It’s Thursday, the 2nd of January, 2025, and I’m at Amsterdam Zuid. For some context, this station is located in the Zuidas district of Amsterdam and was built in the median of the A10 Motorway. The station opened on December 21st, 1978, along with the first section of the Leiden to Weesp line. Until 1981, Zuid was the line's southern terminus; afterwards it was extended south to Amsterdam RAI. In 1985 the station was renamed to Amsterdam Zuid WTC in conjunction with the opening of The Amsterdam World Trade Centre, which is located within close proximity to the station. This would be followed by the opening of the Metro/Tram station in 1990, located adjacent to the existing NS platforms. This saw the introduction of the M51 Sneltram (Express Tram) service, which ran over the existing Metro network until reaching the extension to Zuid, where the trains would switch from 3rd rail to OHLE and run on the existing tram network and new infrastructure to Westwijk. To operate this service, dual voltage S1/S2 units would be introduced. Due to these units being designed to run over the metro network, they had high floors, which necessitated the construction of separate platforms at tram stops, as the existing Stadt (City) trams were all low-floor vehicles. In 2006 the station would be expanded with the construction of the additional island platform, and upon reopening the WTC suffix would be dropped with the station reverting to its original name. In 2018 the M52 Metro line would open with Zuid being the line's southern terminus. Following this, in 2019, through the running of the M51 line, the tram network would cease, with the route being revised with trains being diverted to Isolatorweg. Additionally, tram route № 25 (Amsteltram) was introduced in 2020 to replace the former M51 service to Westwijk.
