Why I do this EVERY time before taking my camera in the water
A quick tip on why I always take a test shot before taking my camera in the water. I've run into so many issues over the years that could've been quickly resolved by just take a quick test shot on land before dipping into the ocean.

Finding yourself in creativity can be so easy to do each day, yet it is also very difficult. Balance is everything. We all have our own reason to wake up in the morning. Don't forget to pee on it to protect it from jellyfish stings.
@@john-lenin exactly! Pee and then lick it to get the water drops off.
Excellent topic. I was trying to find a video like this last year , not many people talking about non wide angle in water shooting. still wound up going with an 85mm Sony fe on my apsc. It’s a super fun focal length. I don’t get as many great composed shots during a session as I would with my zoom, especially when it’s fast peaky as you suggested. But when it hits that focal length it is crisppp. Looking forward to watching more videos on this, great work
Thanks! Glad you were able to figure it out! I ended up trying to compare lens review videos with wildlife photographers and the odd portrait sports photographer. Never really compares to surf perfectly, but that’s where trial and error comes in.
Any exploration of a longer focal length with higher aperture? I would imagine it’s less sharp but also less heavy?
It just depends on what you’re going for. The Nikon 300mm PF F4, for example, is not too heavy at all, and actually fits in a moderately sized port. Shooting with it in the water is crazy, though. I unfortunately sold that lens last year, but bringing it out was a great experience. It brought backgrounds in closer and could get decent shots from a couple peaks down the beach. The problem is trying to find the room to work with it on crowded or peaky days. If you’re focused on reaching further and have enough light to work… why not? If you can, do it.
A beauty of sound and visuals! Thx!
Thanks Felix!
Good choice in music. Haven’t heard this in awhile.
Thanks! Was listening to it earlier this week and it inspired some emotion translating.

There is a community of surfers and lovers of the ocean that wake up everyday to see your work, your pictures, your videos. Your art brings us light when we struggle to get up, when some of us can’t because of physical or mental challenges. Your art fills our soul and allows many of us the window we once had and hope to have again to the ocean, waves, and the beautiful creatures both above and below. Thank you for being our window to the ocean when I and many many others could not get to the place that makes us whole! You and your work has been and will continue to be an inspiration to so many!!!

The shot at 15:40 is insane!! Sick stuff Blair, loving the videos
Thanks man!!
Interesting stuff we never even think about. I wonder if you can mitigate that corrosion, most notably at the handle mount, by swapping out the screws for 316 stainless steel. I’ve noticed that on supposedly marine grade equipment that while the body of the unit will be 316 SS, the screws are often just 304 or 18/8 SS which does rust in salt water. Anyways just a thought as we’re nerding out on stuff. Thanks for the fun video.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll have to look into that
Absolutely fantastic bit of narrative poetry! Well written/spoken, and also speaks to the heart of every surfer who “knows the feeling” you’re describing. It’s first and foremost an internal sense of defeat that is only magnified by the presence of others doing what we’ve determined is above or beyond us. The feeling sucks, but the feeling is also very true. Not embracing it can cost our very lives because we are not others; we are ourselves.
Love that and totally agree. Thanks for your words.
@@Blarrel.. Thanks man! Keep ‘em coming! I think you’ve found a unique niche in the Tubespheres! I mean, what surfer doesn’t appreciate hearing their sport (I’m always hesitant to use that one-dimensional word for our multidimensional ocean activity that is just as much art), described in poetry? The phenom and artistic photos/visuals combined with those lines of spoken word poetry (also combined with the fact that there’re coming from a real surfer) make this medium very cool. 👌🏼I think I’m speaking for lots of others who appreciate this when I say I’m looking forward to more! 🤙🏼
Brian is epic 🤙🏽
He’s the man!
Cool dude. That was fun.
Bailed and swam through a 25-30 foot face that morning. 4 guys out. Wish someone from the beach got a photo from the road for reference.
The rain probably kept most folks home until midday
Hey brother, what size port did you use to fit the lens?
Hey David, I used the Aquatech PD-75 Lens Dome Port for this lens.
Nice job! Instead of focusing on infinity, maybe try the hyperfocal setting by placing it at 4. For an additional focus buffer, try 5.6 and dial up the ISO to maintain shutter speed?
Thanks! I’ll try the hyperfocal out.
aerobic shape.
First time seeing pleasing and interesting wide angle photos on yt. Great captures! Neat trick on locking the focus too. Got me thinking of how you'd pull off focus control in an underwater housing and a focus motor setup would probably be way too cumbersome to pull off even if you could fit it in and actually control it. Then I remembered the adapter that techart produces for "old" dslr lenses to mirrorless systems; so if you were to have the M mount version of that lens you'd be able to use the techart adapter on your Z with M to Z stacked on top.
Thanks! Those adapters definitely open up more options. Some of the most ideal lenses for in-water use when it comes to small form factor and lightweight are those “older” manual focus lenses.
Where can we get Blarrel T-shirts? 😜🤙
Something I’ll have out sometime later this year hopefully!!
Looks great even underwater too.
Lightning blue water clarity helped! Thanks
People won’t/can’t appreciate how hard technically it is to have these video results. Great job!
Thank you!! I appreciate it.
Good thoughts bro
“The Ocean Won” a very interesting perspective but how about leaning into the possibility that you were able to listen to her well on this day…meaning you succeeded in connecting. Man can never tame her and will never “win” outside of his own narrow perspectives…but perhaps be allowed the honor to connect deeply with her to share a small piece of the energy she has to offer.
Love that perspective!
Respect for the ocean Is what it's called.
Beautiful man
Thank you!
Awesome footage brah, so much nature below the barrels
hey man, I’m 66 years old. I’ve been surfing since I was 10 they kinda look like Black Beach to me, but I guess it probably wasn’t anyway I know the feeling I’ve been out before and you get the feeling that it’s just you’re not supposed to be there, I barely made it back too. I remember that day like it was yesterday and I was like 20 years old. Thank you for this video. It brought back a lot of really good and some bad memories but more good than bad. Thanks again.❤
Oh yeah, I wanted to say you tell a great story man
Thank you! Glad to share it and I appreciate you sharing your experience
Blacks is so beautiful
Great story. What I do is "declare victory" and go in. Any day you survive intact is a victory.
Great clip, great narration, know that feeling.
The percentage of surfing waves to just fighting the ocean at a place like black is horrible, even if you watch video of there out of 50 people hardly one is "winning". I'll stick to my reef breaks with friendly channels with more waves ridden than duckdives in a session.
I remember the first time I surfed Blacks Beach on a huge swell over 12 years ago. Surfline was calling for 20-25ft but it was closer to 15-20ft with gnarly offshore wind. Caught 3 waves that morning, two of them being the best barrels of my life. Then the biggest set of the morning came, I’ve never dealt with a wave that big and tried to duck dive it. It was the wrong choice, I got annihilated along with everyone else, leash wrapped around my legs and hog tied me. I was held under for two set waves unable to kick before I could get another breath of air. I just remember how rattled I was, went in after that. Those 20-30 seconds felt like 5 minutes of hell to me.
65yrs old now and after 46yrs here on the NorthShore I have to say I stay in the 5' and under club.My deathorglorydays in xxxlg Surf between 78'-91' were GR8 until I bounced off the bottom at Rockpiles and cracked my skull and Folded my right shoulder blade.,The Ocean Will always Win in the End
