How Miles and Gwen's romance is flawed but still interesting anyway (a spider verse video essay)
Across the spider verse is a masterpiece but I've always felt like Miles and Gwen's romance felt somewhat underdeveloped to me. I didn't know how to describe how it was until now though, and somehow this flawed romance made the movie's 2 main heroes even more psychologically interesting to me.

    Dude, why are Miles and Gwen's relationship important to you? I respect your speculations and theories in your video, but... the truth is not fair... what I never deny is that Miles and Gwen's relationship is based and inspired by Setting in Tree where both show mutual feelings for each other. other. and Acros the SpiderVerse is an adaptation to that. Gwen never lied when she said it's always great to talk to Miles. You have to look between the lines and understand that there was more to their interactions than was shown on screen, both in ITSV, and during their swing date in ATSV. They talked the entire bus ride back to NYC, which was about 5 hours. During that time Gwen opened up for the very first time about Peter and the problem with her dad hunting Spider-Woman. We know this from context b/c Miles knows about it and asks Gwen about it near the start of the clocktower scene. The relationship they both had is inspired and based on Setting in the Tree comic, where they both show mutual feelings for each other. They bonded so well on that bus ride that the girl who doesn't "do friends" took a selfie of her and Miles having a great time together on that bus, a memory so special to her that she has it printed out like a Polaroid picture that she keeps as a treasure hidden with her spider suit. That bus trip meant everything to her, and the memory of it and Miles kept her going in her life back in 65, having the only best friend she has now after her 65 year old Peter Parker died. but ITSV and ATSV is not about the life of a normal teenager who falls in love with girls, it is about the life of a young African-American who becomes a superhero, replacing the real one in his universe and meeting other superheroes such as the one based and inspired by him. comic. Across takes this and really dramatizes it, ripping away their preconceptions. Miles learns that Gwen is not the perfect hero he thought she was, but a teen just like him despite being 1 year older than him and he being 1 year younger than her, scared and crushed under the weight of a responsibility that no kid should have to bear. And Gwen learns that Miles is like Peter, a person she cares about that needs to be protected and kept in the dark, but a fully capable and powerful hero in his own right. The events of Across leave their current relationship in tatters, that bond of trust between them broken. But we are only at the midpoint of this story. what we will see in Beyond will be about them both coming to terms with who the other really is. That's where the hard work to rebuild their relationship happens, it is possible that their relationship will still be explored. I fully expect it will be a big part of Beyond's personal stakes, how they navigate and heal this rift and reforge their bond. But they are not the only ones who had Bound, Miles already had it with the Spiderman of his universe, including the Spider Gang and Margo, but Gwen is the most advanced that is why she detected that Miles is in the wrong universe. And the possible consequences that they will entail, don't you understand? Spider Gwen does not have a canon event, as she is a variant of the original Gwen. She will make a leap of faith just like they did in the first movie. And through all this adversity, they'll come out with a stronger bond than before along with the rest of the Spider Gang and will most likely begin an actual relationship at the end of the movie, being a couple and friends. With all due respect, I do not agree with what you say in the video, you and the others should know better, superheroes do not fall in love with other superheroes, in fact they can do it all the time but not always... and it is not fair that they do that with Miles and Gwen, but I do not deny that their romance that they show is inspired by the comics. SpiderVerse is not about couples or that Miles and Gwen's relationship fits the themes of love in the narrative, it is about the character Miles Morales and his arc with the characters also inspired and based on the comics, not the same but inspired by the elements, That's what they're called adaptations for. Miles and Gwen fits the themes in the narrative very well, as well as the major themes of forging your own path in the face of destiny and breaking generational cycles of trauma, which these canon events represent. I look forward to seeing who ends up being right when Beyond finally comes out. sorry for writing too long, but I hope Miles and Gwen being a couple and friends at the end of Beyond the SpiderVerse, as my dad says everything is based on and inspired in comics.

    I literally could not agree more! It always felt SO superficial to me. Even if they had more time to talk and get to know each other off screen, they still only knew each other for like, 2 days. Which is not nearly enough time to really know a person, especially not enough to be with them. I think that when you meet someone you have basic relatability to, especially at that age, you begin to romanticize and glorify them, assuming that because you relate somewhat, they'll be able to understand you in every aspect. When Gwen leaves for 15 months, Miles can project all of his issues and problems onto the idea of her, assuming she'd be able to understand it all just because she's Spiderman. I think the 3rd movie would be so much more impactful if they don't end up together. In my opinion, it would end best if they realize how they've mischaracterized each other, and assumed that just because the other is also Spiderman means they get each other in every aspect of their lives. After this realization, they can either be friends for a while and truly get to know each other and see where it goes from there, or simply just part ways to begin with. Either way, I think it's a much better message than them getting together at the end of BTSV. I also completely agree that they should get love interests within their own universes. I think once (or if) they realize they arent for each other, they'll be able to go back to their own realities and really meet the people they've been ignoring for 15 months. Gwen can meet her band, and Miles can meet the other students at Visions. This is where they'd finally get to meet theoretical love interests that have been there the whole time: when Miles and Gwen were too caught up in someone they barely knew to notice them. Also, it's been pretty alarming to me to see how few people are taking this video seriously for all of its completely valid points. While there are obviously flaws to this argument (like every argument), it raises some really great points that most people look over when shipping Gwen and Miles. The comments on this video are almost entirely people who either misunderstood what you said or are refusing to listen. Overall, I'm so glad I found this video and I completely agree with everything you said. I was so sure I was the only one who thought this! I've been trying to explain to friends why I don't like Miles and Gwen together, but had a hard time articulating what felt so off about their relationship, and you said it perfectly. Thanks for subscribing and I'm glad to see a kindred spirit in the comments. I really hope they don't end up together too. I feel like beyond will end bittersweet in some way as Miles' father is on the chopping block and in the comics Miles' mother did die I believe, so both of them I fear for. I think some type of sadness will be at the heart of the conclusion of the movie and I'd rather it be some loss of a romantic connection instead which would truly make the friend zoning of the first movie a reality.

I haven't read the comics myself, so I don't know their exact personalities and relationship in the comics, but I imagine it's different from them in the movies, seeing as in the comics they are of marriage age. It's very different when it's two teens and two grown adults. Honestly, they probably will end up together at the end of beyond (for several reasons), I'm just saying why I think that's doing a disservice to the movies and their characters in these movies.

That bus trip meant everything to her, and the memory of it and Miles kept her going in her life back in 65. Yes, it is true that both of them idolized each other in a way that blinded them to the full truth of each other's full personality and lived experience. But that's what first love is often like. You look at each other with rose colored glasses....and then life happens and you learn that they aren't as perfect as you thought. Across takes this and really dramatizes it, ripping away their preconceptions. Miles learns that Gwen is not the perfect hero he thought she was, but a kid just like him, scared and crushed under the weight of a responsibility that no kid should have to bear. And Gwen learns that Miles is not Peter, a person she cares about that needs to be protected and kept in the dark, but a fully capable and powerful hero in his own right. I fully expect it will be a big part of Beyond's personal stakes, how they navigate and heal this rift and reforge their bond, learning to love the real person behind the idol they made of each other. And the possible consequences of that love when they have to deal with ASM-121, the death of Gwen Stacy. And through all this adversity, they'll come out with a stronger bond than before and will most likely begin an actual relationship at the end of the movie. So I'm going to have to disagree with your thesis. I think Miles and Gwen's relationship fits the themes of love in the narrative very well, as well as the major themes of forging your own path in the face of destiny and breaking generational cycles of trauma, which these canon events represent. Well, perhaps I coulda phrased her "lying" a bit better. I said she was lying as she really hasn't talked to him enough times for such a statement to even have much weight. Idk if Miles and Gwen talked for 5 hours straight but I won't deny that that convo was important and fruitful for the both of them. The clip I include where Gwen says "what i always think, you're amazing", is included for the same reason. In the first spider verse, she went from thinking he wasn't an amazing Spider-Man to thinking he was at the end when he proved himself so saying "always" makes such a statement ring hollow for me, as her opinion of him wasn't like that till the end of spider verse 1. It over simplifies the history of her opinion of him in a way that feels disingenuous to the audience imo. If the romance confronts the rose tinted glasses aspect of their relationship in beyond, the romance will feel much better definitely. First love glorification is certainly a factor to think about but I expect a bit more set up than what we got. Thank you for your comment. I love seeing essays commented under my videos. @@branalysis I think you might be taking "What I always think. You're amazing." A little too literally. Since he came into his power at the end of ITSV, she has indeed thought he was amazing. But she started thinking that about him before that point, b/c it's not just about his powers. From the moment Gwen meets Miles, he walks right through all the walls that Gwen thought she had built to keep people out and befriends her almost instantly. I think she found his empathy and understanding to be amazing. There is a subtle moment in ITSV where she is watching Miles as he effortlessly brings Peter B out of his depression about MJ when Peter sees a picture of her in the Spider cave. This impresses Gwen, so much so that she' just assumes that Miles will be the one to get them home, and has a rude awakening when she discovers he really isn't ready, which causes her protection mode to switch back on until Miles appears at the collider at the climax, having taken control of his powers and, after only an day off being Spider-Man, is already an effective hero who pulls their bacon out of the fire. She spent the next 16 months thinking he was amazing, and when she finally sees him again, her regard for him only continues to grow. In Mumbattan she is not just impressed with his competence as Spider-Man, but also at how he immediately took charge, formed a plan, and got everybody on board with it, even Hobie, who never takes orders. What I'm saying is that Gwen is saying what she has thought of him ever since they parted at the end of ITSV. And there was a lot more meaning behind her words in Mumbattan than, "I think you're really good at what you do." She was indirectly saying that she loves and admires him and has for a long time. I appreciate your video even though I don't agree with it. It's probably the most cogent argument I've seen against the ship. Keep making videos, dude. You're good at it.

      @@Seasonal-Shadow_4674 Miles and Gwen aren't codependent. Missing the person you connected with instantly and who understood the biggest secret you had in a way that no one else in your life can is not codependence. It's just missing a connection that was important to you and which can't be replicated due to their special circumstances of being super heroes. Teenage pining is also not codependent. It's kind of impossible to have excessive emotional or psychological reliance on a partner when you can't even see them and believe you never will again. It takes actually interacting with and over depending on the other person to form a codependent bond. When they are together, they do not display any signs of codependency. Gwen's navigating of her refusal to take Miles' hand and Miles respect for her boundaries while still expressing his own opinion and desires is actually extraordinarily mature for a couple of teenage dorks who have never been in love before. All of the trouble that occurs between them has very little to do with any sickness in their relationship, and more to do with Gwen's circumstances and beliefs in the reality of how the multiverse works, magnified by her trauma with the death of her Peter, and what happened when she tried to tell the truth to her father. She is not emotionally enmeshed with Miles. She is, in fact, the opposite. She suffers from avoidant attachment. She pushes people away, she doesn't over rely on them. Miles does not ask anything of Gwen either. They just care about each other a lot and want to be together, but one of them believes it is impossible while the other does not. Also, neither of them are enabling the self-destructive behavior of the other, which is the true danger of codependency. So I'm not sure where this idea that Miles and Gwen are codependent comes from.

    • @pheebaline
      @pheebaline 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@dgmilloway Do you not consider near-social isolation to be self-destructive behavior? While they don't explicitly encourage it with each other, the existence of them in each other's lives seriously enables both of them to completely separate from their own reality. For Miles especially, we see him, over the course of 15 months, make no friends at his school except for Ganke, his literal roommate. He can't even list a single person to his parents when they ask him who his friends are. But we do see his sketchbook, which is nearly entirely Gwen. And it's almost the same for Gwen, except she does have some other friends. However, she pushes most of the people who care about her away: we see it with her band. And instant connection does not equal a solid foundation for a relationship. In fact, when you're 15, it rarely does. They knew each other for 2 days max, and even if they did do a lot of talking in those two days, it's not nearly enough to really know a person. On the basis of those 2 days, they both spend 15 whole months apart. It's impossible for them not to have begun romanticizing each other in this period, because when you don't have the person there to learn about, you assume their personality traits. You can see the reality check Miles goes through when he sees Gwen again in the beginning of atsv. He realizes that he *did not* know her. And it's not even close to impossible to form dependencies on people you cant see again: we literally watch Miles do it. He literally goes into a scientific field just so he can see Gwen again. I would consider that a dependency, or at least a serious reliance. Especially when you're at an age like that, it's incredibly easy to fill in gaps about a person you don't really know. That's often the basis of high school relationships, and also the reason most don't work out. Gwen is avoidant, and Miles copes with that by filling the gaps of his knowledge of her with assumptions. When they get proven wrong, he doesn't know what to do except feel betrayed by a girl he knew for a total of 3 days. We watch it in real time.

They were socially isolated because they were super heroes with secrets they could tell no one and duties that took up all of their time and forced them to lie about it. Re: their relatively brief time together in ITSV. They didn't connect instantly over trivial things during those two days. Or develop a mutual crush over their shared love of Mario Kart like normal teens would. They connected and formed a strong bond over an experience they shared with literally no one else in their universe except each other. Two kids bonding over the huge power and responsibility they had thrust upon them. Over the trauma of watching helplessly as their Peter Parkers died. And then they shared a scary adventure together where they faced great danger and saved each other from dying on multiple occasions. That is the kind of shared experience that can really bring two compatible people closer together. I've talked about the romanticization issue in another comment on this video. But this is also not an unhealthy thing. It is very common to wear rose colored glasses in the early days of a crush or a budding romance. I think it's biological. Our minds feed us endorphins and encourage us to see the best in our objects of affection. Miles and Gwen just had the disadvantage of being separated for 16 months which led each idolizing the other for longer then usual. But they certainly made up for lost time in Across.The assumptions on both sides were forcibly stripped away by the end. Re: dependency. Miles was not emotionally dependent on Gwen. He just missed her terribly b/c she was the only one he knew who could understand the whole of who he was because she was like him. And vice-versa for Gwen. If anything, it was their memories and mementos of each other that helped keep them going when the weight of being Spider-Man got too heavy, that reminded them that they *weren't* the only one. Someone else was out there who was going through the same things they were going through and understood. Was finding Gwen and the rest of his Spider friends again a motivation for deciding on a career in hard physics and dimensional theory? Of course it was. A very understandable one. People need to be able to associate with other people like them, and there is *no one* in his universe that's like Miles. Sure, he's good with art. I knew a lot of artists in high school as talented as him. Of all of them, one went on to art school to study art. Choosing to do something else for a career is, frankly, the norm. And Miles isn't only an artist. The kid is super smart. It wasn't just a lottery that got him into Visions Academy. He's multi-takented. The one time we see an example of his school smarts is in ITSV. A test for the class watching a documentary on dimensional theory starring Doc Ock. He intentionally gets a zero, which the teacher turns into a 100% b/c she knows he understands the material and won't let him sabotage himself. So no, I wouldn't call that a sign of unhealthy dependence or over reliance. It actually seems like a solid career choice, and Lord knows the field is in desperate need of more ethical people like Miles to counter the nuts like Liv and Ohn. And lastly, I say they aren''t co-dependent b/c codependency has a specific meaning. It doesn't just mean "dependant." So, respectfully, I pretty much disagree with everything you just wrote. I personally find it troubling when people pathologize Miles & Gwen's relationship (and relationships in general, tbh) whenever one party makes a serious mistake with no ill intent. All relationships go through rough times where someone messed up and work needs to be done to fix things and make it stronger. It doesn't make the relationship toxic or unhealthy. It just makes it a work in progress.

    Here’s a situation that’s perfect for George. (George sees a good looking girl) George: Hello Girl: Hi (George goes to Jerry) George: “Hi?”what kind of thing is that “Hi!” That’s two less letters to my Hello!” Jerry: so what’s the problem? George: I put in the extra effort to having two extra letters, she should do the same! Jerry: well what else is a way to say hi? “Salutations?” George:….nah that’s too many then I have to think of something else.

    I always wonder how George pulled attractive women so easily myself. One think I can tell you is from what I've observed women back in the early 90s and further back seemed to be alot less picky then they are now. Alot of women I've noticed were happy getting married to pretty much any man with stability, decent job, house, etc. You can look at some famous serial killers as hood examples of this. Men that more than likely would be incels in our present day had no trouble finding women to date and marry. John Wayne Gacy, Gary Ridgway, Jerry Brudos. Not exactly Chad's if you get my drift. George seems really nerdy to us 2024 people but his style of dress was pretty much the norm back then, although his height, weight, male pattern baldness, and huge glasses were always considered unattractive even back then. In my head cannon, which I have no proof of BTW, since George is a fairly confident, outgoing person, I always justified him getting alot of girl as him being one of those guys unafraid of women rejecting him. Basically in my head he's one of those guys that just makes moves on any attractive female he sees in public without any fear. Fir every 20 women that reject him, there will be one he successful charms into a first date. Honestly it's the only way I can justify George's apparently playboy dating lifestyle lol

    What also made the show work is that Kramer was the opposite of George. He was confident instead of insecure. Yet they both worked perfectly on the show.

    The more I watched Seinfeld, the more appreciation I gained for Jason Alexander's skills in portraying George. His timing, every facial expression, every physical gesture... just perfect. I wish he'd return to TV... wouldn't have to be comedy... I'm sure he'd be great in a dramatic role as a grizzled old lawyer or something. (Hire this man!)

    This is only my 3rd video ever and it's almost 2 years old so I'm grateful to still be getting comments but a lot of them are along the lines of "it's hard to hear u, so I stopped watching". I'm aware that the audio isn't great. I was using a worse mic back then and I just generally had way more trouble speaking out my scripts at that time as I was more nervous back then. So pls, I'm down for criticism, especially of the constructive type, but atp I've seen enough about the audio to get the message and I've already been improving on the audio front since this video in 2022. Ur favorite TH-camr had bad audio once upon a time 💀

      Thank you for the video. The audio is actually good, though there's some times difficult to understand, which I understand completely. Not easy to write a script, reading and give life to it. I'm just curious: It seems that you have like a candy in your mouth and changing it's position from time to time, is it true? xD I understand if you don't respond. Keep up the great work ma dude 💪

    The show doesn’t include George’s daily successes. The drama jumps around to his inevitable self sabotage. George is like a gambler. Gamblers can’t remember winning consistently. But they recall, with great clarity, every really bad beat. That’s the show. All the hilarious bad beats.

    Great video, I just hope you learned how to audio balance right. Your voice needs to be higher, the audio of the scene/music shouldn’t overshadow you if you’re trying to talk in that moment, nor should your mic audio be much lower than a scene that just played
