great vid mate. looking forward to the manc vid
Look, you're doing great. I found that for these really long rides (12h+) it's not really about being fit and strong on the bike but more about proper calories management and having a saddle that won't ruin your ass and most importantly - EVERY 3-5h CLEAN YOUR BUM AND REAPPLY CHAMOIS CREAM!
This! I rode from Leeds to Whitehaven a while back and chamois saved my sanity..I was actually COMFY all day.
yeah,,, I did 350 miles in one go this year ,,, 3 hrs sleep,,, i did one thing differently which helped heaps, making a mix pot of wet and normal chamois cream,,, they dont mix well, but helped loads keep my arse fresh, applied every 2 to 4 hours depending on stops..
Well done on Great Dun Fell. I did it earlier in the year for my first time, part of a 200km+ ride. That was VERY hard! What Andrew's channel called?
I forgot to add a link! It's Andrew on 2 wheels. I'll put a link in the description now
@@CycletheNation Thanks!
I have a rule I stick to. Only ever reuse a quick link once. Officially they say quick links should never be reused but I find one time reuse is fine after that I would not trust it.
Have you ever heard of and considered trying out indieVelo? I much prefer it over Zwift, and so does almost everyone who enjoys racing 😊
Connex quick link, I’ve been using one for a year with waxed chained , no limit to how long it can be re used,
Thanks, will check them out
Good to get out with no plan and enjoy your bike and views.
Great episode 🚴🏼♂️💨
and sometimes different is better :-)
Yes Scott :-) you can do totally different hobbies as long as each both affords the time to respect and support each other's interests. it works (not married but long term partner)
I’ve never seen that traffic light red, near the Darby Arms under bridge, that’s what it looks like 😊
Same! That's why I got the camera out!
Well Done 🤙🤙
I've just back from The Lakes (Windermere) on my Cannondale Slate and I was so impressed with wide tyres (42c slick GravelKing). Yes, the road surfaces are changeable but the 2 biggest benefits I found were zero cuts or punctures and the fact you can thrash around on the roads (and did pick up a few PRs here and there!) as well as drop straight onto gravel roads at the lake side. I would love to see more 35-38c road tyre options and I think frames are starting to move in that direction. Tyre size should really be dictated by weight and ignore what the 'Pros' are doing; if you're a heavier rider, you need a wider tyre.
Great episode🚴🏼♂️💨 The scenery is amazing, looks like a lovely place to ride👍
Yes lets do it matey 🤩 see if we can get the squad together as well on that route
Loving the plans mate. Looking forward to winter training my self now. We need to meet up over winter and get some sessions done on your roads and maybe down on my roads. Plus the Zwift plans we spoke about yesterday :-)
Love it when following my plans... keeps the burnout low and consistency perfect. Plus a week or so's eating and a drinking keeps everything all moral up...keep.it lit fella
Thanks! Giving this a try.
Greta to know what happens after out day in May, and that our efforts are truly supporting others..
Ollie from GCN again?
Yeah, was up for the week and a guy who loves the Fred
Great episode, well done with video presentation! Looking forward to next years adventures 🚴🏼♂️💨
28c to 32c have been the size range that I have used on my road bikes for about 40 years. During the you must ride 23c tires epoch. It was actually difficult to find reasonable tires. Now the same people who told me 23c is all I need, are now riding tires bigger than I use. And telling me that I must use bigger tires. I own a lot of bikes, wheels, frames and parts. Including a wide selection of tires. My last visit to Portland Oregon I found that the roads were pretty bad. I brought a 1975 masi gran criterium. Lots of room for bigger tires. I had 28c tires on it. Still to narrow. I had to be careful. Not very fun. Next time I visit, I will bring a cyclocross bike I can thrash with at least 32 or bigger tires. Then I can just ride And not worry about damaging a nice old bike and or wheels. When bigger tires are better? is when bigger tires are better.
Hello from M.C.M. Lovely country side.
@@---l--- thanks for coming along! 😊
Couldn’t agree more on the comfort factor, it completely transforms the ride. I’m running much lower pressures than you though, I’ve recently switched from a 28mm to a 30mm and dropped from 60F/70R to 50F/60R at 81kgs and so happy with the ride, grip in corners I’m used to seems better too.
Go as WIDE as your frame will allow! I just upgraded to 35mm performance tires (Goodyear for Zipp), set up tubeless and running 44(f) and 47(r) PSI. I have set PRs on each ride I’ve done since the switch, with a significant increase in ride quality/comfort coming from 28mm (Pirelli PZero Race TLRs which I loved), set up tubeless at 57/61 psi.
What inner rim width are you running with those tires?
We Have Run Vittoria 32c Pro Cotton Tubeless Tyres £100 a tyre, First Ride Got Punchured and Segment Times were well down. You just can't run them at the pressures you need to match the rolling resistance of a innertube and the weight of the sealant and valve is more than an innertube. Went Straight Back To 28c Tyres With TPU Tubes, It's Safer & Quicker rolling resistance is much better running pressure of 7bar - 100psi BananaWax Drag & Friction Reduction TdF Racing Chain Wax so you don't get dirty oily hands and dirty Bar Tape if you get a puncture.
@@TESTA-CC as mentioned, it's not all about rolling resistance, too many people get hung up on stats which mean very little to an average rider. Comfort plays a huge part in it, especially on our shonky roads. I forgot to put the photo of the stats up, but my 18 mile TT course was done in the same time, with 20w less average effort. On chip-seal roads, it's vastly smoother
62 psi at what body weight? Thx.
I'm around 78kg at the moment.
I've been running 40c Schwalbe Marathon Supreme (discontinued but I've found a supplier with enough stick to keep me going for at least another 5 years - I get 5000 miles out of a pair) tubeless on 30mm inner width rims since around 2017. I can keep up on club rides with the bike stripped down, or load it up to over 40kg and tour till I drop. The stability, low rolling resistance and buttery smooth ride are like nothing else. I used to run 25c tyres, even touring and would end up with fatigued metal in the rims. Unless you're a pro, there is no reason to go any smaller than 32.
Any tires are good, unless they for your bike and ride style. I use 28cc and switched from Schwalbe One to Victoria Corsa 2.0 just this summer. Schwalbe lasts up to 2-3 years.
how much mileage? I can't measure tyre longevity in time, as I get a lot more done indoors over winter
@@CycletheNation at least 3K miles per year, but in every possible terrain and weather, off road as well ; )
@@MrSzwarz ah I see! 3k miles is about 4 months for me, and again, it's been in all weathers (the British summer 🤣)
I've had two sets of these, both in 30mm. One was a regular black wall and the other a tan wall, both setup tubeless. The black ones had no issues so I picked up the tan set right before doing my Empire State Ride in 2023. Both of the tan tires suffered flats that Orange Endurance sealant and Dynaplugs would not seal so I was forced to put in tubes. I then proceeded to get seven flats in seven days on that ride. I liked the way they ride, but won't be buying them again. I've had better luck with both Vitoria Corsa N.ext and Continental GP5000 STR 30mm tubeless tires since then.
I have read that the Agilist Duro TLR Tubeless are much more puncture resistant than the AGILEST TLR Tubeless
yeah, I've got some ore Conti 5000 S TR's coming for the next batch. Loved the 30's I had on, hoping these will be even better
Good advice thanks , I also just went to to 30mm from a 28mm on my tcr and don’t regret my decision.
I bought Corsa Control tan-wall tyres - just wish i kept cleaner from day one as now pretty manky. Reverted back to black when ordered replacements. Hope yours stayed clean longer :-)
That, is why I purchased black.
Saunas for recovery..treat yourself 👍
Do you consider the elevation to keep it short or go longer to keep it flat ?
Well done on the 1k matey 😉 how do even begin to plan a route so epic ? Would love to see the planning for one stage to get some inspiration
Great stuff Scott, next k will soon arrive :-)
So - if you could link 4 25mile sections from all your routes cycled - what would be the Cycle the Nation 100 Official Route?
@@PW-CreakySaddle as in 'favourite'? That's a tough one!
@@CycletheNation favourite is a word like 'fun' which in cycling has a slightly skewed meaning :-)
Well done on the 1000 subs! I hope you are doing well with the watch hours too.

Great day out Scott. And remember if you lay off the speed you get to take the magnificent views in better ;-)
Good lad and a great charity to support, my mother died last November from Muscular Dystrophy complications, aspiration pneumonia was the deciding factor. It’s a disease that isn’t as widely recognised as MS, keep it up 👍 Ps.
