LMAO The cast killed it though, I want Colman Domingo in everything. (Also I think I read Lin confirmed that this is just going to be the album, there's not going to be a production. He said the point of the album is just to follow the movie)
Brand new setup with a new computer, an enormous monitor and everything…so now I can use my iPhone camera via bluetooth with OBS
Going Down is in that style because Luther is so very different from the other gangs. Lin found rap too rhythmic and organized for the chaos that Luther represents, but found metal to be more appropriately chaotic.
Interesting commentary, I love how much I learn from your analyses =D Personally I liked the Warriors concept album, personally knowing very little about the material it's based on, but I didn't love it in the way Hamilton and In the Heights were immediate obsessions (in 2015 when the Hamilton cast recording came out my two most listened to albums on Spotify were Hamilton and Waitress and Waitress were like 33 listenings and Hamilton more than 300, so that says something). With that said I did find the music catchy for the most part and I have a few songs I absolutely loved. For my sake I absolutely loved Call me Mercy (it's my favorite song on the album), even if it does sound way to similar to Burn, and for me a lot of the reason is Julia Harriman's vocals on it, it sounds absolutely amazing.
I think you've done a few videos on Company already but I would love to see you do something on Aaron Tveit as Bobby (since you mentioned its a bariton role and he played Bobby regionally, and also Sweeney Todd, another baritone role) or anything with the 2018/2020/2022 gender-flipped version of Company?
Interestingly enough, I think some of your gripes might come from the fact that this is adopted from the 1979 movie. The film version is very straightforward and features the Warriors just fighting off a bunch of gangs and is very action-based and vulgar. The plot is also incredibly straightforward but the script at complications because behind the scenes drama led to the actor behind Fox being fired thus causing him to be abruptly killed out of nowhere. They had to reconstruct a lot of points here to make it work which is likely why everything is tied specifically to Cyrus and their speech. I definitely think Hamilton is the more complex story but I think that's because that deals with politics and the men behind Legends while the Warriors is sort of a 1970s popcorn movie
I argue the theme of the Warriors has a lot to do with survival, unity, and fighting for what you represent. The original film has that as well but it's kind of coated in a very toxic masculinity that kind of undercuts it. The Boroughs in the beginning are basically there to not only rap on the behalf of their cities but foreshadow what's about to happen throughout the plot. From them we learn just how dangerous this world is, that Cyrus is well respected, and that's the police are constantly swarming around like vultures. I think having them pop up to tell us a story kind of runs the risk of the musical turning into a Tarzan situation. It would kind of undercut the need for the characters to be there. I think the main and probably the most important number that kind of sums up the big theme is Cyrus's song. Cyrus is trying to tell the other gang members that United they can be a force I could but in a very MLK kind of way she ends up getting killed by Luther which causes her message to be lost among the crowd and everything turns into chaos. The irony is that the Warriors are the only ones that stuck to her message despite everybody trying to take them down over a crime that they never committed. There's definitely a lot of modern-day parallels to what's going on
Awesome. Insightful. Knowledgeable. I enjoyed your presentation and ranking process. Having seen all of the shows listed (even Frogs, at NYU and without the swimming pool) I mostly agree with your choices. Mine would only differ as follows: Sweeney Todd goes up to the top of the list, it’s an extraordinary piece of art. I’ve seen it quite a few times, including with the original cast, on the road, and even the City Opera version. It doesn’t fail to move me as a the masterpiece it is. Pacific Overtures is also an S for me. Opened in 1976 as a bicentennial homage, it’s musically as enjoyable as it is complex. The addition of traditional Japanese instruments in the music underlines the inclusion of Haiku and even Tanka and Katauta poetic structures in some of the lyrics. Amazing!. The First Act of Sunday In The Park is well placed in the S group; the Second Act not so much. There’s definitely a difference between both acts. As a whole, maybe it should be a solid A+. Thanks for giving Passion the recognition it deserves. I believe it’ll soon be “rediscovered” just like Merrily recently was. Thanks for a truly enjoyable and well done video.
This is amazing, can't imagine to sing that good at 16..., on another note, have you considered letting this get mixed properly, id be happy to help?
This was the most amazing experience, thank you so much!!
If you ever get to LA, would love to meet and talk about my history seeing Broadway shows, the originals.....amazing memories.
A truly favorite show; saw it as a kid 60 years ago....Jerry Orbach and the rest of the original cast....what a show!!! Timeless and will never go out of the canon. Performed everywhere...The TV version was good too with Ricardo Montalban as El Gallo.
There is so much talent in this video it’s blowing my mind
CHLOE!!!! Much love ❤❤
Oh when the stars align! I literally just got a callback for Neville in a regional production of SG when this showed up in my reccomended list. Absolutely invaluable perspective on this beautiful iconic piece, thank you.
Break a leg on your callback!
I absolutely adore Joe Locke and legit a few months before he announced his broadway debut he said “i’d love to do a musical but i don’t think i have the voice for it” AND THEN THIS BEAUTIFUL, TALENTED SON OF A BITCH SANG ALL THESE SONGS IN THEIR ORIGINAL KEY😭😭
So what does he do in the my friends reprise before pretty women? I remember that feeling low for me, a baritone.
Y can’t Disney think out their movies like anymore😭
congratulations !!! love your thoughts on music theory and theater and your original work is fantastic too !! can’t wait to see what you continue to make :D
Woah, you single-handedly convinced me to not leave my keyboard classes. And with Hamilton! Thanks mate
the part at 10:16 also sounds like a sped-up version of the piano for Children Will Listen. I can hear it best right when the Baker starts telling his son their story
I basically dont know anything about music theory but I started theater studies this year and I love musicals and the university doesnt really focus on that. I love these videos because you explain really complicated things in a fun way I can mostly understand. I am learning so much new things about music and musical theater!
This song gives me chills every time. The first time I saw come from away was on broadway with most of the original cast. I had never listened to the music before, just had a vague idea of what it was about. Was floored the entire time, this song was definitely one of the most memorable to me❤
Where do I go? I got to Music Theatre Theory when I want a bit of nostalgia and a bit of musical analysis.
Great video!
you just got my subscribe with this video
I love this video and the breakdown of everything, but let's get one thing clear. The biggest mistake of Hamilton's life was CHEATING on his wife, not telling the world about it
Interesting. I always really liked hurricane... maybe because it's the only song where I, as someone with no idea about singing, can actually kinda hit a few of the notes. xD
i love how much harmonic wandering schwartz does in this score. one of my favorite songs in pippin, Finale, begins the main melody in Eb and wanders its way to Ab before snapping back to Eb at the beginning of the verse again. (similar to how pippin is so conflicted in that situation!) it's so cool to me how stephen schwartz writes harmony and melody.
I don't really think that Spring awakening has a I want song. Or the like 4 first songs are. But there isn't really ONE song that explains all the protagonists goals. Great video though
Congrats and best of luck! ✨
