I am a professional wildlife, nature, and travel photographer. I love what I do and I am passionate about anything outdoor photography or travel related. I've traveled all over the world and have visited and spent time in 74 different countries. My videos are a mix of how-to, teaching of photography techniques, and showcasing wonderful places or good photography equipment which I believe in. I also test out new (and some older tried and true) gear and I make all sorts of recommendations for getting better photos.
Wildlife Photography - First Impressions with the SONY A9III
I've had the SONY A9III for about a week now and have taken it out to a couple of lakeside parks in the Denver, Colorado area for a couple of shoots. Here are some images I was able to capture. The camera is excellent. It feels solid in the hand, has amazing autofocus capabilities, is completely customizable to your preferences and certainly lives up to the hype that surrounds it. Stay tuned for more videos discussing the A9III.

I just purchased this lens. So far, I find it takes amazing photos! You show some beautiful shots in your examples. I aim to get that good!!!
give me your facebook link, i will join with you
Is there and case for this Lense for travel
Hi Don ! I am confused between the a6600 and the a6700... I don't want to spend an extra 60,000 Rs for AI driven a6700. Will a6600 fulfill my wildlife purposes? I have a Tamron 150-500 and am currently using a6400 , which is annoying since no AF during video shooting.
I needed this video last month. I missed so much stuff. This is stunning. Great instructions.
Exited to watch this video. I have a trip planned for November, will that be a total waste for birding?
thanks. hopefully this will improve my shots

Great tips. Thanks
Super video and very informative , one question about the ambient light , with the Sony 200-600mm being F6.3 at the long end is that not restrictive at times in a rainforest environment when the 600F4 might be better ?
Thanks very much. Your very detailed. No in else said to go in and tap the specific map to get it working. Thanks
Thank you. This had been a nightmare until watching this. Top tip.
You are welcome.
Wow, this is such a great in depth tutorial
Hey, thanks for watching and I hope I helped you out a bit.
Thank you so much for this video. I just got my lens today. I went to the lake Abba about some mallards. I thought for sure I was going to have track sharp images, but I was disappointed. I know it's me. I tried a higher iso for faster shutter. AV mode, manual mode. What do you shoot in for your bird and action shots, if you don't mind sharing? Thanks. Incredible clarity!
Thank you. I'm excited to use my new lens. I'm trying to find the quick release that you used in your video with the arm that you pulled up and put your foot in there, and locked it down. I can't seem to find that mechanism anywhere. I clicked on your ballhead link but it doesn't show the one with the arm that you have. Thank you
Hi, that one is made my 4th generation designs. Not sure they are in business anymore. It is very much like a Winberely Sidekick. Try and find one of those or a similar product. Have fun and may all your light be magic
@@DonMammoserPhoto Thank you so much. I'll look into it!! Happy photographing!📷
Great video all beautiful thanks for everything you’ve shared
You are welcome. I'll upload more as time allows. Hope your light is magic.
Great video thanks for sharing
Thank you for a great review and the wonderful sample images!
Thanks, I was about to use a hammer in about 2 seconds.
Don't do that! Glad I could help save your lens.
great video and thanks for the directions as well. The Tetons are beautiful!
Hi and thanks for watching. Yeah, I love the Tetons. May all your light be great.
Nothing works with my filter. It stucked forever.. Only didn't try a thick rubber band yet, need to buy it
Hey Don, I've been thinking of investing in the Sony A6600 and the only thing turning me off is the 1/4000th of a second shutter speed. Do you think that it has been a problem in some cases? Also, for this trip, was the A6600 used? Thanks.
Hi and thanks for watching. The 1/4000 sec. shutter speed is no issue at all. In Costa Rica I normally use my a9ii and a9iii bodies and my current aps-c Sony body is the a6700. The a6600 is VERY good as well.
Hello, thank you very much for your video. I have a question, how do you get so close to the birds? I have been doing wildlife photography for 10 years, I have never managed to get so close to birds. Do you stay in hides with water points? If not, what is your technique? Thanks 🙏🏻
Hi and thanks for watching. I never spend any time in hides. Really, my technique is just to go where the birds are used to seeing people and don't view us as a threat. This makes things much easier. Come on one of my photo tours and I'll take you to many such spots. Otherwise, have fun.
Omg!!! Thank you so much!!!
spend a while twisting by hand and with the rubber band it came off in a second, thank you
Hours of struggling and the rubber glove trick worked in 3 seconds. Thank you!
same for me 😀 so good!
Glad to help! Thanks for watching.
its definately an A+ for the pictures. thanks
Will the GPS on phone still show your location, offline, on the map you downloaded? Thanks.
Great video. However, if you need to use it for walking, like I do, you need IOS 17 on an iPhone.
Nice video and cool pics! Keep up the great work! :)
The rubber band option for the win!
Thanks for posting: The rubber glove worked for me!
I did it! Thx!
Very useful information. I'm just learning the ropes of flying bird photography and one thing that has been a struggle for me is throwing the camera up and finding the bird in the viewfinder when its on 600mm. I've been keeping it on 200 and zooming to 600 after I've got the bird in the view finder. That has helped me a lot. I'm sure in time I'll get the knack of being on target when I pull the camera up but for now this works.
Hey, glad I could help. You are doing the right technique of using a shorter zoom to find the bird at first. It sure is a fun challenge! Enjoy and may your light be great.
Thanks , i was looking for this video 5 years ago, i thought there is no solution anymore.
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching my videos.
I think you should do this with the a9ii and 209-600g
Hi Peter, yes I will. Just gathering a few images first. Stay tuned and thanks for watching.
It’s crazy this is such a problem! 😂. Rubber band worked!
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching my videos.
Lifesaver! Trying to switch to a solar filter for the eclipse and my cpl was stuck. Rubber gloves worked for me
Hi. Great. Glad I could help. Hopefully your shots came out great.
Hi Don are you shooting in Shutter priority? are you also auto ISO ? if not could you please elaborate ? thank you!
Hi, for most of the shots in that video I used Aperture Priority mode and I'd choose a specific ISO to give me enough shutter speed. I have since moved to Shutter Priority mode for most of my wildlife work with auto ISO but I go into my ISO settings first and limit the max ISO to 6400 on this camera. Other cameras I have such as my full frame A9III I'll set the upper limit to 25,600. Noise has become manageable in PP but of course blurry images can't be fixed. Thanks for watching my videos.
great content.... I'm planning to purchase a6700 with the 200-600 will it be good for bird photography
Hi, Yes, that combo will be great. I also have the a6700 and with the 200-600mm lens it is AWESOME! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for your expert knowledge Don. Kind regards, Phil
Hi Phil, no problem, you are welcome. I'm happy to help, and I do appreciate you watching. Hope all your light is magic.
Can anyone bird i.d. @3:14 its got the color of a reddish egret, but is it tho?
Hi, Yes, it is indeed a Reddish Egret. Thanks for watching.
@@DonMammoserPhoto thanks for the positive I.D... I see them daily. much love great video.
That trick with the rubber band…. Awesome!
Hi, yeah, that is an easy way to get those stuck filters off. Glad you liked the tip. Thanks for watching.
So I have the a6000 on the 200-600 getting a lot of missed out of focus is the a6600 that much better focus???
Hi, Yes it is, and the a6700 is heads and tails better than the a6600. The new AI AF on all Sony bodies is incredibly accurate. Thanks for watching.
Your shots are really stunning.
Hi, I appreciate your positive comment. I also appreciate you watching my videos. I hope your light is magic.
Thanks, Don. You inspired me to get this lens and pair it with my A6600. I am a complete beginner and I am super confident I have a setup that will last me years. Hope I can come close to recreating some of your work here!
Hi, I like the idea and that kit should be easy to use and will last for a long time. Plus, it really can photograph most subjects very well. I hope your light is magic. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Don for such a nice description of perfect places to take pictures.
You are very welcome. I appreciate you watching my videos. I hope all your light is magic.
I am facing issue with A9iii RAW image in LRC-2022. Not able to open. I donot have any issue with RAW file from my A7iv. Have you faced any such issue ?
Hi, thanks for watching. No, I don't have any issues like you mention. Maybe check for updates to your LR? Sorry I can't help more.
Thank you for sharing!!! Have you noticed an obvious decrease in pic quality? I’m debating between a1 and a93. Thanks!
I can't compare to the A1 as I've never owned that camera, but I can say that compared to my A9II the A9III image quality is equal or better. However, I can say that the pre-capture and the AF speed and the 120fps are all game changers compared to any other camera, including the A1. Amazing images are now possible that never were possible before. Thanks for watching.
