Exploring Sandia Cave: A Thrilling Mountain Adventure In New Mexico!
Join me on an epic solo hike to Sandia Cave deep in the mountains of New Mexico! Explore the breathtaking landscapes, trek through patches of ice and snow, and climb a crazy spiral staircase. Once inside, we'll venture into the mysterious, dark depths of this infamous cave.
Sandia Cave, located in the Sandia Mountains of New Mexico, offers a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life. Discovered in the late 1930s, this archaeological site is significant for what was found here: an extensive collection of ancient artifacts, including stone tools and animal remains, which suggest it was inhabited by early humans over 10,000 years ago. Nestled amidst breathtaking natural scenery, the cave is a popular destination for history enthusiasts and hikers alike, providing both educational and adventurous opportunities.

Geeze that staircase is crazy!
It IS crazy! I have to admit i got a little dizzy watching it on the video 😄
I remember this cave before there was a spiral staircase to it. Hell of a thing to get in
@richardrawlings181 That would've been extra cool-- honestly, I would prefer the climb without the stairs! Thanks for watching!
This one is on our to do list next time we are in that area!
Definitely worth checking out! I did another hike from the same trailhead that day that had some beautiful views and would also be worth a look if you're already up there. Thanks for watching!
@@naturallytrailheaded you are welcome!
Very nice
Thank you!
Looks like the remnants of a catastrophic flood.
They were petrified with fused glass from gigantic lightning strikes called "cosmic thunderbolts. " This forest was petrified in a matter of days. It was a huge catastrophe. These lightning bolts caused transmutation. This is why huge gold, silver, and copper veins can be found nearby. We can recreate this effect in a lab. Petrification still happens today when there is a tremendous amount of electricity.
Live oak. They don't lose all their leaves in winter. My grandma has one in her front yard in Michigan, leaves are always on it, even in the snow.
...or do you get in the box if you see a bear...??
@RaymondMosier-cp6pn 😂 I would consider it-- waaay more sturdy than the tent!
So, do you put the bear in the box...??😂
Stop by DoBell Ranch. It's right next to the Petrified forest and you can pay to dig or buy already dug up rainbow Petrified Wood. I have lots that I dug myself. It was a great adventure. Rhonda DoBell at DoBell Ranch 🤙
Thanks for the info! I definitely want some of that Petrified wood. I've found chunks around AZ, but nothing as colorful as the stuff out there.
I remember those fires on Mt Lemmon-- I lived in Tucson in the early 2000's for about 6 years, and I can recall being able to see the mountain burning from the city at night. It was definitely heartbreaking! But it's hilarious that you bring up the pie, because that was always my treat after a long hike-- really was some of the best I've ever had! Thanks for the comments, and thanks for watching!
Very cool!
It was a pretty amazing place. Thanks for watching!
Amazing!🤩
Thanks!
It looks like you explore Arizona quite a bit. I have found what looks like ancient ruins on google earth in AZ. I live in Washington state and doubt I will ever make it down there to check them out. Let me know if you would like the coordinates and I can reply with them. Who knows maybe they would be good for your channel.
Absolutely! I'm always down to explore new spots. Thanks in advance for the info, and thanks for watching!
@ for some reason the message won’t go through. I’ll try again
@@naturallytrailheaded I tried replying with coordinates but TH-cam is deleting my comments. I’m going to send them spelled out
@@naturallytrailheaded Thirty-six degrees, fifty-nine minutes, fifteen seconds North, one hundred eleven degrees, one minute, forty-eight seconds West.
@@naturallytrailheaded some of these areas are in Arizona and Utah. Let me know what you think
The Superstition Wilderness (and the rest of Arizona) is transitioning to a grassland. This was what some of that area looked like before the fire:; th-cam.com/video/eDI3cfbeYgA/w-d-xo.html
The former Garden Valley was a hayfield (Brome) before the fire. Any cacti that remained after the Superstition fire of 2020 were submerged in the hay. In a few months the grass will be back. The cacti will never be back.
That's my fear, that all those amazing cacti and succulents will be out- competed by the grasses and fast growing weeds-- which seems inevitable. I think that area as it was is pretty much gone for good, which, in my opinion, sucks! Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it!
Thanks for this. I made it to Parker Pass and had to turn around. Couldn't take it.
It really was heartbreaking, especially knowing what it was like before the fires. I'll always love hiking in the Supes, it's just going to take some time to get used to the new landscape. Thanks for watching!
Have driven by this Petrified Forest for years and the bad lands surrounding it. Never took the time to stop. Last year, my husband and I really enjoyed driving and walking in this park. Took way too many pictures!!! This is a really fascinating place. We are NM Forest Service Volunteers and seeing all the trees petrified was something to see. We could truly appreciate the size of the trees. Hope you saw the one that makes a wonderful "bridge". Wow! What a tree! This drive thru video, really didn't do justice to the park, so hope you got a chance to hike and fully enjoy the scenery and trees and take tons of photos. Winter time (December to March) is the best time to visit. Hope to see more from you on this area. :>)
I only had a short time to visit, as I was on my way to Albuquerque and on a timeline, but i did manage to do the crystal forest loop, which, for being so short, was quite spectacular! That's very cool you're Forest Service Volunteers in NM. I've been exploring around ABQ and have really been enjoying it. I was at Tent Rocks today for the first time, and all I can say about that is "WOW!" Can't wait to explore more of this amazing area!
I thought I was the only one who picked up rocks and turned them over to see what they looked like on all sides!!! I have a little pile of rocks collected from all over as well. I even have one that looks just like a "cow patty". It is not one, but looks like it! Some have fossils in them. Some have copper, etc. in them. Really fun to see what is out on the trails. Good job! Thanks.
Thanks! I have an admittedly shameful amount of rocks i have collected, but it's so hard to resist when there's so many awesome ones everywhere i go!😁
We have been going to Arizona (from NM) for well over 20 years. Pre fires, post fires. Summer Haven used to be a small mountain resort town. There used to be a pie shop on the left hand side of the road going into town. Best pies you could ever eat. This little town burned in a fire a number of years ago. It was really sad. (reminded me of your reaction to the fires in the Superstitions). It does come back---in this case, your recent video of Summer Haven shows GROWTH and business that takes away the solitude of the once quaint little town. Ouch! Well done video, but sad to see how the town has grown. We will be in the area once again after Thanksgiving for a couple of quick hikes and visiting dear friends. Thanks for your videos. By the way---the OAK LEAVES you were looking at appeared to be Gambel Oak. Happy Hiking!
Wow, that was amazing.
Thank you! Those sunset colors were so intense it was kind of surreal. Thanks for watching!
Never been there. Thanks for the tour.
Thanks for watching! I'm working on another vid of the Crystal Forest Trail, which was an amazing hike and includes some close ups of the Petrified logs!
Wow, what a unique landscape. Thanks for sharing!
It really is unique! Thanks for watching!
Yes, human caused fires are horrible. But do you realize that the huge catastrophic fires in fact caused by humans fighting fire? Fire is earths natural cleaning. It removes dry dead grass, bushes, downed trees, and also provides new growth
Just did a similar loop in the area and it was heartbreaking. “It will come back” is a myth that needs to die because it’s not true for Sonoran deserts like it is for deciduous and pine forests. The invasive grasses are causing fires to burn hotter and larger. The native plants can’t survive fires of that intensity and they don’t grow back but the grasses and other invasive plants do. Fires were rare previously and the Sonoran desert was considered “fireproof”. The increase in human caused fires (which most are) combined with the invasive plants is changing the landscape to grassland and Sonoran deserts will be a thing of the past. www.swfireconsortium.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Fire-in-the-Desert-digital-singles.pdf
Thats actually rlly sad.
It really is! It's pretty heartbreaking to see in person, i can only hope it bounces back soon!
Weavers needle in the start is ICONIC!
Without a doubt one of the most iconic sites in the Supes!
Sherds. Metate right there also...
Good eye! There was so much going on at that site, such an amazing place!
but these mountains burn every year. This is not new nor will it be the last time they burn.
Not reasonable to complain about the cause of the fire. Fires occur periodically as part of the natural cycle. Wait a few years and you will be amazed as it springs back.
You can see the path the fire took. Charred remains! So sad. A great hiking trail though.
I did the 3 sisters trails about 2 weeks ago, pretty sad to see all the burnt area. I came down with lots of charcoal marks on my pants. 18:07
Love the 3 Sisters Trail! Bummed to hear its charred as well-- i expect most of those great areas to be burned, but i like to pretend otherwise until I get some confirmation.
It won’t take long to regenerate itself, but people who go out to enjoy the outdoors and become a weekend warriors setting up camp and burning campfires. Don’t put their fires out. They leave them smoldering causes a lot of our wild vampires don’t care, desert, force, clean, and don’t put out their campfires.
It really is maddening to me how careless people can be. It's especially frustrating because I've been hiking and camping for years and I know how easy it is to just take the little bit of extra time to do things right so that disasters like these can be avoided!
this is heartbreaking...we lived many years at the base of the superstitions and hiked into those areas frequently...devastation by nature is horrible but to be manmade is unconscionable...hope the person responsible is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law..😭😭😭
I agree on all your points. People who cause destruction like this, that negatively impacts not just the environment but so many of their fellow citizens, should be held liable in some form. Thanks for the comments!
I found the contrast between the burnt and unburnt areas interesting. Even though I know deserts are full of life, it's easier to truly see just how much there is/was after it's been taken away. It may have been a "downer" video, but it let us see something deeper about you and your authentic passion for the outdoors. I would love to see you make repeated trips to this trail loop to document the changes. I suspect it may be surprising and certainly interesting.
Thanks for the suggestion-- I'll definitely be back there and most likely documenting. The Supes has always been an area that I feel a deep connection to, so when I saw the devastation wrought by the fires it was hard to hide how much it saddened me. As always, I appreciate your comments and am looking forward to our next (overdue!) adventure.
Love that area as well and my heart breaks to see the damage, but the desert is a resilient beast and it'll bounce back before you know it
Doesn't it burn every year? It'll be fine.
Although i Love, Love, Love the Arizona Desert, i can still see beauty in the burned landscape, it Will Survive! ❤🙏
It will heal, but it was tough to see it so soon after the devastation. I hope it bounces back, and I hope I'm still spry enough to go see it when it does! Thanks for watching!
In the 47 years I’ve lived here, I’ve seen and fought more desert wild fires than you can imagine. It’s remarkable how quickly she bounces back, usually better than before.
Agree, yes "she" does, All thanks to Our Creator, God alone.❤🙏
The Wilderness is full of invasive grasses, this is why this fire spread so far and fast. Look at the areas east of here impacted by the Woodbury fire. The only thing that will grow in here is grass and catclaw.
Hi Mark This is Libby.
Hi Libby! Hope you enjoyed the video!
Thanks for taking the time to show these types of landscapes after a disaster. I think the climate change agenda has warped everyone's mind in regards to these events. This fire was caused by a man and 8 of 10 fires are started by man. The fire didnt start by spontaneous climate change. Also, invasive grasses have invaded these wilderness areas and when they dry out they leave a tinderbox ready to explode. So, they will recover in time, but that comes in many decades.
Such a sad sight! Hopefully people will see this and be a little more mindful when they're out there. 😢
One can only hope. If seeing all that devastation doesn't help, I don't know what will.
Unfortunately, a lot of people have an "attitude" me first and the Hell with You, especially on our Roadways.
5 miles and strenuous bushwacking, in the Superstitions, hmmm, I think not for me but more power to ya
Haha, yeah, it's definitely not for everyone-- but to me, that's a morning well spent! Thanks for watching!
The trail is safe,it's when you wander off the known path that the unexplained can happen, the spirit's of the dead protect the mountains
There's definitely a lot of mystery in those mountains, it's one of the reasons I keep going back! Thanks for watching!
What a beautiful work my friend! 🥾🥾
Thank you!
Nice!! It's a bit of a trek, but worth it. Not too strenuous and it doesn't feel like altitude. Would love to see how it changes in the winter. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching! I'm really looking forward to going back in winter to see the difference as well!
I backpack Horton Creek 2-3 times a summer with my kids. Did you get to the spring?
I did! That place was perfect to get out of the heat for a couple days. Can't wait to check it out again in winter to see the difference!
I love adventures of not knowing what is inside and exploring things like this!
@emptynest2travel Same! It's almost always worth the effort, but it always makes it feel like an adventure. Thanks for watching!
@@naturallytrailheaded we can't resist when it comes to unexplored tunnels, caves, etc. I guess its because we haven't run into any unwanted creatures in the process. LOL
@@emptynest2travel 🤣 so true!!
Man…you were looking right into it. Just go up to the left just before the fall. You even filmed the way you just didn’t go up it. You go up through the keyhole and wrap around. That mini wave rock is called the snake head. If you’re looking for a little different hike you can do a loop and go up Carney Springs to Robbers Roost the down Peralta making it a big loop. I love that area and have even camped up there.
@Colby168 Thanks for the heads-up, I'll have to get back up there and revisit the Roost. Also, I like that loop idea, I've hiked both areas but never made that link. I appreciate the info, and thanks for watching!
Opening shot looks super cool with those colors, damn!
