    Thanks for this video. Now I'm convinced not to do this myself. Every component on my 02 Caravan turns into a 3 day nightmare because the previous owners let rust and gunk takeover so I know Id have nothing but broken bolts every step of the way.

    Doing this soon on an 02 the timing cover got broken from negligence fro. A previous mechanic not finishing installing the alternator with the 3rd bolt on the rear of the alternator. So will inspect my chain and waterpump and pulleys once the cover is off. All in all what would you say is a reasonable amount of time to diy this?

      I think the entire project took about 14-15 hours in labor. That was spread out over several days with 2 of us, having little experience as mechanics.

    Good video, I actually broke four of the five 10 mm bolts at the water pump leaving the bottom left remaining! Instead of pulling the timing cover, I put the tensioning bolt back in but I pulled the head bolt that’s top right to the water pump all the way out, got a giant washer to hold the pump on better and screwed the head bolt all the way back in, been driving like that for almost four thousand miles- it works trust me

    From a retired mechanic to one having fun....you really should clean the surfaces BEFORE putting new parts up. Nobody would ever do the cleaning last. It's a pain, but that's part of being a good mechanic - elbow grease and patience. Also once you had the timing cover off it would have been a good idea to change the oil pump in it. Doesn't cost much for a replacement. If your engine is so old that you are putting a new timing chain, a pump change will surely help the engine. I was looking for the miller tool setup. Thanks for showing that. I decided it's not worth the cost (currently north of $400 on ebay just for removal) I can do it the way we did it in the bush: a standard gear puller ground to fit ......or welded scrap......as my Nigerian friends would do

  • @Krummin

    I'm guessing it's the water pump that didn't have to come off, not the power steering pump. Unbolt the pulley, if anything. Thanks for a detailed video guys!

    • @Pk3_Garage
      @Pk3_Garage ปีที่แล้ว

      It needs to come off. It's to awkward to try and pull the timing chain cover off. Remember the timing chain cover has to be pulled straight out. (To clear the crankshaft)

      Yes

    • @Pk3_Garage
      @Pk3_Garage ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, except there might be a metal bracket on the back of the Power Steering pump. There are two bolts to remove. One that is visible on the back of the pump. The other is located on the timing chain cover. These have to be removed, in order to remove the timing chain cover.

    I drain my radiator by using a small hand transfer pump. Just put the pickup tube down to the bottom of the radiator thru the cap. I was actually able to save the fluid that way. And NO MESS!!

  • @mr88talent
    @mr88talent 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just completed this job. I'm sure I would have messed up the cam position sensor had I not watched this. At 4:03 I noticed that when you removed the harmonic balancer bolt, that the harmonic balancer was not flush to the end of the crankshaft. After I installed mine, mine also is not flush, it looks just like yours, but I'm not sure if it should. I don't remember whether it was originally flush or not. Edit: I removed the bolt from another car and discovered that there is a gap - so the harmonic balancer is not flush with the end of the crankshaft, it sticks out past the end of the crankshaft. It appears to be something like 1/16 inch.

    Well, It's several years since you posted this. I have a 91 Dynasty with the 3.3 and it's time to do the timing chain. I have a puller but the crank sprocket will not budge, I'm just destroying my puller. I have looked for the socket puller you used in this vid but I can't find one anywhere, nobody even knows what I am talking about. Can't afford to put it in the shop.

    To the author, beachlover4123, please advise me. I only need to replace the front oil seal on my Chrysler Van 3.8L. Do I have to remove the timing chain cover? I will use a seal removal tool. The seal is leaking VERY slowly so it is not really a problem but I may want to tackle it. Your video is very good. Thanks to people like you who make these videos.

We just decided to document a procedure that isn't very well documented and share it for the world to help other hobbyist mechanics. After spending over 14 hours carefully documenting a technical process for free, nothing makes you feel more rewarded like hateful comments like this.

    Please tell me how you replaced the old hose, on the backside of the water pump. Mine is broken and completely missing from the back of the housing, is this a metal nipple piece that the rubber hose attaches to? @ashtonfarnell5616 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can please tell me how you repaired that hose at the 12:50 mark? Mine is completely broken off/missing, is it a metal sleeve in the back of that housing or just a smaller diameter hose that slides into the housing? I still have the shorter cut hose, it was still attached to the metal tubing, just now on the pump housing/timing cover.
