How Silo Uses Audience Expectations
**NOTE**
I made an error with the point about Juliette and the heat tape. Overall, the effect is the same, but I got the details a little switched.
Music by youtube.com/@FantasyLofi → ffm.bio/bitsandhits
Writing a story can feell like pulling off a good magic trick, where you need to control your audience's attention and expectations. It's getting harder and harder for TV shows to pull this off since viewers increasingly expect plot twists. How does Silo operate in this environment? Pretty incredibly.

    In my opinion, Timothy Dalton is the blueprint for what James bond should be. How hard is it to go shopping for an actor who literally fits the profile of what he is because when he read the source material by Fleming, he is James Bond it’s just sad back then that it was just wasted potential when he came in because he did a good job and hit it right out of the ballpark

    Your theory is good, but i always had another explanation for the mural. The Xenomorph is the ultimate life form, and they experience rapid evolution. After going through enough hosts and collecting enough beneficial traits they ALWAYS arrive at the logical conclusion of the xenomorph because it represents the convergent evolution to physical perfection.

    In terms of post-apocalyptic stories, the 1921 novel "We" by Yevgeni Zamyatin is my favourite. It's basically the grand-daddy of dystopian sci-fi, coming before both Orwell's 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World. It's very surprising that it hasn't yet been adapted as a major film or TV series (it has had adaptations, but all low-budget European efforts).

    I don't think Juliet stole "the good tape" that was the point. It was all meant to be the same tape. But she stole from the supply used for when people go to clean. There's even a line where she says that the tape was garbage anyway. There wasn't meant to be two types of tape. She had discovered a dark secret, and no one even noticed. Except I.T. Juliet didn't even understand why they were mad. Because the tape was useless anyway. Wasn't until the end when it starts to come together that she understands. Because until then, it just baffled her.

    Honestly, I have usually preferred release order, not just to keep the mysteries of the prequels for later but also to watch the technical advances in filmmaking, but I might suggest "shuffle order." 4, 1, 5, 2, 6, 3. 4 to start off with no context for Vader/Anakin. Then 1 to give us the first glimpse of the Skywalker family. Then 5 to get to the "I am your father" and see Luke wondering if it's true. Then 2 to give us more CLUES that it's true without spelling it out entirely. Then 6 to see how Luke learned the truth, and then 3 to get the final full picture. (Then explore whatever other films you like.)

    I feel like most of the details you have been wanting to add are already in the movie. At one point I thought you were being sarcastic by SHOWING the scenes that made all of these details evident. The only exception would be of course Obi Wan killing Jango, then I realized you were serious. I would first point out Jedi do not "close circles", they simply let go and follow the path that is traced by the will of the force. Obi Wan is not constantly thinking about defeating or killing Jango during the movie. And that there is already a line where Yoda asks for Obi Wan to capture the clone template and bring him to Coruscant for interrogation. Mace agrees cause OF COURSE it would serve no purpose to kill him. Mace even regrets killing Jango cause at that point that source of information is gone forever. He only killed Jango cause this guy wouldn't stop shooting and killing others. Tales Of The Jedi shows a Dooku that disagreed with the Senate AND WITH THE JEDI, which I think is one of the best examples of why the show is flawed. In the movies, the Jedi and the Senate are two opposite forces (and also in The Clone Wars show). Jedi are never asked to do anything by the Senate , anything they do is either a petition from the Chancellor o the Council, when both come to an agreement. Tales also shows that Dooku displayed violent behavior in front of other Jedi, undoing what Episode II had established; that the Jedi consider "killing is not in Dooku's character" and that "he is an idealist, not a murderer". Dooku's real motivations in the movies are not political idealism, or Qui Gon's death. Realize some clones are older than 10 years and Jango was recruited by LORD TYRANNUS. So he has been a Sith since before The Phantom Menace. That's way too INVOLVED with the Sith ideology and agenda by the time of the war. That is his real motive. The movie shows The Jedi knew from the beginning that the army and the separatist were connected. They simply could not interfere as this is not their army. As Lama Su says, it is for the Republic. Palpatine on the other hand expresses he does not want war, so the fact that he embraces war so quickly takes everybody by surprise, BECAUSE he played it cool for 10 years. This movie is not about the villains, is about Anakin. Although Dooku is the final boss, the real villain is the dark side. Aside from that, you have the best analysis for this movie that i've seen on youtube in a long time and I'm glad to know that it is mostly intelligent people who like it. And I do think that the movie is too complicated for the general audience and this is its most important flaw. But I also know there was no other choice. Ep I and II both walked so that Revenge Of The Sith could run. Attack Of The Clones has been my favorite movie the longest however.

    While I appreciate Episode I, I feel like skipping Episode II leaves us missing just as much. We would end up replying on explaining what happened, the old "show don't tell" mantra of film making. I would argue that the best viewing of Star Wars would be IV, V, I, II, III, and capping it off with VI.

  • @MichaelJPartyka
    @MichaelJPartyka 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I actually didn't start to enjoy TFA until I realized I had to view it as *not* a "Star Wars" movie. It's just a good sci-fi flick, the way Marvel's second attempt at FANTASTIC FOUR wasn't really a Fantastic Four movie but just a good sci-fi/horror movie. "Luke Skywalker has vanished" killed the movie for me right away because I knew right then and there that Mark Hamill would not be appearing until the closing scene(s). Of all the original characters, it's Luke whose growth over the years we'd want to see most, and they ripped that away from us with the first line of the scroll.

    • @ToughMartin
      @ToughMartin 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it could possibly have worked better had the movie been more about him. As it is now, the movie loses focus in order to shove a Death Star plotline in there. Had they gotten rid of that and had the story revolve around what Luke means to these characters and the galaxy at large, his absence wouldn't have felt as glaring.

  • @MichaelJPartyka
    @MichaelJPartyka 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The best suggested improvement was having the Emperor trick Vader into stealing Padme's life to survive. I wouldn't have had Vader realize that's what happened, though, so as not to weaken his bond with Palpatine. One thing that has always bothered me about ROTS was the parallel approach to Padme's funeral and Anakin's reconstruction. It made the funeral seem like a rush job since saving Anakin's life must have been one. I would've had a scene prior to the funeral with Anakin's limbless body floating in a bacta tank, just to make clear his sorry condition and establish some passage of time between his torching and the funeral. Even better, Palpatine could've informed him of Padme's death as he floated in the tank, so that he would thrash around impotently in rage and loss. His reconstruction as a full cyborg could then be paralleled with Padme's funeral as a similarly solemn occasion -- two entombmemts taking place simultaneously, with both Padme and Anakin being laid to rest. And, of course, Anakin's line, "You underestimate my power!" before getting the big chop has got to go. I prefer the "Tombstone" approach, where Anakin quietly tenses with resolve, and Obi-Wan shouts, "Don't do it!" right before Anakin leaps.

    • @ToughMartin
      @ToughMartin 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, the Tombstone approach would've been good. Sometimes it's way better to have less dialogue in a scene. I believe Padme's childbirth and death scene parallels Vader's creation, not her funeral? As it stands in the movie, she dies right as Vader gets his mask. The timeline on when her actual funeral takes place could be left up to interpretation. I always thought it was a couple days later, which would still be a quick service for such a statesman.

    My favorite black sheep is obviously "The Last Jedi", which I rate the best of the "Star Wars" movies for being a movie made for adults rather than children -- one in which Rian Johnson takes all of the viewers' expectations for a combined remake of ESB and ROTJ and cleverly subverts them one by one. I watched TLJ in the theater after watching all seven of the previous "Star Wars" movies, and by the time I was done with marathoning 1-7, all I wanted was an 8 that connected 7 and 9 somehow -- really, the bar was that low. So imagine my shock when I left the theater after seeing TLJ thinking, "I don't believe it. They actually made a *good* Star Wars movie."

    • @ToughMartin
      @ToughMartin 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @MichaelJPartyka
      @MichaelJPartyka 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ToughMartin I can barely watch the Death Star battle of ANH anymore because it's just so senseless. "Go away, human shield! There's nothing you can do for me now!" [Proton torpedoes get *sucked* down an *exhaust* pipe.] ESB starts off with high stakes, but as soon as everyone leaves Hoth, the movie shrinks down to focus on the main characters so tightly that the fact that there's a whole rebellion out there besides them is almost forgotten. (TLJ improved on this by putting the whole Resistance in the First Order's crosshairs.) ROTJ plays out like "Spider-Man 3" to me now. The Jabba arc has to happen because we need a resolution to Han's capture just as we need Harry to lose his memory attacking Peter so we can close down the revenge arc from SM2. (Heck, Luke acts so Sithy throughout the movie that he may as well be wearing the black costume from SM3.)

  • @MichaelJPartyka

    The one thing I know I would've changed is that I wouldn't have had Anakin obsessing over Padme at the beginning. That made him come off as creepy right from the start. Then, during his and Obi-Wan's discussion of how best to protect her, he should've showed some maturity that would impress her -- the transition from seeing him as a little boy to seeing him as a man would start then, and it would culminate in the bedroom rescue: When Anakin leaps on the bed and deals with Padme's assailants, she gets to see him in full growth as a Jedi, and even better, he gets to see her as an attractive woman rather than as the "angel" of his youth. This would lay the foundation of their relationship to come.

    I just watched these clips somewhere else. Including one not really involved in this video. There are a couple of times in this episode (including just before going into the oval office which you showed and at the beginning after talking to the VP), where a TV is on. At the beginning of the episode there is talk about a disease one of the (senators maybe, it doesn't matter) other people in the government. Then just before the Oval Office, there is talk about government oversight. These are. both good writing too. It's really background noise for the most part and seemingly unrelated to the story. It is however talking about the main theme; what do voters deserve to know about the candidates and how should they be able to hold them accountable. It's probably the first time we were aware of the president in the show not necessarily being clean politically.

    Gatekeeping art is the only reason Vincent van Gogh is going to be remembered for all of human history If video game, companies and people in general, keep trying to gate, keep video games as an art form the next hundred years it will be remembered as the ultimate art form the ultimate form of human expression Cuz that’s the only reason I can think of why people are against it being an art form is because it would put every other art form to shame you don’t need music anymore because you can make a music video game. You don’t need drying anymore because you can make a drawing video games in I am being. Overdramatic like you’re always need music and will always need art, but it slowly gets replaced by technology. People aren’t downloading drawing engines anymore. They’re downloading a game with a drawing engine in it. Kids aren’t all drawing on pieces of paper. A lot of them drawing games that are colouring games are drawing games. Video games are the ultimate form of art
