White oak (Quercus alba) has a large geographic range throughout eastern North America. Its high-quality lumber is often used to make whiskey and wine barels.

Northern red oak (Quercus rubra) is an important species for high-quality lumber. It is also an attractive shade tree that tolerates planting in urban environments.

Because of its graceful shape, American elm (Ulmus americana) was once the premier urban shade tree of the United States. Beginning in the 1930s an introduced pathogen, Dutch elm disease, spread across the continent killing most of these trees. Only a few are left today, mostly in arboteta.

Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) is a southeastern species with distinctively-shaped leaves.

Yellow poplar or tuliptree (Liriodenrdon tulipifera) is one of the tallest trees of the eastern deciduous forest.
