    How about the shaft stiffness, 19k? And do you like the metal connector or plastic

    • @oceanskicanterbury
      @oceanskicanterbury 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah 19k seems good 👍 happy with the plastic adjustment works fine and harder to accidentally knock, draw back is the angle indications have 10 degree intervals where as the metal ones have 5 degrees intervals. But again I don’t have a problem getting my angle right with the plastic adjuster. 👍 thanks for commenting

    It would be interesting to compare the Epic mid twist with the Braca VIII. I have not really found much info on the Braca VIII, just that it has quite a bit of twist.

    • @oceanskicanterbury
      @oceanskicanterbury 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah the epic mid twist has a fixed size of 700 in combination with a stiffer paddle shaft, where as the braca 11 will come in a range of sizes. I’ve tried both, both work on Similar principles of big catch clean exit (twist) I feel the braca has a bit more flexibility in the stroke path than the epic.

      Yep it’s their latest paddle. Haven’t tried it in the surf would be interesting to see how it behaves through white water. Never had any issues with using a flat water blade in the surf however 👍 Fred and rooster like theirs also has an oval shaft for hand placement and is stiff.

    The main section of the Columbia that folks do downwinders on is well over 100 miles long and conditions can vary over that length on any given day. I suppose on smaller days, "short period chop" is not inaccurate. Usually the waves are pretty well lined up, although there are a few notable short sections where there can be significant cross wave action (the prelude to Swell City, and some of the river bends) But on bigger wind/wave days the waves can get ocean swell size and stretch out the period quite nicely over a number of river stretches. When Swell City is running big, the waves still tend to be fairly close together and can get quite steep. You really need to check it out for yourself!

      @@oceanskicanterbury I understand about getting a surfski - particularly the one you really prefer. For future reference, the Gorge Champs website has kept a link to a google spreadsheet for listing locals with boats (the sheet was created by a paddler from Bellingham, Washington) available as well as a tab for paddlers who are looking for surfskis and outriggers to rent. The race is particularly popular for outriggers now and getting canoes for everyone who wants them is a real challenge. But there were a number of local surfskis available that did not get used. Usually there are so many folks (some with trailers) going to the race from Bellingham that burrowing a local boat and getting it to the Gorge is not a big problem. If money is an issue (there is a bit of range in what some folks want to charge) I don't see why you could not at least try to negotiate a deal where you possibly help the boat owner out if they think they ever want visit your part of the world...

      @@oceanskicanterbury Sorry to hear about boat hire issues. Outriggers are really coming in big numbers to the Gorge race now and they have a big problem finding an OC for everyone. The Gorge Champs' website includes a link to a google spreadsheet for renting surfskis and OCs that locals from my town - Bellingham, WA have been using for several years now. It has a tab for available boats and a tab for paddlers looking for boats. I'm pretty sure not all of the surfskis on the list were taken this year. But I guess you also have to see one that you would be happy with.

    I had a similar situation quite a few years back. Using big bladed Bratcha 2 from South Africa gave me more stability and confidence in really bumpy water, compared to my Bratcha 1, which was a few cm shorter and maybe a cm narrower. However, I found that sticking with the smaller blade size, the body soon adapted and it didn't take long to feel just as comfortable using that instead of the bigger blades.

    I use a Braca IV paddle when paddling in a K1, but have changed to a Braca XI (Van Dusen) for my surf ski because it has a better catch in the rough and extra reinforcement for bracing etc. I take a slightly different approach dependent on the conditions and distance to be covered, changing the length of the shaft rather than blade area. Mine is a 760 and in lighter conditions or shorter distances I use a longer shaft (218cm) and when conditions are bad and/or I’m paddling a longer distance, I shorten the shaft to about 214cm. I find that altering the shaft length allows me to benefit from the larger blade for both drive and stability.

    • @oceanskicanterbury
      @oceanskicanterbury ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Josue. Ocean skis typically a bit more maneuverable in the chop but if you have to punch through any surf breaks bigger than a few ft we preferr using a spec ski. Similar skill set just not as comfortable to sit on for long periods

    • @josuedelucca7252
      @josuedelucca7252 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oceanskicanterbury Thanks for your suggestions 😊 I try to refrain from punching through white water on my ocean ski, either by choosing surf breaks which have a non breaking channel, or reducing speed when approaching a steep wave. But reducing speed makes a ski unstable, increases effort to bring it up back to speed, and there's the risk of being catapulted backwards😬 So, I avoid breakers most of the time if there's no channel. I don't go for long paddles on the ocean ski, I prefer to surf. If no waves, very rarely will I do a traditional downwind with upwind taxi. Mostly, I'd go upwind a few km, turn back downwind, rest and repeat. I think that based on your suggestions, a spec ski could open more surfing spots for me. Thanks again ‼️
