Someone Else's Genocide (single)
This is one of my older singer-songwriter tunes - the recording is from 2016. The lyrics have undergone some changes since then, but these are the originals (working on a new recording with the updated lyrics).
LYRICS:
We’re told about settlers who came on boats
To tame and enslave a new frontier
we’re told about natives who broke bread with ‘em
that that’s what we celebrate every year
A day of thanksgiving for you and me
sounds a lot better than the history
where we slaughtered over 700 young and old
and gave thanks that the savages bodies were cold.
But folks complain at the dinner table whenever that story’s told.
‘Cause it’s easier to feel patriotic
than to ever accept the guilt we owe
it’s easier to say it’s all about family
than admit we’re disgusted by what we know
so we’ll teach our children cute little lies
so we can validate their privilege and so no one cries
‘cause it’s easier to feel patriotic
when it’s someone else’s genocide.
We learn in elementary school who found this land
we memorize the three ship’s names
We affirm it with a federal holiday
Some places even do parades.
We tell our kids “in 1492
Columbus sailed the ocean blue”
but we omit the slaving and the massacres
forget the rapes the infections and the sheer numbers
‘cause it’s better kids be comfortable than wonder whose descendants have it worse.
‘Cause it’s easier to feel patriotic
than to talk about slavery or disease
it’s easier to say it’s all about history
than examine oppression's subtleties
So we’ll teach our children cute little lies
so we can validate their privilege and so no one cries
‘Cause it’s easier to feel patriotic
when it’s someone else’s genocide.
Some folks say this is god’s country
a god that’s imported and white.
And because they’re descendants, not tormentors
What they own is right.
Say it wasn’t their fault, if it's not by their hand
Pretend a flag’s for heritage instead of the Klan,
Justify tradition and you never have to worry about the people that tradition makes you better than.
It’s easier to feel patriotic
than to sow too much doubt or scare the kids,
It’s easier to just keep the symbols
than admit to our willful ignorance
So we’ll teach our children cute little lies
so we can validate their privilege and so no one cries
‘cause it’s easier to feel patriotic
when it's someone else’s genocide.
It’s easier to feel patriotic
than to empathize with what’s different
It’s easier to swear to god and country
than to swear on yourself and hope you're fit.
so we’ll teach the future great big lies
so we can maintain this privilege to ignore who dies
‘Cause it’s easier to feel patriotic
when it's someone else's genocide.

Whoa, your cover gives me goosebumps, this is very good!!!
unfortunately - I'm begging for an updated version. This shit never stops.
NYT and WaPo are considered liberal in the US? For me, they are right-wing hardliners, spreading hasbara and US exceptionalism. BBC isn't any different. Breitbart is an excuse for a bad joke, of course.
i have loved this song for so many years and this is the best cover i've ever listened to and it's even been updated this was just absolutely beautiful
Great version! Phil would be pleased.
Dude, I was not expecting this to be so pure and clean. This is fantastic. Keep on with this stuff, comrade
It’s actually disgraceful that this doesn’t have more views. This was PERFECTION 😭
I'm going to take this as an invitation to vent : ... so , you know how the most they would admit to is : diseases etc. ... ... yeah , diseases... diseases were indeed weaponized against the Americans (the "Indians") ... but we never think about the fact that : all the world has been suffering from epidemics for thousands of years... BUT populations recover !! - if they are allowed to recover ::: so there is something right there glaring into your face ... ... which is endless systematic slaughter... starvation etc. ... and yes, diseases were also weaponized...
If you look at the polling of black people on pew or Gallup (the majority, not just progressive or revolutionary leftist black activists) they don’t want abolition or defunding. Maybe they don’t want corrupt or brutal or misbehaving police, they want police to deal with crime that is happening in their neighborhood (perhaps, as they should).
This is my favorite version after Phil Ochs
Perfection, good voice. Well thought out lyrics. You perfectly embody the spirit of a modern US liberal. Phill Ochs would be proud. But fr, USA should get its self together, here in Europe our social programs are a basic standard of living. And sure you can’t get horrendously rich, but you still have plenty of freedom.
You have me ready to cry. Well done
This should be on Spotify
I love this. I'm going to use this to make a version more focused on COVID and the Democrats and/or Tories. It would be an honor if you set it to your track, and I'd appreciate it if I can have your instrumentals. I'm already imagining harmonizing with you, but I need to sit down and actually write it instead of having verses come to me in the middle of flossing
thank you for covering this so we don't have to listen to David Rovics, a massive transmisogynist
Oh god I got Paul Robeson and David Rovics mixed up was about to say “bro died in 1976, of course he had some shitty opinions on gender” lol
Then I realized he also never sang that shit
