Mako Miniatures
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 27 ส.ค. 2021
A little corner where I can share my random miniature projects with people. In future it will probably have painting, sculpting, character design, army projects and anything else I get distracted by. It's also slowly filling with bad jokes of course.
Uploads will most likely happen randomly when I have enough done, rather than anything resembling a schedule!

MCP Dormammu - Rainbow flames for the Dark Dimension
Back to Marvel Crisis Protocol for a bit of fun - and to stretch the definition of 'miniature'! Multicoloured flames, a whole bunch of black, and a lot of hope that it would work out. Classic me really.

360 Degree Invisible Stealth Suit [1] - Setting the scene
มุมมอง 613ปีที่แล้ว
I wanted a quick easy experimental project, and of course it got out of hand... who'd have thought painting a Tau stealth suit would involve weeks of diorama building just to see if I could do something stupidly complicated! Nice kaleidoscope of colour. And butt cape is just a skirt, right?
Question? Why grey then black? Why not go straight to black?
Good question! It’s meant to look vaguely like light is either spilling onto the black a little, or glowing through from underneath. Kind of a quick and easy way to soften the edges (and reduce the amount of flat black, which is handy)
Yesssss rainbow scratchboard dormammu! Rainbow scratchboard can be surprisingly dramatic! Also i believe the butt cape is called a half skirt.
A half skirt! Thanks for that! Was bugging me for days 🤣 glad you like the result too!
Doing the robe looked painstakingly slow-going. And, since you decided to reference Family Fortunes, perhaps you should replace Archimedes with Les Dennis.
Love it when someone gets my terrible dated references! Wonder if Les Dennis could grow a beard like that… 🤣
My hand is up, because you have a wonderful attention to detail that enhances all your work so of course you built the whole mechanism! Even if sometimes you miss a bit here and there.
Thanks so much! I somehow always miss one random part in every project - maybe I should pretend it’s to practice fixing mistakes? 🤣
This is a really spectacular paint job, Ive gotta say. Ive spent a lot of time trying to find some reference for this guys for my own and am just blow away by this. The diorama really brings them all to the next level when you see them all together on there. Bravo! The effort was well worth it
Thanks! I did start to wonder what I was doing when I was painting a stick to look more like a stick 🤣 Glad you liked the results! They might be my favourite warband now I’ve got them done
Awesome finished result! and one of the best painting tutorials for Fire Hawks i've found.. cant believe what you do in you're next video!
Thanks so much! Fire Hawks is a fun paint scheme to do, it was painful to cover it up afterward 🤣
Very nice!!! The light looks much more like light now well did
Thanks! I’m almost embarrassed at where I stopped last time, but progress is far too much fun!
Its brighter and more saturated, so double win. Right?
I’ll take a double win for sure! Thanks Andy!
Definitely an upgrade! Honestly had never thought of a white glaze before, I need to try that sometime.
Thanks! I have a pot of Vallejo white glaze, so I figure I may as well use it. Easy enough to swap for thinned white or white ink I imagine!
Those turned out really good. The green peeking out from the bark reminds me of the layer of green you can see if you scrape the skin off a winter bare branch. Like they’re peeling the bark off. Loved how they turned out
That’s exactly what I was going for! Thanks so much!
nice!!!
Thanks! Took a while, but we got there! I never want to paint a tree again 🤣
Well this is impressive. The attention to detail and perseverance paid off though, because the finished display is fantastic.
Thanks Andy!
Its crasy how you come up with one amazing idea for builds after the other, loove watching your vids
Thanks so much, that’s great to hear! I basically write down every random idea I have, and use these videos as an excuse to try stuff. Still got a quite a few strange ideas to go 🤣
“Natural tree no good, let’s add gel” for some reason this is hilarious to me. Looking forward to the finished product
What can I say, the actual wood wasn’t woody enough! 🤣 Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
great job !
Thanks! We’re still playing through the expansions, so there might be more Hero Quest in the future. They’re a lot of fun to paint
Loved this! Looked like a fun experiment and I am excited to see what you do with the larger brushes in the future. Sometimes allowing the eye to add the little details instead of the brush is really nice
You’re right, it’s so easy to get obsessed over the tiniest details when a vague impression would do better! Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks!
Lovely! Where's those brushes from?
Also I want to steal that metal color for a project in the future, it's gorgeous. Did you use Scale 75 paints for it?
Thanks! The brushes are from Rosemary & Co, I’m a big fan of theirs. Flat synthetic ones, size 0, 1 and 2. Steal away - the metals are a little weird 🤣 The purple and fuchsia were scalecolor, then it was a scalecolor mid-red (I think aldebaran?) mixed with Vallejo model colour medium fleshtone, then just the fleshtone (adding white for the highest points). Any royal purple, fuchsia pink, tomato red and “flesh” colour will probably do much the same though, with the blue-cream priming underneath helping it along. That’s what gives it the temperature shift and keeps things getting too saturated, I think. Definitely give it a go, I’ll be interested in how it works out for you!
looks absolutely amazing!
Thanks, it was a lot of fun! I’m thinking of trying for much more obvious brushstrokes on something in future, big flat brushes are great
Love this! Such a cool scene and the industrial basing compliments the suit so nicely. Definitely works!
Thanks Natalie! Glad you enjoyed it!
Ive wondered about this before. Well done. I thought putting diorama in a box to limit viewing angle
Thanks! A box diorama is probably the sensible way to do it, limiting the angles. I’m not that sensible 🤣
Cool project! Glad to see another Tau enthusiast!
Thanks! Tau have some fun models to paint, one day I should really do more
Its a fun paint job
Thanks! It was fun to try
Congrats!
Thanks for watching! Still kind of baffled that anyone is watching my nonsense, but I'm very grateful 🤣
It looks cool as hell!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Wow ! That looks awesome good job man
Thanks! Still a little surprised by it myself 🤣
From the front and the angle with pipes as backdrop, I think it works really well. I appreciate the third angle, but that red really messes with ya. Nice work!
Two out of three is pretty good, thanks! Do you think the focal point of the statue was too vague to compensate for the red edges? I probably should’ve done a blue-grey wall or something, but “should’ve thought this through” is basically my tagline at this point 🤣
Unfortunately you can't paint a light-field - but very nicely done! I once had a similar idea, but dropped it, thinking it would be impossible to make it look good and went for the mini go from transparent on the bottom to visible/shaded on the top (not 40k and 3D printed with clear resin). It sold the effect I imagined ok-ish. I really should have another go with it.
Thanks! That idea sounds great - I say go for it, clear prints aren't something I've tried but it sounds like a lot of fun and a cool effect! Would love to see it if you do
This is awesome!
Thanks! I'm glad I'd already tried out painting through the camera, it would've been really hard without!
That is absolutely awesome, my dude! Quality everywhere you look. I'm sure you're very happy with the end result. Will definitely stick around for the next one
That’s great to hear, glad you enjoyed it! I’m definitely happy, it’s not perfect but it’s a lot better than I thought it might go 🤣
This turned out so cool! I’m curious what you think could be improved what with it being a real physical thing and physics being as limiting as they are? Watching it start to disappear even as you roughed in the colors was really fascinating
Thanks! It would probably be a slow refining process, probably with photos of how it looks without the model as references. Try to make the statue text match up more, that sort of thing. But then the viewing angles will get even smaller… it’s a tricky one! Even moving a light when I was filming threw off the colours in places 😆
To my mind, you've got the effect to as good as youre going to accounting for the limitations of it being a physical thing. That said, I'd be curious to see how you improve it if you decide to try smth
Glad to hear, maybe I'll come back to it sometime in the future and see if I can push it further. Although not for a little while, I need a break from paint-by-camera!
Awesome, that turned out pretty well! Especially from the gun arm side in my opinion
Thanks! Interesting you picked that side, it was probably the trickiest one, with the screen and dials and that long gun barrel!
such a cool idea and amazing work to make it a reality
Thanks! I've wanted to try this for years, glad it came together in the end. It's fun to pick up and turn around though, watch him fade and reappear
Impresionante ❤
Thanks!
Ngl you doing a great job blending that stealth suit into the scenery my dude, so seamless i can't even see it
🤣 almost seems a shame to put the suit back in, I could go for the classic invisible stealth suit gag!
This is honestly such a fun idea! Looking forward to the end product
Thanks! Hopefully getting started today, wish me luck!
Really like how it came out.
Thanks! Got to admit I'm a little nervous about the ending of this, I have no idea if it's even possible... but we'll find out!
love how you film a describe your painting methods! keep it up <3
That's really nice of you to say! I try to talk about my thinking as much as my painting - I figure there's a lot of advice on how to paint out there, but much less about my vaguely coherent plans 😂 Glad to hear you enjoy it!
such a cool idea, can't wait to see it done!
Thanks! Can't take credit for the original idea, but it's been fun trying to plan it from every angle... here's hoping the next few weeks go well!
Looks great! Can't wait for our blue boi to to appear next!
Thanks! You and me both! Although the big question is, after all this time… will it actually work, or is it going to be hilariously bad? 😆
Why did you cut off the Dwarf's axe only to glue it straight back on?
There were mould lines I couldn’t get to with the axe in place, and even though they weren’t that visible I couldn’t bring myself to ignore them 😆
@@makominiatures Ah, ok. Excellent paint schemes.
Thanks! They’re pretty quick too once I get going, helps that I can basically skip half the model!
Curious ... your thoughts of recasting that Tau Ghost Suit with completely transparent epoxy?
Ah, recasting - it would be great, but the few times I’ve tried to cast resin it’s a pain to make a decent mould, and really hard to get all the bubbles and haze and cleanup marks out of clear resin. I bet it would look really good, but I don’t think I have the skills. I’d probably go for a couple of parts of it being clear and paint a transition effect where they meet the normal plastic , might be easier.
I am painting my own Tau at this very moment and it was interesting to see some of these processes as I think about how to make my bases more interesting and how I could have some fun with future models by leaving behind more traditional paintjobs for something like this. Keep up the good work!
That’s great, glad I could help! I can’t guarantee this will work at all, but it might give some inspiration with a little luck!
I’m so excited to see you doing this one! I remember you talking about this as an idea… a while ago. Time isn’t real.
One of the best parts of doing this channel is finally getting to make and share some of the stuff on my long project list, it’s great! Maybe I should work out how to do polls of which project people think will be the funniest to try…
This will be interesting to see how it turns out! Good luck
Thanks! Fingers crossed, because I have no idea how it’s going to go. Quite possibly a glorious disaster 🤣
Amazing
Thanks!
I'm just beginning to paint minis and I bought a lot of loose 80s Heroquest minis to supplement my D&D game (mainly with the furniture). I'm having a lot of fun painting them as a beginners task.
Welcome to the hobby! The original models were my first painting too!
Your painting was flawless. My only issue is the barbarian’s “boots”. Why would someone wear a cuffed boot with Sandals at the bottom. Greaves i could understand. Just looks odd to me. Your blends are perfect btw. Subbed.
I’ve never thought about it, but now I can’t stop! He really is wearing prototype leg warmers, isn’t he! 🤣 And thanks!
These turned out really well, they would look quite dramatic on the game board.
Glad you liked them! It’s lovely to see them all painted on the board, usually crammed in a doorway being swarmed by skeletons. Does make me want to upgrade the board though… 😂
