This film makes fun of all organized religion using Judeo-Christian teachings. It also mocks UK politics at the time- the liberal parties were fighting for purity of ideas while Margaret Thatchers conservative party was consolidating power.
The reason why the enchanter said he was called "tim ?" is because the actor actually forgot his characters name and they desided too keep it in.
@@Stefan-ps6tl lol thats a good one! Ty for that
the guy who drew the aliens animation, who was also the jailer "we have lumps of it round the back" among other roles, isTerry Gilliam, director of Brazil, 12 Monkeys and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas among other great movies
The best joke of all was at the very end of the credits, when the guy in the taxi decided to give the driver 20 more minutes..."but, that's IT!".
"Only in a rerun" is a great comeback to "I'll be back" here but many either don't appreciate it or are too busy talking about "I'll be back" to notice.
We def fell into the 2nd camp. Woops! I agree though it was a great comeback.
It's basically just this and "Dogma" for great comedies about religion. Hollywood has always been reticent, for obvious reasons.
So much stuff went over their heads lol won't be back haha
6:11 "she's got a beard hanger,...or "he's",..." lol, man dressed a women,..dressed as a man,... 😂 i've always loved this film, so many great parts! i remember growing up as a kid watching Faulty Towers, that's when i was introduced to this type of comedy. great reaction, i subbed for more! 👍
TY! Editing this one was a challenge as there were so many funny parts we wanted to keep.
Kinda Dark, it's the Dark Ages.
No reactors ever seem to keep Killian's great come back to Arnold's 'I'll be back'. 'Why wasn't he wearing pants?'... This isn't edited that you are watching right? I thought I recalled it being pretty obvious what he was attempting there.
@@Lunarbob19 my guess is a lot of us hear the ‘ill be back’ and start talking about and miss the comeback, but who knows. Which part are you referring to about the pants? Sorry its been a few weeks
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse Okay well Killian says something like 'Only in a rerun'. And I mean when Dynamo encounters the female lead in the building, he was trying to SA her.
@@Lunarbob19 Gotcha! Yea it was obvious to us he was trying to SA her, i think our comment was more how ridiculous he looked wearing just tighty whities lol.
Others have pointed out that Terry Gilliam went on to direct other movies, but he also directed The Holy Grail, with Terry Jones, who played Brian's Mum. He usually played the grotesque characters, like the bridgekeeper & the 'mad' jailor, but he also played Patsy, the coconut clapper who says, "It's only a model". Look out for him being hilarious in the background 😂
I consider Monty Python more an actual genre of humor.
I think the French may have paid off the modern police with livestock, of which they obviously have a surplus.
It isn't that hard to just say 'she' if the actor is playing a woman character regardless of their own gender outside the film. The same thing for taking characters as different people from the same actor.
Agreed
Great reaction.
@@benvandermerwe4934 tyvm!
This is the most credible account of the origins of religion! 😂
Doubt my devote Catholic parents ever forgave me for taking them to see "Brian". "Romani ite domus!"
🤣
Sorry, I just don't understand the need to watch several times before getting the humor of Monty Python. I saw Holy Grail in the theater at 14 and loved it right away. Yes, I've since watched it over and over, but not out of any need to catch up. Seems to me you folks could use more intelligent, absurdist, silly humor like this to fine tune your senses of humor. Keep trying, it's worth it.
@@kevinlewallen4778 Sorry for the confusion, what we meant is that the movies get funnier for us on every rewatch. Hope that clears it up!
Monty Python is a sketch comedy acting troupe, so they play most of the roles in all their stuff. This movie actually had a lot more actors playing other roles than in most of their work. The cartoons are made by the American member of the group, Terry Gilliam. He played the jailer in this movie and the old man from scene 24/bridge keeper in Holy Grail. He also has gone on to direct a ton of really great, weird movies.
@@MuadDib042 The two jailers are one of my fav parts of the movie. Also someone did mention Terry Gilliam directing > I looked him up and he directed 12 Monkeys which I really enjoyed!
As someone who took Latin in high school, the scene where the centurion forces Brian to get "Romans go home" grammar correct will always be one of my favorite movie scenes. #RomaniIteDomum
Keep in mind that this movie came out in August 1979, just 9 months before "The Empire Strikes Back" came out. Empire was one of the most anticipated movies of all time and the hype was already building. Hence the idea of putting in a space alien fight scene.
@@timsmith8489 makes sense. Speaking of Star Wars, Jane hasnt seen the old trilogy so that might be something I can convince her to react to in the future!
The Pythons have two other full length movie features: The Meaning Of Life, and And Now For Something Completely Different. The former is a full film that is a collection of sections of the stages of life. The latter is a collection of sketches from their television show Monty Python's Flying Circus redone for the big screen. I think they're both worth checking out since you liked both Holy Grail and Life of Brian. There is also a full length live performance, Live At The Hollywood Bowl, which is fantastic.
@@Christopher-Baltimore we’ll def check them both out, and ty for the recommendations!
21:35 Brian's just repeating one of Jesus' parables--badly--to a crowd that doesn't "get" parables. From Google: The phrase “consider the lilies of the field” appears in the Bible in Matthew 6:28, where Jesus Christ advises his followers not to worry about material needs: “Why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin. And yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”
The alien war is not explained in the film but more background is provided in the novel the film was based on. The story began with an Eye Carrier Royal, a young nobleman who must travel to a dangerous desert planet to ensure the future of his family and people. He is on a quest to rescue a beautiful princess, help the Rebel Alliance, and restore freedom and justice to the Galaxy. The plot revolves around the struggle for control of the planet Bupkiz, the only source of "weed" (Blancmanges), a vital drug in a fight for dominance on this harsh desert world.
@@Sirala6 does the nobleman end up becoming an all powerful god emperor?
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse lol seriously
Yes, you will probably find this film funnier over time, and especially with repeat viewings. Even with the TV show (Monty Python's Flying Circus), it wasn't uncommon to feel vaguely disappointed with an episode while watching it, only to laugh twice as hard when you discussed it (and quoted from it!) with friends the next day. Expect to find yourself using quotes like "What have the Romans ever done for us?", "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!", and "I'm Brian, and so's my wife!" with increasing regularity!
That's how we felt with Holy Grail when we watched, and it's been better for us ever since lol. Strange how that works!
It's literally the life of Brian, from birth to death. He is the focus and that arguably gives it more unity than Holy Grail. The budget is much bigger and the script full of satire. Everything's a target, from religion, politics and to society in general. In that way it's more meaningful than Holy Grail. Even the space battle references and makes fun of Star Wars (also shot in Tunisia).
@@joebloggs396 didnt think about star wars at the time of viewing. Thanks for the insight!
Yeah, the final script was finished at the beginning of 1978, and filming was done later that year, so the _Star Wars_ craze was still riding strong on just its first release wave. They weren’t going to let that go without a fun little jab.
The Python humour can be the usual silly comedy, but the Pythons also had some philosophical things to say. And Life Of Brian has a lot to say about organized religion, sectarian politics, gender roles etc. I think it has to be judged more on this level, than just a "silly comedy." Leave it to the Brits to make fun of imperialism, and look for the goodness it can bring. Just ask the poverty stricken people of India, "What has British Imperialism done for us?"
@@EpizodesHorizons Some good points! Its also great as a silly comedy too tho 🤣
Space movies were popular in 1979, so they put in the UFO scene.
@@garylee3685 ah that makes sense. Still felt crazy random but it worked for us!
Most people agree that Holy grail is funnier but Life Of Brian has more of a coherent storyline and a point to make about human behavior. On rewatching it you notice that all of the jokes are around the theme of people being stuck on one way of thinking and stubbornly refusing to be dissuaded from it. The Pythons felt that Jesus Christ himself was good, as he is portrayed in the film, but that his followers were disastrously misinterpreting his teachings.
@@JoeDatorCartoonist A tale as old as time lol! I did enjoy the way that Life of Brian felt more like a movie on first viewing vs Holy Grail.
In case you don't know him the artist is the now famous director Terry Gilliam. Check him out!
@@slowswimmer9169 I HAD NO IDEA he directed 12 monkeys. I LOVE that movie and want to get Jane to react to it.
@OfficialDNJmoviehouse Oh yes 12 monkeys is a must do! I will also suggest , since you love comedies, I suggest "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" and "The Time Bandits" both are classics of the 80s fantasy genre. Btw Terry Gilliam is in my favorite scene here (he's playing the mmad jailor) "anyway get on with the story" 🤣
@@slowswimmer9169 we’ll have to check em out! And agree with you the 2 jailors are one of our fav scenes lol!
So awesome. I think you've picked the best "Christmas movie" that's not really about Christmas to watch during this time.🖖 Edit: The aliens seem random for the film, but at the time the original Star Wars had just come out and Hollywood seemed to want to create movies with space and spaceship themes. So the Pythons felt it needed a touch of space for the time.

Too educated for live reactions.
😅. Thanks for commenting!
The Monty Python motto was "And now for something completely different". Randomness is part of their style since their original TV series in the 60s. They're also a sketch troupe first and foremost and each member writes their own bits. This movie is distinct from Holy Grail in that it has a more consistent storyline and character arc... where as Holy Grail is much more of a series of sketches. Meaning of Life does back to a more sketch based style.
@@DanJackson1977 i will admit i did enjoy the more ‘movie like’ style of Life of Brian. Interesting to see how we view Meaning of Life when we check it out!
All animations throughout the Monty Pythons were made by their only american member, Terry Gilliam, who also directed many cult classics - Brazil, Fisher King, Baron Muchhausen and more. check them out
@@puppyash9656 ty for that info! We’ll have to check em out!
This one is a whole lot funnier if you really know the Biblical story of Jesus. There's a lot of subtle humour packed in that you need to know the story to really get, but then that was true of Holy Grail too - these guys are cleverer than the silliness would actually suggest, but the basic level of silliness means it still works even if you don't have the context. I hope you go on to watch The meaning of life. It doesn't have the same following as the first two, but it definitely still has its moments :)
@@charlottec4086 Jane and I have a bare bones understanding of the story from our upbringing but im sure some stuff mightve slipped past us. We really enjoyed what we’ve seen so far so Meaning of Life has a shot!
@ TH-cam - Promote this couple more!
Nice of you to watch this so soon. The Holy Grail has always been my favorite Monty Python movie and I find it much funnier than Life of Brian. Over 20 years ago when I watched this movie the first time, I was actually a bit disappointed that I wasn't nearly as fun as The Holy Grail and it took me many years before I watched it again. Now that I'm older and having watched Life of Brian several times over the years, I like it much more. Some like this movie more, some like The Holy Grail, and on IMDB they have almost the same score. Many commenters will undoubtedly mention this, but John Cleese actually taught Latin, among other subjects, for a few years, so the scene where he's correcting the Latin grammar is on point.
@@hazeman4755 interesting! I still dont know which one will win out over time, im just very happy to have seen them both so close to each other. Also awesome tidbit about John Cleese! I think we recognized him from other stuff so it was pretty cool to see him here and in Holy Grail as a much younger actor.
Can I just say that your intro & outro chill (including the music) is really relaxing and a great intro, really dig it! Is the ending song still stuck in your heads (esp after editing!) Hey Richard you seem to be saying more Wows than Jane in this one! At least at the start! :P Anyway just imagine watching this as a kid and the fun to be had (I didn't get to watch these until I was much older, but yeah to have discovered these jokes Biggus D etc at 12 or 13 haha classic!) That totallty zanny moment of the UFO lol and for 1979, so many Star Wars and Alien fans (new stuff back then too!) An yes, random and totally unexpected, a movie full of that, well said! I picked up the box set of these in a thrift store, the commentary tracks are insane lol Worth a listen to one day if you ever find these on phsical media Ninety-F.... Ninety-F.... Ninty-Six, Sir! Anyway brilliant, thanks guys!
@@watchreadplayretro tyvm! And yes we still have the music in our heads lol. The UFO moment is so random but it totally works and is pure awesome. We’ll check out the commentary some time! Thanks again!

I hope your holidays are lovely. Be sure to put a few sandals and gourds on the tree for Brian. 🎄
Not first. 😊
Damn! I wanted to not be first, but I guess I was too late.
The "pisser" Ted refers to is the situation, it's not an insult. (The "b" word can be both, btw) Also.. The last thing the religious pan-handler says before Ted punches him out is a great example of comedic timing, imo: "We'd like you to have this flower on behalf of the church of religious concious" WHAM!
Good catch on that last part!
Back then it was only PG & R. PG13 didn't exist yet
An often overlooked gem is "Yellowbeard," a pirate spoof starring eric idle, john clease and graham chapman from monty python's flying circus, cheech and chong, marty feldman, peter boyle and madelyn kahn. its one of my all time favorite movies. david bowie also makes an appearance as the shark.
that looks pretty neat, we'll check it out!
I'm late but -- if you study the map, not easy because it's in reverse, but California and Texas are the Western Forces. The Florida Alliance also includes Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. Florida is not "doing its own thing." There's also a fourth group in the Pacific Northwest. You might not 'buy" California and Texas as allies, but those two states have the largest National Guard forces in the USA. If they did team up and start trouble, you'd know it. All those states in the Florida Alliance also have large National Guard units. They could start some stuff, too. The white powder is lime. It covers the scent of decay. You didn't watch to the end. There's a photo of the soldiers posing with the dead President's body.
Thanks for the insight! I think we're going to be double checking the end credits on every movie we watch now lol.
And what many people don't know... Peter Benchley suffered from the results of this movie, until his death, not only because a real tiger shark was killed for the scenes on the jetty, but also because it still damages the reputation of sharks to this day, because this is a good film and stirs up the fear. But never forget the real monster in this story. Mayor Vaughn, who was in the hand of the New York Mafia who pushes him to leave everything open, because no business means no money for them, that means trouble for Vaughn...
Agreed the mayor is the true villain! Also we didn't know a real shark was killed for the movie, that sucks to hear.
