Does the stalker mode work with off brand air tags ? Basically tags that aren’t by Apple
Can it support up to 256 GB?
Another thing that seems to get glossed over is the work and dedication that is taken to put on the AZTR every year. Thank you, John Schilling. I know you don’t get paid for any of the headaches for the GD and the ITTs that happen throughout the year. The trails are updated, the wilderness bypasses change. There are fires, flooding and other impacts to the planned route that have to be scouted, verified and updated. Simply stating that the Arizona Trail is a public trail and no one person has the right to impose on another overlooks and obscures the depth of efforts to put on the AZTR. If you don’t like the rules don’t sign up for it. ITT included. Once you sign in and reg for trackleaders under the AZTR banner you must honor the rules.
As always a great conversation. Thanks for all that you do!
If someone stole my $13,000 and I know where it is, I’m getting it back with or without a warrant.
Just because a security device isn’t perfect doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it. AirTags complement other security measures.
Why is that such a deal breaker? So what if the law knows where I am. They know where I live anyway. 8:10
I bought a generic brand and it has no speaker
I removed the speaker in 2 minutes. Any 14 year can easily do it.
what is he talking about?????
Great chat. I'll repeat my sentiments that some miles of the EscapeLA route are as tough as any route out there!!! But I too really love the contrast of solitude for hours, and then a midnight stroll through urban sprawl. Add me to the list of those with Rockshox issues... Brand new Sid Ultimate w/ Race Day Damper took a crap somewhere between my AirBnB and Waterton Canyon on the way to the start of CTR. Knowing Jefe had some wrenching experience, I even asked him for any ideas to solve a free spinning damper lockout. Turns out the internal valve shaft sheared off, and Rockshox warrantied it and upgraded it to the new Raceday 2 damper, but that didn't help with riding the entire CTR with about 80mm of mushy-firm travel...
Size fit reccomendation: never look at the top tube length and reach length without looking at seat tube angle. ST Angle determines the reach. Steeper the angle, longer the reach. That said, modern MTB and Gravel bikes usually have steeper ST angles which leads to reach figures...
Thanks for that tip! Maybe i'm thinking off here but does a steeper seat tube angle move the seat closer to the handlebars, therefore shortening the reach?
@@TheEnduranceStudio yes it moves body postion forward which means that Reach (distance measured from BB to stem/handlebars) must increase accordingly...
Can you put music on it from a computer off itunes.
Yes you can but it’s not as streamlined as having an Apple integrated device. I had to google where iTunes was storing the downloaded podcasts and music and copy/paste the files onto the ruizu drive that showed up on my computer when I plugged it in. Kinda old school but works.
One wrap velcro 🥰👍🏻
All hail one wrap Velcro!
I had SRAM Transmission on a few bikes and on my gravel bike I have the XPLR, but I went back to Shimano XTR this month because I miss the mech feel. Also, I had a lot of issues with my batteries dying, also a few times on trail the entire system failed and said I needed to connect to the internet to update but I was in Moab with no signal.
Did you miss the mech feel at the shifter or cassette/derailleur?
honestly both…I’m not sure what it is but I do know electronic shifting feels dead. I like that it shifts the same every time, that was amazing. But I did over 4k miles and 130k feet of climbing on my gravel bike that had mech Sram Apex in 2023, this year I did about the same with Sram Force AXS and I feel that in 2023 I had a connection to the bike. I also love that as I got weaker on rides 4 hrs + or 3hrs + the tension was harder to shift. It was part of the experience for me. Now with AXS it’s just the same and at the end of longer rides I felt myself slamming the shifter because I’m so pumped up😂 but I mean I just missed the mech feel all around.
@@EdwardDennis-eq9sr thanks for your perspective thats super interesting. Also having the system fail and need to connect to the internet isn't very practical. This system is designed for 90% of the riders that probably ride 4 hours or less per ride and not too far from home.
WHAT ARE AIRTAGS OMG ALL YOU FUCKING SHITTASS TH-camRS GET THE FUCK OUT OF RECOMMENDED ;
Don’t tell me what I’ll regret.
thats awesome! 🤣
The story about mountain lion in selfie in Canyon was my wife. And interestingly, my wife and I passed the Rothwells while they were hiking up the North Rim with bikes on their bikes.
I wonder if the lion came back to join the party🕺🏻
When I got my bike 2nd hand I notice that even tho it had a heavy duty U-Lock there could be another deterrent for opportunist thieves on foot, the seat was easily removed and it not easy to ride a bike without a seat. 😂 Although, it is possible. Just a possibility for a certain situation I could be in.
I put an AirTag on my bike so that when I fly with it I have peace of mind that the airline hasn’t lost it.
That canyon grizl looks aggressive to be a bikepacking rig or is it just me?
Canyon touts it as a bikepacking bike but I agree a bit to agro. If I could do this trip again I would likely ride either a mountain bike with aero bars or drop bar 29er rigid with 2.5+ tires. Maybe a Salsa Cuttthroat or Chumba Yaupon. I've never ridden either but they look like they were made for this sort of touring.
@TheEnduranceStudio the Cutthroat would great. Just overpriced lol
Thanks! Excellent interview.
Dude!!!!!🤗
Talked with them at kentucky camp. So glad they made it.
so cool you go to meet them at an iconic spot like Kentucky!
Amazing. That's all I can say.
Thanks!
amazing thank you for the support!
Just buy the knog bike alarm with 85db alarm and apple find my support, price around 50,- can ve mounted underneath your bidon.
For problem 1: Cut the speaker wire For problem 2: get some muscular friends for some "search and seizure"
I’m not aware of the same stalker laws here in Norway. Afaik we’re totally allowed to track our property and retrieve it. But it’s best left to law enforcement to take care of that, for safety
if you're doing a quicky grocery stop... just get a super lightweight zip lock/combo. works great for grab and go.
yeah I've been doing this approach during bikepacking races and touring. I use the brightest colored Hiplok Z lok mostly as a deterrent. so far so good! hiplok.com/product/z-lok-combo-teal/?Google+Shopping&US+Google¤cy=USD&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAuou6BhDhARIsAIfgrn55VFrfOzM0HM6Qn4sszPWdpda3c5wFQwCwhBpousQRZ9P1MipsY20aAlplEALw_wcB
Another interesting great podcast
Thank you! This one with Ryan was really fun!
Why Airtags don't work as anti-theft device? Because mmurica. All the thief needs to do is to have an iPhone with them. It will alert them about an unknown airtag following them, so they will simply spend a few minutes looking for it, throw it away and. leave with your bike. As simple as that.
I beat the shit out of a Merlin XLM in the 90’s and never had any frame failures. A friend had a Lightspeed and no failures either. Both our bikes were American made. Guess ti quality has gone down.😢
I think quality control is debatable with boutique US hand made Ti frames vs. mass produced overseas Ti frames. Once could argue the overseas factories may have better more standardized QC processes in place.
Last year I noticed a couple of guys hanging around outside the front of our house looking at their iPhones. They were clearly looking for something and I asked them what they were up to. They said that they’d had some bikes stolen from their business and an AirTag was saying they were within 20 metres of the AirTag. The police turned up about two minutes later and they narrowed it down to my neighbour’s shed. Turned out he had five stolen bikes in there. I don’t know what they did differently to you, but it definitely worked, at least on this occasion in the UK.
thanks for sharing this story. Did the police have to ask the owner to search the shed on private property?
@ Not sure how it all went down. Just know that later in the day I saw the police taking the bikes from the shed and putting them on a police transporter.
@@TheEnduranceStudioIn England a police inspector can authorise a search of premises given reasonable grounds to suspect
thanks god we don‘t have the 4th amendment here. The same amendment that does not protect LEGAL immigrant for being searched by the ICE police even though they should be entitled to that very same protection. But the bottom line here is simple: ad against apple and pro tiles.
its easy to ask coders online to figure out how to put an airtag into antitheft mode like with these tiles. Tiles don't wok well, for there are 1 in am entire 1 million apple airtag and iphone users who would have the tiles app downloaded on their iphones or androids, and only that TILES app would connect to tiles-tags ones. so tiles is out of the game right from the bat. but apple airtags will connect to all and any iphone existing on the planet. again asking coders to overwrite the apple air-tag firmware with a little fix in it, is 100% legal. this way a thief would not make the tag beep, nor the apple air tag would show up as an "unknown tag nearby". another option is to check out air-tags sold in other countries where the laws might be the opposite.... the EU often has different laws than the USA, and APPLE has to follow them to be allowed to sell them in the EU...and so on with other countries. it will take some research...but i bet you anything there are countries that fit such criterias you wish for.... then just buy these apple airtags in that foreign country via amazon of that country, and have it shipped to your USA location...and if needed via Drop-shipping companies, if amazon spain, just as an example, will not ship to the USA.... use drop shipping companies
Real starte right at 3:51 , before that empty content talk to stretch the video ....
I get the point of stalker mode….but what if you are tracking a child that has been kidnapped? Dumb idea Apple!!!!
apple is stupid to let people know that i have an airtag on my bike. screw apple. I am not worried about a stalker. A stalker will just use another brand. Stupid to make everyone that wants to use a tracker suffer for a minority
Jeez get to the point
What about samsung's trackers?
Use a decent lock, the lockpicking lawyer has some good recommendations.
I also have a 2023 Epic Evo and been debating whether to get a new epic 8 or epic 8 evo, there pros and cons to that. However, because I love my bike I decided to start purchasing pretty much same stuff you have. Have you thought about the new epic 8 or epic 8 evo?
Hey there. Interesting to look at the upgrades Specialized made for the Epic 8. I'm not in a position to upgrade right now and my 2023 still has tons of life left in it! It's just getting warmed up for bikepacking adventures haha! What have you purchased for the 2023 epic - bikepacking bags?
Another option, if you’re alone: ask someone to watch your bike for 5 minutes. Chances are ultra low that they’ll run off with your bike.
Just get a D lock holster
By far the simplest anti-theft strategy is to simply bring your bike into the store with you. I do it all the time, and it's never a problem.
yep totally agree
extra tip 3:30 - use duck (or gorilla) tape to protect some areas of bags.
great addition. thank you!
How much is marketing in the comments or how much is IRL. Sure everyone is getting back their stuff .
now thats some 4D chess right there.
My e-bike was stolen from a bus stop where I had locked it using a cable lock as the primary security. I had removed the battery and seat and kept them in my bag. I reported the theft to Peel Police. A few days later, I saw an advertisement on Marketplace for bikes and contacted the seller. I showed him pictures of my bike, and he confirmed that someone had come to sell it, but he didn’t make the purchase. I offered him $100 as a reward to recover my bike, but it was returned without the horn and front light, which were broken. When I informed Peel Police of the situation, instead of investigating further or tracking the people frequently selling stolen bikes, they simply closed my case. Now, I lock my bike at the same location for more than 15 hours during the day and night. For security, I use a heavy-duty chain from Canadian Tire with a lock from Public Storage, along with a lighter chain lock from Temu and a cable lock securing the battery and seat.
Great quality of the video! Should have way more views!
thanks! maybe it will soon🤞🏻
