Great interview! Loads of good tips in there. Especially your comments ~5:00 on collaborating to ensure the production doesn’t stray too far from the vision, and speaking up as soon as you feel it’s gone astray. 👏🏼. Well done to you both.

These are great for daily use as a warm-up or to soothe a tired voice. If you're looking to build your voice you will also want to add other kinds of exercises that are without the straw. Try singing a song in different keys. Choose the key that is comfortable for you and that sounds the best. It’s not brain surgery. You’ll know when you’ve found the best key. You don’t need a video to find your best key.
you were my favorite part of the video!!

AWWWW you guys are the best! 🥰
Hi, i am 18yo beginner , have 0 talent and i want to learn singing i am confused where i should start? Im lost
Hi there! First off, don’t worry about ‘0 talent’-most great singers started as beginners, just like you! The most important thing is your desire to learn, and that’s a huge step in the right direction. 🎶 Here’s a simple roadmap to get started: 1⃣ Start with the basics: Learn how to breathe properly for singing and practice simple vocal warm-ups. 2⃣ Build consistency: Even 10-15 minutes a day of focused practice can make a big difference over time. 3⃣ Consider your goals: Are you singing for fun, or do you want to perform? Knowing this can help guide your journey. 4⃣ Get feedback: If possible, work with a vocal coach (I’d love to help if you're interested!) or join a community where you can share your progress. Remember, every singer was a beginner once-talent is just a starting point. What really matters is consistent practice and a love for music. You’ve got this! 💪 Let me know if you have any specific questions or need more resources!
@theunlimitedvoice thank you so much for the suggestion and ffeedback, can you help me to find a community?
That was great, Annie. I'm going to share this with my girlfriend, who doesn't have a lot of confidence in her voice. Thank you.

@@TheAlcamus thank you! 🙏🏼 It was really fun.
Nice lesson thank you! I write a lot of songs for my project I am a baritone I suppose but can sing in some tenor ranges I usually write in D minor, C maj, A minor sometimes B or Bb and G. What happens to me is I'll get the instrumentation done then when working on the vocal melody I'll find yeah maybe that's not the best key - and then a lot times it's too late to change the key. So, do you have suggestions or a suggestion as to what key or keys might be best suited to me?
@@Pulse2AM Without hearing your voice and music, it’s difficult to give you super specific advice, but tell me this: are you able to sing comfortably in your first bridge? (Meaning between E4 - G4?) If so, you could try writing in E or F as well. Then you’d possibly be singing in your passage when you are at the top of the octave. If you are able to sing in your passage comfortably, then those notes can be really fun and exciting for the listener. How does G work for you? You could always book a free consultation with me if you’d like!
I just watch reaction videos from otv members’ stream. They all say how much they love you ☺️
@@TheCialiv that means the world to me. ❤️✨
First serious attempts at singing. I am breathy because I am painfully shy and not fully closing the folds lets me sing without anyone being able to hear me and criticize.
Thank you so much for sharing-I completely understand how shyness can make singing feel vulnerable. First of all, congratulations on taking your first serious steps into singing! That’s a huge accomplishment, and it takes courage to start. Breathiness often comes from a mix of physical and emotional factors. It sounds like you're intentionally keeping your vocal folds slightly open as a protective mechanism. That’s okay for now, but as you build confidence, you can start working on closing the folds more fully to bring more presence to your voice. Here are a few tips to ease into it: *Start Small and Safe:* Practice in a space where you feel completely comfortable and free from judgment-this can help you focus on your voice without worrying about others hearing you. *Humming Exercises:* Humming is a gentle way to encourage vocal fold closure. Try humming softly on a comfortable pitch, and then gradually add more sound as you feel ready. *Breath Control:* Work on slow, steady breaths to support your voice and reduce excess airiness. Think of letting your voice ride on the air rather than letting too much air escape. *Mindset Shift:* Remember, singing is about expressing yourself-it’s not about perfection. The more you focus on the joy of singing, the less critical you’ll feel about being heard. You’re on the right track, and it’s okay to take your time. Singing is a journey, and every step forward, no matter how small, is progress. Keep going-you’ve got this!

Hi! Thank you for your comment! Without hearing your voice, I cannot give you specific advice, but it can help a lot if you work with a coach even a little bit instead of completely learning independently by watching TH-cam videos. I have a group program called The Unlimited Voice Academy, and we do 2 group coaching calls a month where you can get one-on-one help from me in a group setting. It also comes with video lessons and a vocal exercise library. It's very reasonably priced if you want to try it for a month and see if it is a good fit for you. The link is above in the description of this video. Let me know what you think!
This is my way of finding out what key suits me..I sing a verse or two of the song in Acapella into my phone..I then go to my piano and play backing to my vocals to find out what key I'm singing in..I have a rough idea of how high or low my vocal range should be..I then set the key of the song to the highest key that will suit my vocal range...This is all done by ear..I can barely read music. Singing reminds me of painting...don't be afraid to make a mistake..and if you love the song or painting your doing it helps no end..Emotion in the voice can also help a lot while singing...
Those are great tips. Your method is a great way to explore. I LOVE your analogy of singing to painting! And yes, emotion helps the voice tremendously. Thanks for commenting!

Great video Annie! I definitely struggle with tongue tension, and these exercises definitely helped even after only a single run! Also one of your cutest videos to date, with highlights including your Kermit the frog voice, stretching your own tongue on camera, and all the singing with tongue hanging out! Love it! Glad no one is watching me practice these :)
Paul, I’ve decided to just let it all hang out, and stop being a perfectionist, so you have no idea how happy your comment makes me. 😅 And I’m so glad you found the tools helpful. They really do work! Thanks so much for your comment!
Hi Annie, I enjoy your instructional videos and wondered if you could help. I watched your video where you talked about head voice and chest voice and mixing. You are right with what you say about accessing head voice and chest voice, which I can do, but I dont mix very well. I am a baritone and wondered if you could advise me on which of your exercises would help with my mix, thank you in advance
Hi Ken! Yes! I would love to help. I have so many great exercises in my Vocal Exercise Library that would help you if you want to try out our Unlimited Voice Academy membership. The link is in the description here for more info. I am also about to release a Mix Voice Warm Up for lower/male voices very soon... probably next week!
@@theunlimitedvoice That would be so helpful, thank you for replying so quickly
Irrelevant comment: those last two glissando exercises remind me of a few sci fi movies I've seen; thought you might need to know that, LOL.
I'm a big sci-fi fan, so I'm totally good with that! ¨̮
@@theunlimitedvoice Himm, I wonder if the sound effects person on those old movies just blew bubbles through a straw, LOL
Thank you beaucoup! Qestion: Is this a warm-up exercise? Should you do these before starting other vocal exercises?
Hi! You certainly can use this as a warmup before doing other exercises. If I were planning to sing songs I would personally want to do some warming up on vowel and consonant combos with scales. But this is great on its own to use as a more therapeutic exercise, a cool down, or it also works nicely as a warmup before speaking. Hope that helps!
@@littlelovebug83 Great; thanks for your response.
I just hit C6. C5 fells like nothing in full voice. I'm a light tenor :)
That is awesome. Thanks so much for sharing that. The straws can unlock notes we didn't know we even had!
Great instruction. I really want to strengthen my chest voice. I’m a soprano and want to add more depth to my sound. Thanks!
I'm so glad you found this helpful! Thank you so much for your comment.
Should there be different exercises for Lyrical sopranos?
@rosettastoll4001 Great question! While the chest voice warmup exercises I shared work well for most female singers, lyrical sopranos might benefit from a tailored approach based on their vocal type and the style of music they’re singing. *For Lyrical Sopranos:* *Style Matters:* If you're singing classical repertoire, chest voice use is usually minimal and requires a lighter, blended approach. In contrast, for musical theater or contemporary styles, you may need to develop more strength and resonance in your chest voice. *Gentle Transitions:* Exercises that help you transition smoothly between chest and head voice are essential, such as sliding sirens or descending scales with a light touch. *Range-Specific Warmups:* Stay within a comfortable lower range when warming up chest voice, especially for classical singing. For contemporary styles, you might extend the range slightly to build strength in that area. *Dynamic Control:* Work on dynamics to create depth without straining, like starting softly in chest voice and gradually building volume. Chest voice is foundational for every singer, but how you use and warm it up will depend on your vocal goals and the demands of your repertoire. Always prioritize vocal health and choose exercises that suit both your range and the music you're performing! Let me know if you found that helpful!
@@theunlimitedvoice thank you
Errr I'm not sure if I entirely agree with your guide to singing a song originally performed by a member of the opposite sex.... Male baritones would probably need to raise the pitch ofba 6:44 song by 3 or 4 semitones and sing an octave lower. Females may wish to do the opposite. Another thought and something I consider when covering a song is to listen to where the original artist's voice transitions from upper chest to head and adjust the key to where mine does the same. As a drag artiste, I frequentlly need to perform songs originally sung by females. X
Hi! Thank you for your comment! I'm pleased to hear your perspective. My suggestion is undoubtedly just a place to start. The male and female passages sit 5 semitones apart, so my thinking is that you end up in a similar place in your voice as the opposite gender based on my suggestion. It should potentially do the same thing as your suggestion about finding the same voice transition from upper chest to head. But I agree with you that it won't always be the best in every case. For example, if the tessitura of a song sung by a female sits mainly in the 2nd passage and is still too high for a male to sing in his second passage, your suggestion of raising the key 3-4 semitones and going an octave down would work better. It would put it closer to the male first passage. It takes some experimenting and exploration, and at the end of the day, you have to trust what feels good for you. I appreciate you and your additional suggestions! xo
is not the second male passage supposed to be A4 - C5, since middle C is C4 ???
Oh no! Yes, you're totally right. I mistyped it. Thank you for pointing that out. I'll note the correction in the description. Thanks again!
