Im just going through my c1 at the minute, agency work is looking like the best option for new starters to get experience as many companys want atleast 12months for insurance. What do people think??
Agency is good to try out different jobs and companies as well as get the experience. You never know one might offer you full time work as well.
One of the most unhealthy profession out there.Glad i quit for good.
@@SKODA8 it's only unhealthy if you make it. You can eat well, exercise etc just people choose not to. Bit I get what you mean for other aspects, it can be lonely for some etc
I have my class 1 but drive a bin wagon as i get £15.28 an hour to do so. It's easy work, start at 7am usually finished before 2pm and get paid 40 hours per week regardless. Class 1 wages in my area are not worth the added stress/ extra hours for usually less money per hour. I have a lot more time to spend with my daughter. Work to live don't live to work.
@nanoreefer1622 my neighbour does the same, he's also our binman. 🤣🤣
DCPC killed the fun in lorry driving
Best ever job I had was a tipper firm in Hanworth so layed back with shit wages but could do what you liked and a few sign ups and free tips second best job was driving a tipper lorry for a firm in Shepperton free shoots , sign ups , free shoot with asdug ballast and payed by the load into our pockets and the transport manager encouraged it
Worked for a skip firm years ago and they paid £5 bonus to pressure wash the truck on a Saturday morning. One Saturday morning it was six inches of snow on the ground, belting down heavy snow and freezing. Because nobody could wash the trucks they took away the bonus. Firm was run by a nutter who ended up in a funny farm in the end so what comes around!
Got my Class 1, and it's been a few months with no role. Wages are as low as the 12.50-13ph agency after paying your own tax in my area. (They advertise it as more, but you don't get sick, holiday, or tax paid) GH roles. Also, I can't quit my other driving role for the risk of going temporary with job security and needing 12-18 months' driving experience and the agency letting me down (and that has happened to me many years ago). I am really shocked at big companies who won't entertain people like myself who have applied for these roles and been rejected and hearing others saying they will only take people with experience or get past the two year probation due to insurance. Have UK road knowledge and drive large lutons in difficult places for cars, and it's totally disregarded. Also attempting Class 2 or 7.5t and even considering paying more for extra qualifications as a further commitment and temptation, I'm worthy of a driving assessment. Fingers crossed for 2025 as I'm still applying now and won't quit.
Mate, where on earth are you living? Please don't work for £12 an hour as thats what Mcdonalds are paying their staff now.
@sleepercell9926 South West. They do advertise higher wages, but don't tell people if you ain't PAYE you have to pay for your own taxes, etc, then some offer PAYE on a much less rate. There are decent roles with companies, and no one wants to know Even ones who take on new drivers have given me a knockback I'd say it's a me issue but I only got one interview and they even told me they made a mistake and to reapply. I would turn up to some companies with a C.V, but I do long-distance driving and have to plan ahead, not even enough hours in the day when you don't require a card hence why I want to do something more regulated.
70 hours a week? ???
@Nurlechaffeur easy... 3 x 15 hour days and 2 x 13 hour days that should come to 71 hours across the week.
@ So what happened to the maximum working week of 60 hours.
@Nurlechaffeur that is only driving and working time. breaks don't count towards that, so if you paid for all the hour you do on shift including breaks you can be paid for more. If you boss wanted to he could technically pay you for 24hrs a day, as long as your not actually working more than the average.

How does this tax free night out allowance work? Is it that your shift goes through midnight? For example 10pm - 8am or 4pm - 2am? And what do some people mean when they say that they do the agency work, max their hours and so on - so how does that work when you can only work and drive certain amount of hours a day, a week, every two weeks.... I only just started my first Hgv job, it's a foodservice multi drop but I am hoping to get the class one licence very soon.
@@PiotrstrashcanŚmietnikPiotra the tax free night allowance is if you're sleeping in your truck during the night or day if you a night shift worker. The amount that is tax free is £26.20 anything more than that you will pay tax on the difference. Maxing your hours means you do your 3, 15hr days as well as your 13 hour days. If only good if your paid per hour or get overtime after a certain amount of hours. If your being paid a day rate or salary you'll ideally want to get your day over and done with as quick as possible because there is no financial gain for taking longer.
@PiotrstrashcanŚmietnikPiotra to add to that, some drivers ferries, containers will use poa to gain hours. Some companies will pay you a night out but insist you do not park in services. You have to use a layby. If you choose to park in a services you pay for it, they don't. Yet another cheap trick. Good companies will pay night out money and also pay secure parking.
Dont work for a company that pay 2 tier. Driving wage, waiting wage. Dont work for a company that doesnt provide adequate facilities, dont work for a company that will take the piss out of you. Set your line in the sand and dont cross it. Move to a new company at the drop of a hat when you find a better opportunity, companies have no loyalty, nor should you. You will eventually find a good company that makes the above irrelevant.
@@williambeard5526 very true. I made a video about tips for new drivers and the most important one I think was saying no to things you couldn't or wouldn't do and not being afraid to do say it.
@AshleyHaleUK it is hard for new drivers. My friend is 2.5yrs in, tramped for all of it. He's now 3 weeks into a job at my old company on a fuel tanker. Earns more money, home every night, likes the work and I personally know it's a decent company. He could work with me earning a lot more but he is happy with the lot he has. So many bad companies that get away with the stuff they do because people won't stand up for themselves or together. I wouldn't work for any company that employs tactics like above, cameras in cab, pushed to do more at last minute, unreasonable unrealistic targets. Employees stand together and moan about the conditions but do nothing about it. All walk out together at the same time, and you'll see things chnage instantly. 2 many good, willing drivers torn apart by tin pot firms.
@@AshleyHaleUK we recently were in the red zone (high winds), I was supposed to come to work on that day and take a lorry out quite far away.... I have only been with this company a month, it's my first Hgv job but I refused to do that and told them I am not coming... there was a big drama about that but I won't change my mind... if they don't like it they can get rid of me... I am fed up with trying to be loyal to company I work for... I now care about myself, what I can learn from them and how much will they pay for my time and how will they treat me.... but I definitely won't think twice if they start taking the piss....
@PiotrstrashcanŚmietnikPiotra all drivers should remember 1 key piece of information. You the driver are responsible for that vehicle. Not the muppet in the office who says its only that far or my computer says you have time. The police and vosa will prosecute you the driver and the company will say why did you do that. Always protect yourself and YOUR licence.
Hi mate, starting to look into HGV driving. I’ve just left as a train conductor on 34k per year based on 35 hours per week. My hourly rate was £18.49. I want to find something that’s going to accommodate this sort of wage. I’m only 25 and have 3 children to provide for. Is it worth it?
th-cam.com/video/uH4rP-Kc3tA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MkB8gyD12cHYniSW Check out my latest video on wages. Hopefully it helps.
Good honest video, i am currently an hgv 1 driver and we get £12.10 per hour,no different night rate, £10 max per day meal allowance,£6 per day loyalty bonus. 😢
If you are lucky like me try get on for a Royal Mail depot, 50k a year class 1 easiest work ever 😂 drop swap send it 48/58hrs a week
@@Tom_Tabbing sound good. Is it always the same depot you go to or different ones each night, could get repetitive.
this is the job I would love to do but how do you get this kind of job? here they advertise through agency....
So I shouldn’t pay 3k+ to acquire a licence then no??
Aspects of every job can be shit. £3k for my license and I more than doubled my earning for the occasional inconvenience. The 'point' of this video is that I'm not tired and could easily drive home but the rules mean I can't and in my opinion going home would be better for my rest than sleeping in a layby.
@ I get that & I hear you! Thanks for the reply 🫡
Where in uk are you from? I’m SE London and have been eyeing up the HGV world for a while! Just it’s a lot of money if I should NOT pass 😳
Hampshire. It is alot of money if you don't pass, finding a good instructor is key. They shouldn't put you for the test if they think you'll fail. It just depends how quickly you pick it up. It would be more expensive to do c the c+e but that can help because there is 'less' to worry about.
@ when u say how quickly you pick it up, your referring to the driving and moving around of the Lorry yes? If so that’s not at all the bits that worry me it’s the theory that has me worried 😳
As a car transporter we get performance bonuses of 9k spread out through the year, but tramping is expected too. Basically salary approx.34k for Class 2. Class 1 probably get more and better bonuses.
@@Fiery-venom99 thats good to know, thanks for sharing!
Useful info, thanks. Im currently working on bulk tippers and a tramper, not oberly happy with the amount im getting paid for my time because I'm typically at work for about 110 hours a week (including down time over night). Big refinery near me in Immingham, just need an adr qualification. Heavy haulage also looks interesting.
@xite0069 I did tippers years ago. Paid on a day rate 🤣🤣🤣 £110. I could live with that wage at the time for a 10hr day. So I thought. Maxed hrs constantly. After not getting back to the yard on a 15, he came to pick me up in the works van so he could drive the wagon back (no i shouldn't be driving the works van). As soon as he got back to the yard, he got my notice. Onwards I went. Already had ADR from doing Bitumen. Got a job on fuel, loved every minute. Now earn over 50k for four 9hr days. 10 wks off a year, work life balance is brilliant. I'm not saying ADR is the way to go, just find a happy balance.
@williambeard5526 yea, that's how it is for me some days. Guarantee every week I do my 3 15s and 2 10s. Absolutely exhausted by the time I get home and no sooner does the weekend start then I'm off to work again Monday morning. Terrible work/life balance. Sounds like a good crack on the fuel though.
@@xite0069 people think fuel is the top tier. It used to be but Hoyer screwed the industry. For me it's not about the job. It's the work, workload. I used to do 60hrs a wk on Bitumen, nights out etc. Could earn 1600 a wk but had no home life. It depends on what you need to earn and what you will do to get it. My old company was 25 basic when I started, 4 days a week. Mon to Thurs, tue to Fri. OT when I wanted it. Hardly spoke to the office. Driving a 12t tanker all over the Yorkshire dales. Probably doing 32k max per year. Loving life. Rate went up to 14.50 for said 12t tanker, still in the Yorkshire dales. Not 12.50 sat on the M5 wondering which lay-by you gonna sleep in after you have dealt with all the expert car drivers. Moved house, needed more money. Left that company and started move bricks on wagon and drag. Great job but company started to just a little to much, left there, now work class 1 fuel in Manchester. Good job. Nice work. 4 days. Shifts. 10wks off a year. 9hr days and lates. Earn very good money. I see people in the same job for yrs and yrs. Never happy but won't move to fields new. Ps. I haven't done a 15 for about 9yrs. 🫢🫢🤣🤣
Thank you for the info, great video. Looking at maybe doing the Class 1 soon.
Glad it was helpful!
I was talking to a few new starters They was told to sleep in the lorrys with no facilities and the wages was 13 pound a hour
Top video, thanks. Just passed (done car to Class 1 this week) Will be looking at my job options over the next week or so.
Congratulations. Let us know how you get on job hunting!
Write a 2 page CV with a cover letter. Send it to the transport manager of every company with a radius of where you live. Apart from known bad ones of course. Some will keep it for the future, some won't. One of my best jobs had my CV for 8 months before they called me. Spent 5 excellent years at that company, my friend has just done his 3rd week at the same company. Good luck. 👍
The HGV Job Market really blows my mind. Im in the process of getting qualified as a Class 1 Driver, having recently checked jobs being advertised, I came across 2 that really put things in perspective. One being a Tipper Driver for up to £910 p/w (advertised as welcoming Newly Qualified Drivers) and the other being a Class 1 Tramper starting at £13.50 p/h which requires 2 years Commercial Driving Experience. I really cant wrap my head around it.
@@emanuel1940 experience will be down to insurance. Thats the trouble for some companies. Tipper work is good, I know a few people who do it. Spend most of your time driving.
Agency work may be helpful... I'm new driver too... couldn't find class 1 (not much in my area taking on new drivers) got started doing class 2 work... which enabled me to get experience.
@emanuel1940 apply, apply, apply. For anything at first no matter what it is. Just to get the start and jump ship as soon as you find anything better. A company may have a driver they want rid of, but will struggle to replace for various reasons. It's only a no at the end of the day.
I’ve been on road 4 years now and trust me HGV is shocking most places you go to talk to you like SHIT Then you have got todo a load of hrs to get good money so yes no LIFE I tramp out all week and take home £900 aweek and that’s in South Yorkshire The perks of my job is u see a lot of nice different places plus keeps me away from the wife 😊 Anyway all the best for your new career 👍
HGV driving isn’t good money when you factor in the actual hours worked. It’s a terrible occupation with harsh conditions. Your work becomes your life, taking a toll on both your physical and mental health. Every single workplace treats you with no respect, undermines your intelligence, and uses you as a scapegoat for anything that goes wrong, including late deliveries and accidents. 12 to 15hrs 5 days a week on average 60 to 65 hrs a week: It’s little more than £15 p/h
35 years class 1....Not any more. Brussels introduced driver CPC now they have abolished it and can drive in the UK.. British Gov use it as a tax on companies and drivers...to prove driver CPC is bullshit you can sit the same days coarse five times...
@@paulmurphy2234 can't sit the same course 5 times anymore, the only one you can do twice in the 5 years is driving hours.
😂😂😂😂
I was a driver for 36 years before a heart attack put paid to a job I'd really enjoyed. This happened just before CPCs became obligatory. Now when driving a car on overcrowded UK roads I'm only too pleased not to be driving for a living.
Royal mail class 1 drivers, we earn £36k for 35.45 hours per week. Mostly over 4 days. Night shift allowances is about £130. Plenty of overtime, home every night and all you do is go to a couple off mail centres or distribution network. Or sit spare. When I started in the post office in the mid 90s I used to watch the senior driver's go into their fans and sleep the whole nightshift. This was with the bosses blessings as they were all on docket ( overtime) for sitting at home. And as the older drivers retired I started getting good dutys as it's fun on seniority. Well it was. It's still a good job but nowhere near as good as it was. It works out about £22 per hour, plus any shift allowances due and a good pension rate. And everything is in yorkie cages and most of the time you get help to unload, easy peasy. And also your dinner break you will drop your trailer go for dinner , coke back pick up an empty and back to your office where your based. They could get rid of about 20% of the drivers but that's above my pay grade. Their won't be a Royal mail in 5 years anyway.
Get on the ADR tankers, and you'll shave off 20 hours a week and still earn more than you are now, mate. I'm on Gas tankers and done 64k last year with very little overtime.
@@markq1 that would mean I have to do more work than sleeping on a loading bay while the container is emptied???
@AshleyHaleUK That is true. When I was on general haulage, I got loads on sleep during the day on loading bays. On tankers, you are knackered after work, but you're home every night. Some days, you're only working 7/8 hours but still get paid your guaranteed salary. Full sick pay and more paid holidays. It's definitely worth considering it.
@markq1 I'm doing plant machines now, guaranteed 10hrs each day most of the time do 6-7 and home every day, much better in some respects but I do occasionally miss the tramping
I drove a friends steam roller to a local show and it was honestly the hardest thing ive done and i was just steering, the wheel turns 36 times each way so it was a case of predicting stuff 10m ahead of you lol
If you "don't really care" about the comment why did you make this video response lmao
@@emjr369 simple... Views 🤣
Many thanks Ashley, enjoy a ride in the cab. Take care.
Gonna be brutal when full automation comes in and there isn't any lorry drivers needed what would you do for work
@markwilliams5654 thats not going to happen in my lifetime im sure.
How much does one of these jobs pay since it’s a lot of work?
Not trying to my nosey but just wanted a rough estimate
Check out the rest of the channel, Ashley's done load of videos on the haulage industry
a lot of responsibility rules & regulations, driving hours so on,
Sorry for waffling on ! A lot of the drivers I worked with during the 1990s died in their late 50s and I worked out that maybe the reasons for their early deaths from lymphoma cancer ( we all knew someone on other firms that died early from it ) was from taking contaminated soils and muck from former gas works and dye factories disused breakers yards etc etc all containing arsenic and lead and poisons and we had to take it to special landfills hours away and you could taste the stuff in your mouth even with windows closed it seeped in the cab , luckily I only did a year or so but I was diagnosed with stage 4 COPD and I was not a heavy smoker so it makes me wonder 🤔
My life ended when I had to take early retirement due to work related injuries I broke my spine and had avascular necrosis and a bilateral hip replacement all caused by jumping out of JCBs and off the back of my skip lorry after sheeting up and all caused by jumping out of cab and should have climbed out ? Oh well I definitely had the best days and looked forward to going to work not many people can say that I loved every minute of it
I would love to post all the photos I have with the different dodgy firms😂 I drove for 👌
I don't like slagging some of you MUPPETS that have only been in the haulage game for a couple of years and telling me that I'm bullshitting you REALLY DON'T HAVE A CLUE HOW TO MAKE YOUR WAGON EARN YOU MONEY you wouldn't have had the bottle to chance being dodgy now . We had CBs and the boss just let us get on with it and he actually encouraged us ☘️🙈🕳️
How many of you green drivers have hit low bridges 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆🤡🤡
Are all you youngsters like the MUPPETS i have seen over the years CAB HAPPY earning basic wages 😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you Ashley it makes me mad when a few bellends call me a liar about how much money I earned in the 80s 90s and 2000s I'm sad to say that all our earners and free reign ended with trackers and digital tachos and then in cab cameras to do what we wanted back then and as long as we did our daily work sheet the old paddy ☘️ owner let us do what we wanted within reason ? These young wagon drivers should look up to old school drivers like we were for having a scam and actually earning money it all finished with digital tachos and in cab cameras ? I would do anything to live that life again ? And all the characters I met were all good people we backed each other up if one of us was in trouble
I edited my comment I missed bits out cos I'm wound up lying my arse ? I have probably never lied in my life ( apart from lying to the missus wanting to know where I am 😆🍻🍺
Im thinking about doing hgv class 1 license as enjoy driving etc. van driver atm. When i do it i 100% will look for 4 on 4 days job. As provides work life balance

Now if you look at maps you will see that that's madness, but you have to follow it, as that's the scheduled time for the customer's delivery. Also, they did not give you enough time to get from place to place even if you drove at the speed limit all the way and did not have any traffic! Secondly, there would be break schedules which would be longer than the time the next delivery was due! I was so glad to leave. I remember my manager's voice begging me not to leave! To be fair I feel sorry for my old manager too as it must of been stressful with all the drivers constantly leaving.
I am introvert and this job looks exactly for me.🙂 But how actually difficult to get these licence. up to 7 000£ deosn't grow on trees (all expenses for training and tests)
It should cost £7000 to get your licence unless you fail test multiple times. It's as easy as you find it, some people it's just clicks and they find it easy, others it takes longer.
I just went from car to Artic license, funded all myself (including CPC) little under £5k all in, that's for 45hrs on road + fees as of 2024, based in the North of England. Passed reversing test first time, failed on road test first time, switched schools and nailed it second time so you could do it cheaper. Going car to Artic was a learning curve but it's not rocket science, and you skip all the steps in-between and get all your rigid licenses as well in one go. Trying to find something half decent as a newbie is a pain but that's the same in any industry. I've turned down a couple of shit offers but if the coffers run dry I might have to suck it up for 6 months to get some experience on my CV. Is what it is, if there was a better way everyone would be doing it.
wıch up or book best to traınıng ?
Do you mean app?
@@AshleyHaleUK app or book wich is better sr ?
@@mehmetylmaz-ru3sl I used an app. Much more convenient. And it can track what questions you've not been given etc
@@AshleyHaleUK which app did you use?
@mehmetylmaz-ru3sl play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.focusmm.DTSComboLGV this one. I don't have a link for iPhone unfortunately
Great stuff 😊 you covered most of the common questions! Thanks 👏🏼 Actually applying to get C+E license
Without that protection , the ever more so greedy transport company's would have you doing another drop/ collection till you have an accident and then blame it on you . Having said that, I know where you are coming from . I remember when some full time contracts were based on a 40 hour week. Not that I ever had one.
@@lumpygravy38 not me, I say no to things like that, if I don't want to do it I'll just say no.
@AshleyHaleUK Agreed. You have to ! Consequences being you fall out of favour and there's always some kiss ass willing to do as they are told.
That bed looks minging
That's the trouble with doing this kind of work. When I was a tramper my bedding when up on the top bunk out the way all day. Now I'm a day driver I'm rarely on the bed. Still take it off and wash it every couple of days though.
I started well understanding it, but then ??? 😣
My Theory test is in 5 hours! I hope I pass today first try so that I get the standard international one...!
Did u passed
I AM ABROAD AT MOMENT GOT MY LAPTOP BUY UNSURE ABOUT A CAMERA THERE SEEMS TO BE A CAMERA AT THE TOP OF MY LAPTOP BUT NOT SURE THANKS. DOES DOING 2 COURSES IN A DAY COUNT AS 14 HOURS LIKE 2 DAYS
You would only be able to do 1, 7 hour course a day. If you do the new 3.5 hour course that would be 2 in the day but still obviously only 7 hours total.
This was incredibly helpful. I have my class 2 theory test tomorrow and the rest periods have been confusing the life out of me. The theory training I've been doing has been doing a useless job of explaining it, but thanks to this video I now fully understand it! Thank you!
